The following comes from a late Jan. posting by Carl Olson on the Catholic World Report blog site.
This week marks the 41st anniversary of Roe v Wade, and so one of the contributors to the New York Times wrote a piece titled, Should Pope Francis Rethink Abortion? Would you be aghast and amazed if you learned that the author believes that, yes, the pope should change his mind—and the teaching of the Church—about abortion? No?
Would it surprise you at all to know that the author of the piece in question is a Catholic and a professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame? Hmmm.
The author, Dr. Gary Gutting, is indeed a professor at Notre Dame, and he explained in a piece last March in the Times that the two sources that define his life are the Enlightenment and the Catholic Church:
“These are the sources nurturing the values that define an individual’s life. For me, there are two such sources. One is the Enlightenment, where I’m particularly inspired by Voltaire, Hume and the founders of the American republic. The other is the Catholic Church, in which I was baptized as an infant, raised by Catholic parents, and educated for 8 years of elementary school by Ursuline nuns and for 12 more years by Jesuits. For me to deny either of these sources would be to deny something central to my moral being.”
Since Gutting won’t deny the Catholic Church as a source nurturing the values that define his life, he apparently deems it necessary to change her. And there’s the rub, as he ruefully admits in his new column calling for the Church to abandon her beliefs about conception, life, and the murder of the unborn:
“Pope Francis has raised expectations of a turn away from the dogmatic intransigence that has long cast a pall over the religious life of many Roman Catholics. His question ‘Who am I to judge?’ suggested a new attitude toward homosexuality, and he is apparently willing to consider allowing the use of contraceptives to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. But his position on what has come to be the hierarchy’s signature issue — abortion — seems unyielding. ‘Reason alone is sufficient to recognize the inviolable value of each single human life,’ he declared in his recent apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, adding: ‘Precisely because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value of the human person, the Church cannot be expected to change her position on this question.’”
So, what to do? Gutting’s approach is to appeal to reason:
“I want to explore the possibility, however, that the pope might be open to significant revision of the absolute ban on abortion by asking what happens if we take seriously his claim that ‘reason alone is sufficient’ to adjudicate this issue. What actually follows regarding abortion once we accept the ‘inviolable value of each single human life’? This appeal to rational reflection has been a central feature of the tradition of Catholic moral teaching. I put forward the following reflections in the spirit of this tradition.”
What follows is, in a word, tortured. Read it for yourself.
Since Gutting is a Catholic professor who was trained for many years by Jesuits, I thought it would be interesting to see what Father Joseph Fessio, S.J, might think of Gutting’s arguments. Not one to mince words, Father Fessio sent the following remarks about Gutting’s column:
“He is a very confused philosopher, which makes Notre Dame an especially appropriate place for him.”
“Major error # 1: his claim and premise that the fetus is only “potentially human”.
a. This raises the question he doesn’t (because he can’t) answer consistently: When does the potentially human being become an actual human being?
b. His arguments against aborting ‘potentially human’ would apply to human sperm and ova which are clearly (only) potentially human.
c. A valid conclusion cannot be drawn from a false premise.
Ergo: His conclusion has not been demonstrated.
“Major red herring # 1: comparing a woman who has been raped to the—risibly hypothetical—case of someone who has been kidnapped, whose kidneys have been connected to another person who will die if the connection isn’t maintained for 9 months.
a. We are not obliged to prevent all fatal diseases at the cost of our own life
b. Pregnancy is not a disease
c. The kidnapped person is not the only possible solution to the other person’s kidney problem; perhaps the author has never heard of dialysis.
d. The kidnapped person’s relation to the other person is entirely extrinsic and accidental (in the philosophical sense)
Ergo: non sequitur.
“Major red herring # 2: Catholics show they don’t regard the embryo to be as morally relevant as a small child because they don’t support major research into spontaneous abortion of embryos.
a. Who says Catholics would not support such research?
b. We are obliged absolutely not to kill an innocent human being; we are not obliged absolutely to prevent all deaths of innocent human beings.
Ergo: non sequitur.
“One final point: Gutting concludes his piece by stating, ‘There are morally difficult issues about abortion that should be decided by conscience, not legislation. The result would be a church acting according to the pope’s own stated standard: preaching not ‘certain doctrinal or moral points based on specific ideological options’ but rather the gospel of love.’ Setting aside Gutting’s crude misuse of Francis’ words in Evangelii Gaudium (see par. 39), we should note that conscience, as any good Catholic should know, is informed by truth, which is appropriate through both reason and divine revelation:
“‘Faced with a moral choice, conscience can make either a right judgment in accordance with reason and the divine law or, on the contrary, an erroneous judgment that departs from them. Man is sometimes confronted by situations that make moral judgments less assured and decision difficult. But he must always seriously seek what is right and good and discern the will of God expressed in divine law.’ (CCC, 1786-87)
“And: ‘From its conception, the child has the right to life. Direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, is a ‘criminal’ practice (GS 27 § 3), gravely contrary to the moral law.’ (CCC, 2322).”

Another NYT column of Dr Gutting’s:
Traditional Catholic themes like respect for life, the family as a primary aim of sexual activity and the dangers of reducing sex to pleasure remain vital to an adequate sexual morality. But the insistence that any abortion, any homosexual act, any use of contraceptives is simply immoral will not withstand rational reflection. (A full defense of this claim is beyond the scope of this piece. But one salient point is that, although the bishops claim that their views on these topics are knowable by natural reason without the aid of revelation, hardly anyone except conservative religious believers sees the force of the rational case.)
Unless the pope is prepared to reject the hierarchy’s absolute condemnation of these actions and revise the official teaching, his comments reflect merely changes of style and tone. These are welcome as far as they go, but they fall far short of the reform needed if the church is to fulfill its fundamental aim of bearing witness to the truth.
The clear and real FACTS – of what the Church believes and teaches
– including the REASONS for the teachings –
with corresponding footnotes from the Bible and Church Documents are all contained in the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” revised in accordance with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II.
“The CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, lastly is offered to every individual who asks us to give an account of the hope that is in us (cf. 1 Pet 3:15) and who wants to know what the Catholic Church believes”. – Pope John Paul II (CCC pg 6)
Heretical and schismatic Catholics do not read to ask others to read the CCC.
Because of their own sinfulness, they do not want anyone to know the TRUTH.
They would rather have as many as possible join them in sin, or accept their sinful behavior.
“Anonymous”: The “truth” of what? Your comments harken back to all liberal apologists that offer endless variations on exceptions to a stated moral position such that the moral position prohibits nothing, and protects nothing. No, abortion is wrong. Homosexual sex is wrong. Professor Gutting is wrong (and simplistic), and so are you. Popular will and desire are not the litmus tests for the strength of a moral position: contraception is wrong. Period. Just think of the many advances of the scope of the right to contraception since the 7th Lambeth Conference recognized its propriety in limited circumstances. See the following from John F. Kippley, ” “Casti Connubii”: 60 Years Later, More Relevant Than Ever,” Homiletic & Pastoral Review (June 1991): “It was to the Anglican resolution at Lambeth that Pope Pius XI made reference in his famous and immortal reply in “Casti Connubii” on the last day of 1930: “Since, therefore, openly departing from the uninterrupted Christian tradition some recently have judged it possible solemnly to declare another doctrine regarding this question, the Catholic Church, to whom God has entrusted the defense of the integrity and purity of morals, standing erect in the midst of the moral ruin which surrounds her, in order that she may preserve the chastity of the nuptial union from being defiled by this foul stain, raises her voice in token of her divine ambassadorship and through Our mouth proclaims anew: any use whatsoever of matrimony exercised in such a way that the act is deliberately frustrated in its natural power to generate life is an offense against the law of God and of nature, and those who indulge in such are branded with the guilt of a grave sin (par. 56).” The slope is impossibly slippery to indulge in the exercise of selective morality that you (and many, many others) suggest. Cardinal Bernadin anyone?
St. Christopher, it was an example of Dr. Gutting’s outrageous writings. As a Catholic, obviously, I don’t approve of his ideas or agree with him. The comment about “bearing witness to the truth” was incomprehensible to me. I was sharing the extent of his errors with other readers of CCD. I guess I should have indicated that.
Is it true that “hardly anyone except conservative religious believers sees the force of the rational case”? I don’t think so. It’s not really rocket science you know. Modern discoveries in obstetrics and gynecology tell us very definitely that the creature in the womb is one of us – a human being – from the moment the sperm and egg meet. That every innocent human being should have the right to live is also a no brainer. Anyone, religious or not, can understand that. But what are the implications of that? There’s the rub. The consumer sex ethic requires abortion on demand, and we are not prepared to abandon that ethic. That’s why we have to pretend we don’t see “the force of the rational case”. And that’s why we try to marginalize those “conservative religious believers” who challenge us.
You’ve hit on it, Anonymous. What you seem to be looking for is the same thing countless generations have desired, that is the ‘reform’ needed to facilitate that which is sinful and disordered. The big, ahhhhh, that feel good for the moment while negating even the natural law.
And yes, Pope Francis is just employing a different style and tone. One that is rampantly twisted to promote that which can never be.
Many Bishops throughout the USA are NOT doing their jobs.
They are required to uphold and adhere to Code of Canon Law – per Apostolic Constitition, “SACRAE DISCIPLINAE LEGES”.
“Can. 808 Even if it is in fact Catholic, no university is to bear the title or name of Catholic university without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.”
” Can. 810 §1. The authority competent according to the statutes has the duty to make provision so that teachers are appointed in Catholic universities who besides their scientific and pedagogical qualifications are outstanding in integrity of doctrine and probity of life and that they are removed from their function when they lack these requirements;
the manner of proceeding defined in the statutes is to be observed. ”
” Can. 812 Those who teach theological disciplines in any institutes of higher studies whatsoever must have a mandate from the competent ecclesiastical authority.”
Let’s exhort ALL Diocese Bishops in the USA to do their jobs.
Matt,
” Can. 812 Those who teach theological disciplines in any institutes of higher studies whatsoever must have a mandate from the competent ecclesiastical authority.” So there lies the rub, are they indeed competent ecclesiastical authorities or just politically appointed “bishops”?
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika!
Viva Cristo Rey!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Well, that was an amusing turn of a phrase. But you know that isn’t how the word competent is being used here.
Well Matt, since you know so much about being a bishop, maybe you ought to try being one someday! Are you now a priest, or have you applied to a seminary in the RCC? Or will you go the “other” route and get ordained bishop without the permission of Rome? Why not just apply for ordination by mail? That way you could demonstrate what a REAL bishop should do!
Well, YFC, could be if Matt applied for ordination by mail he might actually learn what the Church has always taught instead of the half-baked psyche take the place of doctrine classes and social justice new-agey sanctity that passes for a solid Catholic formation today.
Not in all seminaries to be sure. But not all seminaries produce the same fruits as the Bishops are far from being in union with one another.
Father Joseph Fessio, S.J. is correct, thank you!!
Dr. Gutting should have been excommunicated many years ago! He should be denied any job, especially a teaching job, in a Catholic school! How many poor, helpless babies have been killed– due to this evil and ignorant man?? Doesn’t the Church CARE anymore?? Does she no longer do the work of Christ??
Linda Maria, I am asking the same question, “doesn’t the Church care anymore?” I am a convert of two years. I love the Catholic Church. I attend Mass every day and participate in parish activities. One thing that has always bothered me, though, is why is there so much dissent in the Church and why is it allowed to continue? We have priests and religious that believe and teach contrary to what the Church teaches. We have parishes that openly advertise they are “gay friendly”. We have Catholic schools and universities where our kids are taught that abortion, contraception, and a homosexual lifestyle is OK. At a Catholic school in Calif. 400 students protest against the firing of a teacher that was marrying his “gay” friend. These kids should be supporting the Catholic school instead of the teacher. I read about a Christmas party at a diocese somewhere where the gay priests were in charge and one of the straight priests that got upset was told to keep his mouth shut. The story got out but I’m pretty sure that there is no investigation going on. Someone help me understand how this happens. What is the Church going to look like in fifty years with all of these young people that are now being taught that it is OK to go against Church teachings?
Gary O,
Our Blessed Mother at Akita told us what to do “stay with Tradition”. Even a Pope cannot go against Tradition and expect to be followed by truly Catholic people.
Hope this helps you, you made the right decision two years ago, but to preserve it, you must stay with Tradition.
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika!
Viva Cristo Rey!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Gary, welcome to the fold! I wonder what commandment you were given when you joined our Church?
Gary O., do not put your Faith in human beings. All of us are sinners in one way or another. This includes Popes, Bishops, Priests, Nuns and Laity.
Even Jesus’s chosen 12 Apostles were sinners.
Stick to your Catholic BIBLE and the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” in entirety for your moral compass.
Tell all your family, friends and acquaintances to do the same. Help save their Souls.
Gary O, I don’t know what diocese you live in, but I have never seen a parish advertise itself as gay-friendly. But you are correct that there is dissent in the Church. You are in the right place and you are doing right. It is important to stand firm in the Faith. The devil will try to dissuade you and make you think you were mistaken. Just stand in the Truth. If you hear a priest or nun say something wrong, you have the perfect opportunity to correct them by saying “I am a new Catholic and my understanding is that the Church’s teaching is …. ” I have never heard of a Catholic school where abortion, contraception and homosexual lifestyles are taught as OK. (There are universities that have dissidents on staff.) If you know of this happening, please contact the bishop’s office and tell them. The Catholic Church is made up of millions of people and not all of them are faithful. In order to stay faithful, attending daily Mass is paramount. Also, the daily Rosary. If you have a copy of the Liturgy of the Hours or can get one, that is very good because it is the Church’s prayer. Daily Bible Reading and mental prayer is important. Also, the Mercy Chaplet. I am sorry if you have to endure a situation that is not holy. Also, everything that is on the internet is not true. Some of it is distorted. Some websites that call themselves Catholic are not. Do you have a spiritual director or priest that you have confidence in to help you? Above all, pray, pray, pray. Do you have a good prayerbook?
In times of crisis, stick to Tradition, Gary. Focus on personal sanctification. Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales is a great guide for those who desire to please God in the world.
God bless and thank you for corresponding to the grace of conversion.
Bingo! You bring up questions that many have sought answers to. Some Bishops are great, others not so much, chosen not for sanctity, but for PC- ness and fund-raising ability. Shame.
Notre Dame University is run by the Holy Cross Fathers. IF Brother Andre, A Canadian saint were alive today, he would be ashamed at the way his congregation is ruining the Catholic Church. In the Maritime provinces of Canada, the Catholic Church has almost disappeared thanks to the Holy Cross Fathers. And getting back to Notre Dame, Archbishop Fulton J Sheen proclaimed in the 1960’s that parents should not send their children to so-called Catholic Colleges as they would loose their faith. Well, it is over 40 years later, and look at the damage this once, great Catholic university , and other ‘Catholic’ colleges has caused. Today, in 2014, there are only a hand full of colleges in the United States that are truly Catholic. What a shame. As I have pointed out many times, Our Lord mandated us to go forth and teach, NOT ERROR, but THE TRUTH. His command has not been carried out, and His divine vengeance will fall hard on those who have betrayed Him.
When the pro-abort California governor, Pete Wilson, nominated the pro-abort “Catholic,” Ming chin, to become a state supreme court justice, they put Fr. John P. Schlegel first on the list of folks to testify in behalf of Chin.
If a Catholic priest could wholeheartedly endorse the pro-abort Ming Chin, then the testimony of the pro-life folks against chin would be marginalized.
Schlegel, of course, is a Jesuit priest encamped in the Jesuit quarters surrounding the University of San Francisco. No other jesuit priest came to testify against Chin.
Only one priest came to uphold the teachings of the Catholic Faith—he was Fr. Leo John Celano, a Norbertine priest from southern California.
Father Fessio has asked us to make the following comment:
“In my haste I failed to make an even more important point regarding Major Error #1: If the fetus is only a potential human being, what kind of (species of) being is it actually?”
Thank you, Father Karl. You are quite correct in all you have said.
To expand upon Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s statement advising parents to avoid sending their children to “so-called Catholic” colleges, it is, of course, ideal to send one’s children to a Catholic college truly worthy of the name.
The superb Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, located in a bucolic setting in Ventura County, the hidden gem of Southern California, is one of the finest of the truly Catholic colleges and is also greatly admired and respected scholastically. Thomas Aquinas College was founded as such by faithful Catholics for Catholic students seeking a classical education and has lived up to its legacy with sterling results.
Every Catholic parent who cares about their children and the way those children will ultimately help to shape the world in the future should do everything in his or her human power to prepare their children to be accepted by this exceptional four-year college.
This is a college that strongly supports Catholic students in their faith every day of the year and is in every way a truly Catholic college. I am certain that the beloved Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen would have applauded sending children to a truly Catholic college and would have admired and endorsed choosing Thomas Aquinas College for any Catholic college student who loves learning in a truly Catholic environment.
There is no question that TA is a great school in the Catholic tradition. There are a few others in the country that have come out as “really” Catholic. I wonder, however, how many students and how many parents send their kids to Notre Dame, Marymount, etc. because it is Catholic? Most parents I know think of these schools as great places to get an education, but not great because it is Catholic. This is likely the result of the schools determining that good press is more important. I would not expect a catholic college to be Catholic anymore.
So how many dead babies does Professor Gutting want? 10? 10,000?, 10,000,000? More proof that Notre Dame is a Fake Catholic University!
May God Bless Father Fessio! Shame on Prof. Gutting!
In the Fall of 1980 I returned to school for a Master of Arts in Religious Education. I spent one semester at the University of San Francisco and after three or four weeks I was beginning to wonder if I was on the wrong campus as the courses I was taking were barely catholic. In desperation I called Fr. Fessio who in turn referred me to Fr. Brian Mullady, O.P. In February 1981 I arrived in Rome to begin what was to be six and one half wonderful years of study at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Dominicans). I received the Bachelors in Sacred Theology, a License in Sacred Theology, and a License in Canon Law. I spent nearly twenty-two (22) years working as a canon lawyer for the Catholic Diocese of San Diego. The year 2009 brought retirement. Since January 2010 I’m a volunteer missionary living in the Archdiocese of Kaduna, Nigeria (West Africa). I teach courses in canon law and moral theology at Good Shepherd Provincial Major Seminary. I am blessed that over fifty of the young men I have taught are now Catholic Priests. I am also working for the Provincial Marriage Tribunal doing the same things that I did in San Diego. Every day I give praise and glory to God. I will also be forever grateful to Father Fessio.
Gosh, Mary Jo Gretsinger, thank you for sharing the wonderful ways you have spent so many years of your adult life serving God and humankind. Your life’s work is a gift to us all. I wish I had been as wise as you were at such a young age and had spent my life in such worthy ways. God bless you always, and all those whose lives you have touched. I have heard your name before though I can’t recall in what context, except that I remember you were spoken of highly. Your life’s work could serve as an inspiration to young girls who want to serve Our Lord but don’t quite feel the calling to become a nun. Let us hear more from you in future comments please!
Unfortunately, erudition and knowledge does not necessarily equate to wisdom, as Prof. Gutting demonstrates. Without wisdom, all your knowledge is as clanging brass or a tinkling cymbal.
False teaching is not knowledge or education.
When Universities and Colleges call themselves “Catholic” and do not use a “Catholic Bible”
AND
the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” as two of their required texts,
then students are at the mercy of professors who potentially teach error – accidentally or on purpose.

Thank you Mike, and Anne T.
We must all tell everyone we know so they can learn the truth of the contents of the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” from the Magisterium.
If the Bishops will not do their jobs, we must do it for them.
What is happening all over the world is an indictment against most Diocese Bishops, and their Priests, and others who are supposed to be teaching the Faith.
It is a general failure “F” in teaching.
Their very own surveys condemn their lack of action.
Catholics do not know their Faith or the Reasons why.
Pope Francis wants us all to be the “salt of the earth”.
He needs to start with his own Bishops.
Most of the Laity do not accurately know enough about the Faith to spread it to others.
(Therefore they adopt the pagan ways of the world including: relativism, and secularism; sacrilege, scandal, heresy, schism; and idolatry – of money and various things such as electronics.)
Read a ‘Catholic’ Bible and the CCC at home in place of tv, or playing on computers and other electronic devices.
Encourage other literate persons to do the same.
If Catholic families (parents in particular) knew their Faith, according to the Bible and the CCC – then heretics and schismatics in Colleges and Universities would not be able to teach lies to the students.
Where are our Bishops ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
(It is also their job to correct SCANDALS that lose Souls.)
