The following comes from a Dec. 31 release issued by the Cardinal Newman Society.
In the second of a series of reports on the Common Core State Standards published by The Cardinal Newman Society, education expert Dr. Andrew Seeley finds that the standards are inconsistent with Catholic schools’ roots in classical education.
The report is part of the Newman Society’s Catholic Is Our Core project to educate key stakeholders in Catholic education—Catholic families, pastors, teachers, principals, superintendents and bishops—about concerns with the Common Core and its potential impact on Catholic education.
Dr. Seeley, executive director of the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education and a tutor at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, Calif., writes in “The Common Core vs. the Classical Roots of Catholic Education”:
“Today’s best schools retain at least some key elements of classical education, especially with regard to the study of religion, history, and literature. A closer look at the goals and methods of the Common Core reveals that they are fundamentally at odds with the discovery of Truth at the heart of an authentically Catholic education.”
While acknowledging that critical thinking is a key objective of both classical education and the Common Core, Seeley finds that the Common Core Standards require grammar school students to apply critical thinking techniques much earlier that they are developmentally able to do so.
“[Y]ounger children… naturally learn by absorbing language and facts. They are not ready for critical thinking; they are ready to trustingly accept whatever is presented to them in an orderly, engaged manner. Learning by heart and careful observation are key powers to be developed, not just with facts and vocabulary, but with the beautiful rhythms and rich images of the best poetry and prose. The Common Core intends to make critical thinking, embodied in literary analysis, the focus of every grade level.”
The emphasis of Catholic education is the “discovery of Truth,” and key to the “discovery of Truth” is an understanding of the development of a child’s mind. Seeley explains that Common Core requires at each grade level “dialectical/logical/critical activities” which are more apropos for “pre-adolescent and early adolescent years of questioning and challenging.” By exposing students to these activities at an earlier age, “Common Core methods… push young children into finding their own truths….”
The Common Core standards are driven by a desire to allow American students to “compete successfully in the global economy,” Seeley writes.
“The Common Core wants to educate for life; but it articulates life’s highest goals as career success and productive contribution to the global economy. Content must be drawn from a wide-range of cultures, leading students to be able to work well with the variety of cultural and personal viewpoints of their future corporate fellow laborers.”
Is this what we want of our Catholic students? Seeley notes that “under the guise of mutual understanding, curricular materials are likely to usher in an aggressively secular orthodoxy,” and the Common Core will in fact become a “dictatorship of relativism.”
Such relativism has already woven itself into Catholic education, whereby “information needed to master prescribed subjects” replaces “faith and reason.” By contrast, a Catholic school that has maintained a “time-tested classical approach engages children to discover the truth of reality, both visible and invisible.”

Here is a six grade assignment from Common Core in a Catholic school:
It was an argumentative writing assignment of a hypothetical scenario of 8 people on a space ship, and one has to be eliminated in order for the others to survive. The class was divided into groups of 8, and each child assumed the role of one of those people on board (captain, engineer, doctor, pregnant woman, 17-year-old student, scientist, nurse, and reporter). Each student had to write a persuasive argument to convince the others why he or she should live and not be eliminated. Then the group voted on whom to eliminate (which individual dies).
Initially they wanted to eliminate the “pregnant woman”, but she argued well her position and so the group voted to eliminate the student, because the student was deemed a burden, and did not contribute much to the survival of the others.
Does that not sound like something from the Nazi era? Shame on those so-called Catholics who would allow such diabolical teaching in our Catholic schools!
To our bishops: The wolves are devouring the flock, please don’t stand by idly!
Fight the good fight, thank you for posting this. This IS sick!
What you say is true! Last week one of my elementary school aged nephews related to me a similar scenario. He brought it up in the context that he knew that he would be the one his parents would chose to get rid of! I instantly realized that he must have learned about this in school! He goes to public school. Imagine what this is setting up for our young people! We should all be very frightened indeed.
Dear Lord Preserve Us! Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, send now your Spirit over the earth. Let the Holy Spirit live in the hearts of all nations. That they may be preserved from degeneration, disaster and war. May the Lady of All Nations, who once was Mary, be our Advocate. Amen.

“Stand by idly” ! some of the bishops, perhaps a majority ARE THE WOLVES DEVOURING THEIR FLOCKS!
Just a quick glance at the list of speakers, past and PRESENT will tell you that!

Fight the good fight, you are exactly right. What amazes me is that none of the students were willing to give up their own life to save the others. Now that takes real FAITH. May the Good Lord give it to all of us. By the way, what ever happen to “the captain goes down with the ship”, or at least is the last one off. Recently, an American ship’s captain did exactly that — did not get off his sinking ship until he was sure everyone else was safe. He was declared a true hero. Even the pagans admired Heratius at the Bridge.
Actually, it might have been an airplane captain, but whatever, he made sure everyone was safe before he got off.
Anne,
It was a Catholic Naval Academy graduate Air Line Pilot. He graduated before Annapolis became politically correct (actually incorrect is more fitting)!
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika!

Well, God bless and reward him well for his courage, bravery and concern for those under his care.
Or course the children in the article were only first graders but they still need to be taught some self sacrificing love but not on such a serious level. We need to bring back such books as William Bennett’s “Book of Virtues” for young people, right along with stories from the Bible.
In Disney’s movie “Frozen” it teaches that to give up ones life is the ultimate gift of love. So happy to have a morally sound movie to take my grandkids to. Seems our American educational system has derailed and we will have to “cherry pick” our way through the muck. Where was the outrage a year ago when people tried to warn us? When are parents going to “push back” and “take back” their childrens education?
Edit/correction: “to give up ones life FOR ANOTHER, is the ultimate gift of LOVE”
Sandra D., I agree with you. In fact every American of good will MUST push back! Currently there is still more of us than them (although, probably not here in California)! The next move after this nation wide implementation of Common Core will be to make it illegal to homeschool your own kids. Common Core will also become mandatory curriculum for all private schools, who currently reject it. Common Core is cultural indoctrination along the lines of Chairman Mao of China!
In Old Testament Biblical Times, when the Israelites chose to disobey God by incorporating some of the pagan practices of their neighbors, God gave them over to people who were worse than them! Chinese communist are buying up our land, homes and businesses! They are becoming government employees, such as IRS agents! Mexican aristocrats are holding onto their wealth and power by encouraging their uneducated citizens to pour into the United States and take back land from the evil “United Staters” who took it from them! They are further encouraged to become dual citizens of both countries so that they can take money from the evil “United Staters” through the free educational system and welfare system, etc. Of course, much of this money is sent back to Mexico, which convinces the poor who remain there that it IS the “United Staters” who have been the cause of their poverty all along!
Education experts blast DOJ’s apparent call for race-based system of punishment of schoolkids |FOX News
I have encountered this problem from many different perspectives, from that of simple classroom management as a whole – to the MISANDRY (Hatred of Men & Boys, Masculinity & Normal Heterosexuality) that pervades far too much of what passes for Academentia.
The Fact that the Sexes (only two XX & XY) are complimentary does not mean that Boys and Girls Aren’t Different in important aspects of how they play and learn.
I have also seen ‘bad apples’ turn themselves around (usually with help, but sometimes just as a part of maturing) as well as ‘teachers pets’ turn in to vicious bullies – of both genders.
Flexibility is important – but not at the sacrifice of Other Children who are short changed because teacher is constantly dealing with the trouble makers.
Sadly – I have also seen schools where the students are mostly of the same race / ethnic group – and yet Radical Feminists of the same group get a kick out of getting in their licks against the Hated Hetero-Patriarchy while the Boys are too young to even understand let alone defend themselves – and Punished for Complaining about Misandry – which they understand quite well, despite never having actually heard the word.
“The Attorney General was right, but if you look across the board, boys are being punished for simply being boyish,” Christina Sommers, a resident scholar for the American Enterprise Institute, told FoxNews.com, referring to recent stories about how young male students were suspended and expelled for making a gun gesture with their finger and making a play weapon from a Pop Tart.
“It’s just the way they play, but the policy doesn’t allow for common sense.”
