Things are heating up ahead of conservative firebrand Matt Walsh’s speech at Stanford University on March 1.
Flyers advertising the campus event were set ablaze by protesters, and event management platform Eventbrite removed the speech’s ticketing page, forcing organizers to set up a new ticketing platform last minute.
The incidents are the latest in a string of controversies surrounding Walsh’s pending speech at Stanford, his next campus stop in his collegiate speaking tour focused on criticisms of transgender ideology.
The Stanford student senate, which officially opposes the event, allocated funds for Walsh’s appearance to avoid “legal consequences,” but allocated thousands of dollars to counter protesters as well.
Walsh’s speech is co-sponsored by the Stanford College Republicans and Young America’s Foundation.
From The College Fix
Then this from the Stanford Daily:
Right-wing political commentator Matt Walsh spoke at an event co-organized by the Stanford College Republicans (SCR) and Young America’s Foundation (YAF) at Dinkelspiel Auditorium on Wednesday night, urging the audience to reject “insane and poisonous gender ideology.”
The event came the day after Walsh joined Mississippi governor Tate Reeves on Tuesday in signing a bill that restricts youth transition-related health care. Currently, Walsh is promoting his controversial 2022 documentary titled “What Is A Woman?” The film has been criticized for its transphobic content and opposition to LGBTQ+ education in schools.
No protests materialized during the event. Instead, Walsh’s speech was countered by Community Care events hosted by several student groups on campus, including Queer Student Resources (QSR), the Women’s Community Center (WCC) and Students for the Liberation of All Peoples (SLAP).
Speaking to a crowd of around 600 people, including individuals who are not Stanford students or affiliates, Walsh said, “I’m not concerned about your feelings, I’m concerned about the truth. You are either a man or a woman. You don’t get to choose which category you belong to….”
CCD-on another unrelated subject, you guys might like to write an article on former Jesuit priest Nicolas Reveles who just passed away.
There are only 2 genders, that’s the truth, we must embrace truth, not fairy tails. Thanks to Matt Walsh for speaking truth.
Stanford University should shame these terrible, immature, violent students, who destroyed the property of the Stanford College Republicans and Young America Foundation. These terrible, immature kids are all juvenile delinquents– not ready for college! They should face stern penalties– including, being told they will be kicked out of school, if they ever do this again! A note should go on their school records of their criminal behavior, parents should all be notified– and privileges should be removed. These hoodlums need to learn to behave like adults! In the real world, after college– you cannot act like a criminal, and destroy others’ property, simply because you disagree with their point of view. Kids should learn that, before they are even accepted into kindergarten.
For burning flyers?
Ya
Theft and arson are (still) crimes. Would you be okay with someone taking your property and destroying it?
Would you be okay with LMU students burning Angela Davis, James Martin or Cardinal McElroy fliers?
It is two flyers. What is the monetary value? 5 cents?
I do not think it is good behavior although when you put your posters over other people’s posters people might take them down but they do not need to burn them and put the image on the Internet.
I would say the same thing no matter whose posters were burned.
The fact that someone might have taken them down because they were trying to repress free speech is the real issue, not theft and “arson”.
Would you be OK if they burned a flyer for Angela Davis, James Martin or Cardinal McElroy?
Where did you come up with those names? You don’t want Catholics at public colleges?
In answer to your question, I choose names of other public figures.
Will you answer my question, would you be OK if they burned a flyer for Angela Davis, James Martin or Cardinal McElroy?
And, your question “You don’t want Catholics at public colleges?” doesn’t make sense. What are you referring to?
I said “I would say the same thing no matter whose posters were burned?”
Then I asked you if you would be OK if the burned a flyer for Angela Davis, James Martin or Cardinal McElroy? You did not answer.
Why did you pick the names of two Catholics who don’t speak at public colleges: James Martin and Cardinal McElroy?
Why didn’t you pick names like Hilary Clinton or Buttigieg or Oprah?
You name curious about consistency. Yes I am consistent.
And I missed your first question: Would I be OK with someone taking my property and destroying it?
There is very little of my property that I would care if someone destroyed. I need very little of it and am looking for ways to get rid of it. It seems wrong to trash it but I don’t know where to donate it. If they destroyed my meds, I would have a problem.
But let’s be more specific. If I was having an event at a public place and someone took down the flyers I had put up and then nobody came to the event, I would be upset. But if the event was full, it would be a “So what?”
I certainly would not charge them with arson or theft over 2 pieces of paper.
Does “saying the same thing” mean you’re okay with burning fliers of the others? That’s my question. Saying it’s not good behavior doesn’t answer the question.
I’m not okay with burning fliers or posters of anyone.
And, I don’t know what public college you’re talking about. And, how is that relevant?
James Martin has spoken at the University of Pennsylvania. Cardinal McElroy has spoken at UC San Diego. But, what does their speaking at public universities have to do with this story?
Is it OK to burn fliers? No.
But turn the other cheek like Jesus said.
Sorry I missed that you switch Universities. The article was about Stanford. That is why I said public university.
Stanford is a private university. It’s actually Leland Stanford Junior University, named after the son of the blatant racist California governor and Senator Leland Stanford, who lived in Palo Alto.
“Stanford is a private university. It’s actually Leland Stanford Junior University, named after the son of the blatant racist California governor and Senator Leland Stanford, who lived in Palo Alto.”….should the university change its name?
Students should face penalties at school for destroying any property of any type. Period. Stealing, destroying property, etc. are crimes. You cannot break the law and act like a juvenile delinquent at school– or anywhere else. Kids have to grow up and learn to deal with those who disagree with their ideas and beliefs, in a mature, adult manner. Stanford U. Is not a pigpen for ignorant, violent juvenile delinquents, who think they can do whatever they want. This terrible student behavior is happening on many college campuses, and needs to be stopped. High schools and colleges are supposed to prepare kids for adulthood, not juvenile delinquency and criminal behavior.
Not hard to understand the left’s abhorrence of free-speech, which is really an abhorrence of historic (as opposed to modern liberal) Christianity. Take God out of the calculus and you are left with totalitarian-speak and action in its place — the new religion.. It is incredible how blind these students are to their own myopia; you would think this caliber of student would display a greater depth of philosophical/moral awareness. It seems the more dogmatically stilted of these would be out of their depth in a parking lot puddle. Tragic.
Flyers set ablaze?
Aren’t these geniuses.
worried about all the carbon dioxide
that was released ???
Leftists no longer even make a pretense of being for free speech. The “woke” left make up the majority of book banners and burners today. No Dr. Seuss, no Mark Twain and no speakers like Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro or Charlie Kirk. JK Rowling will be next. Anything one disagrees with is now a “trigger.” Unless it’s being pulled by leftists.
at least there are no longer any campus
streets or buildings named after Padre Serra
on the Stanford campus.
thank Leland !!!
not, actually it is. California Penal Code 451 PC defines the crime of arson as willfully and maliciously setting a fire, causing, or aiding another person someone to burn a structure, forest land, or property. Specifically, California Penal Code Section 451(d) – arson of the defendant’s property or another person’s property. (I’m a retired arson investigator.) I investigated a fire at a local Catholic university where a student set fliers on fire. In that case, it was at night and they were on a corkboard bulletin board in a dorm hallway with other fliers and combustible materials (obviously a more dangerous situation than appears from the photo in this story). Whether a Deputy District Attorney is willing to pursue prosecution is another matter. There are often acts that are criminal that are not prosecuted.
Gov. Ron DeSantis gave a talk to a sold-out crowd Sunday afternoon, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA. His talk was about his new, bestselling book, “The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.” Prior to the event, early Sunday morning, Library staff found the Reagan Library sign outside vandalized with graffiti. Fortunately, they were able to get the sign cleaned up before DeSantis arrived. Shame on the immature juvenile delinquents or criminals, who vandalized the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library sign! They should be prosecuted, and penalties should be imposed by the law, for this! Also, there were shameful protesters at this event. They should all shut up, act like adults, and politely listen to what DeSantis has to say. Or else stay home. I will look on YouTube for his talk. Are our universities now turning out mindless, anti-American, WOKE, leftist morons, immature, mentally-unstable, shameful vandals, arsonists, and violent protesters– unfit for society??
“Are our universities now turning out mindless, anti-American,
WOKE, leftist morons, immature, mentally-unstable, shameful
vandals, arsonists, and violent protesters– unfit for society??”
Yes ……. most shamefully.
No. Good college students don’t make the news.
Here is a link to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ speech yesterday, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, in Simi Valley, CA: https://www.reuters.com/world/us/ron-desantis-attacks-liberals-california-speech-he-mulls-white-house-run-2023-03-05/
“Sign vandalized” I guess you’d prefer our universities turn out insensitive anti-immigrant homophobes who spit their exaggerated concerns at anybody who will listen.
Who said he is a Reagan? Are you a vandal?
Or, okay with vandalism?
Your parents should teach you, starting in the family home, good manners and good Christian Morals. You must not deface or destroy others’ property, like an out-of-control two-year-old, having a temper tantrum, hating to hear the word, ‘No.” If you do, your parents should punish you. Respect for others is very important. You must learn to behave maturely, like an ADULT– and rationally discuss something you may disagree with, in a mature, adult-like, courteous nanner.
My parents are dead. And you don’t get to decide what is a mortal sin, thank God!
And no I’m not a vandal, and I’m not OK with vandalism. Are you mad? People (especially people about to run for President) speak at the Reagan library to make people think they are like Reagan. You don’t see him speaking at the Kennedy library or the Clinton library, now, do you?
Huh? Republican contenders speak at the libraries of Republican presidents. Democrats do so at the libraries of Democrat presidents?
Joe, Kamala and Pete(r) did not speak at the Reagan Library and Pence and Haley won’t be speaking at The Carter Center.
And, no, I’m not mad. Why do you ask? I simply asked a couple questions. I’m relieved you oppose vandalism. But, who said DeSantis is another Reagan (besides you)?
Gov. DeSantis is certainly NOT an “insensitive homophobe.” And ILLEGAL immigrants have broken the law– and should be deported! Period! Gov. DeSantis is a very mature, concerned, responsible lawmaker, seeking to protect children from dangerous, extremely sinful LGBT sex and gender indoctrination, by now-immoral, filthy, corrupt Disney, and by immoral, corrupt, filthy educators, who all should be prosecuted for their evils and crimes — very serious Mortal Sins! There needs to be stronger laws against exposing children to pornographic books and materials, including pornographic LGBT books and materials.
Gov. DeSantis is heroic in standing up for protection of children against these horrible, filthy, Satanic evils and crimes– very serious Mortal Sins!
“People (especially those sbout to run for President) speak at the Reagan Library to make people think they are like Reagan.” No, that is not true. The Presidential Libraries have special events, and lecture series, with guest speakers, all the time. Gov. Ron DeSantis currently is speaking in several places about his new book, and is also signing copies of his new book. He was invited to lecture at the Reagan Library about his excellent new book, very important in Anerican current affairs. Why don’t you listen to DeSantis’ outstanding lecture and read his excellent new book?
I read a tragic news story today, in the “National Catholic Register,” in which abortion activists in Minneapolis, on March 3rd, took hammers and smashed the windows of a pro life pregnancy clinic that gives free diapers to mothers-in-need. Next, the thugs spray-painted filthy, violent graffiti everywhere. These sickening thugs should be sent to jail and prosecuted, ASAP!
