After learning that students at Loyola Marymount University allegedly were required to include their preferred pronouns on assignments and are given the option to change their name and gender identity, an alumni-led group is petitioning the Los Angeles-area Catholic school to stop its “institutional commitment to gender ideology.”
The petition partly stems from an email that a professor, Christopher Miller, allegedly sent to students on Sept. 9. The content of the email was posted on Twitter Nov. 12 by Libs of Tik Tok, a popular conservative Twitter account.
Loyola Marymount’s website identifies Miller as Bhagwan Mallinath Assistant Professor of Jainism and Yoga Studies.
“I added a new syllabus to Brightspace and the one major change we all need to take note of is that all are required to include their gender pronouns next to their name in their blog posts,” the alleged email reads. “I will count this toward your grade when I check for your name each time I grade the blogs.” Brightspace is a software platform for online teaching.
“Our own LMU Provost links this article in his own signature after he identifies his pronouns,” Miller allegedly wrote. “For those who are not aware of why this is important please take a few minutes to read this article.”
The linked article, addressing the importance of respecting one’s personal choice of pronouns, appears on a website called MyPronouns.org.
“Using someone’s correct personal pronouns is a way to respect them and create an inclusive environment, just as using a person’s name can be a way to respect them,” the article states.
“Actively choosing to ignore the pronouns someone has stated that they go by could imply the oppressive notion that intersex, transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people do not or should not exist.”

Don’t y’all have something better to do with your time? Call me anything, just don’t call me late for dinner!
LMU should no longer exist. I don’t affirm its current secularist identity. How’s that?
CANCEL CULTURE
So, to be clear Anonymous you don’t affirm its existence, so you want to cancel the students and faculty of LMU? You want to associate yourself with the so called cancel culture?
Some things and people deserve to be canceled.
YFC—Your 01 Dec 21 comment piles non sequitur upon non sequitur—your predictable response to any questioning/criticism of Woke gibberish.
Hey queeny you didn’t even demonstrate one non sequin or let alone a pile of them, then you go on to an ad hominem. Proving you can’t answer the question. Anonymous at 12/1 said LMU should no longer exist. That’s a pretty ultimate form of cancel culture. So do you or do you not support cancel culture?
LMU has canceled itself. It’s completely unfaithful to its founding educational mission and identity as a Catholic university. To continue calling itself LMU when it has ceased to be LMU is a lie. The Board of Directors and the Jesuits should have the honesty to sever the university’s ties with Catholicism and the Jesuit Order, dissolve the current school charter, and recharter the school as a secular private university.
What to call the newly chartered university?
Well one thing all these extra fake pronouns do is scatter your brain, and make even young people forget what they are about to say.
That is what the whole Monty Python skit called “Loretta” is about. (Warning it is a little racy). And that skit was produced when there were still only four singular pronouns being used — “he, she, you and it”. The newer “pronouns” will destroy the English languague totally — that is unless one refuses to use them.
I would like to clarify that I usually do not recommend Monty Python skits, but the one I mentioned is not pornographic. It only uses one proper word (not a vulgar term) for an intimate body part, but I do not recommend it for the very young. That is what I meant by rather racy. Some of the other skits by them I would not recommend at all.
More pearl clutching from our catholic Pollyanna. Will this gentle observation make it thru?
thatdirtylittlerat– Stop calling fine Catholic women “pearl clutchers!” You need respect for Womanhood! Vulgar, coarse, crazed radical feminists of today’s filthy “garbage culture in the gutter,” are not “women,” they are sick political activists seeking to destroy Womanhood! Many are lesbians.
Thank you for defending me, but he is very wrong. I am anything but a Pollyanna but am a realist, known to use a few “choice” words when warranted. I just do not like a barrage of unnecessary vulgarity. It hurts ones ears and makes one appear uneducated.
I and many other Catholic ladies, are proud to wear a lovely dress with matching pearl necklace and earrings, to church, to work, to concert performances, and for other special occasions. Ladies are also often given fine jewelry by their loving husbands, who are very proud of their lovely wives.
1 Timothy 2:9-10
Similarly, [too,] women should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes,
but rather, as befits women who profess reverence for God, with good deeds.
yeah– Wearing lovely modest clothing and traditional, modest jewelry is lovely, feminine and appropriate for a mature grown lady of any age. One must never act as many of the filthy, coarse, immodest, cheap, vulgar, dirty, disrespectful, promiscuous youth of today. One must respect God-given Wonmanhood. A woman should be proud to dress modestly, in feminine attire, with good manners and good morals, always! We need a good Dress Code in today’s churches, and respect for the Blessed Sacrament!
Anne TE– thatdirtylittlerat is no gentleman.
I have known many lovely secretaries, including church secretaries, too (all races– Anglo, Hispanic, Filipino, Asian, etc.) — even those who worked just part-time– who always wore a lovely, modest, conservative dress to work, high heels, and a modest, lovely string of pearls, and matching earrings— or another lovely necklace and matching earrings.
Even a string of inexpensive, or “faux pearls,” is lovely, on a woman!
Your adornment should not be an external one: braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God.
1 Peter 3:3-4
just sharing– Lovely Catholic ladies do not “adorn” thenselves like vulgar pagan women. They love God and are modest and conservative in their dress and attire–lovely inside and out.
RenewLMU is holding a peaceful protest outside the next LMU Board of Trustees meeting, on Mon. Dec. 6th, 7-9am, at the corner of Lincoln and LMU Dr., near the LMU fountain. All are encouraged to attend and participate. The LMU President and his administration have failed to address many important issues and problems on campus. Recently, another incident happennd, in which Pro-Life students were harassed and cyber-bullied heavily. President Snyder refused to answer all requests for help, regarding this terrible and unfair situation.
When you click the link petitioning, it is about bullying not about pronouns. It says this:
.As the mother of two current students at Loyola Marymount University, I am appalled at the cyber-bullying that occurred toward a group of pro-life LMU students. In opposition to the Planned Parenthood fundraiser, a small group of pro-life LMU students chose to table on campus a few days before the event. A photo of the group was posted on Instagram by a comedic account which harshly ridiculed the group of pro-life students. What followed were over 200 comments on this photo from LMU students. A number of the comments were vile and hateful in content, some even ridiculing the appearance of the pro-life students and mocking them. This is cyber-bullying. Pro-life students are already a minority on campus. Should Catholic and pro-life students be afraid to share their personal views?
me– RenewLMU has many different petitions for different evils they want the President to stop, on campus. I always sign every petition they send me, by email.
““Actively choosing to ignore the pronouns someone has stated that they go by could imply the oppressive notion that intersex, transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people do not or should not exist.”” There are two sexes, male and female. The modern denial of this leads to pure insanity in practice. People uncomfortable with their biological sex need counseling, not pandering to their neurosis. This is entitlement culture on steroids, where instead we should only be entitled to conform to objective truth, not subjective fantasy.
Ok Dan apply your comments to those born with genitalia of both sexes. Not so apparent that they are either male or female is it?
God created us all either Male or Female. That’s all– you are born as either a boy or a girl. Of course, there are extremely rare medical cases of abnormalities, diseases, and disabilities. In the case of a medical abnormality, medical help should be given to help the patient adjust to life, and help them in making certain adjustments, to have the best life possible, given their condition.
God created mankind in his image;
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27
It does not say “male or female” and you did not say you were quoting the Bible but I have seen it misquoted in certain places so I wanted to post the quote.
cd– In this case, I was obviously not quoting the Bible. I was making the point that God just created two genders. And each person, at birth, is either a boy in a girl.
Sorry for the typo in my comment of Dec. 3, at 8:13am! I meant to say, that at birth, each person is either a boy or a girl.
No one is talking about people with genital defects. People with genital defects, who are rare, have a right to corrective surgery, but even they have more of one sex or the other in their DNA, so one still has to make the choice between male or female. Choosing all those other fake pronouns just leads to destruction of the language and insanity.
If a person has six or seven fingers on one hand, you do not tell them it is normal, and that scissors have to be made for six or seven fingered hands; you fix it by taking off the excess fingers.
Correction to fifth line in my last post: If a person has six or seven fingers on one hand, you do not tell HIM it is normal ……
Even I have gotten caught up in that silly gender pronoun nonsense at times.
There is a fantastic Australian evangelist and motivational speaker, Nick Vujicic, married with four children, who was born with no limbs! From an early age, his parents encouraged him to find creative ways to adapt and adjust so that he could lead as much of a normal life as possible. He is amazing!
This is exactly what they said. You think that they should not exist. If they do exist, then they need to change so that they appear not to exist.
u proved their point– No. Read the post again. If you have a disability, in order to live the best life possible, you have to learn to make adjustments and adaptations, creatively. Nick Vujicic was encouraged to do that from an early age. He is amazing!
That is not what I said. We all have abnormalities of some kind, especially as we get older, and we work to get our bodies to be as normal as possible without disrupting other people’s lives too much. Perfectly developed men saying they are women and completing with a real woman is unjust in most cases. A fully developed woman competing with a little boy for a title would be the same. Such things are unjust and done most often out of spite.
Correction to my last post, Dec. 3, 12:14 pm, third and fourth line. “Perfectly developed men saying they are women and competing with a real woman is unjust in all cases.
Reasons
1. It is fraudulent.
2. In a competition one woman might win the first prize because she is bigger and stronger than a man in competition, but it would be unfair to any other women involved that were not as strong, etc. and thus lost the second or third prize.
Polydactyl cats, with extra toes on their feet– look like they have mittens on, and they are so adorable! “Mitten Kittens!” Their extra toes, giving them “thumbs”– allow them to do some fun and interesting things! Polydactyl cats were adored by both Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Roosevelt, who always allowed his polydactyl cat, Slippers, to attend big White House dinners and parties. The polydactyl genetic trait can also be found occasionally, in other animals, as well as in some human beings.
YFC, the very good post of God Created Us Either Male Or Female at 7:17 is a sufficient reply. The very rare ambiguous cases do not constitute scientifically or morally a change in public policy. A baby born with ambiguous genitalia will likely have 1.Blood tests to measure hormone levels
2. Blood tests to analyze chromosomes and determine the genetic sex (XX or XY) or tests for single gene disorders 3. Ultrasound of the pelvis and abdomen to check for undescended testes, uterus or vagina; and 4. X-ray studies using a contrast dye to help clarify anatomy. The goal is to determine whether the baby is male or female, not neither male nor female.
Four stars, Dan. Excellent.
Hey, got here late
Only came to defend Anne TE
but she can hold her own pretty well
in the meantime, i’m pining for the fjords
Thank you, Scandanavian brother to the rescue.
I agree with the alumni group that Prof. Miller is indeed playing “gender ideology” in this case. Given the fact that the prevalence of true intersex or hermaphroditic births is pretty rare (0.018% according to a study by Leonard Sax published in the peer-reviewed academic journal entitled “Journal of Sex Research”) the number of students at LMU who may conceivably have a “preferred pronoun” based solely on this rare condition is very low, if not zero. Therefore you have a situation in which the people insisting upon “preferred pronouns” at LMU (apart from Miller) and at most American universities are either transgender or “gender non-conforming”, conditions which the Church doesn’t condone. Therefore the alumni group’s charge that LMU, a Catholic institution, or at least Prof. Miller, is playing to “gender ideology” has legitimacy and validity. Plus, insisting that the wider population use “preferred pronouns” for a cohort that may have little to no presence at any university (intersex individuals) is indeed a form of ideological oppression.
Great post, Jon. We do agree on some things.
Nicely put, jon. Bravo!

A priest’s view on why we should use preferred pronouns
https://www.ncronline.org/news/opinion/why-catholics-should-use-preferred-gender-pronouns-and-names
The Vatican statement “Male and Female He Created Them: Toward of Path of Dialogue on Gender Theory in Education” does not address the issue.
I will not use anyone’s preferred pronouns. Language is not personal nor subjective. Language is social and objective. If you have a thing you are a he. If you don’t have that thing then you are a she. Case closed.
I do not think you named yourself language. I have had times when the website took my post before I could put the name in and the website put in words from my post as my name. I also posted anonymously because I could not think of a name.
I think they originally said that they would not post anonymous posts. Rather than invent names for anonymous posts, I think they should just post them as anonymous for a time and remove them if the anonymous does not post back with a name to put it. Or just not post them at all.
I also think that they should limit the characters in the name.
It ain’t my website so of course it is the decision of the owner.
President Snyder should invite the SF Gay Men’s Chorus to come sing “We’re Coming for Your Children” at a LMU event.
Hey “Coming for your Children;”
how right you are, unfortunately
but isn’t it odd they got to LMU admin first?
That is how people who think they are right and you are wrong act. If they can’t convince you that you are wrong, they try to convince the people that you have influenced.
This is why Catholics don’t proselytize. We evangelize, instead.
This is why First Nations are trying to preserve their heritage and why there is a moral outrage in Australia and Canada about the removal of children from indigenous homes to educate them.
