Los Angeles clinic named for Archbishop Romero distributes condoms

Oscar Romero (1917-1980), archbishop of San Salvador, El Salvador and a controversial figure in South American politics, was murdered in 1980 while at the altar saying Mass.

He eloquently stated his abhorrence of abortion: “It moves one’s heart to think: Nine months before I was born there was a woman who loved me deeply. She did not know what I was going to be like, but she loved me because she carried me in her womb and when she gave me birth, she took me in her arms, because her love was not just beginning – she conceived it along with me. A mother loves and that is why abortion is so abhorrent…” 

Clinica Msr. Oscar Romero operates private, nonprofit, federally qualified community health centers at two locations in Los Angeles. One is in the Pico-Union/Westlake area and the other is in the Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles neighborhood.

Clinica Msr. Oscar Romero website lists supporters. Two of the supporters listed are the California Endowment Foundation and the California Wellness Foundation. Both of these foundations offer extensive “family planning” services, including those for teens. Also listed as a government supporter of Clinica Msr. Oscar Romero is the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

HHS, through its Title X program, agencies, funds family planning and teen programs. A major Title X grantee is the California Family Health Council, Inc., noted as “Advancing Sexual & Reproductive Health Through Research, Education and Advocacy”.

A review of the health council website offers a search function. Inserting “Oscar Romero” as a search term brings up four hits: TeenSource Clinic Finder, Redirected Title X Funds, Find a Clinic, and Clinic Search.

TeenSource Clinic Finder at: www.teensource.org provides a page with a crude image of a cartoon character wearing a condom for a hat, and showing the words: “Put a cap (condom) on it. What’s Hot! Score Free Condoms. Free. Every time. Get condoms now”.

A zip code can be entered. Entering the zip codes of the two Clinica Msgr. Oscar Romero sites brings up Clinica Msr. Oscar Romero in first place in a list that also includes Planned Parenthood sites.

Returning to the home page of “TeenSource” and clicking on “Get Condoms Now” provides a page with the banner “GET FREE CONDOMS. Looking for free condoms? If you live in California and are 12 -19 years old, you’ve come to the right place. Enter your info below to find out how you can get free condoms near you.”

This mail request was tested, and it does work. A supply of 10 condoms and accompanying 10 packets of sex lubricant and instructions for how to use the condom was sent through US mail to a mailing address – provided as coming from a minor child.

Almost all organizations like Clinica Msgr. Oscar Romero which distribute condoms and other birth control drugs and devices to minor children, are involved with providing abortion referrals.

This is why we need to stop Title X, in fact, we should get rid of all these Titles and I hope that the Bishop’s office has been told about this as this is not only an insult to Msgr. Romero, but it also gives the appearance that the Roman Catholic Church is involved in this scandal. +JMJ+

Surely, Archbishop Gomez and the Archdiocesan lawyers will sue this despicable place in order to defend the good name of Archbishop Romero.l Years ago there was a similar place in East Los Angeles called “Our Lady of Guadalupe Clinic.” Catholics begged Bishop Juan Arzube to do something but he had no interest.

If Sen. Christine Kehoe’s bill SB 1338, Abortion, passes next week these clinics could well be on their way to training anyone to commit an abortion. They are already training nurses to make their living in this manner. We need the support of Sen. Juan Vargas, Sen Lou Correa, in So. Cal to help prevent this disaster.

Being holy needs to be defined by the lives of the bishops, as the Pope has charged them to do. All things good stem from holiness, and not from knowledge, managerial skill, administrative brilliance, or any other such cop out used by unholy bishops. The answer to the problem is bishops becoming holy.
