Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia returned to St. Anthony High School (SAHS) to officially kick off the school’s student leadership program, a training course that Garcia helped create while working at the school before becoming mayor.

The President’s Ambassador Program was adapted from Cal State Long Beach’s successful youth training course, which gives students an opportunity to take part in personal development exercises, practice public speaking and lead public events.

This year, 25 new students successfully completed a rigorous application process in order to join the school’s returning 29 ambassadors.

Local paper celebrates Garcia’s engagement to boyfriend earlier this summer:

As fireworks lit up the Southern California skies on Tuesday, Mayor Robert Garcia and his longtime partner Matthew Mendez got engaged to be married aboard the Queen Mary.

Garcia — the city’s youngest, first Latino and first openly gay mayor — and Mendez have been dating since 2008.

The couple live in a downtown Long Beach loft with their cat, Tommy.
