Young people are growing less tolerant of LGBTQ individuals, a jarring turn for a generation traditionally considered embracing and open, a survey released Monday shows.
The number of Americans 18 to 34 who are comfortable interacting with LGBTQ people slipped from 53% in 2017 to 45% in 2018 – the only age group to show a decline, according to the annual Accelerating Acceptance report. And that is down from 63% in 2016.
Driving the dilution of acceptance are young women whose overall comfort levels plunged from 64% in 2017 to 52% in 2018, says the survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD.
“We count on the narrative that young people are more progressive and tolerant,” John Gerzema, CEO of The Harris Poll, told USA TODAY. “These numbers are very alarming and signal a looming social crisis in discrimination.”
Among the findings:
• 36% of young people said they were uncomfortable learning a family member was LGBTQ, compared with 29% in 2017.
• 34% were uncomfortable learning their doctor was LGBTQ vs. 27% a year earlier.
• 39% were uncomfortable learning their child had a school lesson on LGBTQ history vs. 30% in 2017.

Could lt be that this is caused by increasingly aggressive pushing of pro homosexual political agenda on the majority of the country? Could it be that this pro homosexual push is increasingly less tolerant and even openly hostile to anything and anyone who does not support it and “celebrate” it? Could it be that the young people are starting to see the fruits of this push, such as “transgender” males pushing out female athletes and dominating competition and taking away scholarship opportunities for women?
I think young people are getting tired of the PC agenda always being pushed on them in school and elsewhere. I have been rather surprised when talking to some young people and hearing their non-PC, non-liberal feelings. It’s complex and the reasons for it are varied. Some are just tired of the constant indoctrination through the educational system.
Never should have been cool to begin with. We’re still only seeing the tip of the iceberg in the degeneracy and society-undermining intent behind the LGBT movement. If they are not stopped, they will destroy Western civilization because they will destroy the natural family and the meaning of marriage and sex.
Thank you for running this article. It could be that the younger generation does not watch TV and so is not being indoctrinated by the media that GLAAD has trained.
The problem is that what was private has now become public. I worked with gay men and women for 35 years, including my first partner teacher who died of AIDS and another man whose recommendation helped get me my current job. Their orientations were known but no one made a big deal of it because THEY didn’t make a big deal of it. The new generation throws it in everyone’s face and it’s starting to get thrown back. Tolerating what you do in your “closet” is one thing, but having to affirm it outside doesn’t sit so well.
We don’t do it in the closet, and neither do you.
I wish you were doing it in the closet.
Instead, you’re doing it in the front yard and its making the younger generation uncomfortable.
When numbers dipped a year ago for young males, GLAAD went to where male audiences consume content: video games. The advocacy group worked with the industry to introduce diverse characters and help shape attitudes.
The group has similar outreach plans for targeting young women in a popular female venue, country music concerts.

Most young people are still OK with LGB people (especially LB women), but the trans right push is a bridge too far. This is what the backlash is all about.
Young women are often the victims of the trans rights movement. They are the one who lose competitions to biological males. They are the ones who have to deal with accommodations that make the locker room even more awkward. Finally, they are the prime target for those pushing expensive and damaging “transition” therapies that include hormones and surgery.
When girls look to adults for help, the response is that their problems are acceptable collateral damage. The cultural left that raised these girls on girl power and women’s rights has turned on them.
The public activities, as opposed to private lives, of SOME in the LBGTQ community, especially during pride activities, have been a turn off to many especially the young who seem quite sensitive to hypocrisy and social bad taste. As noted above, there was less open persecution than many realize a half century ago and more acceptance of differences in people who did not feel it necessary to ask others either their opinion or approbation.
One year does not a trend make. It will be interesting to see next year’s survey.
How about three years? The three years mentioned in the USA Today article:
2016 — 63% acceptance
2017 — 53% acceptance
2018 — 45 % acceptance
Looks like a trend to me.
My observation is that young people are very compassionate and loving and first saw the LBGTQ movement as the underdogs and victims. The movement has become very commercialized and also very defensive and hostile towards anyone who has a difference in opinion. no matter how respectably that opinion is conveyed.
