The following comes from a September 19 Renew America article by Matt C. Abbott:
It appears that officials of Brophy College Preparatory, a Jesuit high school in Phoenix, Arizona and part of the California Province of the Society of Jesus, aren’t too bothered by “Catholic” Tim Kaine’s support for legalized abortion and same-sex “marriage.”
But they are bothered by an alumnus who recently pointed out on the school’s Facebook page – under a post featuring a USA Today column that highlighted Mr. Kaine’s Jesuit education – that the Democratic vice presidential nominee supports the killing of the unborn.
In an email to me that copied Brophy officials, Eric J. Halvorson wrote:
After reading the piece in its entirety, I proceeded to enter a comment to the effect that ‘Mr. Kaine may be a ‘man for others’; however, he is not a man for the unborn’ – based on his public record and especially with whom he’s running: Hillary Clinton. I then signed my name and stated that I was an ’84 alum.
Several minutes later, I was sent a message by the Brophy Facebook manager requesting that I refrain from making ‘political’ comments on the school’s page. I responded saying that my comments were not intended to be of a political, but rather a religious, nature speaking directly to the sanctity of life. I admittedly was terse toward the end of my response by stating to the manager that they might want to refresh their knowledge on this specific Catholic social teaching.
Well, later that afternoon, I discovered that as a result of my position and response, the manager had essentially banned me from the school’s page. Basically, Brophy ‘unliked’ me and will no longer let me be one of its Facebook ‘fans.’
Now I completely understand and realize that it’s not my First Amendment right to comment on Brophy’s Facebook page. I get that. I also get that Brophy has the right to control and monitor all content and comments on its page. However, Mr. Abbott, as a second generation Brophy alum, this really left me numb and with a horrible taste in my mouth. It made me sad as well.
Just days ago, the Church and Pope Francis made Mother Teresa of Calcutta a Catholic saint. I cannot think of another human in the history of mankind who modeled, exemplified and lived the seven themes of Catholic social teaching – especially the theme ‘Life and Dignity of the Human Person,’ as well as Saint Teresa did. Added to this, she was very outwardly vocal about her defense of the unborn.
Yet the perception I was left with is that Brophy is OK with featuring and celebrating Mr. Kaine’s Jesuit education experience and service to others despite his public record on abortion.
I have found in my 50 years on this earth as a Roman Catholic that the sanctity of life for many millions of American Catholics (and I include so many Jesuit priests as well) has now become passé and a pick-and-choose exercise. They have caved in to the secular pressure of the ‘pro-choice’ crowd.
Now, in this country, even in many Catholic circles such as Brophy’s, one is considered to be a pro-life ‘freak’ or ‘radical’ if one even dares to bring up protecting the innocent unborn. One is now scorned and banned in American Catholic circles if one discusses the unborn.
Brophy is not a “Catholic circle.” Great that Halvorson called out Brophy, but his subsequent comments show a disappointing naivete about the perverted “Catholicism” of Jesuit schools, high schools and colleges alike, as well as the Jesuits themselves. But that’s how it works. The Jesuit schools corrupt the minds of their students, who later become alumni. Halvorson at least shows himself to be less corrupted than the majority of graduates who apparently see nothing wrong with the entire platform of the Democratic party.
If I was this gentleman in the story, I would contact the Bishop….would that not be Bishop Olmstead? If so, he is the REAL DEAL and I would think he would not be happy!
So SAD that the Jesuits are definately on the wrong path. Something needs to be done to their order!!
Jesuits are sadly uncontrollable– they do as they wish, with their evils, worldwide! No one can stop them, or any similar DEVIANT, IMMORAL Catholic religious order, due to the so-called “freedoms” enshrined in Vatican II! Horrible! Faithless to Christ!
And who would wonder, as a Jesuit high school and university grad, why one would NOT choose a pseudonym.
Usually, the sad fact is that someone will complain to your CEO at your job and you have to handle all that nonsense.
The secular atheist left, which permeates Catholic institutions, is not “nice.”
Father Joe Devlin SJ, who helped re-open Brophy in 1952, after its closure during the Great Depression, was TRULY a “Man for Others.” Not just talk – talk is cheap. He lived in abject squalor as a missionary in Vietnam during the war there. He helped the “Boat People” in Thailand and many, many of the Vietnamese refugees here in California. Fr. Joe would be heartbroken over this story. Father Joe Devlin, pray for us.
Well said anne. o: Fr. Joseph Devlin, SJ (and his brother “Rocket Ray” Fr. Raymond Devlin) were extraordinary Jesuits who saved the lives of countless Viet refugees, most of them Catholics whose lives would have been liquidated under “Father Ho”.
They assisted people well into their 80’s and their loss is still felt. Fr. Ray, who survived his brother, used to generously hear confessions round the clock at Our Lady of Peace Shrine in Santa Clara, and was an outstanding spiritual father to countless Catholics. (He was called “Rocket Ray” because he was an outstanding track and football star in high school, but also he was always on the move.)
Amen! May Fr. Joe Devlin rest in peace, and his brother Ray too.
Sadly, the school is defending an apostate Catholic who supports abortion.
Of course the Jesuits there will do this. All totalitarians cannot abide the light of opposition, even debate, to mar their earthly paradise. Tim Kaine is a Catholic anathema. His praise is a scandal to all Catholics. The school should lose its Catholic identity. Where is the bishop?
Where is any bishop? There are trash Jesuit colleges and high schools all over the country and every one of them has ridiculous Catholic identity issues. But no Jesuit school is going to get reprimanded when the bishop answers to a Jesuit pope. Come to think of it, none of them got reprimanded before there was Jesuit pope, either.
Have you had any first hand experience with the school? Never in my experience have they been anything but pro life. I was shocked at many of the comments regarding this topic. Then I read similar comments about the Pope. Wow. No wonder noncatholics run the other direction.
….it is no wonder. Time to get the house in order, Anonymous, with Catholics embracing the Catholic Faith. Starting from the top down. No “making a mess” or shinnying around the truth to make friends with that which is not friendly to Christian faith and morals.
Good thing you had the opportunity to get a listen to others experiences.
Well II guess your “experience” is now expanded to include some pro-death ideology at the school. Noncatholics run the other direction? Who cares, they’ve been finding convenient excuses since Martin Luther. The problem is baptized Catholics who see no difference between Amchurch and protestant alternatives, and either wander away or see a protestantized Church as license to stay as dissenting nominal Catholics and do as they please.
Well, then: I have a fair bit of experience with Brophy Prep: no, not “all” of their educators, parents, or administrators are against the pro-life cause, but there is a strong laissez-faire view about actively supporting it. (There are 1 or 2 exceptions) But if you mention “it,” you will get “The Look”.
There is a silence and unsupportiveness by many (not all) key lay people and Jesuits of the cause, a definite discomfort; and especially look to the top. After all, that is where this censorship originated re. the Brophy Facebook site.
For most Jesuits, protecting the unborn is too controversial. And also remember, “qui tacit consentire”: “silence gives consent.”
CLINTON and Tim Kaine are dangerous. Clinton is AGAINST Freedom of Religion.
The next Pres of the USA will select the next Supreme Court Justices and Federal Judges that will affect the USA for years to come.
” Hillary Clinton: Make Christians Change Their Religious Views to Support Abortion ” – https://www.lifenews.com/2016/08/08/hillary-clinton-make-christians-change-their-religious-views-to-support-abortion/
The 2016 National DEMOCRAT Party Platform’s goal is to repeal the Hyde Amendment so that all taxpayers will pay for abortion at any stage of development for any reason.
I probably shouldn’t call attention to the Facebook comment above of Ms. Mary Keller, but her demonizing is classic:
“…comments from the angry Brophy alumni seemed riddled with hatred. It could be his ego and feeling of superiority is at the root of his aggression toward Brophy…”
You see, if you point out, as here, within a lot of Brophy circles, there is a disdain for the pro-life movement, you are “riddled with hatred,” have “ego-problems”, and “aggression” issues. Ms Keller is however brimming with understanding and charity. Thank you, Ms Keller, thank you. Exactly why people should avoid Brophy and its political-correct atmosphere: you couldn’t have displayed it better, tho unwittingly so.
…
By the way, Ms Keller, I am sure that the young men are getting a wonderful traditional Catholic view point on sexuality, and esp. the Church’s position against homosexual relations. Ask Fr. Lou for any clarification, if needed.
Mr. Champion….is that your real name or are you afraid to use your own. Have you ever been at Brophy? I am pro life, and not ever felt like a freak for being so while at Brophy. The information presented is not accurate ( at least in the last seven years of my experience ) The point I made earlier and was accused of many inaccuracies was that the problem with abortion starts long before a women shows up at an abortion clinic, and some of us prefer to work on the front end. I have never felt like my own sons catholic faith and prolife stance has been anything but supported at Brophy. In fact I can remember a conversation with my own son six years ago while attending Brophy during his planning to March for life organized by the staff. He…
[Disclaimer: I don’t read or respond to Anonymous or other hit-piece posts:
( I assume their content from the title and am usually right.)’
Brophy Prep has had a small student group for life for some years, but that isn’t the point of Abbott’s story. Good for them.
However, I never knew of [former president for 20 yrs] Fr. Edward Reese, SJ, attending their functions or Bp. Olmsted’s occasional recitation of the Rosary at Planned Parenthood’s clinic. (In fact I would be very surprised if Fr. Ed owns a Rosary.)
Once people like Fr. John Becker, Fr. Gene Growney, Fr. Marc Calegari (who was the pro-life chaplain for many activities in the state of AZ) and others passed away, the school continued its drift into its…
..present state of comfortable secular-atheism. Don’t ask about Marian devotion, Eucharistic adoration, Christ’s redemptive sacrifice, cultic priesthood, or any of that “nonsense” either. Blank or uncomfortable stare back atcha.
Fr. Reese’s big legacy at Brophy? Building the Eller Center for Arts, the Piper Science Center, several other edifices, and getting $85 million in endowment funding for the Broph. I am sure Christ will be pleased at his day of reckoning. After all, Christ was all about big buildings and $$$.
Very good. The point also needs to be made to Anonymous (I won’t ask if that’s a real name), that pro-life clubs only exist at schools that aren’t pro-life.
Mary Keller writes, “If we all loved first without judgement like I believe our role as Christians should be, probably these abortion clinics would close for lack of business.”
Mary Keller certainly did not love first without judgement or show kindness to the honorable gentleman who took the time to defend the unborn. Mary Keller judged him as acting superior for simply stating the truth. Mary Keller even wrote, “It could be his ego and feeling of superiority is at the root of his aggression toward Brophy.” That is not very Christian. Mary Keller could not even practice what she is preaching in her response. continued….
.
continued..
I’m sure, that Mary would not like to, unfairly read, that the root of her use of broad brush aggression, towards, even good men, stems from a feeling of inferiority for having been once jilted or wounded by someone she loved. Does Mary Keller know that’s how she sounds? Or, should we not judge Mary, like she is judging all men. This noble gentleman did something good and here we have Mary Keller angrily blaming him for all open abortion mills. Sadly, Mary Kelly is wrong. There are many women who choose to kill their unborn babies even though they have always been nurtured and loved. I’ve met them in PP parking lots AND before they arrived there. continued…

Their families nurtured and loved them. The fathers of their babies loved them and the men are still standing right next to them trying to talk them out of it. I still remember one young woman telling me that she had always hated children and this was no big deal. She said she was nurtured at home and loved by her family, offered everything in the form of help and assistance. The father of the baby did not want her to abort his baby even though he was a married man. continued….
.
Yes, Mary Keller, R.N., nurtured women still freely choose to commit adultery and then coldly walk in to callously terminate a 6 month pregnancy. So, instead, of shooting the messenger, I want to thank and commend, this good and caring gentleman, who showed great leadership by taking the time out of his busy life, to truly NURTURE the world and the blogosphere with the much needed truth.
A women can’t just walk in and have an abortion when she is 6th months pregnant. Perhaps you know this good man who wanted to keep the baby? The man that was married to someone else? Your comments make no sense. I find it difficult to believe that a women who has been raised in love, hates children and gets pregnant from a married man. This “nobel Gentleman” you speak of might need a back ground check. While as a Catholic I actually wouldn’t vote for someone that supports abortion, that doesn’t mean the other life work, of Tim Kaine like leading trade schools to help with joblessness in third world countries, using his Harvard Law degree to help the poor and disabled have fair housing is not commendable. Did you ever think about…
“…I find it difficult to believe that a women who has been raised in love, hates children and gets pregnant from a married man.”
What you believe has zero to do with it, Anonymous. That said, Cecile Richards, head of Planned Parenthood admitted to aborting one of her own children even though she and her husband and family were already apparently happy and well suited to support another child.
The reason Cecile snuffed the life of her poor child is that she didn’t want to be interrupted in the balance of her life.
So again, what you “imagine” has zero to do with reality. Did you ever think about that? I doubt it.
God bless you, Ann Malley! You are absolutely right! Anonymous also can’t imagine that even today after all of the love that Jesus Christ showed to his beloved apostles, many of today’s bishops have snuffed out the fullness of truth and are also still fast asleep, so they have also abandoned Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. May their hearts and minds be converted before it is too late, when finding themselves facing Almighty God as cowards and mute dogs. May God bless our faithful bishops and priests who stay close to Christ and faithfully shepherd His sheep.
The “nobel gentleman” is the “honorable man” in the story above, who wrote the truthful comments in the Brophy Facebook.
Ann Malley, A young woman at our parish telephoned me and she told me her roommate had a scheduled appointment for (the following weekend) to have a late term abortion. Her roommate was 6 month pregnant. This young woman from our parish then asked me if I would come to their apartment to speak with this 23 year old pregnant woman.

The young woman who called me was scared to make this roommate angry at her so I asked her to get permission from the pregnant roommate to allow me come and talk. The pregnant woman said yes. I went that very same evening to meet this woman at their apartment. I spent at least 4 hours with her. Even though it was her good and caring roommate who called, I absolutely credit the Blessed Mother for arranging this appointment. The 6 months pregnant woman told me that she grew up watching her now deceased grandmother pray the rosary every day. She had very loving memories of her upbringing and family.

continued..
I let this pregnant mother know that I was there because the Blessed Mother remembered all of those rosaries prayed by her grandmother. I also let her know how much God and the Blessed Mother loved her and her unborn baby. This woman was offered every kind of loving opportunity of help and assistance and it was then that she told me that she had always hated children. She even said, “Oh it’s no big deal. I might feel uncomfortable for a day or so but then I’ll be just fine.” She was firm in her resolve to terminate the life of this baby. The adulterous father of the baby was not asking her to have the abortion either.
continued….
continued..
Every loving base was covered. Every generous mercy was offered to her. My final plea for this death sentenced baby was in asking her what she thought of me and everything I had said to her. She responded, I think your a lovely and good person to take the time to come and talk. So then I asked her if she would please allow me to care for the baby for however long she needed the help and that she could have her baby at any time, because she would surely fall in love with this baby. That’s when she gave that chilling response, about hating children.
continued
continued.
I left that apartment sensing that God had allowed me to witness this frightening new generation of coldness and callous rejection of God, along with His tender and merciful love. It reminded me of the statement, “God sends no one to hell, they choose it!” Yes, Ann Malley, this woman was “comfortable” with killing a six month old unborn baby in her own womb.
continued….

The following weekend my husband and I attended a wedding. It was very hard to celebrate a wedding knowing full well, that at the very same time, this little helpless baby was being mercilessly slaughtered by the choice of his or her own mother, for the sake of hatred and inconvenience. I liken, this true story, to all of the generous mercies, that God and His Blessed Mother, offer to each and every one of us on a daily basis, and especially, when watching, his most beloved leading shepherds “snuff out” His Truths in exchange for unmerciful lies.
Speechless. Thank you, Catherine.
How much longer dear God will you put up with the rebellion of unholy abortion? Please dear God, help everybody see how it destroys society ways we cannot fully comprehend. We have a great chance for a pro-choice. pro-religious freedom candidate this election VS a pro-death, anti-religion zealot. But because nothing is perfect on this side of heaven, people are being mislead on purpose to look at the pro-life man’s many flaws VS his goodness. I fear many good christians will sit this election out. We will lose the supreme court & federal courts for many. many years by our own quest for perfection………….
Continued………Dear God, help us to see past human flaws to the solid spiritual base we so desperately need. God be with the pro-life candidates. Help us see past the confusion created on purpose by the opposition. Help us to see past the distractions used to blur our spiritual focus. Help us to help ourselves & end unholy abortion now with the help of an imperfect man that is pro-life, pro-religious freedoms and pro-America. God HELP us! Praying.

An expert on education says the transgender movement is asking the American public to accept fiction rather than reality.
A man who thinks of himself as a woman and wants to transition to a woman is suffering a mental disorder called gender dysphoria, and specially trained psychotherapists have a good track record in helping individuals with that disorder align with their born gender. Dan Guernsey, director of K-12 programs for the Cardinal Newman Society –
is called moral relativism, and it is a problem for society at large. He adds that one of the biggest mistakes society is making on the issue is allowing transgendered people to teach in…
For Sooooo Long the Demi-Krat party was a haven for Catholics in a very hostile nation, and the lingering effect of that affinity has SSADLY backfired in support for people like H. Rodham and Kaine and the Klintonistas.
Trump may have many faults, but being Anti-Catholic is not amongst them – unlike the ‘take no prisoners. Klintonistas.
T. Kaine = catholic in name only (cino)
T. Kaine = global socialist elite sycophant
T. Kaine = supports killing the un-born
T. Kaine = supports gay ‘marriage’
T. Kaine = a walking, talking scandal for catholics
T. Kaine = calls himself ‘devout’ but is a cafeteria catholic

T. Kaine and his running mate support unholy Sodom & Gomorrah. Here is what they and their ilk bring down on all of us by that unholy support for sinful behavior.

Pro-abortion Brophy College Preparatory is obviously an anti-Catholic school!
The late Fr. Harry Olivier, SJ (d. 2015), a wonderful Jesuit educator and priest at Brophy for many years, once was engaged by a friend, another parent, while at a Brophy sporting event, in a friendly but intense discussion: Walter brought up with Fr. Olivier matters regarding the failure of the Jesuits to counter the moral collapses in the Church, their tacit OK of homosexuality, of abortion, and their practical secular-atheism, their “compartmentalization” of their Catholic Faith. He rhetorically asked Fr. Olivier, “Why is this allowed to go on?” The question wasn’t pointed at Fr. Olivier, who certainly was a complete counter-example, but a rhetorical question.
Suddenly, Fr. Olivier whirled around, and looked at Walter with a fixed glance, tears in his eyes, and said, “You are right: I have seen too much, and I have allowed too much that was wrong to happen: please pray for me!” And Fr. Olivier grasped his hands in a firm shake, and walked away, clearly distraught.
I think that speaks volumes.
Anyone who really knows Brophy knows the Jesuits there in recent years have lost the spiritual core of some outstanding traditional priests, men ordained in the “old rite, old Church”: Fr. Olivier (ordained ’57, d. 2015), Fr. John Perlite (ordained ’50, d. 2010); Fr. John Becker (ordained ’56, d. 2008), and many others. Drained of this corps of outstanding priests with dedicated sacramental and prayer lives, well,… it speaks volumes.
When Fr. Perlite, an intensely prayerful man and an example of patient endurance in the face of all the contemporary madness in the Jesuits, prior to his passing, was asked what he now did, he replied, “Accepting it all.”
Jesuit high schools like Brophy cater mainly to the power elite of the whatever area they are located. Because a huge percentage of their students aren’t Catholic, the school doesn’t feel like they can afford to take orthodox stances on issues like this without alienating a chunk of their donor clientele.
The school doesn’t want to take orthodox stances not because they’re worried about alienation, but because they don’t believe in orthodoxy. Period. No orthodox person is going to sell their soul. People need to quit defending Jesuit institutions at any level. You defenders are enablers of their problem. The Jesuits do not pursue strong pro-life positions because by and large their order is dominated by feminists /homosexualists as demonstrated by their Quarter Billion Dollars paid in settlements in the homosexual abuse era.
By the way, it is interesting that the acerbic Facebook post of “Mary Keller”, someone who says she was associated in some way with The Broph, has now been deleted from the Cal-Catholic portal.
I wonder why. She so perfectly enunciated the cold, insulting secular thinking of many (by no means all) who claim to represent the school.
I had hoped she would leave it up, because it spoke volumes.
What can one expect from the Jesuits when their leader is shown on youtube. Go to you tube and type in its search engine “Pope Francis to proclaim more”
Let’s hope the numbness Halvorson was left feeling extends to his Brophy alumnus check-writing hand.
