Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, gave a 16-minute homily on Sunday, August 4.

This is the feast of St. John Vianney, model priest of those called to parish life, and of St. Dominic, patron of those called to live in a religious community.

St. John Vianney came to his parish, the most backwater parish in southern France, when no one was coming to eucharistic adoration. He wore hair shirts, fasted, got up at 2-3 in the morning to hear confessions. He tried to escape his parish three times.

He preached on humility. God created us. He re-created us by taking on human flesh.

The Eucharist is the source and summit. of our faith. Maybe only 75% of Catholics believe in the eucharistic presence.

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the Olympics, a Frenchman, says he does not believe in God. But when he chose something to mock, he mocked the Eucharist. At first he denied he was mocking the Last Supper. Later he did admit it, “It wasn’t about Dionysius.” The best response I’ve heard is sorrow over those who were raised as Catholics who mocked God.

God is not mocked. These children of God who staged this blasphemy and proudly celebrate what they did are on their way to Hell.
