Names of priests Father Larry Morrison of St. Rose of Lima Parish in South Reno is officially the pastor, but has little involvement with the church. Father Loy Torrente is the assigned priest who regularly celebrates Mass there. He is originally from the Philippines but has lived in the U.S. for many years. He is a hospital chaplain who serves the parish on Sundays. He is one of only a few priests in the state of Nevada that celebrates the Tridentine Mass with permission of the local bishop.
Homilies Father Torrente is a good homilist and a faithful Catholic priest.
Fellow parishioners About 50 attend the Mass on Sundays, who come from miles around. Ages vary, from young families to octagenarians. Stay for coffee and donuts after the Mass and meet the parishioners.
Additional observations Holy Spirit is a mission church of St. Rose of Lima Church in South Reno. It is located in the Washoe Valley, about half-way between Reno and Carson City. As the crow flies it’s a few miles from Lake Tahoe, but on the road it’s about a 16-mile drive. It was established in 1971, closed for a time, and re-opened it as a Tridentine Mass center.
It’s a simple building, which houses some traditional Catholic art, including a mural behind the altar depicting the 1937 vision of Sister Lucy of Fatima. The old Latin Mass was not popular with previous bishops, hence it is the only site of an approved Latin Mass in the diocese. The current bishop, Randolph Calvo, has been friendly to the church and attended a recent expansion of the facilities.
