The following comes from a June 16 story on ABC-TV (channel 15) in Phoenix.

A man accused of killing one priest and injuring another reportedly left the scene of the attack with $600 and later bragged about the incident.

Gary Moran was arrested Sunday night in connection with the death of Rev. Kenneth Walker and beating of Rev. Joseph Terra. The men were attacked Wednesday night at the Mother of Mercy Mission in Phoenix.

According to court documents, a man came to officials Saturday claiming that he heard Moran had bragged to another woman about beating and robbing a priest.

That woman came to police Sunday, saying that she had met with Moran and was given a bag containing one of the priest’s cameras.

When police interviewed Moran later that day, he said that he did not recall what happened, but claimed that he was attacked by the priests. Moran went on to tell police that as he struggled with one of the men over a gun, another priest approached, and Moran shot him.

He then told officials that he did not remember anything else about the incident.

According to court documents, Terra told police he went to investigate a noise outside the church Wednesday night when he was struck several times with a metal object.

The priest then made his way to his room to get his gun, but was unable to fire the weapon because of his injuries.

Terra recalled a struggle over the gun and also told police that the suspect forced him to get on his hands and knees and give him money.

Court documents state Terra told police he did not remember calling 911 because he blacked out. The next thing he remembered was giving Walker his last rites.

Moran, a transient, was arrested Sunday and is now facing several charges, including first-degree murder, burglary, armed robbery and theft.

He is being held on $1 million bond.

Police say DNA found at the crime scene links Moran to the violent attack.

Moran was released from prison in late April for another crime and has a history of aggravated assault, according to police.
