The following comes from a January 22 story in the Sacramento Bee.
More medical professionals, including nurses and midwives, would be permitted to perform certain early abortions under a new bill unveiled on Tuesday.
In a press conference at the Capitol that served both to introduce the bill and to mark the 40-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision, lawmakers and women’s health advocates said the measure is necessary for women in communities without abortion providers.
They cited a statistic that 52 percent of California counties do not contain a provider, other than hospitals, which often have only limited services.
“California will not go back. We are going to go forward,” Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, said. “And we are doing that by making sure that reproductive healthcare, that abortion services are available to every woman, to make sure that we all have access, whether we live in rural areas or urban centers, whether or not we are able to afford the procedure or whether we require assistance.”
Assembly Bill 154, authored by Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, would revive last year’s push to expand abortion access by allowing nurse practitioners to perform non-surgical early abortions.
[CCD editor: Atkins joined assembly speaker John Perez in a January 7 prayer service at Sacramento’s Blessed Sacrament cathedral hosted by Bishop Jaime Soto. According to witnesses, Atkins sat next to Perez in the front pew, while Bishop Soto greeted Perez personally. Atkins was famous in San Diego as the manager of Womancare abortion clinic.]
Gov. Jerry Brown ultimately signed a diluted version of the bill that allowed only non-doctor clinicians trained through a specific pilot program to perform the procedure. The bill extended that program, which is jointly administered by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and the University of California, San Francisco, until Jan. 1, 2014.
The California Nurses Association opposed the initial version of last year’s bill, saying it would be premature to expand beyond a pilot program before researchers at the University of California, San Francisco completed a multiyear study. The organization also had concerns about providing proper training and ensuring that the bill provided for an early first-trimester technique.
That landscape has changed now that U.C. San Francisco has completed its study and seen the results published in the American Journal of Public Health, Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said at the rally. The study concluded that trained nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse midwives could safely perform early abortions.
The California Nurses Association is pleased that the study has been completed, but is still developing its position on the bill, said Bonnie Castillo, government relations director. She said the organization has already held “productive” meetings with the bill’s sponsors aimed at clarifying some of the bill’s language.
“We anticipate that’s going to be achievable, but right now we believe that it’s just a process,” Castillo said.

I just googled “former abortionists”. I saw that it is a very active topic. I wonder how they were converted? Mostly prayer, but also a little bit of talk. I wonder if God is offended by Bishop Soto involving lost people in prayer? I would ask Him about it directly. Then if Bishop Soto has some fault in this, I would pray for him to God.
There were some women who were angry about breast cancer. They had photos taken of their mastectomy-ravaged torsos, and had young models’ heads photoshopped in. Their anger was pointless. I saw the same thing when people started carrying very graphic abortion signs. It’s true, abortion won’t stop until people see it. That wasn’t the problem, it was the sense of pointless anger some of the people carrying the graphic signs. It didn’t seem as much directed to a solution to the problem, as futile anger of a personal nature. I’m sure the looks on their faces meant as much to the spectators as what was on the signs.
I happened to be walking back up Market St. from Justin Herman Plaza. The people unassociated with the West Coast Walk for Life, with the jumbotron showing graphic images of abortion–we were asked not to associate with them–were still at it. But now after the march was over, there were only crowds of ordinary tourists, citizens and street people. My impression was that they found it all rather bewildering.
“Here is my Servant whom I uphold,
my Chosen One with Whom I am pleased.
Upon Him I have put My Spirit;
He shall bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry out, nor shout,
nor make His voice heard in the street.”
– Isaiah 41:1-2
Today I happened to need to read a page “On the Vice of Anger” by Saint Alphonsus Liguori:
“Saint Jerome says that anger is the door by which all vices enter the soul. Anger precipitates men into resentments, blasphemies, acts of injustice, detractions, scandals, and other iniquities; for the passion of anger darkens the understanding, and makes a man act like a beast and a madman.
” ‘My eye has lost its sight, through indignation.’ – Job 17:7. David said: ‘My eye is troubled with wrath.’ – Psalm 30:10. Hence, according to Saint Bonaventure, an angry man is incapable of distinguishing between what is just and unjust. In a word, Saint Jerome says, that anger deprives a man of prudence, reason, and understanding.
” ‘For the anger of man worketh not the justice of God.’ – James 1:20. The acts of a man under the influence of anger cannot be conformable to the divine justice, and consequently cannot be faultless.”
A bumper-sticker I saw:
Wag more.
Bark less.
Wegmore Barkless, i am a little confused both by your post and something I saw on YouTube. Can you clarify for me what you meant by: The people unassociated with the West Coast Walk for Life, with the jumbotron showing graphic images of abortion-we were asked not to associate with them. Who asked you? Were the people with the jumbotron the Created Equal group? Do you know why you were asked not to associate with them? Also, on Youtube, I saw a video of a man talking in front of a giant video screen, that showed a couple images of an aborted fetus and then a screen that said “And the Church looks on…” Was this the same group?
Thanks k, I found the post really confusing, as well. That this person wants to be as warm and mellow as a Rod McKuen poem is obvious, but does he or she mean we’re not to be angry at the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? haha Actually, it never got King Lear anywhere either…just insane.
Well, you know we laity in the Priesthood of All Believers have a less dignified role than those of whom Authority Personified, JESUS CHRIST THE PANCRATOR, said ”He who hears you hears ME”. It happens that Bishop’s Soto is my Bishop. He has authority over me to Teach, Sanctify and Govern. I owe him obedience. It was just so Rod McKuenish of me to ask Bishop Soto to Telk Those People To GO HOME who were planning on crashing the homosexualist meeting at St. Francis across from Sutter’s Fort. I know that Bishop Soto is trustworthy from the way he stood up to the homosexualists at a conference, perhaps a bit Rod McKuenish in telling them hard truths in a soft voice such as turneth aside anger. If I were ever to presume to be an interferer with Bishop Soto’s business, in these times like those of Pop Pius XII, if I had to shoulder their responsibility, I would melt away like the wicked witch of the west.
Wagmore Barkless, technicaly the “Priesthood of All Believers” is a concept of the Protestants who deny the ministerial preisthood. Sometimes Catholics use the term Universal Priesthood, although it is more accurate to say that the laity have a share in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. So tell us about this thing where you told Bishop Soto to tell the people who were going to crash the homosexualist meeting at St. Francis to go home. Did he do it? Are you talking about the meeting of St. Francis LGBTQ on Saturday, January 12? Were there demonstators or something? Please tell us what happened.
” A Jumbotron displaying a graphic video of aborted children was set up by an anti-abortion group midway along the walk route, despite efforts by Walk for Life organizers to dissuade the group from playing the video.” Catholic News Service, 1-28-2013
bah humbug anyone?
Who was the antiabortion group?
Wagmore Barkless, Thank you.
Wagmore Barkless,
I venture to say that I have been around more pro-abortion and, thanks be to God and His Mother, pro-life persons than you can even imagine, and I have never seen persons carrying such signs with hate on their faces, saddness and remorse yes, hate no!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Until God ordains otherwise, a man ought to bear patiently whatever he cannot correct in himself and in others. Consider it better thus — perhaps to try your patience and to test you, for without such patience and trial your merits are of little account. Nevertheless, under such difficulties you should pray that God will consent to help you bear them calmly.
If, after being admonished once or twice, a person does not amend, do not argue with him but commit the whole matter to God that His will and honor may be furthered in all His servants, for God knows well how to turn evil to good. Try to bear patiently with the defects and infirmities of others, whatever they may be, because you also have many a fault which others must endure.
If you cannot make yourself what you would wish to be, how can you bend others to your will? We want them to be perfect, yet we do not correct our own faults. We wish them to be severely corrected, yet we will not correct ourselves. Their great liberty displeases us, yet we would not be denied what we ask. We would have them bound by laws, yet we will allow ourselves to be restrained in nothing. Hence, it is clear how seldom we think of others as we do of ourselves.
If all were perfect, what should we have to suffer from others for God’s sake? But God has so ordained, that we may learn to bear with one another’s burdens, for there is no man without fault, no man without burden, no man sufficient to himself nor wise enough. Hence we must support one another, console one another, mutually help, counsel, and advise, for the measure of every man’s virtue is best revealed in time of adversity — adversity that does not weaken a man but rather shows what he is.
Thomas a Kempis, ”The Imitation of Christ”, Book 1, 16. Bearing with the Faults of Others.
Well, Wag More Bark Less and Anon, Archbishop Sheen had something to say about righteous indignation and lukewarm Catholics, too. There has to be a balance. There is such a thing as a sin of silence. I pray God that nurses and midwives REFUSE to do these abortions, so even if the law goes through, it will be ineffective. I pray we have more doctors and nurses trained to save both the mother AND the child. I pray the midwives deliver the children and not destroy them, even if they have to hide them or take them and leave them in a basket at another hospital than their own or have someone else do it. In other words, I hope we end up with a lot of Baby Moseses.
Oh, and I pray more women think twice before they have sex outside of marraige, and save it for marital relations, and that this society helps married couples stay married instead of doing everything to separate the couple as many are doing now.
Appalling in every way!
Yes I agree Maryanne
Abortion + Sodomy = 2 High Sacraments of Satanism and the Democratic Party (and those who vote Democrat)
Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, would revive last year’s push to expand abortion access by allowing nurse practitioners to perform non-surgical early abortions…. This slob just can’t wait to kill more unborn babies,,,what disgraceful human being….
Imagine — Christ sitting at the altar of Blessed Sacrament watching His own shepherd slobbering over an enabler of the legal killing of children. What would Christ do? Do you think that His anger at the desecration of His Father’s Temple by merchants would match His wrath over this overt theological corruption. Of course Bishop Soto should be immediately dismissed as Bishop. More importantly, the Church should close its doors until Men of Faith — who will go to their deaths to defend it — are ordained. But then, it is unlikely that Bishop Soto, or any of the clergy and staff that organized and took part in this sacrilege, believe in the Real Presence anyway. Where is the Vatican? Where is the Pope, who alone can remedy the circumstances of overt complicity between the American Catholic Church and Political/Entertainment/Media forces?
Certainly the USCCB is a main culprit in this outrage, as is Cardinal Dolan. Nice to see, by the way, adherence to the Catholic norm for funeral masses during the same for baseball great Stan Musial. “Amazing Grace” as the lead-off hymn and an endless array of speakers during Mass. Wow. Time to hit the red button, Holy Father.
I’d be careful with that slobbering business. I’d be cautious about imagining that Bishop Soto disbelieves in The Real Presence.
”I tell you, on the Day of Judgment, people will render an account for every careless word they speak.”
Matthew 12:36
anon, consider that if you see and fail to bring to light, that you have violated the Scripture you just now quoted.
They always claim that Jesus Christ ate with sinners; problem is that they always invited Him, and He never invited them. When bishops invite these abominations to Mass, they are doing the opposite of what Jesus is recorded as doing.
There are a couple of facts about Toni Atkins that help explain her elevation in status. She was the first openly lesbian mayor of San Diego and is currently a member of the “California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus”. Just pop that organization into Google and you will see the other members – all of whom are fanatical promoters of the abominations of sodomy and abortion. Are the two evils related? They certainly are. They are based on rebuke of God’s laws of nature. If you support “gay rights”, you support “women’s rights”. These abominations are the keys to success in California government.
And for those who may be “straight”, it is imperative for success that they support “gay rights” and abortion also. In other words, they must be Democrats!
Excellent, very straight forward and clear point connecting the two abominations against God, namely abortion and gay rights.
People from his Diocese should email a link to this article to Abp Soto, so he can see the damage and scandal that he has perpetrated.
When politicians commit murder of the innocent, I would ask WHO they are praying to ? ? ? ?
Or do these evil politicians merely attend these prayer functions to dupe believers into voting for them.
When are some of these Bishops going to learn.
Invasive Surgery – by non-surgeons/non-doctors – and this is supposed to be wonderful for women ?
Re: public excommunication of ‘Catholic’ politicians – ” Can. 1399 In addition to the cases established here or in other laws, the external violation of a divine or canonical law can be punished by a just penalty only when the special gravity of the violation demands punishment and there is an urgent need to prevent or repair scandals. ”
1 Cor 5:11-13.
I noticed the condition, “special gravity”, and am supposing from the evidence that this will be when the number of abortions matches the number of dollars in US debt.
Help! Help! The sky is falling!! Someone go help maxcsz77s7y before he self-implodes, poor man.
I already did fax this article to Bishop Soto. I’m sure he has a special prayer for the pharisaical ”Real Catholics”.
While on the subject, are CCD readers aware that our Catholic Church just won a legal victory here in the US in a wrongful death lawsuit alleging negligent ER treatment of a pregnant woman carrying twins who died in the ER because the Catholic hospital’s lawyer successfully argued that “fetuses aren’t babies, therefore they aren’t covered under wrongful death statutues”. The judge agreed and dismissd the wrongful death allegation for the twins against the Catholic hospital. What?
Interesting argument for the Catholic hospital’s lawyer to make, huh? Gloria Steinhem couldn’t have said it better.
I read that it was because they were already dead that they were declared not viable babies. I think maybe everyone is really getting into lashing out without checking Catholic news or something a little less bigotted . What’s going on here, anyway?
It was Catholic Health Initiative, not the Catholic Church. Dana is right. the Catholic news sources have a lot more detailed information. Eternal rest grant unto Lori, Samuel and Zachary Stodghill and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Precious Blood of Jesus, have mercy on us.
I always like the part where they say they’re “going forward” … and I always wonder it it means Jurassic Park, like they’re moving evolution right along at a brisk pace. Evidently their most advanced specimins are the likes of Sen. Feinstein and Boxer in California and VP Biden in DC.
We live in an age of betrayal to Our Lord and Our Lady. We have so much institutional evil and moral corruption in the California state government and sadly in our own church. Jesus help us. Mary pray for us. This nation deserves chastisement with over 56,000,000 babies killed in 40 years. Evil Liberalism must be destroyed as it created Communism and Nazism and over 100,000,000 died under them. Liberalism is the antichrist that persecutes Christians and their leaders are crazy, insane, mean and evil people.
Yes that is true
MIDWIVES PERFORMING ABORTIONS!!!
That is all anyone should read in order to realize how sick these people are!!!! There is a special place in hell for these people and eternity is a long long time to have to spend there. Those poor innocent babies, please forgive us for not protecting you, we are trying, but we must do more to end this madness and change these hardened hearts!
EVIL!
WE MUST CONTINUE TO SPEAK UP!!!
Would anyone want to guess how many pro-abortion, including a keynoter, speakers there are at Abp. Gomez’s REC this year?
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
