Nancy Pelosi
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday defended efforts to permit federal funding of elective abortions, and cited her own Catholic faith while doing so.
A draft spending bill that was recently approved by the House Appropriations Committee would allow for federal funding of elective abortions in Medicaid. It excludes the Hyde Amendment, federal policy since 1976 which prohibits funding of most abortions in Medicaid.
In remarks at her weekly press conference in the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, Pelosi said she supports a repeal of Hyde because it is “an issue of health, of many women in America, especially those in lower-income situations and in different states.”
“And it is something that has been a priority for many of us for a long time,” Pelosi said.
She cited her faith, noting that as “a devout Catholic and mother of five in six years, I feel that God blessed my husband and me with our beautiful family, five children in six years almost to the day….”
The above comes from a July 22 story on the site of the Catholic News Agency.
Archbishop Cordileone
Let me repeat: no one can claim to be a devout Catholic and condone the killing of innocent human life, let alone have the government pay for it. The right to life is a fundamental – the most fundamental – human right, and Catholics do not oppose fundamental human rights.
To use the smokescreen of abortion as an issue of health and fairness to poor women is the epitome of hypocrisy: what about the health of the baby being killed? What about giving poor women real choice, so they are supported in choosing life? This would give them fairness and equality to women of means, who can afford to bring a child into the world.
It is people of faith who run pro-life crisis pregnancy clinics; they are the only ones who provide poor women life-giving alternatives to having their babies killed in their wombs. I cannot be prouder of my fellow Catholics who are so prominent in providing this vital service. To them I say: you are the ones worthy to call yourselves “devout Catholics”!
The above comes from a July 22 statement from the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
Nancy talks her faith
Salvatore say uh-uh
the Speaker in shame
And by not excommunicating her, who looks like the dummy?
Frank,
As disgusting as her comments were, I don’t think she can be excommunicated for that.
Steve ..I believe it’s her actions that she could be excommunicated for not her words and maybe that’s what Frank meant.
It’s not just her comments. It’s her actions — putting forth bills supporting abortion.
Nancy Pelosi can and should be told by her Archbishop not to receive Holy Communion– for consistently publicly promoting and supporting (as a lawmaker) a mortal sin like the killing of unborn children– Abortion. Very serious!
And in Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s persistence in her mortal sins, refusing to repent— the Archbishop should follow Canon 915, and excommunicate her.
Christifidelis,
I read Canon 915 and this appears to be for the denial of giving Holy Communion to those who have been excommunicated, interdicted, or who obstinately persist in grave sin. I agree that this applies to Pelosi.
However, based on my quick read, Canon 915 doesn’t specify those who may receive the penalty of excommunication. If my interpretation is incomplete [as it could be with Canon Law], please let me know.
Ronnie and Peggy,
I began to investigate this a little deeper and quickly realized that the issue gets a bit complex and would take me too long to come up with a competent reply. Therefore, I’ll withdraw my comment at 12:53 pm.
It is not excommunicable. Do you mean telling her not to receive communion. She has been told.
Remember what happened to Democratic Sen. Joseph Cervantes, of Las Cruces, NM, last week– as he has been a strong supporter of Abortion, throughout his career? His Bishop and pastor– and all the priests– were instructed to deny him Holy Communion at Mass– and so, last Sat. night, at Mass at the Carmelite monastery– he was denied the Holy Sacrament. All these years that Rep. Nancy Pelosi has been in office, publicly supporting Abortion and many other horrible sins– not one of our SF Archbishops has ever said one word to even hint at applying Canon 915 for her case, and many other “bad Catholic” local politicians, too.
And some liberal political Bishops want more dialogue on this with these politicians. These politicians are still going to support these policies on abortion
In pre-Vatican II days, this would never have occurred. Rep. Nancy Pelosi would have gotten nowhere with any interest to use taxpayer dollars to provide for abortions, if abortions had then been legal. The Catholic Church would have strongly opposed it, and there also would have been strong social pressure against it. The Church would have been real tough on her, giving her an ultimatum– either repent or be excommunicated. Reception of Holy Communion would have been unquestionably denied. A civilization cannot survive without morality and discipline. It takes a strong authority presence to sustain morality in a weak, ignorant, sinful, fallen world. The Church must preach and teach Christ’s Truth– and apply discipline as needed. The Shepherd’s crozier guides and disciplines the sheep. Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Pres. Joe Biden and their sinful, errant Democratic Party pals are not going to be “moved mysteriously,” to change their views. As a result of being given their “freedoms” to “choose sin”– millions more unborn children will soon face death. I have always believed that this aspect of Vatican II desperately needs to be revised by our Church. Our Church has a huge influence, worldwide. She cannot allow her members to “choose freedom to sin” without disciplinary penalties. It will ultimately allow Satan “freedom to destroy and kill”– not only human lives– but entire civilizations!– and spiritual death will result, too, for millions of souls.
Great observation.
I often wonder, had Vatican II not occurred (or if the original schemas had been followed and not jettisoned by the revolutionaries at the Council), could any of the evils plaguing society today — abortion, contraception, no-fault divorce, ubiquitous pornography, homosexual “marriage”, satanic music, indecent movies, open borders, the kingship of Mammon, etc. — ever been foisted upon society? Had Pope John XXIII obeyed the Blessed Mother’s requests at Fatima, could any of this happened?
I think not.
Regardless, it is long past time for the Archbishop to solemnly and publicly administer the strong medicine of excommunication.
Why do you “often” wonder about things that have an easy answer? Of course all those things would have happened. You are really implying that because of Vatican II all those things happened? Some Catholics are more superstitious than Catholic.
No, Anonymous. Before Vatican II, the true Catholic Faith of the Catechism was taught and followed, and Church discipline and Canon Law were a very serious thing. Laymen never had the disrespect, like Biden and Pelosi– to brazenly “do as they please,” lying to the Pope and entire Church and non-Catholic world, that they were “devout Catholics.” There was clear teaching about sin and virtue, and the necessity of mankind to receive the teachings of Christ, folliw Him, and seek Salvation. To commit a mortal sin was a very serious thing! You had better run to Confession! The Church was blessed with many priests and nuns, and many very gifted Saints, too, following Church teachings, achieving union with Christ. Priests and nuns were very much admired and looked up to. Nearly every Catholic boy learned to be an Altar Boy– and nearly all of them considered becoming a priest, at some point in their lives. The Church and her Mass was quite magnificent! Not “superstitious,” either, as you mistakenly say– very factual and truthful, as the Catechism explains. The Fathers of Vatican II were well-meaning, and they had lots of good points, too– not denying that.
Devout – totally committed to a cause or belief. Pelosi, Biden, and other “Catholics” call themselves “devout”. They are devout pro-abortists, but just by definition, how could anyone consider them devout Catholics. Oh that’s right, The liberal media just changes definitions to fit their ideologies. Just like they changed the definitions of things like marriage, gender, racism, and mental illness to fit their world view, but they totally ignore reality. God help us all.
Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, has introduced an excellent bill into Congress, called “Stop CRT Act of 2021.” I just signed an online petition to support it. All schools, K-12, and all colleges and universities, that allow CRT (Critical Race Theory) to be taught in their classrooms, will be automatically defunded of all Federal money. I hope this bill gets passed into law–maybe it will take a miracle, but it is very important. For our Nation to survive and thrive well, Congress also should find a way to pass a law requiring all schools, K-12, and all colleges and universities, to accurately and factually teach American history and civics, or else be defunded of all Federal dollars. We are all so greatly blessed to live in America. The rest of the world (especially Cuba, right now.) would give anything to live in a democracy, with abundant blessings and opportunities for all, just like America. They lack even the basic necessities of life– food, shelter, clothing, and medical care, etc. Poor Cubans. They need our prayers.
I’m sympathetic. But, what does that have to do with Pelosi and the Archbishop?
Curious, our society is threatened by CRT indoctrination of our children, as well as Nancy Pelosi’s many evil-doings, including promotion of the murder of unborn children– now, with taxpayers’ dollars, without the Hyde Amendment. Radical, Godless, sinful Democrats are a great danger to society.
Let’s be a bit more generous to our friends in the Democratic Party. Let’s no paint all of them with the beliefs of Pelosi and her friends. I know a lot of Democrats who disagree with most of her policies. There just aren’t enough of them to win elections. Perhaps we could refer to “those Democrats.”
Bob One– the Democratic Party Platform is evil. That is what people are referring to when they criticize Democrats of today’s era– the evil Democratic Party Platform. Almost 100% of Democrats are compelled to uphold their Party’s evil Platform– with very few minor exceptions.
Bob One– the Democratic Party Platform is evil. That is what people are referring to when they criticize Democrats of today’s era– the evil Democratic Party Platform. Right now– the Democratic Party is not “our friends.” It badly needs a total moral reform.
I agree100% that we should teach the real history of the US. But, what is the real history of the US? CRT, it seems to me goes as far in one direction as history texts in our schools went in the opposite direction. I taught high school and Jr. high school history for many years. The more we learn about it, the less it resembles the texts of the 50-60 or 70s. And yes, there is a lot of racism that we don’t like to acknowledge. Do we explain why state police were called to the bridge in Selma? Do we explain why a governor stood at the door of a college to keep black students out of the system? Do we explain what happens when capitalism is allowed to run amok – anti-trust, Tea Pot Dome, Wall Street greed that brought on the Great Recession? Do we explain why people intent on succession from the Union were allowed to raise monuments to the turn-coats? Do we explain the economics of slavery and man’s inhumanity to man? So yes, let’s teach the real history of the country, greater than any other, blessed with abundant resources and freedoms. But let’s make the story true for all to see.
Bob One– It takes a good history teacher, to teach our history objectively and well. And to also show the students, that although some Americans have been racist, not all Americans have been racists at all– especially in the North– and our country has striven to destroy racism and promote equality for all races. Since America’s founding, many political leaders and average citizens were totally against racism. Many risked their lives to try to end it. Many helped slaves escape. Pres. Abraham Lincoln gave his life for the cause of ending slavery. Injustices, though they exist in all countries and in all civilizations, are certainly not believed in nor upheld by good and decent people! America was certainly not founded as a “terrible racist country.” No way. Many of us White Americans clearly supported the fine work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Including JFK, his brother RFK, LBJ, and many members of Congress. Many Whites joined King, and participated in his marches and demonstrations, and gave money for his cause. And prayed for his success, too. A few Whites were even severely injured or killed, supporting King. Bob One, America is a good country, with flawed people, and struggling throughout our history to rectify evils. We all should proudly love, respect, and support America– and join the centuries-old human struggle to “right all the wrongs,” and seek God’s blessings. The Jews had the same ancient struggle against evil, in the Bible. They were God’s Chosen People. And Christ was born a Jew, to save them– and us Gentiles, also. America used to be a Christian country, and the Bible was read by most Americans. We need the help of God to “re-Christianize” our Nation, and to struggle onward, seeking to live rightly, to “right the wrongs,” and live by God’s Will for us. Our basic beliefs of Democracy and Christianity are of God, and have upheld His Light for many others in the world, struggling under the terrible evils of Godless atheism, Communism, and Satan.
Excellent comments. How could there possibly be a down vote?!

Can I post a link to get people to support my kid’s jog-a-thon?
During the Cold War, in the Eisenhower and Kennedy Administrations, I recall famous speeches by the Russian Communist leader, Nikita Krushchev (in power from 1953-1964) prophesying how Communists “would take America without firing a shot,” and not by propaganda, either, as Americans would never accept that– but Communists would take our nation, by operating
subversively, simply by breaking her down morally, destroying her in many ways, “from within.” Many of his prophecies look like they could actually come to pass. CRT is evil, and creates horrible divisiveness and hatred. It diabolically lies about its goals, and is extremely subversive. It evilly indoctrinates American children to “hate America”– thus, compelling diabolic destructions to our Nation. Hopefully, many good leaders who are working hard, can change this destructive path, and stop it.
.
I have neighbors who immigrated from Russia (both Russian Jews and Russian Orthodox Christians), as well as from Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and many Eastern European formerly-Communist countries. One of them grew up in formerly Communist East Germany, in Leipzig, J.S. Bach’s hometown, and is a permanent member of the Choir at Bach’s famous, 800-year-old St. Thomas Church, there. I also have neighbors whose families escaped the evil Communist regime of Castro, in Cuba. All of these people were so thrilled to immigrate to America. They can tell you many horror stories of growing up and living in a Communist-controlled country. America is greatly blessed by God. We must work hard to “right the wrongs” in our Nation, and make it great, following God’s Will for us.
Thank you Christifidelis I just signed on!
Thanks, Ronnie!
Contrary to what sick-minded CRT advocates believe– the American Revolution had absolutely nothing to do with “white privileged males,” or “racism.” The American Revolution simply occurred because the 13 American Colonies desired to form a separate nation, independent of Great Britain, and British rule. And the original American colonists came to America to escape religious persecution.
I personally wear a mask, and I tell everyone they should wear one. (I only say that on camera. In truth I don’t wear a mask when I don’t think a camera is on me.)
I accidentally downvoted this. I meant to upvote it. How can I change my vote? I click to change it and nothing happens.
Nancy P. , you are what many of us call a Karen. What business is it of yours to tell me what to do? You are not my mommy and I do not appreciate your nosy interference. You are not saving your life, or mine, or anyone else’s. Please do shut up.
Please don’t tell anyone, but my buddy Gavin is a hypocrite like me. He told everyone that they had to stay home, but he went off to his fancy restaurant. He got caught like me.
Ok you political Bishops like San Duegi Bishops and Cardinal Wilford. What about Poloshi sticking ino faces of the Bishops
Medicare for abortions, no Hyde Amendment. Better take stand back to the teachings of Christ and Church doctrine
Archbishop Cordileone has been at his post for over 19 years. What’s he waiting for?
Dennis, Archbishop Cordileone has been the SF Archbishop since 2012.
A lot of wisdom is contained in most of the comments at this site.I want to thank you for sharing both your comments and the occasional link.
You address some very important articles that we as Catholic, utilize as to what evil is going on out in our world. Problem is, it is not possible to take these articles and share them to social media, where they need to be placed. Please think about this.
