San Diego names street after Harvey Milk

The following excerpt comes from a May 8 story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

San Diego will be the first city in the country to have a street named after gay civil rights activist Harvey Milk.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to rename the two-block road leading up to the San Diego LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest from Blaine Avenue to Harvey Milk Street in honor of the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California.

“This is a great day of pride for our community, our district and this city,” said Councilman Todd Gloria, who is gay and represents the Hillcrest area.

Across the nation, plazas, centers and schools carry Milk’s name. But the Hillcrest street will be the first in any city named after the late San Francisco supervisor, according to U-T San Diego research and other reports.

The name change is expected to become official this month.

Milk’s life was cut short at age 48 when he was assassinated in 1978 along with then-San Francisco Mayor George Moscone by Dan White, a former San Francisco supervisor who had resigned but was seeking to get his job back.

His story was thrust back into the limelight in the 2008 film Milk, which received an Oscar for best screenplay. Sean Penn also won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Milk.

Nicole Murray Ramirez, a San Diego city commissioner and gay rights activist who was friends with Milk, said the New York native fell in love with California after being stationed in San Diego as a Navy diving instructor in 1954….

Ramirez said the unanimous vote for the street name change shows how far San Diego has come in changing attitudes toward the gay community since Hillcrest emerged as a hub of the LGBT movement in the 1970s.

Not everyone was happy about the street renaming. Conservative Christian activist James Hartline was the only person to speak at the City Council meeting in opposition to the change. He described Milk as a degenerate who did not deserve to have a street named after him….

City Hall insiders expected a unanimous vote on the issue despite past comments from Councilwoman Lorie Zapf calling homosexuality a sin and saying that gays should not be allowed to hold public office. She apologized for her comments during the 2010 campaign and voted yes for the name change — after accidentally hitting the “no” button.

The City Council vote was conducted Tuesday to make sure the street signs can be changed in time for what would have been Milk’s 82nd birthday on May 22. An unveiling ceremony is planned for that afternoon at 5 p.m.

He is a degenerate. Instead of celebrating heroes, we are celebrating the elevation of Neros, and Zeros. In present pop culture, most of the attention is given to people who have contradicted the fact that we are made in the image and likeness of God. We are now animals, who at best, act worse than most animals. Because most in the Catholic Church hierarchy are silent, ignorance is allowed to spread.Precious souls cannot be saved when the truth is being ignored.

No need to read the entire story as it is so disgusting and false. Milk was not GAY; he was a homosexual, which has nothing to do with being gay at all. When God sends His punishment down upon us, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near San Diego. It is too bad that Councilman Zapf was cowered into recanting the truth and now she will have to answer to Jesus. +JMJ+

What a shame that people who don’t agree with this, are ashamed to voting for what they don’t even believe in. Save and protect us Lord from people who are ashamed to know you. Pray for those who live in San Diego. Before you know it they will be just like us here in L.A. or San Francisco. Pray for them. Pray for our country. God I beg you to have mecry on us.

Harvey Milk accomplished nothing other than being a target for a nut case. He deserves no honors for stopping a bullet. Why the San Diego city government feels the need to pander to what cannot be more than 3% of the overall population, I will never understand.

California government from top to bottom is so infested with the aggressive “gay” agenda and this example of a “invented” hero is the perfect examplel Under any other definition than “gay” the man was in no way a good example of anything. At the very least, he was nothing but what is defined as a mentally unbalanced pedophile and what is called a “drama queen”. People are such sheep!!!!!

Milk was not a civil rights activist, but a gay rights activist. Civil rights dealings with ethnicity, skin color, etc. Though it not scientifically proven yet, if in fact people are born with the desire to be, to have same sex relations, the attraction of a person of the same sex does not necessitate an action. It is a decision to engage in sexual relations or to enter a relationship with another person and is NOT civil rights. It is extremely troubling to me that we as a society would forego morality to appease the lifestyle of a select minority. This is such a travesty. God Love You.

The San Diego Union article failed to note that Harvey Milk had a penchant for teenage boys. Hero? I think not. San Diego seems to be a haven for sodomites. I am reminded of Randy Kraft, also famous in the past in San Diego and around So. Cal. Randy earned his current spot on Death Row via his murder conviction of 16 young men and teenage boys who were tortured sexually before he killed them. He is a suspect in 51 other murders in the 70s and 80s. People need to realize that practicing homosexuals are deviants, and have their minds and wills degraded to a perverse level. This is true whether one is a Harvey Milk, or a Randy Kraft.

The real travesty, is that some people refuse to treat people as equals, and prefer instead to segregate them into groups based on selective dogma.

Peter, I was going to raise some rational arguments to refute what you wrote but decided you’re so completely and utterly out of touch with reason and commonsense,it would be like trying to explain to Nietzsche that God is love. Please google Jim Jones & Harvey Milk, and you’ll have at least one very good example of Milk’s dark and sick history.

peter, by the inanity of your posts, and your insistence on using the slang word for the male reproductive organ as your moniker, using the lower case p rather than capitalizing your name as a proper noun calls for, we have learned to ignore your posts as being unworthy of serious consideration or substantive response. We know who you are and how you think, and I for one don’t think you should be posting on a website meant for Catholics. Even your choice of moniker is repulsive and seems to be mocking us on this site. That alone would disqualify your posts for publication if I were running this website, and the content of your posts reflects a distorted view of the world that is, without exception, a waste of time to read. Further, you bring dishonor on a proud name which was originally spoken first by Jesus Christ. For that alone, I feel you owe us all an apology, after which, may I suggest, a quiet repose on your part, that is, until and unless you decide to become a faithful Catholic?

Does anybody know how the street got its current name? I don’t recall any Blaine’s in San Diego history, so I’m guessing it was named after former Speaker James G. Blaine (1830-1893). If so, he’s not exactly my favorite politician of our nation’s history, as the state amendments named after him forbid direct government aid to educational institutions that have any religious affiliation. The actions to pass these amendments were aimed almost solely at Catholics, who were immigrating to the country en masse at the time. Fortunately, the Supreme Court ruling in 2002’s Zelman v. Simmons-Harris knocked a big chip out of the Blaine Amendments, but we still have a long way to go for the allowance of school vouchers.

Civil rights are not based on one’s sexual preference. Civil rights are rights to LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS that all humans are given by God. The rights of the unborn is the true civil rights issue facing us today. They are being denied Life. There is no homosexual gene, so, homosexuality cannot be innate. As Catholics and Christians, we are called to love, respect and honor all of our brothers and sisters. We are not called to confirm them in their sins. In other words, lover the sinner and hate the sin. Pax

Peter-You can lie to yourself, but don’t try to lie to me or other people on here, and more importantly to God the creator of the universe. If you choose to lay down with another man, it is your choice to do so. It is a choice you make, and act of the will just as it is an act of the will for a heterosexual man to lay down with a woman. The difference is it is unnatural for one man to lay down with another man and science proves this as well as natural law. Equality does not come from sexuality, but from being a human being. Unfortunately when one acts out on same sex desires they are dehumanizing their sexuality in an unnatural exchange and misuse of sexuality. If you are trying to tell me that you don’t content to have sexual relations with another man you are a liar. I find it quite insulting that you view the plight of a black man experiencing discrimination because of the color of his skin to a disordered behavior one has to consciously and deliberately do. You are clearly filled with great animus towards anything just and moral and I feel sorry for you. I will pray for you. God Love You.

peter, people are not all equal. God develops individual personality according to His will. Thus, there is an inequality among people. Homosexuals are gravely disordered on the moral level, which is eternal, whereas the self exaltation level used by gays to proclaim their equality is fleeting at best and worthless at least.

UJ, according to the history of God’s will as recorded in the Bible, the sin of murder plays second fiddle by a long shot to unbridled idolatry and adultery which lead to the final level of abomination which is sodomy, aka homosexual behavior.

All Harvey Milk ever did was help cause the death of hundreds if not thousands of young men and others by encourging them in sodomous and other bad behavior (bathhouses and all). That and pal around with the “Rev.” Jim Jones, a so-called bisexual, who murdered some more hundreds of people, mostly African Americans. Will people never get wise to such con artists? For God’s sake and your own do not follow such people. No one should have murdered Milk, but he was no hero either.

Posted Wednesday, May 16, 2012 4:13 PM By MD
diotima-I will not argue against treating people with same sex attraction justly and with compassion and respect. Mr. Milk though was more than someone trying to fight for justice, he wanted to create a society that was content with the actions of homosexuality and not the attraction people have towards people of the same sex. He wanted to spread the culture of homosexuality, to flaunt the lifestyle in our culture so the culture would view these disordered actions as acceptable behavior. This is not about the protection of people, but the promotion of a culture and naming a street after this man continues to perpetuate and build upon this culture that denies life at its core. The aim of the homosexual agenda is to gain acceptance of same-sex relations as a normal expression of love when in fact it is a denial of what love was created to be as shown to us in both our human sexuality being created male and female and in Sacred Scripture. I absolutely love all people with SSA, but hate when they act out and follow their desires toward disordered actions and I will not condone or accept this behavior. God Love You.

Just found out there is a move to name a Navy ship after the sodomist Harvey Milk. If this move towards the sodomy state continues, then there will be many Catholics shifting loyalties to the least immoral government and religious leadership which will not be the US govt and will not be the USCCB. Let’s see what that leaves us with … hmn, Islam?

New thought: When we pray that Jesus send us better religious leaders, let’s make sure to add “Catholic” religious leaders, just to make it clear that we want a Catholic leadership and not some different one. But when the bishops are almost all promoting homosexuality and effeminism it won’t be long before the faithful Catholics will have almost no bishops at all. Do we expect God to control bishops like robots, so that they live wanton and obnoxious lives but sign the right doctrinal papers? That is leadership? Signing papers? Maybe God is waiting for the faithful to make it clear that we will not give the time of day to immoral bishops, and that we need faithful bishops so that we are not running around without any at all.

jls: the idea of “hate the sin, love the sinner” can be found in the catechism of the catholic church, paragraphs 2357 and 2358. the former informs us that homosexual acts are “grave depravity” and “intrinsically disordered.” on the other hand, 2358 states that homosexuals are to be treated with “respect, compassion, and sensitivity.” i see absolutely no respect, compassion, and sensitivity among the bloggers. now they are deciding who is fit to contribute a comment. but then, mouthing cliches is much easier than struggling to think and speak with intelligence.

I had the displeasure of meeting Harvey Milk regarding a legal matter in San Francisco before the Board of Supervisors. The Media fails to report that he was an extremely effeminate individual exhibiting artificial and unnatural mannerisms and tendencies. It was very difficult to discuss a serious legal matter with him since he was always bringing in his homosexual agenda. He was always looking for a male target.

jls: “hate the sin but love the sinner” comes from the City of; God of St. Augustine, 14.6.21. the latin text states, “sed oderit vitium, amet hominem.” for an english translation of this passage, (“he should hate the fault but love the man” see page 556 of the penguin edition . also consult orthodox wiki’s article on st. augustine, 4.4.1. is one of augustine’s most important works, the work of one of the very greatest doctors of the church, to be considered as having magisterial authority?

diotima, have you never noticed that the people who post on CCD in opposition to homosexuality are the same people who post in opposition to anything that disregards Catholic values and Catholic teachings? Have you never noticed that the folks who post here promoting homosexuality also exhibit opposition to to those same Catholic values and teachings? I choose to be on the Catholic team, and almost all of those folks who choose to be on the other team are proving to us with each post that they are not merely non-Catholics, but truly anti-Catholic. They don’t merely take positions in opposition to Church teachings; their posts are mean-spirited, nasty, attack-prone, and sometimes vile. Some even choose posting monikers that are gutter slang for the male organ God designed. A friend tells me that CCD is bombarded with vile and pornographic e-mails, and these are from the anti-Catholic posters, not from those of us who are sick to death of all this conversation about perversion and what bad boys and girls we are on God’s team for not embracing the promoters of evil with open arms. We are in fact trying to love these people while hating their sin, but their posts are openly hostile to believers, and many of us do tire of reading their anti-Catholic rants and react with requests for them to change or go away. We are sick of them but also concerned for them, as they have put themselves in danger of the loss of their souls to eternal damnation.

Posted Thursday, May 17, 2012 11:53 AM By MD
Peter-Even if sexuality is innate, are you saying you don’t make the decision to lay down with another man? Do you not have the ability to choose whether or not to enter into a relationship with a person of the same sex? How can you compare skin color to an action or act of the will? The innate you speak of is desire/attraction and being black is not a desire or attraction, but an ethnicity whereas being “gay” is having the attraction (desire/attraction) for a person of the same sex. If you choose to satisfy this desire, you are making a choice and if you say this is not the case then you are a liar because you have to choose to engage in a relationship with another person. As I have said to you before, I think the anger you spew on this site goes beyond your detest for the Catholic Church, I think you are deflecting your anger towards the Church and don’t see that the source of your anger is the lack of satisfaction you are receiving from the misuse of your sexuality. In a sense, you are trying to satisfy your thirst with salt water and can’t see how you are killing yourself. I pray for you to find peace and experience the love and mercy of Jesus Christ to know the love He has planned for you. God Love You.

The laws in the Old Testament were set forth by god as the rules the Hebrews needed to follow in order to be righteous, to atone for the sin of Adam and Eve and to be able to get into Heaven. That is also why they were required to make sacrifices, because it was part of the appeasement for Original Sin. According to Christian theology, when Jesus came from Heaven, it was for the express purpose of sacrificing himself on the cross so that our sins may be forgiven. His sacrifice was supposed to be the ultimate act that would free us from the former laws and regulations and allow us to enter Heaven by acting in his image. That is why he said “it is finished” when he died on the cross. That is why Christians don’t have to circumcise their sons (God’s covenant with Jacob), that is why they don’t have to perform animal sacrifice, or grow out their forelocks, or follow any of the other laws of Leviticus. When you quote Leviticus as god’s law and say they are rules we must follow because they are what God or Jesus wants us to do, what you are really saying, as a Christian, is that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was invalid. He died in vain because you believe we are still beholden to the old laws. That is what you, a self-professed good Christian, are saying to your God and his son, that their plan for your salvation wasn’t good enough for you.

diotima, study Maryanne’s post where she explains the characterizations of the two opposing sides. I’m one of those whom the homosexual apologists accuse of attacking them. But in my real face to face daily life … rather lifetime of consistent behavior … I would be called a “counter attack” character. I will launch an assault against a first strike. It is indeed the gay agenda forces who have launched the strike against God and His Church and all people of good moral values and good will. God pointed this out clearly when He destroyed the attacking cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which He, God, did as a counter attack. The perverts had already gained total dominion over two cities and the towns and villages in their sway (pun intended), and God obviously felt He needed to stop the advance of perversion.

Thanks, UJ, for bringing up the issue. When you read the Old Testament you find the pattern over and over where a society increases its idol worship and adultry and then finds itself deep in homosexuality. That is when God whacks that society. Also, the Law of God sent murderers to special cities, but executed homosexuals, and effeminates as well as idol worshipers. The reason why non-Catholic governments dote on violent crimes as being more serious than ideology crimes is because they themselves are committing false or ideology and do not want the light turned on them. BTW, UJ, your flippant and intoxicated reply mean that you really do not care to either find the facts or think about them.

Diotima, if you’ve read much of this site, you would see that I agree that we do see a lot of hatred on this site towards people who act out on their same-sex attraction. I’ve called several people out on this directly in the past week. But as usual the situation is more complicated than that. For one thing, I’ve been censored on more than one site for the phrase that “homosexuality is a destructive force in the lives of otherwise good people” and “homosexual actions separate us from God.” So to me it seems that one cannot even speak openly about something that has been basic Christian thought for two thousand years without being censored. I do not hurl words like sodomite or abomination around. But yet I too find myself to be censored and labeled as a hater by gay people. I have personally received more threats and more bile at me by both gay and straight people for renouncing my own homosexuality in this day and age then I ever got from straight people for promoting it in the late 1970s. But like I said above, the subject is more complicated. Setting aside the obnoxious language of both side, the reality is that more people are damaged physically, morally, psychologically and above all spiritually by homosexual actions than by any over the top language of people who oppose it. The thing that hurts people with same-sex attraction the most is the very actions of homosexual life. I know that for a fact after seeing it firsthand for decades. So what do you think? Is my story hate speech? Should I be censored? By the way, since you quote the catechism like you believe it, do you believe all of it, as I do, or just the parts of it that you like? I’m curious and I’d like to know where you stand on this issue.

Posted Thursday, May 17, 2012 11:36 PM By JLS
John, nice pitch, but, alas, it is a Protestant theology and not Catholic. Catholicism teaches what Jesus teaches which is expressed well in the story of the woman caught in adultery. Jesus told her to sin no more; His work on the Cross was not a work of death but a work of life. Yes, He put death to death, but He also rose from the dead because He was sinless. You have to turn away from your sins, which is what the Old Testament Laws articulate, and which Jesus is the fulfillment of. Not a jot nor a tittle of the Law shall be changed. Sodomy was evil then and it is evil today; same with idolatry, which includes making up one’s own religion of half truths.

MarkF – there is no hatred on this site. Only those who are trying to get the message across contained in the CCC. There is no sin in SSA, only saying “YES” to the temptation, by purposely turning one’s back on God and committing homosexual acts or other sexual sins. Everyone has a free will and can will not to commit sin – if he or she determines that God comes first, with HIS help and Grace – pray, pray, pray.

From the homosexuals that have left that lifestyle that I know personally, they have never ever, during their conversion, accused the faithful of hatred towards those who defy the natural law. I appreciate these good men that crossed my path, they have gained a lot of my respect, they love God so much that they truly have compassion for those who are scandalized by homosexual lifestyles, they hold a certain compassion and understanding as to why many feel helpless at this current crises of this growing immoral lifestyle that is being imposed on society. True humility holds compassion for those who are scandalized by these immoral sins that is spreading like cancer. I for one, look to the heavens and can understand why the heavens cry out with vengeance due to these immoral sins. They can not ever be taken lightly.
