The following comes from a March 7 Crux article by Michael O’Loughlin:
LOS ANGELES – Tens of thousands of Catholics descend on Los Angeles each winter to sharpen their ministry skills, partaking in dozens of workshops and seminars about liturgy, prayer, Bible, and parish life as part of the LA Religious Education Congress. With close to 40,000 participants, it’s the largest annual gathering of Catholics in North America, a celebration of all things Catholic.
But event organizers this year took a cue from popular culture and included a new session, one that attracted a standing room only crowd of 750 people, nearly all of whom jumped to their feet for a sustained round of applause after talks from two young, committed Catholics.
The name of the session? “Transgender in the Church: One Bread, One Body.”
The Rev. Christopher Bazyouros, the director of the office of religious education for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, said including the discussion in the program was an important first step for the Church in grappling with an issue that exploded onto the national consciousness last June when Caitlyn Jenner appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, announcing to the world that she is transgender.
“There aren’t many places for Catholics to discuss these things that are thoughtful, intentional, and that gathers people who have had this experience,” he said. “Many Catholics want information about this topic, they want things to help them understand this situation.”
To that end, conference organizers invited two transgender Catholics to speak, both of whom were surprised and gratified that they were included. And both used their presentations to urge acceptance by the wider universe of Catholics.
Anna Patti, a 23-year-old Michigan resident, told the crowd she didn’t believe “God made a mistake” with her, as some have said of transgender people.
In an interview after her presentation, she said having the opportunity to speak freely about her struggles and her joys was “an unexpectedly affirming experience.”
“I hadn’t realized how silenced I felt within the Church,” she said. “At Mass I always sit in the back row in the back corner, making myself as visibly small as possible. Here was the opposite, where people wanted to learn about an issue that is so often immediately condemned.”
“It was beautiful,” she said of the crowd’s reaction.
Mateo Williamson, a 24-year-old medical student at the Jesuit-run Loyola Medical School in Chicago, described with joy his deeply Catholic upbringing, part of a family that included several priests and nuns.
After his talk, he said many young people thanked him for sharing his story about living as a transgender man in the Church.
“Pope Francis’ charity, compassion, and call to mercy, it’s changed the tone in the Church,” he said. “He hasn’t been explicit about trans people, and there’s nothing in the Catechism, but there’s been a change among people in general to understand something they maybe haven’t encountered before.”
Pope Francis has spoken out repeatedly against so-called gender ideology, but Patti said she doesn’t interpret those comments as hostile to trans people.
In fact, she thinks the pope’s remarks about gender not being just a social construct actually support the transgender community by pointing out that gender identity is innate.
The LA Congress workshop sold out quickly, and some of the audience, which included several priests, seminarians, and nuns, said the fact it happened at all gave them hope about the future of the Church.
Arthur FitzMaurice, who speaks frequently about LGBT issues in the Church and who organized the workshop, said he believes it was the largest discussion devoted to transgender issues and Catholicism in the Church’s history. He said that organizers have already asked him to plan a similar workshop next year.
Ah yes, I can see all of the hoopla about when Archbishop Gomez was coming to replace Mahony all would be fixed and Orthodoxy would return to LA because Gomez was from Opus Dei. Well if you took a look at the gathering last week it was the usual garbage and heretics dancing around in silk and giant puppets, effeminate men prancing around the “table” as I call it, because an an altar it is not! This looks it does every year a Roman pagan celebration, Roman yes, CATHOLIC not in a million years folks!!! Another reason guys I will defend the TLM until my last breath.
Janek, I went to the Catholic Encyclopedia to find out about “high altars.” Interesting info. The high altar is the “main” altar in a church. At one time the bishops cathedra was behind the altar on the back wall. The altar was between him and the congregation. In more recent time the bishop’s chair was placed on the side wall on the Gospel side and the altar was moved back. An altar against the back wall is a tradition only a few hundred years old. Today, the altar is back where it use to be. Is it a table? Of course! That is what an altar is. Is it used for sacrifice? Of course, that what an altar is for. So, the altar on the riser in the middle of the sanctuary is still the “high altar.”
Bob One– the modern, “table-style” altar, moved in front of Catholic High Altars after Vatican II (a retrofit for the Novus Ordo Mass!) is very different! It resembles the altars found in some Protestant churches– in which also, there is no belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and their rituals of the Last Supper, are viewed as only a historical memorial! The traditional Catholic High Altar was placed near the East wall ( all Catholic churches used to face East!) and the altar contained relics of saints. You can walk in back of a High Altar, as the altar-consecrating Bishop does. The priest always faced God, at Mass! Well, that’s all– no more space!
Linda Maria, all altars contain relics. Placing them in the altar is part of the consecrating/blessing ritual for a new altar. I remember, for example, that we had an “altar stone containing a relic, that had to be carried on overnight hikes with the Scouts so that the priest-chaplain could say mass every day. Also, you should update your information on what other denominations believe about communion.
…actually you should understand that there is no belief in the Real Presence in Protestant sects, Bob One. What you have just revealed is your modern education that requires folks to not recognize the disparity in beliefs and pretend they’re the same. Kind of like Islam being a peaceful religion.
What DO other denominations believe about the Real Presence? As far as I know, only some brands of Lutherans and the Orthodox believe in the Real Presence, Bob One. All others believe that it is merely symbolic.
Bb One, the “altar stone” you are referring to, in your Scouting trips, is the true altar, and it has five crosses, plus the relics. It is sometimes moveable– but is always encased in Catholic High Altars, and was a requirement for Mass, before Vatican II. After the Council, relics and the altar stone were no longer required, as some relics could not be authenticated. The Protestant-style “table altars” were moved in and placed in front of our High Altars, for the Novus Ordo Mass, because the priest turns to face the people– not God. And no Protestant churches believe in the Real Presence, as we do.
Sorry, Bob One– but due to time and space limits in these posts, I typed too fast, and your first name in your moniker, was misspelled!
Wow, actually Lutherans and (i think) Episcopaleans beleive in the true presence. Certainly also the Orthodox and the Eastern Catholics do too.
Altars were only slammed up against a wall in the last 400 years or so. Even Protestants followed that historical meme.
There is no altar slammed up against a wall at ST Peter’s, for example. Or any Church in Rome, for that matter.
The Wow, actually, is that non-Catholics believe that the bread becomes Christ because you believe – in memorium. Not because the bread and wine are actually transformed into the Real Presence. That is a big difference, YFC, and that is why pretending differences don’t exist is to lie.
“Wow, actually Lutherans and (i think) Episcopaleans beleive in the true presence” Uh no they don’t …..
Ann Malley, you are incorrect. Lutherans believe that during the consecration Christ is really and truly present in the Eucharistic species. However, Lutheran theology is closer to con-substantiation than tran-substantiation, the former is heretical in the Roman Church. But that does not negate their belief in the real presence. I’ll let those who have direct knowledge of other sects speak to them. But I know Lutheranism quite well, and you are quite incorrect.
Ann – I understand that the Anglicans belive in real presence until the congregation disburses after it has the host becomes ordinary bread.
Luther wrote in his Small Chatechism, one of the foundational documents of Lutheranism: “It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, under the bread and wine, for us Christians to eat and to drink, instituted by Christ Himself.”
Lutherans in other documents and in their liturgy claim a belief in the real presence over and over again. Occasionally Lutheran parishes reserve the sacrament in a tabernacle, and genuflect in order to recognize the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. As I’ve said elsewhere they believe that he is really and truly present in with and under the bread and wine. Not transubstantiation, mind you, closer to con substantiation.
Please remember that when the pastors andl deacons give the host to the parishioner they say “The Body’s of Christ, Broken for You” and the communicant says, “amen” “The Blood of Christ, shed for You”, response is again “amen”. And after everyone has received, is commended “may the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ and his precious Blood bring you to life everlasting”. Response: amen
Lex Orandi lex credendi amon( Lutherans. By the way often kneeling at an altar rail!
Pass the Koolaid.
Janek, I agree! I only think that Christ wants all of us to treat one another with equal love and respect. I am sure you would agree! I think it is also a mistake, for people with disorders and illnesses that are major, to be entering fields such as medicine (like the 24-year-old Mateo Williamson) — it is too serious a vocation! Sick and dying patients really need NORMALCY in their doctors, and others helping them! GOOD CHRISTIAN MORALS are also essential, to all Catholic “LGBT’S” — otherwise, they need a priest, to guide them to a mature Catholic life. I will NEVER attend a FARCE like the L.A. “Religious” Ed. Congress– and I once told Mahoney so, to his face!
Amen, Janek!
The CCD congress has been a major scandal since the early 1970’s. Most of the speakers hated Pope John Paul II and termed him a ‘stupid old Pollack; This was in the early 80’s. This congress is the left wing of the Democrat party. Basically it is a teaching method to dismantle the faith. No good has come out of this gathering except that Disneyland forbid it to be held on their hotel grounds because of drunken and disorderly conduct. Ave Maria Purrissima !
I really don’t believe you when you say that speakers at this Catholic convening or any others ever called Saint John Paul a “stupid old Pollack”. Never ever have I heard that. People from the left AND the right were happy to have a non-Roman pope. They recognize his important contribution to free Poland and Eastern Europe from the grip of Soviet Communism. And his youthful vigor, until the late 90s when his infirmities crept up, were an amazing contrast to the older popes who preceded him. So no, I don’t believe you. Sorry. No truthiness in what you are saying.
Jesusita, what you say is untrue. Each year the congress draws 40,000 catechist who want to learn how to do their work better. Review the workshop offerings and the fantastic liturgies that they offer. People go there to learn from all over the world. Bishops and Cardinals are frequent guests and speakers. That would not happen year after year without the help of the Holy Spirit working among the people.
Bob One, Next, you’ll be saying, that Woodstock was guided by the Holy Spirit. Crowd numbers, do not mean faithfulness. The same compromising and corrupt leadership that helped to usher in the sex abuse scandals is very pleased to still pretend that it is crowd numbers that means faithfulness. How many people remained at the foot of the Cross with Jesus? There is your answer… only a few. If it was large crowd numbers that meant faithfulness and holiness, then Our Lord would have never said this:
Luke 18:[8] I say to you, that he will quickly revenge them. But yet the Son of man, when he cometh, shall he find, think you, faith on earth? – Douay-Rheims
….but what precisely is being learned is the question, Bob One. There is foretold in scripture a great apostasy:
“…And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound the love of many shall wax cold. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
Thankfully there are those who know what the Catholic Church actually believes and teaches in Her doctrine. That is how the Church, over time, is protected from the great, amazing fun festivals offered by those who would dazzle with “fantastic” liturgies and the like.
Anonymous– Jesusita is correct! The L.A. Religious Ed. Congress is a TOTAL DISASTER of REBELLIOUS “Catholics,” who DO AS THEY PLEASE!! They are NOT religious, by any stretch of the imagination– and yup– many, over the years– hated the Pope! They are not too interested, either, in foreign politics of Poland and Eastern Europe. So what?? They just want a “good time,” a “good trendy, hip party,” and all the latest, in American liberalism, and pop culture!
ok, keep pretending it’s just fine to create alternate realities that don’t refelct what really goes on. Go ahead! Have at it! Pretend and make up stories all you want!
Encouraging Catholic Youth to abuse Steroids or Hormones foreign to their Immutable Inherited Scientifically Proven Gender – is Rong!.
There are Only 2 Genders: Woman=xx & Man=xy.
Heterosexual Procreation Is the sole source for Human Reproduction, and genetic/gestational birth defects do not alter this. Their victims deserve compassion, but the conditions don’t create new genders…
And neither do the various fetishes of the Gaystapo Thought Police, although they do so enjoy forcing linear straight types to jump through their flaming hoops – or face firing

You are confusing biological sex and gender here.
It’s simple. Sexual differentiation is a biological device for maintaining genetic diversity.
Gender is the cultural aspect of sex; societal roles and expectations, ideals, standards of beauty, behavioral mores, etc. These are as fluid culture itself. They do not remain constant between different eras or populations.
Gender expression is irrelevant to Christian morality. The only moral component to it at all is in the immorality of those who use creative and reaching biblical interpretations to justify hate and violence.
How do such a tiny minority of depraved fanatics get such
raw Power over those who reject their sick hatreds & vile 0perversions? They vote for Demi-kratz or RINO$

There was a time when LGBT activists wanted the government out of their bedrooms. Now they not only want the government in their bedrooms, they want it in their bathrooms too!
That much has been clear from the explosion of gender-neutral bills across local communities, school boards, and state legislatures. As soon as one ordinance fails, another pops up to take its place.
In areas like New York City, officials aren’t even bothering with the semblance of democracy…
Um NO, we want government out of our bedrooms and our bathrooms. People, from time to time, need to pee. Is that too much to ask?
YFC, so you claim to be an activist or participant ? I will pray for you, again.
Bless you, Michael McDermott! We need to re-establish American society, on its correct, original foundations! Get rid of the immoral, anti-American, anti-Christian, anti-Traditional Marriage, Home and Family, dangerously destructive social activists, and place all the sick “LGBT” psychiatric patients under correct medical care, for their illnesses and disorders!
‘Lord, should we call down fire from heaven?”.
No such thing as transgender, except in the imagination.
John Patrick, you haven’t been there, so how would you know about imagination? Is it possible that a Christian would/could find compassion to listen to the journeys of others?
First, all you wanted was to be left alone. Next, all you wanted was to have sodomy de-criminalized. Next, you wanted the same treatment as normal people, hospital visitation Etc. Then, you attacked the institution of marriage by insisting upon calling your mockery of the ancient rite “marriage.” and forced those administering that ceremony to participate in that mockery. Man and Man do not a marriage make, Woman and Woman do not either. I have no compassion for your “imagination”, wether it encompasses homosexuality, transgenderism or homosexual “Marriage.”
LGBT people want the full respect and dignity that is owed them, even according to the teachings of the catholic church.
Your position that there is not such thing as homosexuality or transgenderism is NOT the teaching of the Church, which clearly states in Catechism, which clearly states that although the causes are unknown, it nontheless affects a not insignificant number of people. Why would the catechism say such a thing if it were simply a matter of imagination?
There is no dignity in sexual perversion, full stop. It is merely degrading and disgusting. I am convinced that the position taken in the catechism was driven not by compassion, but by the large numbèr of homosexuals that have infiltrated our Holy Church. Mortal sin leads to spiritual death and unrepentant homosexuality, as our Holy Church infallibly teaches, is mortal sin.
Knowingly Transmitting STDs Should be a Crime
Preventing spread of Physically Harmful, Pathological – Treatment Resistant Disease via ‘Anal / Coprophile’ Behaviors –

Mirroring Anti-Smoking campaigns (though the media Censors POTUS Barry Soetoro’s Cigarette Habit) – Might better help Prevent such Harms, if not Crimes.

YFC,no it is not possible for a Christian to have compassion for evil ,,,purge the Church of sexual anarchist filth….
Being transgender is not evil. Good for the folks who organized the session for opening up an important conversation,
“YFC” ,there is no such thing as being “transgender”, it is impossible. These people are confused and deceived and pandering to them at a Church sponsored event is cruel. The important conversation is how to get all souls to heaven.
Canisius and Kristin, you speak with such confidence, you’d think you actually had some professional association with transgender people. I’ll bet you don’t. I’ll bet you make up your assertions out of your own inflated sense of superior morality.
If you were really interested in getting souls to heaven, you would reach out with compassion to people you don’t understand, rather than condemning them with the force of hell right from the get-go.
If transgenderism is not evil, it is a conduit for evil. It probably causes more unhappiness than anything. A family member who strove for years to afford a ” sex change” was so unhappy and regretful with the result that suicide was the only way out.
YFC fear of the force of Hell can save a lot of souls not false compassion by giving a wink and nod to perversions. And yes I am morally superior to these perverts I have never once demand the Church accept my sins as lifestyle “choice”…
YFC, I just can’t agree. Modern psychiatry seems to agree that gender “dysmorphia” [most of it based on the now thoroughly discredited “findings” of psychologist John Money @ Johns Hopkins—which no longer allows transgender surgery, by the way] is a psychiatric disorder. Maybe a psychosis—like a guy believing he’s a canary.
Caritas, It doesn’t matter how many facts you present to YFC he a fanatical sexual anarchist, to him if it feels good, do it…
Is this journey your own and please explain why it is we should listen. From the sounds of it you enjoy and endorse this style of journey that the church teaches to be sinful.
If the fish stinks, it is because of the head.
The fish stinks!
BTW – Although the CDC itself falls in to various PC Pronoun Traps, it does identify the Most Disease Prone segments of the GILBERT Gang:
Tansgender communities in the United States are among the groups at highest risk for HIV infection.
https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/group/gender/transgender/index.html
Because data for this population are not uniformly collected… local health departments and scientists studying these communities show high levels of HIV infection and racial/ethnic disparities.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 2010) reported that the highest percentage of newly identified HIV-positive test results was among transgender people…
– estimated that HIV prevalence for transgender women was nearly 50…
My son and daughter, who were CCD teachers were forced to attend these heretical gatherings, and they both heard the speaker say harsh things about Pope John Paul II, telling the audience that he came from a backward country, and that his mentality was shaped by his peasant Polish heritage. The speaker also said mean things about Ronald Reagan, so these congresses are oftentimes more political than spiritual. Ave Maria Purrissima !
“From a backwards country”..Hmmmm…. the right wing economics people say the same thing about Francis.
Yes and Left wing economics people have been such a blessing to this once great republic…
Given Social Security (FDR) and Medicare (LBJ) , I would agree.
You will not agree when both of those programs will be bankrupt in about 10 years…frankly C&H i know better what to do with my money than Washington bureaucrats… I always found it interesting that the cry of the liberals has been get the government out our bedrooms , but you want them to deep into your medical and retirement decisions.
fine, please give back your social security since you think they mismanaged it so much. You don’t need the government to write checks to you anymore, since you are such a good money manager. You’ve already taken out more in ss checks and your veterans health care than you ever put in. So give it back!
Anon for insanity I am still paying into so your presumptions are wrong and I can’t collect for over 20 years..and I pay for my own health care.. would not trust those ghouls at the VA .
I plead with Archbishop Gomez to read some of the websites of those who have had so-called sex change operations and have regretted them. He needs also to read what John Hopkins Hospital, which first did such operations, says about why they stopped doing them. Some persons are born with an actual genital defect which needs correction, but all else is nothing but bodily mutilation. Bruce Jenner is still Bruce Jenner, only now mutilated, and shown with a lot make up and touched up photos. Please young people do not copy his sad example.
