This morning (Jan. 20), Santa Clara University President Kevin O’Brien, S.J., celebrated a Roman Catholic Mass for President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, their extended families, and Congressional leadership before Biden’s inauguration as the 46th President of the United States.
The Mass was held at The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, with over 100 family members and invited attendees including Democratic and Republican leaders (see below). Violinist Patricia Treacy, soprano Renée Fleming and the St. Augustine Gospel Choir performed during the Mass.
Fr. O’Brien, a Jesuit priest who has led Santa Clara University since July 2019, has been friends with the Biden family for nearly 15 years, dating back to when O’Brien was serving at Georgetown University. Before becoming president of Santa Clara University, Fr. O’Brien was dean of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University.
Fr. O’Brien accepted the invitation to celebrate Mass from President-elect Biden, as he did before in Biden’s previous inaugurations. Fr. O’Brien’s homily at the inaugural Mass can be seen online.

To heck with all these Jesuits. They are heretics. Did you see the tweet by Fr. James Martin on January 19 with gay rainbow halos around the Blessed Virgin and Christ? And God does nothing. It’s only going to get worse. “Catholic” Biden has his fake “Catholic” allies in the Jesuits, in the pope and in American cardinals. They are going to cheer and justify everything he does that goes against Catholic faith. And God does nothing.
An activist in Poland was arrested for the crime of offending religious sentiment by profaning the image of the Black Madonna by modifying a reproduction of the image on posters, changing the halos to rainbows. Father James Martin SJ is supportive of the image and the activist.
The image isn’t crying, as he said.
To make a long story short, the original image of the Black Madonna of Poland was said to have been painted by St. Luke, but it has been vandalized and painted over so much that right now it is almost impossible to see exactly how the original painting looked. The tear- like mark or marks on the image are really slashes from the sword of one of the vandals. Catholics honor it for its history, and sometimes miraculous intervention.
Yes. And what happened to the dude who slashed her face?
You tell me. Look it up. Not going to do all your work for you.
Anne T. the point to the rhetorical question was for His own reason, God allowed the sword to strike her twice, but not the third time.
God permits evil to an extent, then he says “no more.”
He made boundaries for Satan when Satan wanted to test Job.
This was in response to Kevin T. and his complaint about God doing nothing.
The maxim is not to complain about what the Lord allows.
Kevin T., so if you saw his tweet, you saw his mistaken assumption that the Black Madonna of Czestochowa was crying. You know what really is on her cheek and you know the story, right?
You also know who painted the original, right?
A Catholic priest never presides over a mass; the mass is a celebration and the priest is the celebrant
Robert, although not the point of this “discussion,” since you brought it up, either celebrant or presider is acceptable. See #33 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy – Sacrosanctum Concilium as well as some other Church documents. I’m much more concerned with Rev. O’Brien’s apparent lack of concern for Christian teaching about life, sexuality and other things (at the university he presides over even more than during his recent indoor Mass in Washington DC).
Sadly, it seems Rev. O’Brien has not had a positive effect on Mr. Biden’s policy positions. In fact, Mr. Biden has become more of an abortion promoter, LGBTQ+ lobby advocate and promoter of (Chinese) Communism since personally knowing this Jesuit.
It’s ok to have over 100 people in a church if Biden is there, but not if we are there.
That’s a super spreader event, right?
Hypocrisy abounds.
TC different places have different rules. That’s all.
These evil, heretical Catholic clerics will all have to answer to Almighty God for their sins. And how Our Lady weeps for the sins of mankind! What a horrible blasphemy, the filthy “gay” rainbow halo evilly painted on posters of Our Lady of Czestochowa, by that sick “gay” activist in Poland! But God will have the final say– not the Devil.
Given the list of attendees this was not a mass at all but rather a gathering of self excommunicated X Catholics
“Devout” Catholic Biden had the White House issue a press release today that affirmed his administration will work to codify Roe v. Wade into law. There you have it. What’s this Jesuit pretender going to do or say now in Biden’s defense? Let’s hear it. Why so many priests and bishops and cardinals and the pope are intent on defending an supporting Biden is incomprehensible unless you begin to suspect that they aren’t really Catholic themselves. For if “devoutly” Catholic Biden can commit himself to signing the nation’s first-ever national law that establishes abortion as a federal right, then it seems “devout” prelates can support and do whatever they want too, and it doesn’t matter because who takes Catholicism seriously anymore? President Biden doesn’t. The Jesuits don’t. Cupich doesn’t. The pope? And God does nothing. Just like that, 40 years of national prolife work are going to go down the drain, with one stroke of Biden’s pen. And faithful Catholics will be scandalized and disheartened. And God does nothing.
Kevin T., the point is to save lives. Many efforts take more than 40 years.
Name calling and labeling, mockery and other verbal abuse helps the pro-choice cause.
Laws do not cause people to abort their babies but it does allow them to.
Stick to the preciousness and sanctity of life, the ideal of every child conceived being loved and wanted with a stable loving family to welcome him or her.
Stick to goodness and virtue.
Be the good guys.
Kevin, we don’t have the perspective of time. Read the psalms and you will find lots of complaining about God’s abandoning His people, and agonizing prayers for help in the greatest crises. The capture of Judah and deportation to Babylon did not end Israel. The Nazi death campus did not extinguish Judaism, although many Jews are agnostics or atheists now because they cannot conceive of a God that would permit such horror. But to say that in those death camps God was doing nothing is to presume to know more than we can. We will not know in this life the inner workings of Providence. We only know that God is not mocked, and that all of us will reap what we sow. You, me, Cupich, everyone. Pray our Lord keep us close to His heart and that we cooperate with all the graces given us.
A bit insulting that Fr. O’Brien can get on a plane to celebrate an indoor mass in DC when he *cant* do the same in Santa Clara… I’ll call him a diva priest.
Funny how Democrats allow crowds when it fits their desires. Hypocrites over and over again!
They allow riots and mayhem too when it fits their desires.
In a recent Pew Research poll, it was found that 56% of Catholics accept abortions for most any reason. The Church has gigantically failed to do her catechetical job of teaching Christ’s Truths. Especially the Jesuits. “Fr.” O’Brien’s life is given to Satan, not to Christ. His fake “Catholic” university is a total failure– and he failed gigantically to do his job for Christ, to teach Biden, Pelosi, and many others, Christ’s Truths. He should be ashamed of offering this Mass, along with the other clerics present.
