The following arrived in a February 28 email.
Una Voce Ventura is pleased to announce that Archbishop Jose Gomez has, together with Father Preston Passos, parish administrator of Saint Mary Magdalen church in Camarillo, made a generous provision for the weekly offering of the Extraordinary Form (Traditional Latin) Mass at the parish chapel, including major feast days.
Though we are saddened to see the end of the Extraordinary Form Mass after more than fifteen years at Mission San Buenaventura, we are optimistic that this new location, with a mid-morning time schedule, will allow more people to attend the Extraordinary Form Mass.
Una Voce Ventura will take this opportunity help grow the influence of the Extraordinary Form in the Archdiocese, under an Archbishop who is favorable to the Traditional Mass, and a Parish Administrator who is generous and welcoming.
Starting Sunday, March 24th, Palm Sunday, the Mass will be held at 10 am in the historic parish Chapel, built in 1913. (Note: Easter and Christmas will be exceptions, please check the parish bulletin for times).

May God be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.
Hurrah for Bishop Gomez. Finally, showing some back bone.
That is prime time and a very nice parish right off Hiway 101. The tridentiners should be very happy with this arrangement.
Thank you for this article.
I hope all those within driving distance of St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, 2532 Ventura Boulevard, Camarillo, California will attend the “Extraordinary Form Mass” at 10am on Palm Sunday.
Thank you to Abp Gomez and Fr Passos.
For those who have never attended an EF (Latin) Mass, it is recommended that you get a copy of the “Latin-English Booklet Missal” by the Coalition in support of Ecclesia Dei, or some other Latin and English translation of the 1962 Missal.
You will get the most from the Mass if you know what is taking place at all times.
In addition, it is customary that those who attend an EF Mass wear business attire that is modest, in addition most women wear a mantilla over their hair.
You will be kneeling when receiving Our Lord God, and receving on the tongue not in your hands.
After attending several EF Masses, if you decide this form is for you – be sure to register at this Parish, and remove your name from your previous parish.
The Ecclesia Dei missalettes will be provided at St. Mary Magdalen Chapel.
I love this beautiful Church…haven’t been to it it many years…it is very narrow, and long and feels and looks like you are in the nineteenth century. I am very pleased to read that the latin mass will be said for the faithful. At my parish we have a latin mass, every Sunday as well as three novus ordo masses.
St. Mary Magdalen Chapel is a lovely old church, rich with local historical significance, and is a great new home for the Traditional Latin Mass. The community of Camarillo is blessed with a superb climate and is home to Leisure Village, a retirement community filled with lots of active Catholics, many of whom will be thrilled to be able to attend a Traditional Latin Mass close by. The TLM returning to St. Mary Magdalen’s is good news for Ventura County and an excellent solution to this sad story, which I believe must be distressing Blessed Junipero Serra and the other good padres who built the Mission San Buenaventura and the region’s first water delivery system all the way back in the 1700’s.
Beautifully stated MaryAnne…next time I travel up to Santa Barbra, i must remember to stop in to this parish and spend a few moments in meditation…
Let us rejoice at the fruits of the Second Vatican Council!
Thanks to Vatican II, the Traditional Latin Mass is now being celebrated in Camarillo, where young men are also studying for the priesthood.
Hurray!
You mean in spite of Vatican II…
Exactly Canisius
No, Cani, BECAUSE of Vatican II!
As so many keep pointing out, the Second Vatican Council never outlawed the Traditional Latin Mass, so, you see, it’s THANKS TO the wisdom of this great Ecumenical Council that we can still enjoy the TLM in all its glory.
Hurray! :)
I disagree…VCII had nothing to do with the furtherance of this rite…
This guy Mackz is a trouble maker.
Vatican II for one never said that the Mass of the ages should not be celebrated. That notion was an invention of the enemies of the Church.
You are so right, Mbûkû!
Vatican II never abolished the Latin Mass, so we have Vatican II to thank for its survival!
The modernist’s for years “twisted” VCII into some kind of modernist blue-print for the Catholic laity…if one reads the post-conciliar documents and meditates on them, believe me, the last thing they would be is a “modernist”…
Vatican II or Jesus Christ?
Vatican 2 has been serving to expose the faithless and confused.
And Mass is also being celebrated in Spanish, Vietnamese, etc., showing the lovely diversity of the Church!
Hurray!
The Church has no diversity. When God looks at souls he does not see a Vietnamese soul.
The Church does not need ACLU style ‘diversity’.
Is anyone aware of any traditional Latin Masses celebrated here in the USA where the homily is given in Spanish, Vietnamese, etc.?
St. Anne FSSP 12:00 Noon Mass is a spanish Homily Mass.
Yes, St. Annes FSSP is in San Diego
St. John the Baptist in Costa Mesa which already has a TLM with english homily is gearing up to do a second TLM with spanish.
Also, one can contact the priests who say the TLM and ask them which ones have sermons in Spanish.
Although we rejoice because of this new venue, we cannot help noticing the similarity between what is happening here and how it compares to the hostile and adversial Communist regimes grudingly granting their permission on a very limited basis much as the bishops are now doing. And let’s face it, after over 40 years of open hostility and destruction, by the Church and the bishops, frankly there isn’t much interest left for the Latin Mass, Still yet, we do rejoice, and we recall the words of Our Lord on this subject… many are called, but few are chosen, and in the last days the faith of most will grow cold, and also this… will I find any faith at all when I return?
At my parish, the Latin mass is always full to overflow…people are even outside, with additional chairs provided for the faithful…Praised be Jesus Christ…forever
Does it matter really how the permission is given as long as it’s given? Would you please drop your hostility towards Bishops for one. We in the trad movement — hostility towards bishops has not helped us. It’s sickening just how uncharitable some people are towards Bishops yet they claim to be Catholic.
Catholics need to show their love for their Bishops, and true and good affection towards them.
It’s primarily not hostility towards bishops, but bishops’ hostility towards the Church which is being pointed out. Tune into what the Pope-emeritus has pointed out … such as “filth” in the Church in high places. Hide your head in the sand and guess what becomes vulnerable.
Instead of complaining about the past, join the present and hope for the future! Join a local chapter of Una Voce and work towards the restoration of the Traditional Mass! Support priests and seminarians who desire to learn and say this Holy Mass. Pray for our new Archbishop of Los Angeles who personally came to Camarillo to understand the concerns and gave his blessing for the growth that will come.
Hammer the past; forge the future.
This is the Church in which I gave my first homily as a Deacon, many years ago. I like the architecture of the building for sentimental reasons and for the beauty of the windows and the other works of art in the building. But I found that it was not good for real participation in the Mass. People couldn’t see what was going on at the altar and those in the back were often distracted by the talking of the people gathered outside waiting for Mass to be “read” and done with.
But perhaps people aren’t all that interested in knowing what’s going on during Mass or praying along with the Priest, fully participating in the Liturgy by offering themselves to God completely and without hesitation. Instead they are more concerned with the way Mass is done and what language it is in. They remind me of those who are invited to the Wedding Feast and then complain at how it is served by the Bridegroom.
Father John, with due love and respect to you; Do I need to see what is happening at the Altar to participate fully in Mass? Correct my Catechesis, but is full participation not an interior prayerful union with Christ and his Priest for a particular Mass being offered? Unless I have a particular duty such as Altar serving or Singing in Choir at the mass?
In regards to Vatican II and what it says, it’s only to be understood in the light of what came before it and since it’s not a dogmatic council, it does not carry the weight of faith. So to understand the intentions of the Fathers of the Council, I have to look at it with eyes on what the Church has always understood.
So, If am in error, please direct me to the correct Catechism teaching on full participation in relation to seeing what is happening at the Altar.
The general understanding of participation now, such as holding hands and singing every song (demanding that all song be sung by all in some cases) and carrying baskets , being a Eucharistic minister and all that stuff going on around mass is to my understanding a false understanding of participation.
“people couldn’t see”: well, if they had any faith, then they would be able to see regardless of the distance or obstacles. The long passage way to the altar sort of symbolizes the long slow path up to Calvary … but I digress, after all, this is the era of Vatican 2 where the crucifixion is nothing more than history or even a myth. And worse of all is the shape makes it impossible for gathering in a circle of peace.
I know Fr Preston personally. He is a good man.
Fr. John for your information most people and families who attend the EF Masses, or as i like to call it TLM, are more devoted, pious, and participate regularly in the EF masses, and what is happening at the High Altar! We are more charitable, friendly, and willingly to help direct someone to the EF Mass using the Red Booklet at all EF Masses! So your assesment about the Mass and those who attend is not so at the EF Masses! Maybe years ago but not at all today at any EF Masses! Nice Try! But No Cigar!
Modernists always have a “hidden agenda”… “by their fruits you shall recognize them”… think of the holy fruit that burgeoned after the Council of Trent, by those saints who exclusively attended the Tridentine mass…
Personal Agendas have no place in the Catholic Church. There is protestantanism for that where one can interpret the bible to mean whatever they think it means.
Think of all the saint’s that were devoted to Our Lady, and only attended the Tridentine mass for HUNDREDS of years… the “roll-call” of canonized saints is staggering… they saved their souls by attending the TLM exclusively… it obviously provided a bounty of spiritual graces, which led these holy men and women toward a glorious walk with Christ Jesus, into the Kingdom, before the beatific vision of the Trinity.
According to some V II was a new re-founding.
I’ve been picturing V II as a window opened to let out the smoke.
“Fr. John”: Your comments are most disappointing, although fully understandable coming from a CA-based priest. Have you fully read Summorum Pontificum, Universae Ecclesiae, Veternum Sapientia? The Novus Ordo is one of the key reasons for the Catholic diaspora today. Priest as entertainer, with the presence of Christ shunted off to a corner, or out of sight, entirely. Dancers, Broadway songs as hymns, clown masses, women acting as priests, priests that fail to preach, accurately, the full range of the Faith, and wide variations of masses in churches only a few miles apart — the full disaster. The Catholic Church did not begin at Vatican II, although your comments certainly imply a belief that it did. The rootlessness of today’s Church leads to more and more demands for almost daily change, until the Church is brought down to the level of society and its “People Magazine” morality. You cannot discard centuries of how the Church, and its saints, worshipped God, because you somehow think that now — finally — people can really, truly, pray the correct way. This is nonsense. Aside from the cesspool in the Church caused by the prevalence of the homosexual culture there — a story only now coming fully to light — the modern-day rejection of the Church’s own history is the cause of its downfall. Your attitude is so completely in keeping with modernity that it is comforting, in a way, to see, in full bloom, what must be pushed against, and changed, if the Church is to return to its prior glory as the vessel of salvation.
I just noticed the EF Mass will be celebrated in the parish CHAPEL and not the Church…
Quite right – the 1913 Chapel is pictured, and is visible from Hwy 101. The parish church is a mile or so to the north, and was likely built to accommodate a larger congregation. The main church appears to date from the 1980s, and is a red-brick structure of minimal architectural, liturgical or historic interest.
Must be a fairly small number of tridentiners in Ventura County?
There is a correlation between Homoheresy and hatred of the Traditional Latin Mass. Satan is using unnatural acts to mock God and also as the vehicle to destroy souls. The satanic ritual black mass also mocks God in Latin.
The wheel is turning… for the better… the modernists and their pro-homosexual agenda are being outed… the liturgical abuses are being recognized and challenged and the secularization that has insidiously crept into the liturgy is being expunged… the fact that pederast priests and “filth” that masquerade as bishops and archbishops are being exposed and condemned, is really Heaven sent… this is “spiritual house-cleaning”, with a supernatural catalyst propelling this important and much needed purification…. the “dross” is being removed… slowly and inexorably.
It is also good that the powers that be are setting up an adjunct church where the gays and abortionists can go and pretend they’re Catholic.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Saint Michael the Archangel , defend us in the day of battle. St. John Bosco, pray for us. St. Catherine of Siena pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. St. Peter and all Apostles pray for us. St. Paul, pray for us. Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, enlighten us and strengthen us against the wiles of the enemy. Purify our hearts. Fill them with love for You and for our neighbor.
The Chapel can seat approximately 300 and with use of the Museum wing can accomodate almost a 100 more. It is anticipated to be packed at the first Mass on Palm Sunday! The number of people interested in the Traditional Latin Mass is growing. Many who come, fall in love with this “Forma Extradinaria” almost immediately.
“small number” reminds me of the Pope-Emeritus’ “smaller, holier Church”.
Not so crowded that way, Rodda. Have fun at your glass shrine in Anaheim; maybe Disneyland will incorporate it as they expand.
Its a Start. Mustard Seed.
Thank you, Archbishop Gomez.
And thank you to all those who have kept learning Latin so we can have such Masses.
With a grateful heart and a big thank you to Bishop Gomez, Father Preston, Una Voce, and the hard working committed St. Mary Magdalen community!
I primarily attend a very reverent Novus Ordo mass…but enjoy attending the Tridentine mass as well. I have a 1962 missal, which allows me to follow the readings and prayers of the TLM with no problem, there may come a time when I attend the TLM almost exclusively, either form helps me to work on “saving my soul” and spiritually feeding myself with the sacrament of “Holy Communion”.
I attended the Palm Sunday mass and it was well attended by all age groups. A true delight!
