4 Days in December. Dec. 9th, Feast of Juan Diego.
“The Virgin first appeared to Juan Diego at dawn on Saturday, Dec. 9th, 1531 when he took a short cut over the top of Tepeyac hill, to save time, being late on his daily journey to Mass. She instructed him to advise the bishop to build a chapel at the site in her honor.
Of course, the encounter with the bishop was not a success. The second apparition occurred later the same day when, on his way home, he explained the Bishop was not convinced. The Virgin at this meeting urged him to be more persistent, and the next morning after Sunday Mass, Dec. 10th, he was able to meet again with the Franciscan bishop Juan Zumarraga, but the bishop requested some “sign” to…
…to evidence the apparitions. “
Juan Diego had been keeping an 8-day Octave, starting from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which had already been extended to the universal Church by Sixtus IV in the late 1400’s. Possibly his main intention was the gravely ill uncle for whom he was helping to provide care.
“The next day, Dec. 11th, Juan Diego was detained, caring for his now-dying uncle, and he was unable to make his customary journey to morning Mass. However,by the early morning of Dec. 12th, he was compelled to set out to obtain a priest to come to give his uncle the last rites. ” This is part of the background to the story of “Roses in December.”
Fr. Michael Carcerano is a Los Angeles Diocesan Priest and very Holy person. Another good call by Archbishop Gomez. Hopefully they can transition to sung mass every Sunday instead of only on second Sunday. Low (mostly silent) mass, unfortunately, does not quite fulfill the spirit of our age.
As I recall from the long ago reaches of foggy memory, at a low Mass, one could not hear 90% of the Priest’ s prayers. I thought a major part of the ‘majesty’ of a Latin Mass was the classical music and ,if one wishes, ‘smells and bells’.
I too pray that sung Masses are available for those who prefer that equally valid form of the Roman rite.
485 years ago today, in the early morning of Dec. 12th, 1531, the Blessed Virgin arranged, mysteriously, “Roses of Castile” on the tilma of Juan Diego—roses found blooming on the top of a lava-bed strewn rocky outcropping, in December—at about 7500′ altitude.
After her mysterious re-arranging of the roses Juan Diego had picked, he set out on his trek to see the Franciscan bishop of Mexico City, Fray Juan Zumarraga. And the rest is history.
