The following comes from a March 18 Angelus article by Archbishop José H. Gomez:
We are preparing to enter into the most sacred days in the Church’s calendar — Holy Week, the week of our salvation.
It is interesting that on Wednesday of Holy Week, March 23, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a critical case concerning religious liberty.
In a way it is appropriate. Because the case, Zubik v. Burwell, is all about how we live our faith in Jesus Christ. About three dozen religious institutions are challenging the government’s order that they provide health-care coverage that pays for contraception and sterilization, including forms of birth-control that act as abortifacients.
The most visible group in the case is the Little Sisters of the Poor, a Colorado religious order that provides care and comfort to the sick and dying. But Thomas Aquinas College, a Catholic college here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, is also a plaintiff in the case.
This case comes at a crucial moment in our country’s history.
It seems to me and others that in recent years the government has crossed a line. What is happening now cannot be chalked up to simple misunderstandings or intolerance.
There seems to be a deep disdain for certain Christian beliefs — about abortion, birth control and marriage. This hostility seems to be driving the government more and more to try to “punish” those who continue to hold these beliefs and to force them to change.
In the current case, the government is demanding that Catholic institutions make a stark choice. Either engage in practices that they believe are morally wrong — paying for birth control and abortifacients — or pay massive fines and penalties that would drive these institutions out of existence.
Thomas Aquinas College estimates that paying the fines threatened by the government would cost $3 million each year. Estimates for the Little Sisters are even higher than that.
What is so troubling is that no one can argue that there is a “shortage” of affordable birth control in our society. Even if there were a “problem,” the government could easily find other ways to provide free birth control to women.
So we are left wondering — why this fight? Why is the government so extreme in its demands that it is threatening nuns and other religious groups who are trying to serve society? Why would the government force them to spend the past four years in expensive litigation — just to defend their right to perform works of mercy and live out their faith in good conscience?
Labor unions, members of Congress and their staff and many other groups and organizations have all been granted “waivers” and “exemptions” to the mandates of the government’s health care law. Why couldn’t an exemption be offered to religious institutions?
It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the government is trying to make an example of these religious institutions.
Freedom of religion in America has always meant more than just the right to gather for worship or to pray in private. It has always meant that believers have full freedom to live out our faith in public — to express moral viewpoints, to work and run our businesses and institutions in ways that reflect our moral convictions.
Holy Week is a time for reflection. What happened to FIRST caring about God’s Supreme Court?
Archbishop Gomez must not realize that God is watching him address concerns over the U.S. Supreme Court while remaining silent over the terrible abuses that take place under Archbishop Gomez’s authority. Charity for the ‘Supreme Being, Who Made All Things,’ begins first, at home. Archbishop Gomez needs to clean house in his own Archdiocese. Also, It is not enough to throw out a few local crumbs of support for Traditional Catholicism while ignoring the giant disdainful elephant that is suffocating the fullness of Truth in Archbishop Gomez’s own Archdiocese.

“There seems to be a deep disdain for certain Christian beliefs — about abortion, birth control and marriage. This hostility seems to be driving the government more and more to try to “punish” those who continue to hold these beliefs and to force them to change.” = These same words could be applied to Catholic lead shepherds who are hostile and ashamed of the Church’s Teachings, Traditions and Devotions. They show embarrassment and disdain for the fullness of Catholic Truth. Some priests are silenced by brother priests and some are even punished for speaking up against same sex marriage, abortion or Church teaching on the evil use of artificial contraception.
Before Vatican II, and its decision to no longer allow governance and discipline in the Church, for the sake of so-called “religious freedom for all”— Church leaders were very strong and powerful, both among the Catholic faithful, and in society, worldwide, in all countries! They were actually great big moral and spiritual watch-dogs of civilization, who commanded the respect of all, including world leaders! They educated all of the Catholic faithful in Faith and Morals, and shaped the citizens of society, so they would be good and decent people! They prepared souls for the Kingdom of Heaven! Today, all of that is gone!
Linda Marie, your comment “before VC II,” should state further back than that.
The Catholic Church had abandoned its bully pulpit, the responsibility of properly instructing Catholics in the late ’50’s or they would have corrected the NY Times ad dissenters that placed that ad three days after Humnae Vitae was promulgated that they would not support this magisterial teaching.
Now is it too little, too late, has the damage been institutionalized? We will see.
But, thank you, Arbp Gomez, for what may be a very slight shift in direction from admonition against political-social sin back to person sin where it all began in THE Garden.
Agree. I never understood how there could be “structural sin”, “sinful structures” and the like. Isn’t all sin individual and personal? How could a structure, which does not have the ability to reason and to freely choose in each instance, be morally culpable?
BEWARE – The back door campaign against the Church is via the Bar Associations – who are passing Rules of Professional Responsibility that would essentially Prohibit Defending the Church – if the Gaystapo is the Attacker.

First Amendment the First Priority for Christians

Christians are struggling just to exercise their basic rights. Squeezed out, locked up, and tuned out, men and women of faith have somehow become the acceptable targets of discrimination.
From bakers and sportscasters to firefighters and florists, Christians are finding out the hard way that their government isn’t interested in real tolerance — but a one-way street that paves the way for punishment and censorship.
And too many people don’t even realize it’s happening. FRC has been telling their stories on websites like FreeToBelieve.com, hoping to draw attention to the greatest threat of religious liberty in the modern age.

The Supreme Court, increasingly (and with Catholic jurists) is increasingly being made to judicial “bless” the unacceptable, due to its reading of the US Constitution. If this is what the Constitution says, then it is time to change it. Regardless, the notion that 9 judges (or only 5) can change fundamental beliefs and say that all must now bow to the power of sodomites is astonishing. No power like this was ever imagined for the High Court.
Many have little doubt that the Sisters will lose. SCOTUS is doing Satan’s bidding. But, remember that Nazi’s had its own high court, too. Judges do the bidding of whoever is in power. And Lucifer now sits in Scalia’s chair.

“What an insult to the early Christian martyrs. Thousands of early Christians suffered horrible tortures and death over a mere pinch of incense so as to avoid offending God,” Hichborn told LifeSiteNews, referring to the offering Roman Christians were asked to burn before a pagan altar to escape execution. “This, on the other hand, is the coward’s way out.”

“Only Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have a mathematical chance of winning the state-by-state contests to become the Republican nominee for President of the USA.
But since John Kasich is still in the race, we’ve updated our Presidential Report Card on the Natural Family to reflect his record on 9 issues of concern to pro-family citizens.
See and share the documentation of how Trump supports much of, Kasich part of, and Cruz none of the harmful “LGBT” (homosexual-bisexual-transsexual) agenda. “
Only a tyrannical regime would get rid of freedom of religious expression. That’s what we are now experiencing throughout the western world. Once you strip away freedom of religious expression then your country ceases to be a democracy. After religious freedom of expression is stripped away it won’t be long before physical persecution begins to take place. I urge everyone reading California Catholic Daily News to start praying the daily Rosary. Signing petitions does no good and has done absolutely nothing to change the anti God agenda being promoted throughout the western world. Please start praying your daily Rosary and pray for the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary promised at Fatima 99 years ago.
Right again John. I’m taking your advice & praying the Rosary. I draw inspiration
from the Cristeros who have modeled for us what we’re going to have to do (God help me) before too long. Viva Cristo Rey!
