The following comes from a June 4 story on LifeSiteNews.com.
Already embroiled in controversy in recent months over issues related to abortion and contraception, Catholic Charities USA has courted new scandal with the announcement of the featured speaker at their 2013 annual gathering on September 15. In a May 17 press release Catholic Charities announced that Father Greg Boyle would keynote the event.
Father Boyle, a very popular figure for his work with the poor, is nonetheless a dissident priest who ridicules Catholic Church teaching on issues touching same-sex ‘marriage’ and women priests.
In an August 5, 2010 video interview with NonprofitNews Jesuit Father Boyle was asked about the overturning of the referendum to ban homosexual ‘marriage’ Proposition 8.
Father Boyle replied:
“These things are actually easier than people make them out to be it seems to me. I think it’s always important to kind of say, ‘how does God see sexual orientation.’ Does God feel like that same-sex marriage could happen? I don’t think anybody who has a connection to God and God’s understanding and depth of compassion who’s gonna say no. And this is contrary to the party line.”
Father Boyle returned to the question later in the interview, speaking of opposing same-sex ‘marriage’ as “demonizing people.” He said, “You cannot demonize people [whom] you know. It obliterates that forever. So, that’s important in all these issues, gay marriage, etc. All you need to know is the gay couple who have kids, and that obliterates forever anybody’s inclination to say this is wrong. “
Father Boyle also ridiculed the Catholic Church’s refusal to ordain women to the priesthood. “You know the Vatican just said that the ordination of women is a grave sin,” he said. “Have you ever met anybody who would agree with that, I mean my 85-year-old mother doesn’t…”

Although I never actually met him (unless you count passing by him once briefly on a hot Roman Wednesday afternoon), I can think of one fellow who didn’t think the Church had the right to ordain women. His name was Karol Józef Wojtyla and he wrote a letter on the subject called Ordinatio sacerdotalis back in 1994. You could look it up, Fr. Greg.
women have souls, men have souls, when a women receives the sacrament of confirmation it prints a mark on that soul for all eternity. i am 74 and believe women will some day be ordained. the little flower wanted to be a priest, i believe the lord wants to have women ordained. without women the catholic church would vanish from the earth
John Paul II says that the Church does not have the authority to ordain women.
Thomas, always find it interesting when someone appoints themselves Judge over that Church that Christ Jesus founded. Tell me, from where do you get the authority to judge the Church?
The Vatican did not say that ordaining women was a grave sin. They said it was an impossibility. When someone does “ordain” women, they are excommunicated. The women are not ordained but they think they are, which is gravely contrary to justice.
k,
They may “think” they are going to heaven as well, but that does not make it so!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Ordaining is an action, and whoever falsely effects this action is guilty of a grave and excommunicable sin.
Yes, you are correct. Even some that are not false are grave and excommunicable sins. If a man is ordained without permission, he is ordained but his ordination was illegal, so it is gravely sinful. If a woman is “ordained” without permission, she is NOT ordained and the ‘ordination” is gravely sinful. Both are excommunicable offense. A man does become a priest; a woman does not. Holy orders is not given to women. The Church cannot ordain women.
Father Boyle is being asked to be the keynote speaker of the Catholic Charities conference in San Francisco because he of his success with gang intervention. I hope he does not talk this anti-Catholic crud there. I know someone who is going to that (they not a Catholic Charities employee, they was invited by someone) and they believe this kind of stuff anyway. (The Church teaches against X…but God does not agree with the Church.) (If you haven’t yet, click the link and watch the video-unless you have a heart problem.) I think I will try contacting AbC and Catholic Charities because if they hear stuff like this coming from a priest, this person will never realize the Truth. “When you write, be polite. ” I’ve got to remember that.
Defrock him and be done with it
Canisius, you are making a LOT of sense. As a Jesuit, he vowed obedience, not rebellion. Perhaps he should end up an Episcopalian priest where his views would be in agreement with their approach. He certainly should not be a priest in the Roman Catholic Church if he refuses the obedience he vowed years ago.
I don’t understand how this priest can say he is a Catholic, given his rejection of what the Church teaches. He might find the Episcopal Church a better fit.
This priest is a disgrace. His speaking style reminds me of a drug-addled hippie from back in the swinging sixties. This guy is clearly a schismatic. How does Catholic Charities get chummy with this man? Then again, there is not much “Catholic” left in that outfit, either. I have been tossing their envelopes into the shredder as soon as get them. They are getting enough money from Obama.
“schismatic”…comes from the greek, which means to split…like in “schizo-phrenia”…a splitting of reality/personality…I agree, he’s a schismatic, maybe worse!
Anton,
Let us pray and contact Archbishop Cordileone on this and insist that he cancel this in your face invitation and that he clean the house of Sad Francisco’s so called charities!
Up until now, we have not featured Boyle on our flyers at now Gomez’s annual dissent fest the REC because we really did not have enough on him.
Thank you CCC for giving us the ammo we needed. He will now be featured on our flyers that we pass out at the REC. I have already passed on this information to our professional writer who writes our annual flyer.
Our only problem is that we don’t have enough space to include them all at once, so we have to select which heretics we include next.
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
“All you need to know is the gay couple who have kids, and that obliterates forever anybody’s inclination to say this is wrong.”
Well, that’s exactly backwards isn’t it! A gay couple with kids. Um, where did they get them?
Homosexuals purposely creating children outside the bonds of marriage is child abuse.
Dear Ron VW: many many times, the children being parented by same sex couples were adopted from opposite sex couples who were unable to raise them. Child abuse is not an issue here, sorry. Child compassion IS the issue in this instance.
Seek first the Kingdom of God … According to Jesus, the Boyle’s of this world, flesh and devil have naught to do with the Gospel, for they seek the Kingdom of God after all else … which means they do not seek God at all.
YFC:
If you haven’t already seen it, I suggest you do a google news search for “Australian Study of Homosexual Parents.” Maybe you’ve already seen it. It’s abbreviated ACHESS. You deserve to be informed of the truth!
And while you’re at it, YFC, also google up other movements that take poor boys and feed them and teach them how to gain their own material benefits … such as the naked cannibal warriors in North Africa.
They should have been put in a two parent heterosexual home. Period. Or in a children’s home with both good men and women to watch over them. In some states heterosexual couples are not allowed to adopt if they do not agree with homosexual adoptions. What a travesty of justice, to the heterosexual couple and the child.
Anne, I’m pretty sure there is no litmus test anywhere for potential heterosexual adoptive parents to believe in homosexual adoption. That just doesn’t even make sense.
Besides when you “put” the child in a heterosexual home – you forget that there aren’t enough of them wiling to take these kids and that is a tragedy. You also forget that many of these gay parents are raising their own biological children, so I don’t think it is up to you to say where they should be “put”.
Wrong, Your Fellow, wrong.
OK, Anne, if I’m wrong, please tell me where straight adoptive parents have to believe in adoptions by gays. If this is the case I’d really like to know where.
For one thing, Your Fellow and others, there is a horrendous bill out that would forbid adoption agencies to prioritize heterosexual couples. It is on Life Site News. You can all just put in “Federal bill would penalize adoption agencies that prioritize heterosexual couples” in your search engine. I cannot find right now the cases where heterosexuals have been refused because they thought homosexual adoptions were wrong right, but they have been some because I have been sent the interviews with the couples by pro traditional family groups. The adoption agencies actually asked these heterosexual couples about the issue, when it is none of their business what the heterosexual couples think about homosexual adoptions. Women who want to adopt their children need to clarify that they would a heterosexual family. That is if this horrible government we have now have does not try to take that option away from even them, like they have the rights of parents to know if their under aged daughters are going to have an abortion.
Please excuse all my typos in my post above as it is late, and I did not have time to be too careful.
Well, anne, let me know when you find it, ok!
Look it up yourself, Your Fellow. I just gave you evidence of what is going on. That is all I need to do. But of course you will not.
Children that are raised in homes with same sex parental units grow up with conduct disorder that blooms into sociopathy in adulthood…fact
YFC – Teaching children “RELATIVISM” by word or example is child abuse.
Children must be taught right from wrong by word and by example.
Living in the State of Mortal Sin is definitely bad example.
Homosexuals who want to adopt other people’s children are trying to teach innocent children that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable way to live.
Parents (natural or adoptive) must teach their children that it is a MORTAL SIN to have sex outside of marriage – which is only between one man and one woman.
And that dying in the state of Mortal Sin sends one directly to HELL.
A normal child will then think – do my homosexual parents want to go to Hell, and if not why are they behaving this way.
There is no end to the list of heterosexual married couples who are waiting to adopt a child – of any age or ability. The fact that something less than the ideal is advocated and promoted by society is a disservice to those children who need parents – a mom and a dad. No one is saying that homosexuals can’t be good parents. If they father or bear children, they should be parents to their children. But to hand over a child to same sex couples as if there is no other choice (or that the homosexual is the better or best choice) flies in the face of common sense, nature, and Church teaching. I am pretty sure Jesus would not have approved of this either. This is not a Solomonic decision. Do what is best for a child. Not what is best for the selfish desires of those who persist in sinful living.
The gay agenda also moves against marriage, which in turn breaks up families and tears tots from good tutelage.
Please provide a single example, dear Skai, of a marriage that has been broken up a marriage, a family, or torn a tot from tutelage. Even a single example suffices.
Interesting that you would post this here on CCD. I’ve never heard of this priest. Now I am educated about him. Thanks CCD, for spreading his beliefs far and wide!
As I said in my earlier post, I had never heard of this priest. I’ve since educated myself further about him. He founded the largest gang intervention program in the country. He has buried over 140 young gang members. He has given hope to thousands. I urge CCD readers to find the Terry Gross Fresh Air interview with him. or other interviews with him, besides the very narrow video posted as part of CCD.
I have to say I’m pretty incensed that CCD would do a hit piece on this saintly man.
YFC can always be counted on defend the dissenters within the Church while he attempts to pull at our heart strings…..of the 140 gangs members he buried YFC how many of their souls did he attempt to save from judgment that they faced? Or was he more concerned with their earthly lives….
I know what you mean, Canisius. I used to donate occasionally to a place that took teens off the streets until the priest running it was arrested and convicted of molestation. Later I contributed to one ran by a priest I trusted who was very pro life, orthodox and refused to accept dirty money from the government. This priest mentioned here has two many red flags showing for my comfort. The very fact that he thinks marriage between two men is all right is a serious red flag.
why did the Jesuits ask him to take a one year retreat away from this gang intervention group??
good point Walt…they probably saw this man teetering on the brink of apostasy…
YFC, does this priest have views on homosexual marriage contrary to Catholic teaching? If so, do you agree with him and his view on homosexual marriage?
The gangs are operating in full force. Where is the result of the intervention?
YFC, the drug cartels have buried even more boys and given hope in the form of money to even many many more than Boyle, and this would be in an expanding international sense.
Apparently, Fr. Greg Boyle hasn’t read the Bible or he would know how God feels about same-sex relationships. Does Fr. Boyle know what happened to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah? Why does this heretic continue to call himself a priest, or doesn’t have any other way to earn a living? Why did Catholic Charities invite him to be the keynote speaker? Who authorized the invitation? And why hasn’t Bishop Gomez disciplined Boyle?
Or perhaps God speaks to him directly through the holy spirit?
And, peter, you’re the one to tell us all if it is so, right?
Why do some people here think that their interpretation of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is more important than the words of Jesus in the 4 gospels?
The Lord Jesus mentioned how evil Sodom was in many places in the New Testament, Mark PA, so he must have agreed with the destruction of Sodom. Think before you write, or try really reading the Bible.
Good for Father Gregory Boyle, keep up the good works!
My husband and I actually know Father Greg Boyle, and his life story will make a great movie someday, along the lines of the Boys Town movie but of course more focused on today’s “troubled children” of poverty and the inner city. He may be a priest who disagrees with the teaching of the Church, but he certainly is a good man, and that’s an understatement. We can disagree with what he says on certain issues and hold “Catholic” organizations to higher standards in providing “keynote speaker” opportunities to Catholics whose public utterances are at odds with Catholic teachings, but to denounce a good man personally who is a saint compared to most of us is to prove that this priest, and his life’s work, is almost certainly unknown to the person judging him. His life’s work is phenomenal and speaks for itself, but being in his presence and talking with him, or merely observing him serving his community, would serve as a superb example of why we should debate concepts, ideas, values, philosophies, etc., but not decry as evil or wicked a good human being who is in error on some topics as a result of having one of the biggest hearts of anyone I’ve ever met. It is hard to find anyone whose life is more saintly. He truly is a possible candidate for sainthood someday, and as a fellow cancer survivor, who kept on serving all through his illness, he has my respect as a human being. He is admittedly out of step with Church teachings, I will grant you, but his years of incredible service far outweigh any missteps he takes in his public pronouncements as a priest. Even if you mark him down for that, his life is the Southern California version of service to the untouchables in Calcutta – honestly. And I am a conservative. Cast your aspersions on his pronouncements if you will, but do not cast stones at the man. There is a difference, you know. You’ll see this servant of God in heaven if you make it, betcha anything.
You are like so many confused Catholic’s maryanne, you are willing to pin a medal on this guy for encouraging social deviant’s to stop victimizing people, I’ve been doing it for years, I don’t ask for strokes or expect any!…this man is heretic and a flaming modernist!…I’ve known atheist’s who help their fellow man…so what?…his temporal works are “filthy rags”, if he loses his faith and endorses modernism, and the gay agenda!…Think, Think Maryanne!
“He is admittedly out of step with Church teachings, I will grant you, but his years of incredible service far outweigh any missteps he takes in his public pronouncements as a priest.” Gee, Maryanne, I hate to write this—your blogs are almost always most reasonable—but are you serious? He is a member of the Society of Jesus (and they’re great), and as such took a vow to be especially obedient to the Pope—one of whom (JP II) precluded the ordination of women to the priesthood in words that sound awfully like infallible teaching, and others (B16 and F1) who have spoken out most forcefully against the redefinition of marriage. Certainly I don’t want to demonize a man who has done so much good. But we can’t “canonize” him either, as you seem to do. There’s no getting around the fact that he’s a priest as well as a man, and we Catholics believe you can’t separate the two: it’s not like taking off a coat. I’m afraid that if we scratch the surface a little deeper, we’d find a certain unwarranted pride—unwelcome in a Jesuit—in priests who think they know Christ’s will better than the Church He founded and who thereby confuse the faithful rather than evangelizing them.
“(B16 and F1)”: Good thing it’s not B1 and F16, unless they’d be bombing and strafing the devil.
Maryanne:
I enjoyed reading your comment very much, especially because you conveyed your personal thoughts as well your direct experience with Fr. Boyle.
Comments grounded in reality are refreshing and welcome.
This priest is NO St. John Bosco. Obviously he has done a tremendous amount of good for former gang members, both young men and young women. Having toured his facilities in L.A. recently, enjoying a most delicious lunch served by the young ladies, and purchasing some of the baked goods that are made by the young men, I was more than disappointed to learn that he is a dissenting priest. No matter how much good he does, he is a scandal to anyone familiar with and practicing the Faith seriously. Jesus Christ is either the center of our lives, or He’s not. To make Him the center we must believe and follow His teachings given to the Apostles and handed down over nearly 2 millennia through the Catholic Church. Unfortunately the Jesuits have fallen off the rails, and Fr. Boyle in particular. It is time for our holy Jesuit Pope Francis to do what he can to put the Order of St. Ignatius back on track. Ironically Fr. Boyle’s Home Boys organization has very very strict rules. If a young person does not agree with them and follow them to the letter, he is OUT! Thousands of former gang members have benefited from this group over the past 25 years. And it would not have succeeded if dissenters had had their way.
Institutionalized gangsters are just fine, Anniem. It’s when they’re on the loose that is the problem.
I happen to have known Fr Boyle for a number of years, and as a matter of fact, also his saintly now-deceased uncle, the late Fr. John (“Jack”) Boyle, an eminent scripture scholar and theology professor. Although Fr. Greg Boyle is personally a very charming and engaging person of great personal charisma and sincerity, the real issue isn’t him personally: it is his clear and obdurate espousal of views that are diametrically opposite to “Those who hold and teach the Catholic Faith” (as mentioned explicitly in Ad Tuendam Fidem, the 1998 pronouncement that once-and-for-all defined one must hold defined doctrine, and the 2008 Vatican declaration declaring null women’s ordination. Now, how long can a house divided stand? How much longer and the Church’s voice have two tongues, each a contradiction to the other? Fr. Greg Boyle unfortunately appears to have fallen in the group-think of the California Jesuits (excepting some, most notably now-Bishop Michael Barber, SJ) of holding to popular and quite heretical causes. Remember, Arius was very engaging and charismatic and arguably the most popular teacher of his time in the ancient world. But I wouldn’t defend Fr. G. Boyle (as does Maryanne Leonard and perhaps some others) on the basis of his “good-heartedness”, and I am very chary of even pronouncing him a “saint”—-rather an amazing leap. Instead, there is a serious problem here of his elevating his personal mind and judgment over that of the defined Faith,a serious pride issue, something you can’t overlook. And this is not the last you will have heard of him as now the Leftist-Atheist agitprops will push him to be louder and more vocal and more destructive, now that he has made such a clamor over these matters.
Maryanne, thank you so much for your testimony. Father Greg Boyle sounds like a wonderful man. Hopefully he has brought the faith to many and helped many to stay away from a violent way of life. It sounds like he has truly been a “Father” to many.
PA your comments make me physically ill
Canisius, what should make you ill is that many lives are lost to gang violence. Read what Your Fellow Catholic wrote about Father Boyle. This man is a father figure to many of those men who never had fathers or who have disinterested fathers. I will bet that most gang members are sons of single moms and don’t really have dads. Hopefully he is a positive role model to these young men and can lead many to removing the violence from their lives and following Christ. Father Boyle is bringing Christ to others and God bless him for that.
Here is the thing, Mark. We are all sinners and we are all invited to be saints. A person can be an image of Christ in one area of their life and utterly blow it in another. It is important that Father Boyle not teach that the Church says one thing on morality but God does not agree with the Church and it is not just alright not to believe the Church, but preferential. Many people are vulnerable to that error-that the Church does not accurately reflect God’s Will. Remember, what they declare bound on earth is declared bound in heaven. There is no reason to doubt.
PA for the very last time, do not try and school me I have no interest in learning from you, since you promote heresy and a weak, feckless brand of Catholicism..not the kind that produce legions of saints and martyrs for 2000 years…Violence is a part of life, deal with it.
Well, Canisius, violence isn’t part of my life. I think Father Boyle is trying to teach some men that violence doesn’t have to be a part of their lives either. Throughout history the Church has sometimes looked the other way when people have been victims of violence. That has been sinful.
The wrong teachings, such as Mr. Boyle’s, over time has brought about the destruction of the family – particularly Catholic families. Gang lifestyles are one of the results of such destruction. Therefore, strengthening and affirming the religious based nuclear family is the solution to the gang problem. However, Mr. Boyle perpetuates the destruction of the solution (family) while infecting those he is supposedly helping by encouraging them to enter more deeply into deviancy from the faith that, if used, will eventually restore them – and society – to peaceful, harmonious, natural, normalcy. Celebrating the deviant does not create peace. It only breeds more violence. As such, Mr. Boyle breeds the violence he craves… or is it that he craves the praise heaped on him for his ‘work’ with his creations – I’m sure he is very ‘Proud’ of himself when those like Maryanne laud him a hero!
PA, it is not that Boyle “has brought the faith” but that he has bought the farm.
Maryanne, Fr. Boyle has reportedly said ” “You know the Vatican just said that the ordination of women is a grave sin. Have you ever met anybody who would agree with that, I mean my 85-year-old mother doesn’t…”.
Based on your comments, I am assuming that you do agree with the Vatican’s statement. Then, apparently Fr. Boyle would be shocked to find out that he actually has met someone who does agree with the Vatican on the issue of woman’s ordination. Actually, I know for sure that he has met at least two people who agree with the Vatican. That would be none other than me and a good friend of mine who met with him in his office at Home Boy Industries. I wonder if he would have helped us out if he knew where we stood?
Mary Ann Leonard, I do not know this priest or much about him, so I will not comment on him personally, but I do know what the Lord Jesus said in Matthew 7:21. “It is not anyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ who will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but the person who DOES the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, drive out demons in you name, work miracles in your name? Then I will tell them to their faces. I have never known you; away from me all evil doers.’ Mary Ann things are not always as they seem. If a priest teaches contrary to the teachings of Christ’s Church or Christ himself, will his other “good works” save him?????
I just read the whole thing, and if this priest has said all this, he is a real mess.
Mary Ann, you may NOT disagree with anything in the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”.
Neither may any Bishop, Priest, Nun, or other Laity.
It is heretical and schismatic to say that you can.
Please retract and correct your statement, since you are giving fodder to those who hate the teachings of the Church.
Same-sex marriage -sodomy, (as well as abortion, and contraception), are mortal sins that may never be approved.
The Priest in this article is also guilty of the Mortal Sins of SCANDAL, and of SACRILEGE when he receives the Body and Blood of our Lord.
Since you know him, help to save his Soul – do not help send him to Hell by approving of his sins which include SCANDAL.
CCC: ” 1868 Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
– by participating directly and voluntarily in them;
– by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
– by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
– by protecting evil-doers. ”
CCC: ” 1577 Only a baptized man (vir) validly receives sacred ordination.
The Lord Jesus chose men (viri) to form the college of the twelve apostles,
and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.
The college of bishops, with whom the priests are united in the priesthood, makes the college of the twelve an ever-present and ever-active reality until Christ’s return.
The Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself.
For this reason the ordination of women is not possible. ”

You have to be very cautious of evil that uses charity to cover its real intentions.
There is a difference between Charitable works that come through union with the Cross and Jesus Christ, and good works motivated by a need to gain credibility to further ones own social goals that are contrary to God’s will.
True Christianity is that which embraces everything that the Catholic Church teaches. Even that which one does not necesarily understand.
All Christians who do not ‘agree’ with the Catholic Church, get there by dismissing the wisdom of the Church and replacing it with human wisdom. Ultimately that leads to suffering. For where the Catholic Church is, there is Christ.
Yes, but Mother Teresa remained faithful to Church teaching. Fr. Greg is creating scandal not debate.
It always troubles me when I see a priest or nun doing this kind of good work and at the same time speaking so scandalously against what the church teaches. If the church’s teaching is so wrong why do they stay? People such as Father Boyle do a disservice to all the faithful priests and religious who came before him and did this work with humility and obedience to Christ’s church. He is doing good work with gangs, if he also evangelized them as to the truth of the Catholic church, he would be saving their lives and their souls. Its not an “either/ or ” its “both/and”.
This priest is a modernist and heretic…he should join the episcopalian’s…they get most of our cast-off’s…another post Vatican II nightmare.
Boyle’s brain is gone. Probably from sodomy, drugs, irreverance and plain stupidity.
LOL!…LOL!
Skai it’s time for you to reread the admonition below about striving to be civil. While your at it, pick up the Catechism. But if you are short for time, just go straight to the eighth commandment.
I am being civil, YFC. I’m prying your ears open.
How’s the beer and popcorn Skai?
Skai, did your mother ever teach you that if you can’t say anything nice about someone, don’t say anything at all? You probably don’t even know Father Boyle and yet you make an ignorant comment like the one in your post of 6/7, 8:22 AM. You should be ashamed to lie like that.
PA my mother would kick me across the kitchen floor, this so called Priest deserves the same…there was NOTHING ignorant about Skai’s comments…
A Jesuit priest has no excuse of ignorance, PA, none whatsoever. When they harp against God, then they need to be awakened before they head for the Judgment. And, no, my mother did not teach me that, PA. But my father tried, but then eventually I think he came to realize that being nice was not a virtue. Mice are nice in the cat’s opinion … and you are stalking like a cat, PA.
Skai, I never said that Father Boyle was ignorant. I said your accusations against him were.
Well said Skai. did you hear him PA BEING NICE IS NOT A VIRTUE…..
Kindness is.
Very big difference Anon
Yes it is.
Well, Canisius, I guess I got being nice from my mom. She was a very nice person. She was soft spoken and never had a bad word to say about anyone. I am thankful that I had such a great mom and that she passed down some of her good qualities to me.
Well, Mark PA, Canisius did not have the same wonderful opportunity to have nice parents as you did. His mother’s lesbian lover used to beat him, and his father committed suicide, probably over the breakup of his marriage. Think about that, but of course you could never understand that and probably never will.
Mark from PA, I’m sure your mother was a wonderful person and I am sure that it was a blessing to you that she was nice as well. That being said, am I to deduce from your various comments that you believe “niceness” = “virtuousness”. If this is what you believe, then I would encourage you to please rethink this position. Wouldn’t you imagine that most con-artist are the “nicest” people you will ever meet? Don’t they use “niceness” as a means of gaining their victim’s trust? And wouldn’t you say that even though most effective sales persons are likely very “nice”, that this doesn’t necessarily ensure that they have their customer’s best interest at heart? And how many times have we all heard neighbors or coworkers of notorious murderers speak to the news media telling the reporter how “he seemed like a really nice guy!” or “He didn’t bother anyone!” ? Or what about comments coming from parishioners about a former child molester priest who say that he was a really nice and popular priest? On the other hand, isn’t it true that often times someone who speaks the uncomfortable truth is thought of as being “not very nice”? Come to think of it, the Pharisees probably didn’t think that Jesus was a “very nice” person. In fact they called Him a blasphemer. Certainly no one considered to be a “blasphemer” in Jesus’ time would have also been considered to have been a “nice” person! So in my opinion, while “niceness” is a very poor predictor of “virtuousness”, it sure can be seductive.
Anne T, I know and I do understand, it is tragic. Sorry if my mention of my mom here made you angry. You don’t have to be insulting.
Tracy, I was psychologically, emotionally and verbally abused for over 2 decades by the “nicest person in the world.” Others were too, even children. But her “golden circle” was so tight that nothing could be done. The priest at her funeral said that she was a gentle woman-then he quickly added “At least, she was always a gentle woman when I was with her.”
Tracy,
God bless you! That was such an excellent post!
I am sure that many people do not realize the origin of the word nice.
Wiki Answers on Literature and Language
– What is the origin of the word Nice?
Answer: The word “Nice” comes to English from Latin, by way of Old French and Middle English…
“Although it now means pleasant, agreeable, satisfactory, good natured, or kind, not too long ago, it meant ‘fastidious’. Before that, it referred to qualities of coyness or reservedness in a negative way… essentially ‘stupid’. ”
“The Latin root word is nescius, which means ‘ignorant’, coming from nescire, ‘not know’.”
That’s nice to know, Catherine.
Another charitable organization which I will no longer support financially.
My guess is that Boyle was accepted like a gang punk is accepted. Gangs continue; so what is all the hooplah? Answer: total hype.
Bingo. And he probably was too naive or vain to sense it.
Yes, gangs continue. One person and a small organization cannot put an end to the thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of gang members in the LA area. If he can help turn around only a few each year, it will be worth all the efforts. Don’t expect perfection in everything when good is an acceptable result.
In all things charity, but charity in truth… Fr. Boyle has made great contributions. Still, his remarks re: SSM and parenting are simply fatuous. They surely are not in keeping with the mind of the Church. A clear and public statement of what the Church teaches, and why, would greatly benefit my students at Loyola Marymount. One problem from which public Jesuits seem to suffer is their lack of accountability.
On the question of who will be in heaven before us, should we someday be there ourselves…. The Servant of God Dorothy Day, to whom I owe a great personal debt, spoke a fair amount of nonsense about Castro’s Cuba. But it won’t be that for which, God willing, she will be canonized.
“Does God feel like that same-sex marriage could happen? I don’t think anybody who has a connection to God and God’s understanding and depth of compassion who’s gonna say no.”
If this were so, why didn’t God create homosexual marriage in the Beginning?
She was busy with other things.
YFC, that “she” was not God, as you claim, but your pimpess doing the devil’s bidding.
Skai please try to refrain from blasphemy.
It was your comments that were blasphemous YFC, God I how I hate liberals
YFC, you did not answer my question. Nor does Fr. Boyle’s position address why homosexual acts are forbidden in the New Testament.
If God is Mother, then creation is birhted and we will worship creation. A masculine Holy Spirit descended upon Mary, but if God is Mother then this open the way for homosexual marriage.
I believe I did answer your question Kavesi. And to Skai and Canisius: God is neither male nor female.
YFC, no you didn’t answer my question.
YFC God the Father… that would be male……
Canisius, please consult CCC 370: [God] is neither male nor female.
To clarify I was referring to YFC comment about God being a “She” and Skai’s answer. Skai’s answer is funny to a point but inappropriate on a serious website too often.
Anne T., no doubt some of my attempted humor is not so good on a serious site, but maybe it’ll open a few ears that reside in a world of absurdity.
Skai, that post was meant for the editor only, and was connected to another post I sent about YFC’s inappropriate humor also to the editor and your answer. The first post to the editor was left out. I probably confused the him/her, so I will take the blame for that. I did not mean for either of them to be posted.
Anne T., sometimes the editorial staff is overwhelmed by the volume of posts.
See, Skai, Anne was tattling on me to the editors.
YFC, she’s supposed to; she’s a woman. I’m glad you have recognized the difference. It’s a positive step in your transformation.
“Good works” and “honesty among thieves”: The critical point would not be “Seek first the Kingdom of God …”, would it?
Ordination comes from God through man. Despite the laying on of hands, God will not enter where He is not wanted or where ulterior motives are at play. Mr. Greg obviously had his fingers crossed behind his back when he was asked “Do you believe…?” and “Will you obey the teachings…?” He answered in the affirmative then… He was not being honest or truthful.
Mr. Greg lied to God, the demonic lies to God… God knows of their deceit, but we don’t… until they show us their true colors. Why is this man still allowed to call himself a priest???
“Does God feel like that same-sex marriage could happen? I don’t think anybody who has a connection to God and God’s understanding and depth of compassion who’s gonna say no. And this is contrary to the party line.”
A saint? Some people need to get a clue. What saint of the Church has ever stated anything like this? The gang problem is almost completely caused by the breakdown of the family in this nation. And now this Jesuit further attacks the domestic Church and Church Universal as well.
Well said, Father. Refreshing and penetrating points. Thank you.
Exactly. All the socialist do-gooders perpetually churn the symptoms of the problems they create in the first place, and then claim credit. They are front organizations for evil, to camouflage their true agenda. Boyle and his fellow ideologues break down families and claim credit for ‘helping’ the offspring while they simultaneously corrupt the same youth with the same philosophies that put the kids on the streets in the first place. This pattern is everywhere – another prominent example is the Susan Komen Foundation funding PP, so PP’s contraception and abortion crusade can perpetuate the same the national breast cancer epidemic which fuels donations and creates the need for a cure for breast cancer in the first place. Is it really that tough to see the diabolical inversion here? The Jesuits are the last ones who are going to do anything about this guy, after all, he’s a prototype for their behavioral model.
Fr. Michael, you “hit the nail right on the head”.
Another wacky vain priest from the 60s.
The real damage of Vietnam war is still being seen. It pushed people like this priest into the seminary. Hopefully our Pope will begin a house cleaning of the American Jesuits…too much time trimming beards and pontificating from armchair.
That’s it, in a nutshell Ed
https://www.guidestar.org/organizations/53-0196620/catholic-charities-usa.aspx
Go to the above website and register as a new member, it’s free. Look up CC 990, to get a feel of where the monies come from and where they go. The CC has long ago sold it soul to the Feds. They are using the Catholic name and acting as a Fed. Government agency.
In Virginia they get 3% from donations and 97% from Fed. programs they are working and making a profit…
Cotton
Catholic Charities is not a Federal Government Agency. There are federal, state and local grants that the government gives to charitable organizations to help their communities. Catholic Charities does not make a profit from them. It is a non-profit organization.
Catholic Charities is a de facto federal government agency because it is paid by the govt, Anonymous. Give to Caesar is what Jesus said, not take from Caesar.
Skai, again you are wrong. Catholic Charities is not on the government payroll. There are programs, grants, that the government provides to non-profit organization if they want to manage that effort. Almost all grants are won or loss on a competitive basis. Catholic Charities, or any other charity does not make a profit because it is not allowed. Everyone thought it was great when previous administrations started faith-based initiatives to run programs. Now that they are doing that, you falt them for it. What is important, and frankly harder to do now days is to apply for grants and awards that don’t require Catholic Charities to relinquish their beliefs. As a matter of fact, Catholic Charities doesn’t usually meet the government definition of a religious organization.
Profit, Anonymous?? Do you know what the top salaries are? Also, do you have anything rational between your ears?
Skai, do you know what the hours are? Do you know how many death threats they get, just because someone is ticked at the Church? Do you know how much stress it is to deal with government and church bureaucracy? Do you know how many times they have to disarm a mentally ill person? Do you know how often people try to rip them off? Do you know how much stress it is trying to pay salaries when contributions are low? Do you know how many of them work in crime-ridden areas? The salaries are modest. The worker is worth his wage. St. Paul said that. And every insult you dish out, says nothing about me and everything about you.
Annonymous, for your information non-profits can make a profit they just have to put those profits back into the organization. Also, while a non-profit does not have share holders, their executives and other workers can and do often make very high salary’s, yes in the 6 figure bracket. Just check out what kind of salary’s Planned Parenthood or American Red Cross’s executives make, just to name a couple. You can request the 990 form from any tax-exepmt non-profit organization if you don’t believe me.
I ust called and complained to Lori by message of this. Lori is the Archbishop’s Secretary.
I hope and pray that many of you will do likewise.
Here is the Archdiocese’s phone number: 1-(415) 614-5500
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Thank you, Maryanne Leonard, Fr. Boyle was a novice in the Society of Jesus with me 42 years ago, you are correct, he is a wonderful man and a very fine priest, a Jesuit of his times!! Thank for your balanced understanding, that has been lacking on this site! AMDG!!!
A Jesuits.. that figures…..
Real Jesuits do not push anti-Christ religious ideas, TEM. Are you really ignorant of what Jesus told the Devil, when the devil tossed Scripture at Him and then twisted it?
When I first learned of this earlier this week, the first thing that I thought of was Fr. Bruce Ritter who started the COVENANT HOUSE shelters in the urban east coast. My parents were very generous in supporting him financially, and CH would send us all those little books containing the dramatic, suspenseful stories of the clients. It broke all of our hearts when it was revealed that he was involved with some scandalous behavior regarding financial improprieties (and also charges of sex abuse, though these were never proven and vigorously denied by Fr. Bruce). True, he helped many people, but his legacy ended up being tainted.
Jay, I recall Ritter going down to the sex scandal. I don’t think it was inconclusive. I read everything I could find on it until it all disappeared. Sad to say.
Yup…he got busted for molestation…why do you think he was working with these young adults and adolescent’s?…this was a living, breathing laboratory for him to practice his “pederast experiments”…he was a sexual predator and Dr. Frankenstein rolled into one…a monster…
Corporeal works of mercy are good and the Catholic Church has done more than any other organization or entity in the history of humanity. However, the primary focus of the Church is to save souls. A persons life on this earth is short and more often than not full of suffering of one kind or another. On the other hand, our soul wil live on forever either in heaven or hell. Christ etablished the Church and sent us the Holy Spriit to lead us home to the Father. Anything that thwarts that goal is evil and must be avoided.
A Catholic priest who ridicules the teaching of the Catholic Church should NOT be invited to be a speaker, or to receive “honors,” from any real Catholic organization.
In the military, such a person would face a court martial.
Faithful Catholics have been taught to “trust” their priests, so having him proclaim his personal opinions — which are in opposition to the Magisterium — is a real disservice to those who will hear him or read his remarks.
I don’t think they knew about it when they invited him. Now it is getting to be an internet kerfuffle.
Why would priests harbor personal opinions that contradict Catholic doctrine? Wouldn’t they try to learn and then understand the doctrine and embrace it?
Because they are evil Skai…some are so steeped in maleficence…they become “perfectly possessed”…they are conduit’s of evil
With all due respect, the days of trusting your priest went out with the child molestation era. The bishops transfered priests from one parish to another and never reported them to the police. Parents no longer teach their children that pap.
Hmn, maybe there is something underneath Bob One’s bureaucratic cravat after all. Time will tell.
Enough already! In the name of God people on this site are driving other people from the church and those that are in it, out. How can so many people who call themselves Catholic be so mean and insensitive in their comments. I went to the internet to check out this priest that is the center of such vitriol. If he doesn’t represent the church’s emphasis on social justice, no one does. He has done marvelous work with gangs. He has taken that message to the rest of the country. I listened to many of his talks that are on you tube. He is a solid, down to earth speaker with no histrionics. He speaks about God all the time. He speaks about the work God is doing in the slums in which he works and among the gang members with whom he works. None of these are the work on an evil man as some would suggest. None of it! If one reads the cathecism, there are thousands of rules and admonitions. Try to find anyone who agrees with all of them. Many would kick him out of the church simply because he thinks it would be alright to ordain women at some time. Really? Other than the ten or fifteen faith police on this site, go into the streets and find the other seventeen people in the country that believe 100% of everything the church teaches. If we followed the mandate of some of the people on this site, 99% of catholics would be asked to leave the church along with 90% of the bishops and priests. Only the 1% would be left behind to stew in their satisfaction of chasing people away from God. Not everyone agrees with everything. Most people don’t even know what they are to believe in some cases. But they go to Mass on Sunday, if the haven’t been shunned by the faith police, do good works, bring up their kids as good Christian Catholics, and love most of mankind. Sounds like a pretty good start. Until you know more about this fine priest, it would be good to do some research to see what he is made of. People get mad at him because he isn’t opposed to gay people. Does that make him a bad person? If your son or daughter came to you and said they were gay, would you kick them out of the house, disown them and hope that they are sent to the fires of hell? No, you would continue to love them, their partners, if they had any, and your grandchildren if they had adopted any. Don’t tell me you would not have. Don”t tell me this priest, who has done so much to improve the lives of gang members in LA should go to hell either. Think before you call for someones head. Please!
This Priest may choose going to Hell, himself, regardless of anything else good or bad he may have done in the past.
He may not continue to support the act of sodomy which if unrepented – sends Souls to Hell.
Really, Bob One? You say, ” Not everyone agrees with everything. Most people don’t even know what they are to believe in some cases.” It’s soooo obvious that it is priests like this one who dissent from Church teaching why so many Catholics don’t know what to believe in and are totally confused. The Catholics are being told so many heretical things by bishops and priests like this that they have no concept of what the Church says on anything. The Catholics of today are being taught by dissenting priests like this one. Solid Catholic teaching is no longer a part of the Catholic Church. The state of the Church is very sad today and if the Truths of the Church were upheld, then we would have people flocking to the Church. They are not flocking to the Church because the Church of today is like any other Protestant church; anything goes and believe what you want. Get rid of the modernists like this priest, bring back Tradition, and the Church will flourish.
Good grief, man, if he is telling young boys and his congregation that it is all right for two men to “marry” and misuse their body parts, there is nothing “good” about that. I would not want him near any of my grandchildren. What a sick, sick society will now live in.
And that IS what these so-called “marriages” amount to — society giving its approval to preverted behavior.
Ah Bob One the ever upset liberal that loyal laity have it with false priests like the one in this article. “Social Justice” now there is a phrase I have had enough of, yes Bob One I have had it with your progressive crowd who think the Church is nothing more than a giant welfare agency to be controlled by do- gooders like you. The Church has 2 jobs the salvation of souls and the creation of saints. Faith Police, yes you are correct perhaps if there were more of us 45 years ago we would not be in the state we are in now. I am so sick of the “judge not lest thee be judge” attitude that your crowd repeats as mantra. You love priest like this character, but I know scores who are faithful to Christ and His Church but banished because of their love of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. There Bishops ( with the Bob One attitude) do all in there power to reduce the influence of thsee great men of God and promote the feckless church of nice priests. And to answer your question: If your son or daughter came to you and said they were gay, would you kick them out of the house, disown them … Yes I would I would tell them in no uncertain terms that unless they conform their lives to the will of Christ I will have NO PART of their lives, I would say the same to straight children who were living in sin. Bob One I will continue to stick my finger in the eye of the church of nice, I will call out and I will judge. I have what 40 years of indifference has done to the Church. If that mean so called lukewarm catholics leave the Church…so be it….
Sad!
Yes you are Bob One… very sad.
Bob One explain…or is it you just can’t accept the fact your crowd no longer controls the narrative anymore, the faithful laity are finally getting organized and taking on the Church of nice….
Canisius: I couldn’t agree more. Spot on! I love how you are in the faces of the modernists and their evil agenda! We need a lot more of you in the Church today. I loved it when you said that you will continue to stick your finger in the eye of the church of nice! If there was a like thumb button in your post I would give you one!
RR… modernist do not like to be challenged, but it is dawning on them that they are starting to lose control, partly IMO due to the internet. They can do longer get away with their garbage without it be called out. It will be a long fight, but if we are united by Faith and the Cause the modernist heretics will taste our STEEL and we will win… because Truth always prevails in the end….Thanks for the support, if people like Bob One were around during the Battle of Tours we would all be Muslim..
Exactly, Canisius! Thumbs up! People like Bob One think that the only Catholics who think like us are the few here on CalCath. There are COUNTLESS other Catholics in the world who believe like us and are sick and tired of the modernists, progressives, gay mafia, disgustingly liberal media, and many priests and bishops who deceive the innocent Catholics in the pews. I am so sick and tired of people giving up their morals and values to be “politically correct.” I can’t gut it anymore. I wish there were more people out there like yourself who would stand for Christ and His Church and be the soldiers for Christ like we promised at our Confirmations. But what these types I have mentioned don’t realize is that WE WILL win in the end because Mother Mary said that her Immaculate Heart will triumph and we have the most powerful weapon called the Rosary.
Bob One displays a type of lax, go along to get along, you’re alright I’m alright, it’s all good, commercial mentality that many many people are disgusted with, and these many people are not necessarily Catholic. Many many people work hard to discern good from bad, necessary from unnecessary, and other information evaluations needed for making wise decisions. Bob One simply foregoes that process and rests comfortably with anything that comes down the pike … except for discernment.
“Marvelous work with gangs”: You actually believe that hype, Bob One? Why don’t you look at the police blotters a bit more often, or check with public school administrators for the low down on gang activity abatement. Or if it works so well, why hasn’t the Mexican govt seen anything but gang growth? Bob One, stop reading every bit of feel good propaganda perfumed to get your attention, and do some observing of the real world.
Bob One, many of us agree with all of them; we have made the choice to do so. We conform our will to that of the Lord. In all things. Putting it all into action 24/7 is a challenge and takes an enormous effort to be mindful of all of it at all times. I fail. I am selfish and sinful. Father Boyle got mixed up somewhere. We don’t want to kick him out of the Church but he needs to accurately reflect the Church’s teaching. He is a priest.
Also, this interview was done 3 years ago, so he may have changed his mind by now. still praying.
k,
Your June 9, 12:01 pm post is very good. That is actually the best and most charitable post that you have ever written. I have never seen you defend the faith as well as you just did. Thank you for clarifying the truth! God job k, keep it up!
Yip keep it up. Thanks Catherine for pointing that out. : )
Hmm! Do you think the DEVIL is telling Father Boyle what to say? I pray for priests EVERY day. I hope he believes in the Truth before he dies. I’ll be praying for him…….along with the rest of those like him. God help him.
These are priest’s that are unwittingly doing the bidding of the devil…they become champion’s of maleficence and vice…the hottest rungs of hell are assigned to them…diabolic howling and the gnashing of teeth becomes the only music they hear…what sweet music they’ll hear
Wow…love your prose, BandedAgate. Great name too…any special significance?
I possess a vast collection of this beautiful variety of chalcedony…it is most mesmerizing to gaze into the multi-colored window of a newly polished cross-sectional slab of this beautiful gemstone. Magnificent micro-crystalline quartz…when unearthed a gemstone is a gemstone, when polished, it becomes a gem…when mounted it becomes a “jewel”…Three necessary attributes make a gemstone unique…rarity, beauty, and extreme durability or hardness…it must possess these 3 attributes, lest it be semi-precious
My mom & I went to see the Smithsonian gem collection. It’s worth a trip to D.C. just for that. The Hope Diamond was behind so many plates of glass you couldn’t even see it. Your description of creating a gem to a jewel is very like becoming a saint, as I’m sure you know. Lovely. I’ve not met a stone or a rock I didn’t like. (well, maybe polished granite ) Our vacations growing up usually involved someone getting hurt wielding a rock hammer but we had some neat specimens over the years. There was usually the whirring of a stone grinder going full tilt in my parents basement. haha The rocks on Lake Superior are truly superior. Stunning!! Thanks for sharing, agate.
The priest in the article is a heretic and schismatic.
He is not adhering to the teachings of the Church – 100%.
“ The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I approved … and the publication of which I today order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of catholic doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition and the Church’s Magisterium.
I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion. “ – Pope John Paul II. (CCC pg 5)
CCC: ” 2089
INCREDULITY is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it.
HERESY is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same.
APOSTACY is the total repudiation of the Christian faith.
SCHISM is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.”
In matters of Faith and Morals we may never disagree with the Doctrine of the Faith. This includes Bishops and Priests as well as the rest of us.
The Doctrine of the Faith is contained in the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”.
The CCC must be adhered to in total, without picking and choosing.
(We must not agree with any Bishop or Priest’s teaching or personal opinions if these opinions are not in full accord with the CCC. And we must correct him when possible. If he continues anti-Catholic teaching, then we must report him to the Diocese Bishop, and others if necessary.
The CCC is not the ultimate authority, as it is an inanimate object. It is good for instruction, but that is its limitation. St Peter is the rock upon which the Church stands, not what he or anyone else has written. Review your Eucharistic theology if this makes no sense. If the Eucharist makes no sense, then an elementary review is called for.
Skai, the BIBLE and the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” are the ultimate tools – for our KNOWLEDGE – provided by God’s Church for us to get to Heaven.
If you do not read the Bible and the CCC you will have no clue what you are talking about – and occasionally that shows.
The CCC continually refers back to the Bible, in the footnotes at the bottom of each page – which you would know if you read the CCC instead of complaining about it all the time.
God did not plant all this knowledge in our brains – we have been taught by HIS Church through the Bible and CCC.
(Or are you going to tell us that you personally met St. Peter and Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Paul ?)
From the successors of St Peter (who know more than you do) – – –
“ The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I approved … and the publication of which I today order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of catholic doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition and the Church’s Magisterium.
I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion. “ – Pope John Paul II. (CCC page 5)
and
“In this Year of Faith let us ask ourselves if we have actually taken a few steps to get to know Christ and the truths of faith more, by reading and meditating on the Scriptures, studying the Catechism, steadily approaching the Sacraments.” – Pope Francis, May 15, 2013.
Please discontinue making up your own theology, and pretending that it is Catholic. We all know that the Bible and CCC are books. These books lead us to God through knowledge of Him.
Btw you should read what the CCC teaches about the Eucharist and all the other Sacraments, and what is teaches about Holy Scripture – – – and then perhaps you would quit complaining. There is no excuse for ignorance.
Not so, Paul. The ultimate tools are prayer and the Sacraments. The written documents help fulfill “Man lives … but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”. Documents cannot surmount the Sacraments, nor can they abandon them. For example, one might have a bishop who is a notorious anti-Christ; and, if one is deprived thus of the authority of a man of God, and has recourse only to the books of God, that is good. However, as we can see in the case of St John Vianney (not sure if this is his name), who was sent to a village where there had not been a priest for a long long time. Catholicism there was in shambles, and the people were all messed up religiously. They had books, they had memories of Catholicism: But they were starving due to not having either the Bread or the Word of God for so long. The Saint immediately began the Sacramental life of that village, and it began to thrive in Christ. So, Paul, when you think to yourself that you can shine on the clergy and simply follow Jesus by reading good books and doctrines, then think again, because you are contradicted by Jesus Himself.
Can’t you read Mr. Skai ?
The Bible and CCC are the tools for our KNOWLEDGE !
The words from the mouth of God for our knowledge are printed in the Bible and CCC.
“The Doctrine of the Faith is contained in the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”.
The CCC must be adhered to in total, without picking and choosing.” Matt, you do not seem to understand some things. First, the CCC is not a step by step guide to putting together or leading a Catholic life. All it does is provide statements from Catholic authorities that you can try and interpret in the light of Christ. The CCC is not a collection of literal documents. It is a reference. It does not nor can it teach, because only people can teach, and it is not a person. Yes, the bureaucracy often might seem to be a person, since so much of modern man is accustomed to thinking that corporations are persons, and thus that something like a corporation, ie the Church bureaucracy, is a person; however, Matt, what you read can be interpreted in various ways. Thus the authority rests in the pope. This can be exemplified by that fact that the Church has a system of legal counsel, with many layers, so that a point that might be in dispute by two parties each of whom is trying to abide by or “adhere” to the CCC or the Bible or some other Church doctrine … so that these contending parties can find the authoritative judgment. This system includes a decision by the pope alone, if necessary. Again, Jesus guarantees the Church, and this is not the same as the publications of the Church. If you don’t yet get it, then you may have something to think about for a while. The Catholic Church is not a legal system, Matt.
Good replies Skai. : )
I just wish Paul would resond to what you just said. Why do they just quote from the CCC but do not reply when one replies with using reason and logic. Discernment is a gift.
Skai is so disobedient to our Popes it is very disturbing, almost to the point of being a schismatic. Popes John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis have all urged us to read the CCC.
(Even the best of Popes and best of Bishops know that they can not be available to everyone in the whole world or entire Diocese at one time to answer EACH of our questions regarding Faith and Morals.)
“In this Year of Faith let us ask ourselves if we have actually taken a few steps to get to know Christ and the truths of faith more, by reading and meditating on the Scriptures, studying the Catechism, steadily approaching the Sacraments.” – Pope Francis, May 15, 2013.
People quote the CCC because its answers are from the Magisterium – more accurate than any individual posting here can be in our limited space.
I’d rather hear from our Popes than Skai or Abecca (even though Abecca appears to be a nicer person.)
“….the Catechism has raised throughout the world, even among non-Christians, and confirms its purpose of being presented as a full, complete exposition of Catholic doctrine, enabling everyone to know what the Church professes, celebrates, lives, and prays in her daily life.” – Pope John Paul II (CCC page xvi)
Abeca, you can not discern what you have never heard. Discernment is a gift of the Holy Spirit. But you must also consider – – – – CCC: 407 The doctrine of original sin, closely connected with that of redemption by Christ, provides lucid discernment of man’s situation and activity in the world.
By our first parents’ sin, the devil has acquired a certain domination over man, even though man remains free.
Original sin entails “captivity under the power of him who thenceforth had the power of death, that is, the devil”.
Ignorance of the fact that man has a wounded nature inclined to evil gives rise to serious errors in the areas of education, politics, social action and morals. ”
Skai has been answered many times by several of us – using quotes from our Popes – whom he absolutely chooses to ignore regarding Holy Scripture and the CCC.
Skai tries very hard to discourage people from reading the Bible and CCC and Code of Canon Law. He does not want them to accurately know the Faith.
CCC: ” 1791 This ignorance can often be imputed to personal responsibility.
This is the case when a man takes little trouble to find out what is true and good, or when conscience is by degrees almost blinded through the habit of committing sin.
In such cases, the person is culpable for the evil he commits.”
ABECA – Discernment is indeed a gift from the Holy Spirit.
However, how do you personally define discernment ?
Discernment from the Holy Spirit certainly can not be in direct DISOBEDIENCE to our last 3 Popes who have asked us all to meditate on Holy Scriptures, and study the CCC.

I’ll get that from the library, Gratias. Thanks for tip. Hope it’s not too depressing, though.
Bob One:
“I went to the internet to check out this priest that is the center of such vitriol. If he doesn’t represent the church’s emphasis on social justice, no one does.” Here is the problem with your position in a nutshell. Fr. Boyle does not properly represent the Church’s social justice position. He does extremely well with a part of it– for which we should be thankful– but his dissent on a key point of the Church’s social teachings, the family, is unacceptable in a priest. If he were a parishioner in the pews, his number would be legion (as you pointed out in a comment) and as a priest I would try to lead him from error into truth. That’s what we parish priests do all the time. But as a priest he is in a position of leading people from truth into error, which he did in the course of this interview thrice: on the family, on women’s ordination, and on the proper reception of Communion.
Fr. Michael,
Thank you for your very much needed teaching post.
“For the poor you have always with you: and whensoever you will, you may do them good: but me you have not always.”…Mark 14:7 Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible.
On another topic regarding disobedience a poster named Gerard reminded us of these words……..”They seek to compromise the glory of Christ with their own selfish honor and vain esteem, the spiritual goods, with base acquisition of stipends; and if those two selfish ends are reached, they care not for other results of their preaching. Therefore they wander away from the pure and sincere doctrine, and sometimes even from the truth, which the sacred authors have recorded in the Scriptures and according to which the holy teachers have explained them; they slime it over with their own ingenious subtleties, seeking to cause rather the pleasure and admiration of their hearers than their advancement. As the divine truths reach the ears of the sinners so adulterated, they impress upon the mind rather the ingenious sophistry of the preacher, than the charity of Christ; they bring with it no force or efficacy for penetrating the hearts, although full of ingenious artifice to delight the ears.”…… Venerable María de Jesús de Ágreda
Thank you again Father Michael. Many within the Church are suffering greatly from individual personal wounds or crosses. When they see kindness and charity they are often more drawn and focused to these good acts of kindness than they are drawn to listening to the fullness of truth because it is very healing for them to witness such kindness and charity. This is the kindness and charity that they longed for in their childhoods or in their present lives and no one can blame them for seeking out and admiring acts of kindness. They have either not been taught or they have deliberately rejected the truth. Real healing only comes from faithfulness and obedience to the Divine Physician’s prescriptions that are contained in “all” of the Magisterial Teachings.
This is why it is so crucially important for a Catholic priest to always remain faithful especially in public speech. Parents realize that the best pediatricians and physicians are not always particularly charismatic in their speech and public demeanor, the important focus is the accuracy of their healing diagnosis. Who wants a charismatic doctor if he is failing to properly diagnose and failing to properly prescribe the full cure. This accuracy of a doctor’s diagnosis actually saves physical lives. A spot on accuracy of a diagnosis for how to attain our own eternal life is even more crucial and the full prescriptive cure comes through adherence to “all” of the teachings of Christ’s Church. People may call those prescriptions or teachings archaic and uncharitable but it is due to the fact that they deliberately reject the truth or they have not been taught to learn how to love and obey God first. They often unknowingly love and habitually nurture their own wounds first before they understand and value the reason behind the wounds of Christ Crucified.
Catholics have become so poorly catechized that they no longer see the difference. They only see the partial ingredient of the love that they are searching or longing for so they omit acknowledging the outright disobedience to God while praising the social work. I want to make it clear that Maryanne Leonard has not omitted to let us know that she does acknowledge that she is aware that this is not what the Catholic Church teaches. Maryanne also let us know that she does accept Church teaching but still Maryanne’s initial post received praise from each and every poster on this website who consistently dissents from Church teaching. That is not a good sign. This is showcasing the pervasive misguided sense of the meaning of Catholic social justice. Maryanne Leonard’s initial post also showcases the terrible consequences that arise when an alter Christus forgets who he is supposed to be in awe of first. Only God is PURE LOVE. Since Christ let us know that the poor we would always have with us, wasn’t Christ reminding us to ALWAYS show fidelity to HIM FIRST? Real and “total love” of our neighbor stems first from total fidelity to God.
There is something terribly wrong when good people can overlook a huge betrayal to Christ and then become more drawn to defend the outwardly kind actions of any individual as being more worthy of praise and more worthy of defending than vigorously defending the teachings of the Author of Perfect Love and His Church. For some dissenters on this website it is an outward showing of an inward rejection of Church teaching. For others it is not an intentional act of disloyalty to God, it is a case of “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” The father of lies has always known how to capture and enslave the passions and heartstrings of the wounded and the vulnerable.
One can only begin to imagine the many total conversions that would be possible if Father Boyle also charismatically defended “all” of the teachings of the Catholic church.
Father Boyle often mentions Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta who NEVER ONCE undermined the teachings of the Magisterium. Blessed Mother Teresa knew that showing rebellion against Church teaching would have been undermining the Author of Pure Love. This type of disloyalty not only confuses it also leads others to error, it also enables the deliberately disobedient who often hold positions of authority.
This is one of the quotes taken from interviews of Father Boyle.
One gentleman wrote “My favorite quotes from Father Gregory Boyle (S.J.) of Homeboy Industries in LA
Terry Gross once asked Father Boyle “How do you get up every day and smile at these kids who do drugs, sell drugs, murder, steal?”
Father G replied, “I would rather stand in awe of the burdens these kids bear than stand in judgment of the way they bear them.”
That is the kind of response that may please the anti-Catholic Hollywood producers of films but as Catholics when Father Boyle publicly rebels against Church teaching he is also announcing that he has misplaced his priorities. He has forgotten that his primary duty as a Catholic priest is to be standing MORE in absolute and unwavering awe of the salvific burden that Christ came to earth to bear for each and every human being. How did Christ do this? He did this by suffering and hanging on a Cross for three hours and establishing His One, True, Catholic and Apostolic Church on earth. To openly rebel against the teachings of the Author of Pure Love is counterproductive to truly “feeding Christ’s sheep.” It not only enables the deliberately disobedient it also confuses the sheep and then it leads many sheep astray so they too may rationalize becoming cafeteria Catholics.
Father Bob B was also right when he wrote. “There’s no getting around the fact that he’s a priest as well as a man, and we Catholics believe you can’t separate the two: it’s not like taking off a coat.”
It is unfortunate that Father Boyle missed this opportunity to teach the fullness of the Faith, especially to emphasize the entirely orthodox nature of his outreach to the poor and suffering.
However, he isn’t the only good Catholic who fails in that. The politically-inspired bifurcation of chastity and charity is common in these pages.
Father Boyle is a great man, a truly great man. His work with severely disadvantaged youngsters speaks for itself. It is done with love, and he teaches the young people he mentors to stand tall and find work that is self-fulfilling at the same time as it is harder, less remunerative, less flashy, and more demanding than selling drugs or turning tricks.
He is saving lives, and yes, he has saved many a child’s soul. His work is hard, especially for a man for whom cancer has been a serious issue. Yet he goes on, not unlike Father Serra, whose foot was severely infected yet he kept on walking the King’s Highway in service of the Greatest King of All.
Is Father Boyle’s liberal philosophy the same as mine? In line with that of the Catholic Church? No.
I do believe in Church teachings and am convinced that if all the world followed even just the Ten Commandments, this world would be a joyous place to live. I think Father Boyle’s big heartedness has taken him right over the cliff philosophically. I think he is in error.
But while he is in error, and grievously so in that he is a priest and yet publically denouncing Church teachings, he goes on serving and serving and serving, all the while teaching those whom the rest of us are afraid of. In short, he is wonderful but imperfect, something like you and me now that I think of it.
I would not like to see Father Boyle become a keynote speaker at any Catholic events, even those that are Catholic in Name Only, as great speaker that he is, he is out of step with our Holy Roman Catholic Church’s teachings, and that is to be in error. Serious error.
I think someone who loves the Church, whether he or she be lay person or priest, should take Father Boyle lovingly in hand and nudge him back to where he started from, to the basic teachings of the Church.
I do think Jesus will find his decades of service to be of more worth than my own, try though I may have, even though my thinking is virtually identical to that of the Church I love. I am a survivor of horrific actions against my person, committed on Catholic Church property, which has scarred me for life and ended the lives of two members of my immediate family, yet I have finally seen clearly enough to see that it was not the Church that harmed me, it was individuals ordained in the church who harmed me. I have forgiven the Church for the harm that befell me through the sinful failures of its ordained members.
Father Boyle needs to forgive the Church as well for daring to teach that with which he does not personally agree. To denounce Church teachings publically is to harm the Church itself, and for that he must be counseled by those more competent than my own small self. He is helping children, helping society, but he is both serving and somewhat in rebellion against the Church. In that he is in serious error, indeed. He desperately needs and might even make good use of your loving help in guiding him lovingly toward right thinking, be ye priest or lay member of the Church founded by Jesus Christ himself.
I won’t bother to defend myself against posters who question my sanity or my faith; I believe my thinking in agreeing with Church teachings, after years of pondering some of the more difficult teachings of the Church, would meet Vatican approval. I am more concerned about my life being devoted to the highest possible use of which I am capable.
Folks, no need to attack me or change my thinking; it’s a bit too late. I’ve decided who I am and what I stand for, and I’m satisfied with it.
There’s still lots of hope for helping Father Boyle on his journey toward sainthood. This is a man worth saving. All of us can be influenced by good thinking and teaching. Go see what you can teach him, and go see what you can learn from him while you’re at it. Go in love, and go in peace.
You don’t have to have Vatican approval. You answer only to God! You have taken the time to think through your faith and beliefs rather than taking a non-thinking approach to it. I had a spiritual advisor once, a priests, that said that each morning when you get up you should ask yourself if there really is a God. If the answer is yes, then say your morning prayers.
“You don’t have to have Vatican approval. You answer only to God!” Bob One, again, you have no concept at all of the Catholic Church. You’re a sham as a Catholic, and should find a good protestant bureaucracy to join.
On matters of faith and morals we MUST listen to Holy Mother Church…lest we not know what to believe Skai!…This the very reason we have protestant’s practicing birth control, proclaiming, “I’m Saved”…once “saved, always saved”…this rot is the reason they are heretic…because they choose to defy The Church, reject the Papacy…and look what has become of them…thousands of “flavors” of protestantism in the world…ALL FALSE, with a myriad of divergent beliefs…the only thing they can ALL agree on is their hatred for the Catholic Church… By listening to the Church, we are also following the Gospel and in fact ALL of “sacred scripture”… without The Church to guide us…NOBODY knows what to believe!…see my point
Thousands of men and women who are not even Catholic work with and help kids in need. Boyle is one among them. Boyle, however, defies Jesus, Who says to seek first the Kingdom of God. Boyle flames against the Word of God. Psychiatry founder, Sigmund Freud, was not Catholic and he supposedly helped countless people through his discoveries; however, Freud’s work also helped program the public to accept Marxism and free sex. Mao Tsung helped unify hundreds of million Chinese, which helped them, but at the same time he authored the killing of a hundred million Chinese. Maryanne, what is the difference with Boyle whose words promulgate radical feminism and sodomy by his sly defiance of God?
Again, Fr. Boyle personally, who I have known for years, is not the issue; he is a man motivated by the good in these works and charities to which he has overwhelmingly devoted his efforts. But mark these words, now that he has loudly proclaimed these dissenting positions, leftist-atheist forces will push and drive him more and more as a wedge dividing the Catholic belief and its faithful (look at the comments above and see how successful this campaign already has become). Even purely from a public-relations viewpoint, he should have held his tongue on these matters because they are now a distraction to his own cause; but from a pride standpoint alone, he is glaringly in conflict with Ignatius’ own “”Rules on Thinking with the Church” in the Exercises. I am sorry for where this position he has marked out is going to take him eventually.
Here is what the Pope said today to a group of priests and sisters, in an informal discussion: “Say you err, [or] make a blunder – it happens! Maybe you’ll receive a letter from the Congregation for Doctrine [sic], saying that they were told this or that thing…. But don’t let it bother you. Explain what you have to explain, but keep going forward…. Open doors, do something where life is calling out [to you].
So the Pope is saying an err can be made on the part of people like Fr.Boyle. The pope is saying Fr.Boyle should admit his error, and keep doing the good works with gangs that he does. I don’t see the Pope’s statement as endorsing things like same sex marriage, etc.
going forward in bringing Souls toward Heaven, does not mean approving same-sex marriage – which is sodomy.
same sex marriage can take Souls to Hell.
“Explain what you have to explain”: This is one of the problems, Bob One. They don’t. The nefarious ones hide it all. The Pope is addressing serious and faithful Catholics, not the stream of filth that has infiltrated the Church and curia in the name of the gay lobby. These gay agenda sharks do not make errors, but insidious moves bent on destruction of the creation of God, and of the derangement of souls such as in their own perverted image.
Saul Alinsky was also devoted to helping poor people, so perhaps he too is on the road to sainthood … All those in favor say aye.
It is certainly possible that Saul Alinsky and Jesus are enjoying a good laugh even now, even if to Saul’s surprise.
Boyle should be disrobed. He can do the same good works as a lay person. He is also one of the friends of St. Genevieve Catholic High School in Panorama City, a LGBT friendly high school run by Fr. Alden Sison and Dan Horn that allies itself with pro-homosexual-marriage foundations that fund it. Boyle, just like Sison and Horn, is leading a whole generation of youngsters astray from salvific Catholic Church teachings. It’s an overblown arrogance that basically says that it knows better than 2000 years of constant Church teaching guided by the Holy Spirit. An arrogance sourced in secular humanism that believes we are “evolving” and that we can throw Church teaching and discipline out the window because we are so much more “enlightened” now. Purile, illogical, and damned thinking – literally. Satan loves the Fr. Boyles and Fr. Sisons of the world because because through them he can gorge on many hundreds of souls for the price of one.
this priest is not committing a mere blunder, but heresy and schism and scandal.
This man is a priest in good standing with the Roman Pontiff and the Society of St. Pius X is not? Really?
I think the SSPX is in good standing with Rome, but there is some kind of legalist issue, and not a spiritual one. There does not even seem to be a religious issue but one of authority and this issue is nebulous. The SSPX bishops are in communion with the Pope and thus with the Church, and are therefore members of the Church and their Sacraments are Sacraments of the Church, valid. The SSPX Holy Eucharist, as so with the Orthodox Church’s Holy Eucharist, is a valid and real Sacrament, which unites the faithful to God.
I have great respect for Fr. Greg but he is human. Aren’t we all. Please let’s not denigrate or throw out the… I struggle with blocking speakers who do not check on every box of the HOLY enough. Who is? I do recognize that Catholic organizations must be careful and not create or ask for scandal. Fr. Boyle’s work and mission is aligned with CC. He is not being asked to speak at a Conference for the Clergy or Doctrine of the Faith where his views and work would not illuminate and are in fact not aligned with the Church. Again, who of us would be worthy to stand as a representative of every facet of the Church? On the topic of women priests: as a woman, I do not feel deprived of a role in the priesthood. Is it something that I would like to be? Yes. In a wistful manner and with great regard and reverence for our men who are called and respond. Women have been gifted with something called motherhood and the ability to co-create with the Trinity. Each gender has the ability to give life collaborating according to the Lord’s plan. As for SSA: As the mother of a child who is sexually active with another man, I love them both. I believe they should be celibate. I do not want marriage between same sex couples to be legal. My son and his friend know this. We still travel together as a family, count on each other, love each other and disagree with each other. Children and childhood have become the currency spent on the demands and desire to legitimize the sexual appetite of adults: heterosexual AND homosexual. Our society not only kills its young (in the womb) but goes the next step and eats is young as soon as they can think (or be taught an agenda.) I love (and disagree) with the Church but work to better understand those areas in which I disagree. It is mine to privately pray and work to understand it’s teaching, the Lord’s teaching, the depth of it’s love and mercy. The Church does not need to (and hopefully won’t) conform to me…or society. I lament the loss of the Boy Scout organization and lack of male leadership and courage. Thank goodness for the leadership of the Church. Stay strong Fr. Boyle. I hope his message and work continue to be heard far and wide. I hope his differences with Church teaching do not distract from the good he does. I hope that we as the body of Christ spend our time conversing with each other face to face on these matters as well as private quiet discernment.
excellent post Nunca, thanks for that.
This is excuse that we are human and aren’t we all? Is getting rather boring and stupid.
One more of these pedestrian utterances: “I have great respect for Fr. Greg but he is human. Aren’t we all”! The implicit heresy in this type of claim comes from its distancing itself from the infallible doctrine of the Holy Eucharist that unites man with God. Yes, of course we are all human; but being human does not effect salvation. Salvation is what the Church is all about. Thus, to use being human as an excuse for heresy is heresy.
Skai and YFC-
CCC: ” 2496 The means of social communication (especially the mass media) can give rise to a certain passivity among users, making them less than vigilant consumers of what is said or shown. Users should practice moderation and discipline in their approach to the mass media. They will want to form enlightened and correct consciences the more easily to resist unwholesome influences.
CCC: ” 2512 Society has a right to information based on truth, freedom, and justice. One should practice moderation and discipline in the use of the social communications media. ”
Both of you have a tendency to promote your own thing without regard to honesty, charity, kindness, and impact on all potential readers.
Tebow, have you ever heard of the Walter Mitty School of Life? “Users should practice moderation and discipline in their approach to the mass media”: Are you implying that are knowledge should come from mass media? That is not the implication of your two CCC quotes, but you make it seem like that is what it is saying. And then you use the rhetorical device of assuming that others are not using discipline or moderation. Also, you have to keep some perspective on the rest of Church doctrine such as what Jesus says about spitting out the lukewarm.
Further, Tebow: Whereas you recommend lukewarm, it is a good post because it brings out the difference between that and the posts of both YFC and myself, which could be called hot or cold, anything but lukewarm. YFC has promise because, although he intones some depressin at times, yet he goes at his posts and engages the arguments with a lot of energy … Jesus can work with hot or cold, Tebow, but not with lukewarm. Realize that catechisms are not infallible, and are written by committees, which should indicate a bit of a problem form literalist thumpers.
Thanks Tim, congrats on your new contract!
Just another priest making statements that are contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. And again, some posters saying that’s okay.
What one Pope holds another Pope can overturn.
An old discussion – but I just read through the posts today. These posts make me grateful I was not born and raised a Catholic. Such hateful diatribe.
The diatribe is not respecting and honoring God. God valued and honored variation, God honored both ants, and lions, chimps and apes.
This story generated 250 comments. What if each of you had just quietly requested a mass for him instead? https://tanbooks.benedictpress.com/index.php/Wonders-of-Mass
He would still have a free will. God does not take away our free will under any circumstances. People choose to go to Hell by their own actions.

Scandal, heresy, and schism must be thwarted.
