Mass times Sundays, 8:30 a.m. 1st Saturdays, 9:30 a.m.
Confessions Sundays, 8 a.m., 1st Saturday, 9 a.m.
Names of priests Father Larry Morrison of St. Rose of Lima Parish in South Reno is officially the pastor, but has little involvement with the church. Father Loy Torrente is the assigned priest who regularly celebrates Mass there. He is originally from the Philippines but has lived in the U.S. for many years. He is a hospital chaplain who serves the parish on Sundays. He is one of only a few priests in the state of Nevada that celebrates the Tridentine Mass with permission of the local bishop.
School No.
Music Usually Father Torrente celebrates a Low Mass (a read Mass, not sung), but you might experience a sung or High Mass on special occasions.
Homilies Father Torrente is a good homilist and a faithful Catholic priest.
Fellow parishioners About 50 attend the Mass on Sundays, who come from miles around. Ages vary, from young families to octagenarians. Stay for coffee and donuts after the Mass and meet the parishioners.
Parking Ample.
Additional observations Holy Spirit is a mission church of St. Rose of Lima Church in South Reno. It is located in the Washoe Valley, about half-way between Reno and Carson City. As the crow flies it’s a few miles from Lake Tahoe, but on the road it’s about a 16-mile drive. It was established in 1971, closed for a time, and re-opened it as a Tridentine Mass center.
It’s a simple building, which houses some traditional Catholic art, including a mural behind the altar depicting the 1937 vision of Sister Lucy of Fatima. The old Latin Mass was not popular with previous bishops, hence it is the only site of an approved Latin Mass in the diocese. The current bishop, Randolph Calvo, has been friendly to the church and attended a recent expansion of the facilities.
Wonderful Church. But the fact that this is only TLM site in the entire diocese is shameful, as are the attitudes of hostility of prior bishops to Tradition, and to obedience to prior popes who asked that the application of the TLM be “generous.” But, in reality, who really cares? One priest — a likely holy and benevolent priest — is the sole guarantor that the vigilant can find the Mass of All Time. And, why give Bishops Calvo much credit for this? Surely Lazarus gave the poor man a crumb or two from his table. Recall, however, that Lazarus did not meet a happy end, after all. Everyone should bombard the present bishop with a demand that every parish make provision for a regularly scheduled Sunday TLM.
St. Christopher, as usual, you don’t let any good deed go unpunished!
Agreed, and by the way we do not need “PERMISSION” to have the Mass of All Times Pope Benedict the XVI made sure of that, boy how we miss him. I was in Reno and there are enough Catholic Churches in town, but had to drive all the way to Holy Spirit just to attend the TLM how fair is that Bishop Calvo??????????
“He is one of the few priests in the state of Nevada to celebrate the Tridentine Mass with the permission of his bishop.” Huh? Why are bishops so reticent about allowing the Tridentine Mass to be said?
Ummm maybe because it is not the ordinary mass?
Self identifies YFC,
Unfortunately you are correct, but how correct is it that the Mass infallibly declared to last for all times by a really canonized Pope, St. Pius V, is considered by the modernist to be the extraordinary while the mass written largely by heretics of the protest-ant church is the ordinary one?
May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika!
Viva Cristo Rey!
Yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher, Founding Director
Concerned Roman Catholics of America, Inc
SAINT John Paul II is a modernist is he? Look, I appreciate that you are bound to the spirituality of the Tridentine Mass. I think the conversion to the later missal was poorly handled and largely disrespected those who had – and were rightly taught to have – a bond to that mass. But, can I just ask that in, instead of simply promoting and expanding the use of the Tridentine Mass, you do so in a charitable way that doesn’t similarly disrespect those of us who believe strongly in the spirituality and efficacy of the Ordinary Form. I don’t understand how you expect widespread respect for TLM when many proponents like you trash talk the mass that is approved for everyday use throughout the world. Do you think you will be rewarded in heaven for disparaging the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Bishops and Popes who promulgated it, and the People of God who cling to it?
YFC here is a deal for you, when the the TLM is ordered to be offered in every single parish along with NO, whether “demanded ” or not, when every seminarian is required to learn the TLM along with the sacraments in the Old rite, then I will start respecting the NO… Just once I would love for the situation to be reversed, to have the NO replaced with TLM worldwide and see how your side likes it.
Kenneth is merely pointing out the roots of the Novus Ordo Missae, YFC. Why is that so threatening? Even if folks ‘cling’ to it. Folks cling to many things for many reasons, often based on sentimentality or because that is all they’ve known. That doesn’t mean that that is best or the most fruitful. And leadership often has to deal with a cat-out-of-the-bag scenario. In for a penny in for a pound and all that. But that leadership mentality doesn’t always lend itself to finding one’s way home…. or to the end of the rainbow as the quiet double-back from behind to get us back on course happens too.
Either way, it doesn’t have to be an emotional discussion predicated on so much on human respect, but rather an examination of fruits and forms etc.
He attends an independent chapel that teaches that they are preserving the True Catholic Faith, that the Popes since Vatican II will at some time in the future be declared heretics and since a heretic cannot be Pope, when that happens all that occurred since VatII will be nullified. Until that time, they accept the Popes and obey them in all that they agree with.
You don’t get to make the rules, Canisius, you are required to submit to the Roman Pontiff.
Ann Malley you and Kenneth are calling an infallibly declared Saint to be a modernist and implied he had adopted heretical teachings of protestants.
That Kenneth clings to the EF is not something that is threatening to me, and if you accurately read my tone, I expressed a great deal of admiration for it.
So the tables are turned, AM, why is it so threatening for YOU? After all, I’m not the one bashing the EF and its adherents, except insofar as I am bashing the bashing of those admiring the OF.
It is impossible to imagine the amount of self pride it must take to say that you are a better judge of the “best and most fruitful” form of the very heart of Christian worship, its source and its summit, than all the Popes and Bishops since the New Missal was released. Some, I might point out again, were infallibly declared Saints.
It is difficult for you to imagine many things, YFC, but that is okay. (Unless it comes to your attempt to redefine sodomy as not mortally sinful) But before beginning the Battle of the Saints, you need to recall that Pope St. John Paul II was not beatified due to his saintly pontificate, but rather his personal life according to Rome. Yes, that too is a ‘new’ and modern approach to sainthood, much like the removal of the very wise notion of reviewing a person’s history in its entirety, the good and the bad.
All it takes to be a Saint is to be in Heaven, YFC. The infallible declaration that someone is in Heaven does not necessarily equate to that person never having erred, even on a large scale. Or do you advocate that the handling of the pedophile scandal – which was quite large and had a deleterious effect on the Church – was a little matter?
That said, you have no notion whatever of what Pope Saint JPII repented of prior to death. Nothing what so ever. So spin the tables as much as you’d like, YFC, the discussion isn’t about me or about you, but about the Faith. The same goes for your cutting remark to Canisius about not being able to make the rules, but having to submit – you openly advocate against the CCC on your own pet issue. So your admonishing rings like a sour bell and little else.
Ann Malley, you still have to explain how it is that your pride allows you to ignore the Magisterial teaching of Popes and Bishops acting in unity. Keep weaving, keep justifying your schismatic behavior, keep pretending that you know better than Popes and Bishops.
Ann Malley, there is a difference between a saint and a Saint. Let me explain. YOU say that ‘all that is needed to be a Saint is to be in heaven’. Well, yes and no. All that is needed to be a saint is to be in heaven – even if we were to adopt your rather belittling language. But to be declared infallibly by Popes on earth to be a Saint requires an heroic life, and certainly a life free from public heresy.
So please, stop belittling the notion of Sainthood by saying “all that is declared” nonsense. The infallible declaration of sainthood is an indication that they did not teach heresy while alive, unless that heresy was publicly retracted.
This infallibly declared Saint used and propagated a Roman Missal that you reject as heretical. What does that make you?
YFC, she does not “have to” explain anything to you.
Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, rule #4. “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” YFC, I’ll give an ear any day to what Ann has to say over anything that you, a follower of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, would ever have to say. YFC, one thing is apparent to me, you have no shame, but then, neither does the devil. :(
Ann Malley, I guess you missed it when after the canonization of Saint John Paul II, the SSPX ran an essay on its website saying that canonization did not declare someone to be in heaven.
Of course, you are correct and they are wrong and I am glad that you did not fall for their nuancing of truth.
YFC, master weaver, stick to the notion that the attempt and desire to be truly faithful is pride. The more I hear and read from you, fear and justifiable prudence is more like it. So thank you for putting forth just cause with your every post. I would not account all those scandalized away from ‘full communion’ as filled with pride.
As to what makes a Saint, spin and weave all you’d like and attempt to manipulate toward your own agenda. The Novus Ordo and the TLM will stand on their own merits and fruits, and certainly will in the course of history. No matter what Saint or saint speaks to them.
And Anonymous – who I am shocked even visited the SSPX website for fear of tainting – while I will not openly debate whether or not ‘I’ believe JPII to be a Saint or not, I would also have advocated for the ‘traditional’ prudence in judging such matters as a rushing to anything is often not the wisest course.
And you still didn’t answer me, YFC, as to whether or not you feel that the mishandling of the pedophile scandal in the Church was a small matter. It most assuredly WAS NOT.
God bless you, Tracy, and thanks. I feel the same about you!
The “roots” of the extraordinary form are not the Protestants. It is the Lord Jesus Christ and His Apostles at the Last Supper. The Mass of the Apostles was added to and added to over the centuries. The Vatican II changes like reading from the Old Testament and including liturgical prayers from the Church Fathers were a restoration of the Mass. The Mass of Pius V was not infallibly declared to last for all.
Pope Paul VI: “It is Christ’s will, it is the breath of the Holy Spirit which calls the Church to make this change. A prophetic moment is occurring in the mystical body of Christ, which is the Church. This moment is shaking the Church, arousing it, obliging it to renew the mysterious art of its prayer. ”
“In every case, and at all times, let us remember that “the Mass is a Mystery to be lived in a death of Love. Its divine reality surpasses all words. . . It is the Action par excellence, the very act of our Redemption, in the Memorial which makes it present” (Zundel).”
The Novus Ordo was advertised and promoted as being a restoration, Anonymous. The fruits do not lend themselves to that of restoration, however, and have not proven the great means to ‘restore’ a flood of Protestants back to the Catholic Church.
And no, the ‘roots’ of the TLM are not Protestant. But the influences on the Novus Ordo were.
Your logic is faulty. Correlation is not causality.
Whoever said that the purpose of Vatican II was to restore a flood of Protestants back to the Catholic Church?
You do not know that it would be any different had Vatican II not occurred. Pre-Vatican II Mass was not the great reverential experience that you imagine it to be. In reality, it was a lot of people praying their rosary and reading their prayerbooks and spacing out and fighting in the parking lot and vilifying parishes of other ethnicities.
Anonymous, you are correct that at the pre-Vatican II Mass there where “a lot of people praying their rosary and reading their prayerbooks”. Vatican II called for Latin to be more widely taught to all Catholics and to encourage the faithful to follow the Mass. It did not mandate a complete change in the Mass which is what we ended up getting.
And gossiping on the church stairs and posting on the bulletin board how much each family gave to the Church. And years of saying Masses in gymnasiums while the Church was being built.
And priests yelling at kids.
Maybe other people who are old enough to remember can post their memories. There were reverential people and reverential moments; it wasn’t all bad but it was not perfect like you seem to think. And 80-90% of them voted Democrat.
Anonymous from what I heard from some of the faithful is that some church leadership disobeyed what true intentions of the Vatican II had intended and promoted their own changes instead of truly following it from its true intentions. The Novus Ordo was meant to remain reverent but its sad that those of bad will just did their own thing and that is why we have many abuses today. I heard that it is in the USA that is where most of the abuses began, where even some from the church leadership even disobeyed Saint Pope John Paul II and took advantage of his true intentions. Someone mentioned that St. John Paul did not intend for girl alter servers but he was tricked into agreeing. Something like that. It just seems too complicated to me. I’m tired of having to try to figure it out and even try to correct some of the abuses, frankly I just rather try to remain faithful, seek out loyal priests and just persevere raising our family with faithfulness. The rest, God will have to punish those who have caused scandal.
I didn’t say Vatican II was designed to bring back a flood of Protestants, Anonymous, but rather that was a motivation for the Novus Ordo Missae. And Nobody is saying that Catholics were perfect prior to VII, far from it. People have always been sinners, even Catholics. But it was very much clearer to folks what it meant to be Catholic and to practice the Faith back in the day, if only evidenced by the regular confession lines etc.
As for praying the Rosary and/or meditating during mass, would you prefer folks just not come at all? Participation in mass is a union of spirit and prayer and intention, not necessarily raising one’s hands and having to speak up or take on the priests jobs or chatting with one’s neighbor. That may appear active, but it is also highly distracting for many.
Any vilification of other ethnicities sounds more like a matter of societal prejudice, more likely a sign of the times. But even so, I could attend a TLM in the Philippines and know exactly what I was praying. Not the case with the Novus Ordo.
Anonymous writes: “…and 80-90% of them voted Democrat.”
The Democrat party was not endorsing wholesale tax funded baby butchering for profit and the elevation of sodomy to normal and now even equal in value to true marriage back then, Anonymous. They are not the same party today as they once were. Much like the media would have us believe that the Catholic Church isn’t or shouldn’t be what She always has been and always will be.
Please get your facts right before spewing offensive comments about a bishop and a diocese about which you apparently know very little. Holy Spirit Mission is NOT the only location in the Diocese of Reno where the TLM is celebrated. Father Loy is NOT “one of the few priests who celebrates the TLM with the permission of the bishop.”
There is a TLM on the first Friday of every month, at 6:30 p.m., at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Reno. Fr Francisco Nahoe, OFM Conv, the Rector of the Cathedral, celebrates. He’s a wonderful singer and musician and the Mass is almost always a Missa Cantata. He also celebrates the TLM on other occasions. He celebrated the first Solemn High Mass in this diocese for over 50 years for the feast of Saint Francis this past year. He celebrated a TLM Solemn High Mass with Bishop Calvo in choir for the Solemnity of All Saints. He celebrated a TLM (the past two years) on Easter Sunday at 5 p.m., and we’ll have another TLM on this coming Pentecost at 5 p.m. He celebrates a Low Mass about every month at the 12:10 daily Mass.
Bishop Calvo is hardly an enemy of the TLM. He has been in choir, at his Cathedra, during at at least two TLMs in the past three years–All Saints in 2013, and a Requiem Mass in 2012. Get your facts right, people, before slandering a bishop. On All Saints day the Cathedral was packed–standing room only–for the TLM.
Thanks Gwen Linde for the information. Glad you corrected the assumptions.
You are welcome. Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral is on Facebook and I regularly update the TLM schedule there.
I am disappointed that we have not yet seen an apology from at least three posters who slandered bishops without knowing the facts. We should be trying to make friends for the TLM, and convince our bishops and priests to support the TLM, not spewing venom and false accusations. Some self-styled traditionalists don’t exactly cover themselves in glory, or in Christian charity, with this type of behavior.
