Acclaimed actor and activist Martin Sheen has been tapped to give Santa Clara University’s 168th undergraduate commencement address at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at SCU’s Buck Shaw Stadium.
Sheen, affectionately known as ‘The President,’ is best known for playing President Josiah Bartlett on the television show The West Wing (1999–2006), for which he won a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards. The actor also won an Emmy for guest starring in the sitcom Murphy Brown.
Sheen’s portrayal of Capt. Willard in the movie Apocalypse Now earned him a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. He has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 1989.
“Martin Sheen embodies our Catholic, Jesuit mission to serve the world,” said Santa Clara University President Michael E. Engh, S.J. “His life-long work and passionate commitment to faith and justice reflect well the values of Santa Clara University.”

Do those scantily clad coeds roaming the campus in the summertime reflect the values of the Santa Clara University?
Sadly, Santa Clara University became a very immoral and heretical Jesuit school, after Vatican II.
Long ago I met Martin Sheen when he came to our youth group at Blessed Sacrament Church in the late 80s. That he would come and be with our youth was remarkable to me and I am forever grateful to him for that. That said, what I have heard from or about him since indicates he and Santa Clara University are a perfect match.
Charlie Sheen wasnt available?
“Embodies our Catholic, Jesuit mission to serve the world”
Jesuit and Catholic in the same sentence? Not so much.
Never send my children or grandchildren to this institution. Never.
Ideology has infected the Jesuits. They align with the political left, which arose from the anti-war, and civil rights movements, and are now involved in the anti-American, feminist, and sexual confusion movements.
Why not invite Mark Wahlberg or Newt Gingrich or Anne Colter, all Catholics?
We simply have to realize that the Church has leftist sympathizers in the clergy and in our Catholic universities.
Martin Sheen’s “strong pro-life” views did not stop him from backing Obama, the champion of partial birth abortion! Yet another Catholic who might talk the talk but will not walk the walk.
I watched Martin Sheen walk proudly in the Communist inspired and orchestrated May 1st Parade in Los Angeles as clenched fists and gay flags were lifted.
I asked him if there was anything about the parade that embarrassed him, and he said, “Yeah, Cardinal Mahony is leading the parade and I stay away from him.” So, we must give Martin Sheen some credit here!
WEll, I’m glad I had a grandson who graduated two years ago instead of now, from Santa Clara. Sheen played =the role of a president in a made for tv program. wowwie. Did he also sleep in a motel 6?
Very much impressed by the Catholic Christian charity extended to Martin Sheen by many of the posters on this article! Think about it…this poor man has had to watch his obviously disturbed son make a mockery of his beliefs and the only thing Mr Sheen can do is pray. I’ve walked on this path myself…it is like purgatory in the present life instead of the afterlife.
Martin Sheen says he is totally pro-life– but respects a troubled, pregnant woman’s decision, if she chooses to abort her child. He needs prayers for a total conversion to pro-life!
Oh come on. This is definitely an improvement. Just a few years ago the speaker was notorious “Father” James Martin. Martin Sheen is not half as bad.
Well, sure, that’s why Dante portrayed seven levels of Hell.
