A sold-out crowd of more than 2,500 gathered Saturday, November 3 for the inaugural Magnificat Day of Faith, the first-ever global Catholic event held within the world-renowned Crystal Cathedral sanctuary, the future Christ Cathedral for the Diocese of Orange.
“The opportunity to have The Magnificat and this event come to Orange County is a testament to the Diocesan vision for the Crystal Cathedral as a universal gathering place for people to pray and celebrate our faith,” said Father Christopher Smith, rector and episcopal vicar of the future Christ Cathedral….
The keynote featured Clara Gaymard, President and CEO of General Electric (GE) France. Gaymard is the daughter of Dr. Jérôme Lejeune, a Catholic geneticist and the father of modern genetics who discovered the chromosome for Down’s syndrome. He died in 1994 and is under consideration for sainthood by the Catholic Church.
An influential businesswoman, best-selling author, wife and mother of nine, Gaymard spoke about her father’s compelling story as a Servant of God.
“I’m not a historian, nor a doctor, nor do I have faith like that of my father,” said Gaymard, “but I had the grace to be his daughter and I feel entrusted with the task to tell people who he was.”
The Magnificat Day of Faith also featured the Pacific Chorale. Led by artistic director John Alexander, the group performed Bach’s Magnificat to its largest live audience ever. The event was globally broadcast live by CatholicTV.com.

“It’s a really big shew”, as the late Ed Sullivan would say. When, I wonder, is the really big reality going to happen?
Isn’t General Electric a big supporter of the Obamanation?
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
When I think of the Christ Cathedral Campus and see your name on a posting I smile — broadly. Your bigotry and hatred for that which you do not personally like or understand (despite what the Church might say) is so appalling that I find it humorous. You’re the epitome of a cafeteria catholic.
Rodda your comments are hateful and if you are so charitable and loving as your lukewarm ways have conveyed here…why not stop hating….Mr. Fisher is a good man and frankly I don’t ever recall hearing your name praying in front of abortion clinics nor have you been jailed for trying to save babies…stop your bashing of our elders, you can learn from their wisdom!
Maybe GE supplies the lighting for the building.
Where’s the Tabernacle???????
The conversion has not reached that point yet and they are not allowed to celebrate mass in the structure either. There is a lot to do before it is a Catholic cathedral.
I am tired of “celebrating the faith” How about a little pain for the Faith among the Clergy? Its like dancing in ones own ruined city to hear Catholics in this day and age speak of “Celebrating”
MKM I think that our youth are still young and still growing, if this plants the seed to get them to notice the faith…so be it! I may not agree with the building and I don’t know if it was good or bad but I do know that our local Catholic University helped get the word on this and I hope that it will at least enlighten our youth to grow more in the faith.
No Mass, no Blessed Sacrament, no need for a tabernacle. Got it?
Tabernacle – inside is the Body of Jesus.
The greatest gift – – –
Give me Jesus any day.
Without the tabernacle we can just as easily pray at home, and say a Rosary with our family.
Rodda you are so hostile here in regards to this topic against those with conviction, that i am questioning if this function was really a good idea…if you had attended, why on earth aren’t you living your faith by being more charitable to those who have concerns…after all the ones commenting are actually those who defend the faith! SO stop it because you are pushing me to siding with those whom you have attacked here for their personal convictions.
WRONG.
We don’t go to the Mass to be near the tabernacle. We don’t even go to Mass primarily to receive Holy Communion. We go for the Sacrifice. Think before you type.
On the other hand I cannot pray in concert with thousands of my fellow Catholics at my house. It was a great event.
My husband and I flew down from No. CA to attend this Magnificent Event! Truly uplifting, informative and beautiful. The new “Christ Cathedral” with hanging panels that looked just like the finest stain glass windows in our Traditional Churches helped us to envision how this huge space will be converted by July 2013. The music, speakers and schedule for the entire day was just perfect. Thank you to the Orange Diocese for making us feel so welcomed and to Magnificat for the wonderful Day of Faith to kick off our Year of Faith!
I am happy to hear that you actually attended and enjoyed it. Don’t mind the bigoted reactionaries that dominate this forum. In all sincerity most of cafeteria catholics who attack anything that doesn’t precisely fit their own beliefs of what is good and bad.
There is no such thing as a cafeteria Catholic.
Only Faithful Catholics, Catholic Heretics, Catholic Schismatics, and Ignorant Catholics.
Those who do not adhere to the teaching of the Church in the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” are heretics or schismatics.
There is no excuse for ignorance, since the Magisterium gave the World the CCC.
You’re so very wrong.
This forum is FULL of cafeteria catholics — people who pick and choose what they will accept from the Church. People who think THEY know better than the Holy See. People who make THEMSELVES the arbiters of who adheres and who does not adhere to the teachings of the Church.
Which group gets to judge the others?
Rodda there you go again….your comments have no regard for those who have concerns..you have brought division with words like “bigoted reactionaries” “hatred” etc….that is not the behavior of a Christian! Please stop it…it only questions more if this actually moved “you” personally in being a better person in Christ and bashing Christ’s traditional faithful is not so becoming!
“…Who have concerns…”?
You’re talking about those on this forum that continue to attack that which they personally do not like? That’s hardly being “traditional” or “faithful.”
We get it that you and others have been conditioned to hate Christ Cathedral. It’s a done deal. Get over it already.
Rodda it is you who needs to get over it! I’m only reacting to your nasty comments.
I’m even more happy that the people of splash and flash will be going there and not here.
JLS you are funny. : ) You know my hubby is a convert, he actually told me that when we visit up to that area, that if they ever start having mass, he would like to attend just to see if they are faithful…..wow…even my hubby. What can I say. Oh well, I’m sure to many it is just a curiosity.
But just to clarify, this function that they had here, I am neutral about it because I do like the Magnificat.
They seem to have a beautiful pipe organ already from the pictures on the link in this article to the Catholic Television website.
Sandra,
“Hanging panels that look just like the finest stained glass windows?” Sandra, Is that all it took? While you were able to thoroughly enjoy the Magnificat Event for “one” day. Here is some information that is also informative. Pastors in the Diocese of Orange are FURIOUS and very frustrated because money is needed for many building improvements and other important necessities at their home parishes and they feel they are being hamstrung and squeezed to squeeze the people for more money so that this terrible financial burden will be paid for by the people of the Diocese of Orange.
This is the Diocese of Orange’s own fateful version of squeezing blood out of already dried up turnips and then investing people’s hard earned money in a white elephant glass paneled Solyndra. Sandra, Do you think that God is interested in Solyndra Mega Style Churches so that Mega Bucks roll in? Haven’t we just witnessed what God also allowed at a “one day event”. We now have Obama and many are just as enthused about his window dressings too.
The purchase of this monstrous white elephant should not be hoisted on to the backs of parishioners. It is one thing to be spiritually robbed of certain teachings of the Catholic Faith throughout the entire year, but expecting people to finance their own robberies is ludicrous.
It is wrong to financially fleece the people while they are already spiritually paying a steep price just because some were schmoozed and entertained at a “one day” event.
As several clergy put it. “People do not have a clue how we have to walk on eggs when teaching and they do not have a clue as to the kind of political red tape and pressure we are being placed under. We just want to teach the faith.”
Sandra, Window dressings are important. As a matter of fact the Diocese of Orange used a training tape that talks about luring people in with the fashion of the day. That is why department stores use window dressings to lure in potential spenders. Behind the scenes the reality is not quite as rosy and attractive as they got you to believe for just *one day’s event.”
The Magnificat….”MY SOUL DOTH MAGNIFY THE LORD”….not The Magnificat Event for just one day” so that we can magnify the $$$$$!
Pastors need to stop getting pissed off; they are not Bishops. And Those pastors of Orange county waste soo much money on facilities they do not need instead of building churches worthy of our Lord
Let them get squuzed. Its not their money.
Faithful Pastors are not the ones who live in luxury homes in exclusive areas of Orange County. Faithful Pastors do not purchase Barney costumes to give Barney blessings during Mass. Faithful Pastors did not want to spend extra money to build side chapels to hide Tabernacles. Stop flip flopping! I thought you said that Catechesis needed to be improved. You can’t have it both ways. Catechisms, refurbished air conditioning and heating systems are not luxuries but they will be in Solyndra South!
I now understand even more why faithful Pastors are frustrated. There are many who speak out of both sides of their mouth. These individuals ask Catholics on one thread to WAKE Up because they are concerned about the wolves being in charge of the henhouse. When a faithful Bishop in Nebraska speaks up, they post that nothing will change until seminaries are cleaned up and catechesis is improved, which is true. Then on another thread they flip flop to criticize those who would like to improve these things. Beware of inconsistent chieftains who speak with double-fork tongues.
Beware of blowhards in Nebraska as well…
That is so true about the seminaries, Catherine. From all I’ve read, so many are churning out many priests who’ve been poorly catechized and are actually programmed for teaching false doctrine.
Also, it would help to root out all the sordid homosexual coteries that seem to stink up so many seminaries.
The Christ Cathedral Campus was an absolute bargain at $57.5M. Yes I am aware you don’t like it but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good buy.
When squeezed for money, I give less or none.
JLS I totally understand, I have been facing some financial hardships so I watch where I put my money now…like you said when squeezed for money.
All for the Glory and Praise of the Lord! Christ Catedral is magnificent and will Glorify Our Lord immensely–no pun intended.
The Day of Faith was a blessed event for the Glory of God. We praised Him, we adored Him, we sang praise to Him and listened to Holy Priests and inspired testimony. All day long in prayer–Thank you Jesus!
Sounds like a wonderful and faithful event. Sadly the bigoted and hateful reactionaries on this forum will attack it because it took place at the beautiful Christ Cathedral Campus — a campus they have been conditioned to hate by their own poor taste and too many hours reading garbage by people like Mike Rose and sitting in front of the tube watching EWTN.
“An influential businesswoman, best-selling author, wife and mother of nine.”
Just awesome…
haha. Talk about bigoted and hateful, Mr Rodda, you take the prize. In a free society, people are allowed to have opinions that don’t necessarily tally with our own but we don’t call them names and treat them like pariahs. I agree with you that the event was really great and I ‘sat in front of the tube (or in this case, my computer) and watched Catholic TV.com’ to watch the marvelous singing and the moving tribute to her father Dr. Jérôme Lejeune, a faithful Catholic and geneticist who suffered for his faith, by Clara Gaymard, President GE, France. I’ve never heard of Mike Rose, however, and since he is in your black books, I’m definitely going to give him a look see.
Dana, I just read noticed your post for the first time. I sincerely hope you looked up “Michael Rose.” You will have now learned if you did not already know the reason for Mr. Rodda’s informative comment. The reason I am bringing this up now is that recently two very well qualified individuals were asked to tour this building for specific reasons. They both went at different times with very open minds and they both play very important roles for this Diocese. They were astounded at the disrepair and terrible condition of this building, not to mention the expenses that are going to be incurred with the heating, cleaning and cooling costs that will be associated with all of that liability of glass. Dana, They did refer to the inside of this building as a huge “dump”!
The only thoughts that they could muster up were, “What in the world were they thinking?”
Christ the King is certainly as worthy as the luxurious new homes that our shepherds get the honor and privilege of residing in. No one should ever be pleased about placing Our Lord in a refurbished dump, that is more of a tribute to New Age. especially if they add more insult and hide the Tabernacle. Let Mr. Rodda or the big wheeler dealers who are so thrilled about their own selfish choice come up with their own personal money to pay for this bad idea. Thank you Dana for recognizing that comment about “Mike Rose”.
Dana I realize that a dump can be fixed up for millions of dollars but when the same voice that is threatened by Michael Rose’s book, “Goodbye Good Men.” is touting this purchase then buyers BEWARE. I am not speaking of the trappings of the “One Day” Magnifcat Event or the flying in of certain well known speakers, photo takes of nuns in full habits, singers or extravagant hoopla for the day.
They have been attempting to bus in unsuspecting tourists to raise more money to fix this giant white elephant. Unfortunately, there are many in this Diocese who cringe at the mention of Michael Rose’s name, let alone EWTN. Michael Rose not only exposed the problem of homosexual infiltration in the seminary, he also wrote a book on the new modern churches titled, “Ugly as Sin.”
Another idea for sermon time at Mass is to bring earplugs and a book of sermons by one of the Doctors of the Church, and read it instead of listening to the one coming over the P.A. system.
I read comments of both sides expressing charitably without personally attacking others here why they have a distaste for this but there is one poster here who anger has gone so low to label some here bigoted and haters. These words did not need to be used, one does not need to agree but to use those very hateful words against faithful posters it is obviously a sign of our times….there is much indifference and division within. Sin has caused this division and indifference and lack of respect for our elders to lead. God have mercy on us all!
“An influential businesswoman, best-selling author, wife and mother of nine.”
Achieve that and then pop-off…
Again your hostile…so what! It’s what is inside that matters more….is the inside ugly?
I can assure you, Mr Rodda, that this gracious French woman would be highly indignant and offended at your remarks. Anyone can ‘pop off’ about whatever they wish, sir. In America it is called free speech, something of which you apparently have a very poor understanding. What is it that makes so-called liberals so intolerant and mean-spirited? They also lack an ability to laugh at themselves, which is a real loss for they are an over-burdened barque of frailty just begging to be a source of laughter and merriment. For example, I don’t see any evidence of your having nine children balanced with being a CEO, so what gives you the authority to pop off, using your ‘logic’. tee hee
Ladies, ladies. Calm down, and some of you gentlemen too.
I kind of like the cathedral, but then I am not paying for it either, so I will bow out now.
I spoke to many of the locals down there who are supporting this purchase. They are thrilled!
Sandra,
Jesus said, “I AM THE TRUTH,” he did not say, I am the custom.” – Saint Toribio
God will not ask us if we were thrilled and local. He will ask if we have been faithful.
Sandra,
There is nothing new under the sun. Many are thrilled, but few are chosen!
Anne T you are truly a good Christian soul! Your tone here is one of that….but to some others who just bashed those of opposite sentiments does show their true color.
Anne T I was referring to Rodda because he/she bashes those who oppose the expensive purchase….Roddas comments were very much uncharitable and held a tone of name calling.
Rodda I hope you are happy, I;m not letting this one go..ha ha
Anne, you’re allowed to like the Cathedral! I do too, but it doesn’t make us accomplices to Mr Rodda or enemies of Catherine and others who oppose it. I definitely sympathize with Catherine’s arguments, and they have merit. At the same time, I feel this was a rather exciting, serendipitous step on the part of those who took the bold step of purchasing this church for a Cathedral. I’m sure they probably had many a sleepless night wondering if they’d done the right thing. It was done, however, and now to make it a success people need to step out of their comfort zones and start seeing the possibilities!
Dana good comments, I am neutral about this whole thing. I have mixed feelings too all at the same time, I am just waiting patiently to see how this comes out as time goes but I do take into account what Catherine and some others mean. I also like Magnificat so to me it sounded like a positive event….but I am just standing aside with prudence and see how all this comes out in the future. I pray for faithfulness but we will see.
