In a January 2 letter to the priests of the diocese of San Diego, Cardinal Robert McElroy quotes the Vatican declaration on blessings for those in irregular situations.

“To seek a blessing in the Church is to acknowledge that the life of the Church springs from the womb of God’s mercy and helps us to move forward, to live better, and to respond to the Lord’s will.”

But in what sounds like a response to the criticism from around the world, McElroy says that “no liturgical ceremony of blessing for irregular or same sex relationships can occur” and that the diocese for this reason “will not be supplying any texts.”

And in what seems like recognition of opposition from San Diego priests, “I am also aware that some of would find it impossible to carry out such a ministry of blessing…. I support you in your decision….”
