The following appeared in a July 31 edition of Roll Call
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was confronted on the floor this evening by Republican Reps. Mary Bono Mack (Calif.) and Robert Dold (Ill.), who were livid he had scheduled a tough abortion vote, according to someone who witnessed the incident.
Both voted against the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would have criminalized abortions in Washington, D.C., past 20 weeks of pregnancy.
“Are you kidding me? How many times are we going to vote on this?” Bono Mack told Cantor in the heated exchange, according to the witness.
The bill comes on the heels of a May vote on the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, which would have criminalized abortions on the basis of sex, gender or race.
[Bono Mack, who represents the Palm Springs area, voted against this pro-life bill in May.]
The confrontation shows the frustration moderate Republicans have felt in taking politically risky show votes so close to the elections.
Bono Mack, Dold, and Cantor could be seen having an animated conversation in the middle of the House floor for about 10 minutes.
When asked later why she confronted Cantor about the bill, Bono Mack said only that the conversation was about “politics.”
“My conversation was with the leader and it’s a private conversation,” she added.
Bono Mack, a seven-term lawmaker, routinely votes against measures limiting abortion outright, but she has voted in favor of banning federal money from being used to fund the procedure….
Four other GOP Members voted against the bill while two other Republicans voted “present.” Seventeen Democrats voted in favor.
Still, the measure had wide support in the Republican Conference, with 222 co-sponsors. Only 220 Members voted for it, however, while 154 voted “no,” 55 did not vote and 2 voted “present.”
Both this bill and the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act failed because they were brought up under suspension of the rules, which requires a two-thirds majority to pass.
Driving home the difficulty of voting against the issue, the National Right to Life Committee released a statement immediately after the vote stating that, “154 House members will have to explain to their constituents why they voted to endorse a policy of legal abortion for any reason, until the moment of birth, in their nation’s capital.”
Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), the primary sponsor both bills, conceded that the votes could cost some Republican lawmakers their jobs, and he said he sympathizes with Republicans who have to take tough votes. But he said the vote is a net benefit because it would cost more Democrats in November.
“It will cost some people the election, but it will cost more Democrats the election than it will Republicans,” he said. “I’m convinced that in very few districts in America will someone lose because they voted to protect a pain-capable baby from torture. And if that’s the case, maybe they need a different district anyways.”

That is what we get when people vote into office wives or husbands of politicians just because they married a deceased politician!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Marrying a deceased politician should be illegal.
if you marry a deceased politician, it should not only be illegal, but perhaps you should also move in with them…
When i have telephoned a California legislator to urge them to vote for or against a piece of legislation, they usually ask for my city and zip code. It seems they want to know if I could vote for or against them in the next election. If possible, I try to find a legislator’s email address to contact him/her so that they can’t ask if I am in their district and they might be more likely to listen to my request.
Mary Bono said, “My conversation was with the leader and it’s a private conversation.” No Mary, it wasn’t a private conversation. God is the silent listener to every conversation. You are choosing to ski down a spiritually deadly slope.
The snide reference to the death of her husband was tacky beyond belief.
k, Once again, you give yourself away. This is a very serious subject and you used this forum to crack a Groucho Marx joke in response to Ken Fisher’s post.
No mention of unborn babies and their capability of feeling pain or being murdered. No mention of Mary Bono’s soul being in serious jeopardy, just time for k to crack a joke to Ken and correct those who are warning this woman that unless she stops and repents, she IS on the way to hell. Yes k, it is definitely better for Mary Bono to re-reflect on the fact that “we know not the hour” than to reflect on your joke.
Abortion is a serious subject. We should not jeopardize the lives of the unborn with turning people off pro-life issues with cruelty and personal attacks on politicians. We can’t judge the state of anyone’s soul. We can say that an action was immoral.
k, You were caught joking and now your worried about turning people off? Now you write, “We should not jeopardize the lives of the unborn with turning people off pro-life issues.” Where is your faith k?
1. False charity for politicians who work tirelessly to have babies murdered, is what has jeopardized the lives of the unborn.
2. False charity neglects the enforcement of Canon 915.
3. False charity invites a pro-abortion President who is methodically removing our religious rights to dine in the Temple.
4. Wake up and smell the rotten stench of the fruits of false compassion.
Catherine, you are undoubtedly a pro-life warrior and zealous for God’s justice.
So now we have the protege of the despicable hypocrite, Pelosi!
I am represented by Mary Bono Mack. I have notified her that as a
Republican I will no longer vote for her reelection.
Beautiful on the outside, ugly on the inside. All such women as this think about is themselves. It is good to try to be as attactive as one cans, but attractiveness should not be made into a god to worship. Yep! Keep it up pro-abortion ladies and gents, and I would not want to be in your shoes when you have to explain to the One Judge from whom you cannot run or make excuses. All the while women such as Tonya Reeves and her baby dies, and these people, including President Obama, do not give a damn. What absolutely warped minds.
MARY BONO MACK should be concerned about what is right and what is wrong, not about merely keeping her job.
This is the problem with too many politicians. We need TERM LIMITS to stop her type of behavior.
Her husband CONNIE MACK is running for the Florida Senate Seat, and he is such a coward that he didn’t vote at all. He skips several key votes regarding abortion.
He also refused to participate in the FL Conf Bishops questionaire.
Killing babies must not be very important to either of these Republicans.
Always, always check the VOTING RECORD of all incumbents. There are a few good Democrats and a few bad Republicans – study your ballot and know how you are going to vote prior to going to the polls.
Though I am not in her district, I have recently received 2 fund raising letters from Bono Mack. Both of them have been 4 pages touting her opposition to Obamacare. Obviously she wants to change the subject!
I returned the first one with a strong “NO”, citing her pro-abortion vote on the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act. Now I will return the 2nd appeal with another “NO”, and cite this recent pro-abortion vote.
Sending your message by FAX avoids being screened out when you don’t reside in the legislator’s district.
I agree with Ken. Spouses of deceased legislators should be outlawed from running as replacements. The spouse always wins with a sympathy vote.
What is the matter with those people in Palm Springs?
Do they have sun stroke???
I want to know that Bono will not stand for life, but when it comes down to it the only people who really care about what a politician’s stand on abortion is are pro life Catholics. That is why democrat and republican candidates continue to get the votes of many Catholics. Most do not really care.
good grief — even the name MARY BONO MACK is quite bizarre.
sounds like one of those wily finance groups that went under.
freddie mac. or fannie mae. or whategver.
her name fits well with her behavior.
