Sources inside the Vatican suggest that Pope Francis aims to end Pope Benedict XVI’s universal permission for priests to say the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), also known as the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. While the course of action would be in tune with Pope Francis’ repeatedly expressed disdain for the TLM especially among young people, there has been no open discussion of it to date.
Sources in Rome told LifeSite last week that liberal prelates inside the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith were overheard discussing a plan ascribed to the Pope to do away with Pope Benedict’s famous document that gave priests freedom to offer the ancient rite of the Mass.
Catholic traditionalists have just celebrated the tenth anniversary of the document, Summorum Pontificum. Pope Benedict XVI issued it in 2007, giving all Latin Rite priests permission to offer the TLM without seeking permission of their bishops, undoing a restriction placed on priests after the Second Vatican Council.
The motu proprio outraged liberal bishops as it stripped them of the power to forbid the TLM, as many did. Previously priests needed their bishop’s permission to offer the TLM.
Additionally, Summorum Pontificum stated that wherever a group of the faithful request the TLM, the parish priests should willingly agree to their request.
The overheard plans are nearly identical to comments from an important Italian liturgist in an interview published by France’s La Croix earlier this month. Andrea Grillo a lay professor at the Pontifical Athenaeum of St Anselmo in Rome, billed by La Croix as “close to the Pope,” is intimately familiar Summorum Pontificum. Grillo in fact published a book against Summorum Pontificum before the papal document was even released.
Grillo told La Croix that Francis is considering abolishing Summorum Pontificum. According to Grillo, once the Vatican erects the Society of Saint Pius X as a Personal Prelature, the Roman Rite will be preserved only within this structure. “But [Francis] will not do this as long as Benedict XVI is alive.”

News flash: the Church is in danger, not just Summorum pontificum.
Covfete – Got That Right. BTW – What Harm to the Faithful from actually learning a Little Latin – aside from dance steps that is?
A retired priest friend offers the TLM. I go to it occasionally but prefer the Novis Ordo. I don’t get all the hubub. A minority of the faithful prefer the TLM. If there is a priest willing and able to say it, what could possibly be the harm. I hope this information is wrong. It being based on evesdroping and given that Lifesite sometimes comes off as the National Inquirer of Catholic journalism, it probably is.
Very tragic, that the Pope discourages young people, who love the Tridentine Latin Mass– and a very bad move for the Church– so many young people have no interest in the Church, at all! The Church is in danger of being nearly destroyed completely, by immorality, clergy sex-abuse scandals, and Modernism! Also– it is always only a small percentage of very devout, faithful Catholics, who sustain the Church– and the Church should really support them, instead of supporting those with very little interest, who do not follow the Faith, rebel against it– but still show up at Sunday Mass. We don’t need HUGE numbers of people at Mass– we need a Church of true believers, small but very devout and faithful!
If the Pope decides that the old Latin Mass will only be offered by the SSPX– I wonder if large amounts of young people and their families, will go join the SSPX?? And someday, will there be large numbers of the faithful left, in the Pope’s post-Conciliar Church– ruined so badly, by all the immorality, rebellion, scandals, and Modernism?? Will Catholics feel their Church is trustworthy?? The SSPX does not suffer from these problems– they are carefully administrated, and very devout! I think the Pope should really “clean house” first– and have a devout, faithful, morally-excellent, well-administrated Catholic clergy, with well-catechized Catholic faithful– and a devout, holy, Novus Ordo Mass!! First things first!
Most people who post here equate Modernism with the abandonment of former and preferred styles, etc., such
as changes in liturgy, church architecture, removal of statues and the like. Actually, it is a serious heresy which has nothing to do with these things. It denies that objective truth can really be unchangeable, to put it in simplistic terms. “Modernism” is most often thrown around on CCD inappropriately.
Most people have no idea of the term “Modernism,” as associated with the Catholic Modernist heresy. The term “Modernism” is a term used by many professionals in many different fields, in many different contexts, to include many different areas of modern culture. Professionals in all fields are free to adapt terms as they think are best suited to their own purposes. The term, “Modernism” is also a term adapted by the Catholic Church for its own use. Any writer on a religious website like this one– is free to use good terminology in the ways they feel appropriate.
But is it wise to use the term Modernism in anything but its theological sense when commenting on a theological matter? What else but confusion does it foster? By the way, your 29 July post radically differs from your usual style. I wonder why.
Linda Maria, if your first sentence is true, that is a shame.
Still, why use the term “Modernism” except in its theological sense when commenting on theological questions? It seems only to foster confusion. By the way, your 29 July post differs radically from your usual writing style. I wonder why.
RE Linda Maria’s 29 July post
I think that your first sentence is accurate, and that it is the real reason posters misuse the term “Modernism”.
Still, why use the term except in its theological sense when commenting on theological questions? It would seem only to foster confusion. [By the way, the writing style of your post differs radically from your usual style. I wonder why.]
so what, anonymous, your terms? so what? Pope Francis and his top cardinals cannot stand strict Catholic theologians—- they are despised! who cares about heresies? the term itself is no longer used– instead– everything really is modernist– sorry! modernist church art, music, architecture, all-inclusive language, communion for adulterers, communion for gay marriage partners, gay families, gay priests and their boyfriends, feminist nuns promoting abortions.. you name it…
News flash! Fake News. Talk Radio news.
Don’t believe the news flashes unless they come from reliable, named sources.
Of course Bob One believes CNN and MSNBC are works of the Holy Spirit…
Bohemond, I admit to watching them both, but also Fox. MSNBC is to leftist for me. Fox is too rightish for me. CNN tries, but usually fails to be in the middle, but you can see their stripes. The only one I really pay attention to is PBS News Hour, because almost every story has both sides of an issue speaking. I don’t listen to talk radio. That being said, one of the maladies of our nation today is that we are too divided and listen only to those with whom we agree. A very conservative person really should listen to MSNBC, and a very liberal person should watch Fox News. That way both biases are available for analysis.
This is undoubtedly “fake news”. I suspect brietbart has something to do with this false story.
Or could it be CNN?
Lifesitenews has become such a rag. It’s quite a shame.
It has??? Please explain.
Click bait headlines and continuous reporting of rumors to suit a divisive agenda have turned it into the Catholic version of the national enquirerer.
It is not all that is ‘In Danger’ from the GILBERT Gaystapo:
Catholic men’s conference in crosshairs of left-wing activists
https://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/07/27/catholic-mens-conference-in-crosshairs-left-wing-activists.html
The theological conference causing controversy, titled “Strength and Honor,” is billed as “offering talks on the essential role of sacrificial masculinity of Catholic men to be good husbands and fathers” and to equip attendees with tools to “gain the spiritual and mental tools to be strong leaders among the faithful.”
But according to the Michigan People’s Defense Network (MPDN)…it must be shut down.
“Transubstantiation” – on the updated endangered species list.
More danger from “Bob One” and “Ralph.” Summorum Pontificum is likely not going to change, although the “free use” of the TLM is a terrible thorn in the flesh of the Zombie-Liberal Vatican establishment. Yes, BO and R, there is a true danger that more and more will be done to trivialize Catholic Tradition and its Mass of All time.
BTW, why the concern with using “fake news” and “unnamed sources?” Your pals the Democratic Party live on just these things to make their political points. Excellent points by “Linda Maria” and “Michael McDermott.” The FrancisChurch simply hates Catholic absolutes and its connection to Apostolic rectitude.
Don’t believe everything you hear or read. For one thing, I do not believe Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis hate each other. After all they collaborated on Pope Francis’s first encyclical, which was the completion of the one Pope Benedict started. Pope Francis did not have to even do that. I find a great deal of goodness in both — Benedict being a great theologian, especially on the liturgy, and Francis, just trying to take after St. Francis. They have two different personalities, God can and does use both. We all need to stop nitpicking so much.
St. Francis would be embarrassed by Pope Francis taking his name. Read a biography about Saint Francis, and you’ll discover that he bears little resemblance to the effeminate, falsified version of him that has become popularized and even less resemblance to the things Pope Francis has done and said.
Covfefe, I have been reading about St. Francis most of my life. I know he was a strong leader who ate meat while still caring for animals, etc.
People often take Pope Francis’s remarks out of context, just as they do Emeritus Pope Benedict XV1. I do think Pope Francis needs to clarify the notes in Amoris Laetitia, but nitpicking about his pectoral cross and the fact that he cannot always kneel down as some people do, just makes us all look foolish.
Some of the nitpicking I mentioned is on other blogs. What is said about both the past and present pope often is just ridiculous. One blogger gripped that Pope Francis’s pectoral cross was nothing like the Good Shepherd that was pictured in the catacombs. Who cares? It is a modern version that expresses the same thing. Not everything modern is modernism.
Let him try to take this right back from the believing faithful. Let him try.
But how Bob One the rest of the liberals on this site wants this to happen, if it does it will prove that this pope is an evil man… and I stand by that statement
“Fake News” — https://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2017/07/fake-news-fever-in-catholic-world-no.html
Thank you for the link.
If they can’t accurately state what is in a public document, why would they be able to accurately state what gossip was “overheard” at the Vatican?
The 7/27/17 post @ 5:52 is an impostor calling himself/herself “Ralph.” Obviously, the time honored real Ralph on this board would not denigrate Breitbart. Looks like I’ve really gotten under the craw of some intellectually crippled liberal here! Hey Anne Malley, Catherine, et al – God Bless! How y’all doing ?!! My Best, The Real Ralph!
So C&H anything you disagree with can’t possibly be true????
Hey Real Ralph! My name is Ralph too. Is it possible that there is more than one Ralph reading CCD? Bob One – like your posts – keep on posting.
Not really, you’re new here (at least under the name ‘Ralph’) and a fake to boot! (All liberals are fakes!)
Here’s some news for you Bob One, I don’t watch TV except for one series that I follow or a Yankees game. Most news corporations are arms of the globalist, who I detest.
