Diocese of Orange Bishop Kevin Vann was lauded recently for his efforts to advance tolerance and equality. He, along with OC Register Columnist David Whiting and Information Management Resources CEO Martha Daniel, received recognition from Christ Our Redeemer Church as they were awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. “Drum Major Award.”
Rev. Mark E. Whitlock, Jr., Senior Minister at Christ Our Redeemer awarded the “Drum Major Award” to Bishop Vann during an interfaith service at the Irvine church on Sunday, Jan. 14, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“Bishop Kevin Vann is creating the reflection of Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘Beloved Community,’” Pastor Whitlock said. “The Beloved Community is a place where racism, sexism and any form of discrimination is not tolerated.” He continued, “Bishop Vann has sought a closer relationship with Christ Our Redeemer AME Church in Irvine, CA. He has called for prayer following the Mother Emanuel AME Church (Charleston, SC) killing of nine people. He has invited me to preach at St. Columban Catholic Church. We continue to meet monthly for prayer.”
The national service award is intended to recognize those who selflessly work to serve others, but are not seeking the spotlight for doing so, according to the Corporation for National Community Service, a federal agency and the nation’s largest grantmaker for service and volunteering.

People who say that discrimination should not be tolerated show themselves to be unwise. Sometimes discrimination is good, sometimes it is bad. There is good discrimination and bad discrimination. Justice treats equals equally and unequals unequally. To discriminate among equals is bad discrimination. To discriminate among unequals is good discrimination. That is why it is not only not wrong, it is good to discriminate against same-sex relationships and unions: for they are not at all equal nor even analogous to marriage, so they should not be treated as equal to marriage; that is good and just and necessary discrimination.
Is it proper to discriminate against same sex unions regarding income and inheritance tax laws?
Tolerance? Who wants to be tolerated? Christians are called to go beyond mere tolerance to LOVE! Equality? Every human being is equal in his or her dignity as a human being (from conception to natural death). But we are not equal in everything. Some of us are wider, some taller, some of us are more educated, some of us are more compassionate, some of us are selfish, some of us are old, some are athletes. We are not all exactly alike, and thank God we are not! I certainly don’t want everyone to be exactly like me!
It’s too easy to be loved by the secular community than to stand up for what JESUS taught.
A Catholic bishop inviting a Protestant to preach at a Catholic church?
No scandal there.
I was assuming that it was not the homily at a Mass.
“I was assuming that it was not the homily at a Mass.”
I was assuming the invitation was to preach somewhere on church property, at Mass or not. Either way, the risk of scandal is definitely there, e.g., the scandal of the flock being led into religious indifferentism.
The article has nothing to do with samesex anything.
Christ came to bring the sword, not peace (Mat. 10:34). Mankind is not permitted to do, or believe in, or even to desire, certain things. Among such things is sex outside of man-woman marriage, including homosexual sex, and things related to sex, such as abortion and contraception (face it, these conflated issues are what the Church is all about these days). Avoid clerics who win such awards; their face of tolerance hides moral anarchy and religious fascism. Discrimination is needed to achieve moral goals.
This is about race not sex.
