Cardinal Sean O’Malley, archbishop of Boston, and Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego are among those chosen by Pope Francis as synod fathers in next month’s Amazon synod.
A full list of the 185 participants in the Special Assembly for the Pan-Amazonian Region was published by the Vatican Sept. 21. The synod is set to take place Oct. 6-27.
Among those taking part are 33 bishops nominated by Pope Francis, including O’Malley and McElroy, the only two United States’ bishops to be synod fathers in the Amazon synod.
Others nominated include Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life; Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, archbishop of Tegucigalpa; Cardinal John Ribat, archbishop of Port Moresby; and Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Bombay.
Non-bishops nominated include religious priests from Argentina, Peru, Angola, and Italy; Fr. Anthony Spadaro, director of La Civilta Cattolica; and Fr. Mauricio Garcia Duran, director of the Jesuit Refugee Service.

The purpose of the Synod is . . .?
O’Malley is 75. Why not appoint a younger person?
Well, I joined Cardinal Burke and Bishop Schneider’s 40-day crusade of fasting and prayer, for the Church! The Amazon Synod looks like another “synod disaster,” of Pope Francis’ reign! A leading Bishop of the Amazon area said on the news, that the synod completely misunderstood the true problems of the Amazon, and the issues of the synod’s instrumentorum laboris were a big mistake! He also said that the Amazon area had lost a great many Catholics to Protestant churches— – and the Catholic Church is struggling to survive, there!
Cdl. Maradiaga and Abp. Paglia—- SCANDALOUS! VERY BAD SYNOD MEMBERS!!!
Also– Cdl. Oswald Gracias, of Mumbai, India, has been involved in clergy sex abuse (cover-up) scandals!
Sin nod.
Very thankful Cardinal O’Malley and Bishop McElroy are participating in the amazing Amazon Synod. Both are loyal Catholics who are courageous, dedicated and thoughtful leaders in the Church in America.
This Synod is Vatican Council 2.2 The result is already predetermined.
What is the purpose of the synod? Are there hundreds of synods for hundreds of different regions of the world? What makes the amazon “religiously unique?” Does the pope care more about the planet than the souls of its human inhabitants? Does the pope think that God’s kingdom is of this earth? Francis generates a multitude of questions, but few theologically satisfactorily answers. Let all all pray for Divine enlightenment.
You can tell a lot by the friends they keep…
To be clear – this is a terrible choice!!
As everyone knows– the pantheistic “hippie theology” behind the Amazon Synod is totally ridiculous!
I have sadly been reading all about how the teachings of Pope St. John Paul II have been shoved aside at the reformed Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Life— instead, emphasizing the infamous Chapter 8 of “Amoris Laetitia”— and the new “theologians” promoting gay sex and birth control, under some circumstances— this Papacy is just constantly headed in the wrong direction!! Who can set things right, in our Church??
And what expertise on the Amazon Basin do these two American bishops have? Doctoral dissertations, extensive missionary work, fluency in the local languages????
I have read that 80% of the inhabitants have converted to Protestantism. Is that woeful failure of Catholic missionary effort going to be discussed?
Well, one comfort is that Robert Cardinal Sarah is being sent there, and he well knows how the indigenous have often been “colonized” in the wrong way. Whether they will listen to him is another matter.
Cardinal Burke and Bishop Schneider certainly are right for the need for prayer and fasting. I can only imagine similar discussion were made in Europe and here when Fr. Serra was sent to the Americas, and when poor Emperor Maximilian was tricked into thinking the Mexicans would just love to have him. I think his wife knew all along what a disaster it would be. At least the Vatican had the decency to take her into their care.
Don’t do the Amazon synod and they won’t leave. With it Pope Francisco will carry Vatican Council II to its logical conclusion: female and married priests. Took them over 50 years but Marxists never give up.
Sure reads like a Who’s Who of all the usual suspects.
