Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, Chancellor of the Board of Trustees of St. Patrick’s Seminary & University, has appointed Rev. George F. Schultze, S.J. as President-Rector and Vice Chancellor effective July 1, 2017.
Fr. Schultze has been at St. Patrick’s since 2005, serving on the Seminary faculty, holding various administrative positions and serving as spiritual director. Prior to this he was on the faculty and staff of the University of San Francisco College of Professional Studies for six years. His undergraduate work at Cornell University was in Industrial and Labor Relations and he has advanced degrees in business, philosophy, theology and social ethics.
Fr. Schultze is a Mountain View native and entered the California Province of the Society of Jesus in 1984. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of the East Bay and directs Ignatian Retreats at the Jesuit Retreat Center and at the Seminary.

There is a very good– but very tragic!– story on the Canadian website, LifeSiteNews, today, Friday Feb. 17th– about 93-year-old Canadian ex-priest, Gregory Baum, one of the most highly influential leaders of Vatican II. An ex-priest, a gay man with lovers for many decades, a strong “Catholic” promoter of sexual libertarianism and social justice, a strict anti-“Humanae Vitae” Canadian clergy leader– and above all– a FRAUD!! Want to read this, along with another horrible article, about the Canadian Catholic Teachers’ union strongly promoting abortion, homosexuality, and feminism?? Plus– much more!
As many of you will recall– Baum (a main peritus at the Council) was a major author of “Nostra Aetate.” Plus much more! What is happening to our Church?? What will happen, with the new Jesuit rector, at our local seminary??
Anonymous,
I will admit there are some things in his bio that are not stellar. With that said, not all Jesuits are liberal or heterodox. Therefore, since I’m not familiar with him, I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise.
Steve Seitz–
Just curious about what appears to you to be “not steller” in his bio (if you’re refering to Fr. Schultze)?
I am not asking to argue. I do not know him personally but I know someone who does. It would be interesting to get a first hand opinion. I’ve also done ne a little research in the web and Fr. Schultze appears to be very Catholic…unlike some…oh I think I’ll leave it at that!
VeiledThreat,
The two warning flags for me are that he’s a modern Jesuit (flag 1) who has taught at USF (flag 2). I’ve known a few real good Jesuits. But most Jesuits, as you probably know, seem to be more interested in pleasing academia than in preaching the Gospel.
But, like you, I don’t know him either. I hope and suspect that I’m wrong and that he’ll be excellent as rector.
TheVeiledThreat,
By the way, the tenor of your question didn’t seem belligerent. I appreciate that you clarified that it wasn’t.
As for me, I always respond In a way that is direct and sometimes confrontational. I need to remind myself to be a little more gentle around here. Regretfully, the need for brevity sometimes makes this difficult.
Here’s an interview with Fr. Schultze from quite a while ago that I dug up:

(A window came up on the link saying I needed to sign up but when I clicked again I was able to see the article worn no sign in.)
Fr. Schultze’s background may at first lead you to think he’s a social justice warrior but on reading the article it sounds like he has a very reasonable and Catholic outlook. I think he also has something to do with Nano Farms, though I don’t see his name there.
https://nanofarms.com/about/
Nano Farms was started by Fr. Fessio–a Jesuit. :)
Am I missing something? What does Baum have to do with the story of Fr. George Schultze who has been appointed rector of St. Patrick’s seminary in Menlo Park California? Is the commenting mechanism on this site mixed up or something?
Yes, he’s a Jesuit. There ARE good Jesuits still these days and he is one of them
I do not know him personally but I know of certain actions of his that would indicate a wonderful humility.
Don’t panic, Veiled Thread! Yes, in fact, Vatican II and its clergy leaders do have a lot to do with today’s seminaries and priestly formation! Baum, a leading figure (and an ex-priest!) has led a very troubling, un-Christian, immoral life, and has had a huge, tragic influence of immorality, on the post-Conciliar Church! Of course, Fr. Schulze has nothing directly to do with Baum. The whole point is– it looks like the Church has been headed in a troubling direction, and the total huge changes at the seminary, can make you wonder ad worry!
Sorry for the misprint in my above comment– the final words in the last line should read, “…can make you wonder and worry!” There is too little time allowed, to correctly post a comment!
I can assure you that the appointment of Fr. Schultze is a step in the right direction. Just you wait and see!
(I mean if you consider the direction Baum was heading to be the wrong direction.)
Veiled Thread– I am not comparing the two, Baum and Schulze! Of course not! It is just scary, the collapse of the very long tradition, of the leadership of the Sulpician Fathers, at St. Patrick’s Seminary— and all of the troubles of our modern Church! Obviously– the Sulpician Fathers, with their long traditions of operating seminaries, in Europe and in America– are no longer any good??? And Baum’s immoral life is very frightening! He was one of the prominent leaders of the Second Vatican Council! Scary! That’s all!
I will again give the correct website name, for the above comment– http://www.LifeSiteNews.com
While I did not get to speak with him personally, I only heard good things about him from the seminarians. Please pray that he will continue the status quo at St. Patrick’s, which is very orthodox in its formation. Having been there since 2005, he knows what is best for the seminary. I trust him to continue to keep this seminary great.
Don’t panic. The Islamist are encouraging the left to create chaos, so they can later come in and take over and put in Sharia. That is what this is all about. Cardinal Sarah is right about the two horses of the Apocalypse — destruction of the family through sexual promiscuity and serious gender bending and Islam. As the Virgin Mary said, “Do whatever He tells you.” Jesus Christ said, “If you love me, keep my Commandments.” That means all of them. They are not multiple choice.
My apologies. My last post is not related to the article above. I meant it for somewhere else, but to make things clear, the Islamists I mentioned are those who want Shariah Law and the Caliphate if anyone wondered what I meant by Islamists.
As former (then) Bishop Cordileone revealed in the Oakland Diocesean newspaper, Catholic Charities East Bay funds contraception. Being on the board there is no badge of honor.
Here a small piece of interview to father Shultze.
“……MW: I spent my working years working in labor and found chapter 6, A Swing To The Cultural Left, especially interesting. This chapter discusses the Catholic unease with labor as beginning in the 1960’s. It talks about George Meany, a Catholic Democrat who was the builder of the modern AFL-CIO, as being appalled at the development of cultural radicalism in the Democratic Party. In this intriguing chapter you go into the issues of abortion, same-sex marriage and how those who choose to practice homosexuality impact our culture. How do all of these issues inter-relate, and what do they have to do with unions, society and the Catholic Church?
‘Father’ GS: These issues are…
GS: These issues are important to the direction of labor because millions of American working people continue to believe in a respect for life from conception to death and the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. These are moral positions that faith and reason will always maintain. Labor leaders are making a huge mistake by accepting and at times supporting the abortion or so-called same-sex marriage positions of special interest groups who have bored from within. Some might profile Mr. Meany as an anachronistic curmudgeon but large numbers of good-willed people still embrace his understanding of work as being the answer to the social question. Good jobs lead to secure families and communities for children, women and others who…
Good jobs lead to secure families and communities for children, women and others who may be vulnerable in any society. With regard to homosexuality, your question is well put. Homosexual men and women, according to Catholic teaching, should not suffer discrimination or any form of abuse. Homosexual activity, however, is a sin against God and nature. I can reasonably argue that practicing homosexuality is bad for individuals and our society. I also argue with reason that adultery and stealing are wrong. Should we show compassion and mercy to those who have sinned? Yes. But we should not attempt to turn any wrong into a right.

The immoral lifestyle of Gregory Baum does not invalidate Nostra Aetate. It was approved in a landslide vote of 2,221 to 88 by the Council fathers. If the sinfulness of the clergy affected the validity of the Sacraments, none of us could ever gather for the Holy Mass!
Harold– regardless of the so-called “validity” or “non-validity” of the Documents of Vatican II– the evils of Baum are a HUGE black mark on the integrity and respectability of the Church– in our “Vatican II” era, especially! It is as bad as the revelation that authors of the document for the USCCB, in around the year 2002, regarding Church clergy child molestation– were, themselves– unreported child molester priests, whose crimes were covered up evilly, by their bishops!! This sort of thing is highly destructive to the integrity and trustworthiness of the Church!! Very scary!!
I will say one more thing. It does not look good, to see highly sinful men, in Roman collars, with HUGE university theology degrees, very high up in the Catholic Church– trying to ignorantly guide millions of very faithful, morally-decent, hardworking, Catholics, worldwide, who are married and guiding children in the Faith, daily!! Unsupervised, do-as-they-please clergy– and we are to obey and follow them?? And our children?? Where are the true, holy Church leaders for our era?? Nearly ostracized!! Scary!!
Maybe it took a couple millennia– but at least the Church finally had the courage, and the decency– to stop persecuting the poor Jews for “deicide,” and forgive them, for the death of Christ– which only a few Jews of Christ’s day, actually committed, turning Him in to the Romans, to be killed, on trumped-up false charges!! “Nostra Aetate” was a great blessing, to finally end this ridiculous, mindless, heartless, anti-Semitic persecution, of the poor Jews!! Yet– Christ is our Redeemer– and of course– not all religions are equal to His!! (Got that, immoral Gregory Baum??)
Everyone- I want to put your minds at rest! I know Father George Schultze and he is the REAL DEAL!
He is one of the few Jesuits that are true to the traditional Church!!!
Father is a person, though very smart, can speak to a person, perhaps whom is not as smart, and NEVER talks down to you, he talks to you at your level, without you feeling dumb. He really puts you at ease:)
Also, when he speaks to you, it’s like the Great St. John Paul who had the ability to be speaking with you and his whole attention was purely on you, as if no one else existed!!!
He is a great gift to St. Patrick’s Seminary and to the Church as a whole:)
And I look forward to more seminarians at St. Patrick’s and the wonderful training they will…
So is this the guy who is so bad that San Jose had to make a precipitous decision to leave St. Patrick’s? A California Jesuit rector. What does that bishop want? An Episcopalian?
Father Michael,
We pray for Bishop McGrath. He really needs to retire! The timing of his moving the seminarians all the way to Chicago speaks VOLUMES!!!!!! Menlo Park is very close to San Jose, I feel that something is ‘rotten in Denmark’ as the old expression goes…. and whom is the Cardinal in charge of the diocese of Chicago? Cardinal Cupich, whom is very progressive to say the least.
Pray for all the Bishops especially the ones who are not on the right path.
Elizabeth– Bishop McGrath ad Cardinal Cupich are very similar in their beliefs– both very “progressive” and liberal, with support for the “LGBTs” and feminism. Etc. Very destructive! As for differences between the two seminaries (St. Patrick’s and Mundelein) — I don’t know. Prior to Vatican II, both were excellent– with Mundelein having an outstanding reputation, long ago!
Of course, Bishop Barron used to be the Rector of Mundelein!
I wonder if perhaps St. Patrick’s Seminary will now have a more traditional priestly formation —- which may upset a liberal prelate, like San Jose’s Bishop McGrath! He also may fear that more orthodox priests might be hard for him to deal with, in his Diocese! It seems ridiculous, however, for a young candidate for the priesthood from the San Jose Diocese, to be told to pack up and go thousands of miles across the country, to Mundelein, if they want to become a priest!
