Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, gave a fifteen-minute homily on Sunday, November 8.
The main message was that after the election we must see that governments come and go, but no man and no party can save us. Father Illo cited the example of Padre Pio who watched a socialist government take over Italy.
But Father was clear about how bad things are: “The powerful in America – those who control our media… celebrate evil … scorn virtue.”
Go to the 5 minute 22 second marker of the video:
“Can we finally resolve to stop sending our children to schools and universities that will make them powerful in their careers but that will promote atheism? Parents tell me that they are going to send their children to this or that school, and I say they will almost certainly lose their faith.”
My parents did not choose my university. Several universities choose me and from there I made a decision. The encounter with educated atheists served to strengthen my belief. These comments seems to encourage ignorance.
I think it depends on the person and on the atheists. You appear to have had a strong faith before you left for college and seem (by your use of the term “educated”) to suggest that the unbelievers you encountered were respectful, well-ordered individuals, not sneering sybarite “activists”. A pastor has to make recommendations base one his discernment of the average individual in likely circumstances, not the exceptional individual in favorable circumstances.
I call b.s.on that statement,Tyquan.I take it you don’t like others who don’t follow your meme.
Tyquan, I do not hear in your words the ring of a steel that has been Battle tested beyond the good fight of ideas. There will come tests of the moral and spiritual sphere where you will make choices that touch soul and being. If you marry a nurse, she will likely be asked to help with life issues such as euthanasia or abortion. If she declined, she will lose her job. Will be willing to enter the fight in the deep waters? Bishop Illo knows that more than half of young Catholics lose their faith after high school. One of the works of the Holy Spirit is to give warning, will you enter the Real fight?
Bishop Illo?
Slip of the keyboard,Anon. But from my Coolpad to God’s ears! We still need him right where he is and Cardinal Cordileone, too. Whoops, that’s just a little later.
Not a chance for Fr. Illo to become bishop Illo. He is too clear, honest, truthful, traditional in his Catholic teaching. That is not the trend I perceive in the episcopal appointments today. I continue to follow Fr. Illo despite his “lower” rank in the hierarchy of clergy because of his very high rank in the hierarchy of truth and faith which leads to salvation..
Neither did St. John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, have a chance of making it to the “top”, but he made it to where it really counts. Let us pray Fr. Illo does too.
Early promotion.
And if you choose to work for the church, you will likely have to work alongside a gay or lesbian married coworker in catholic school or parish. You will be persecuted for standing up for true faith and teaching true faith instead of heretical ideas about morality. The bishop won’t help you if you bring it to his attention. He will do nothing. I know from experience that is true in California..
@ Anonymous at 8:35 am – I know only too well from experience that what you state is absolutely correct. To be frank, there are butch nuns, effeminate choir directors, and many more in RE who are living false Catholic lives. There are also many effeminate clergy who have special friendships. All this makes working in a Catholic parish or school environment very difficult for a faithful Catholic employee in these times.
When I began my teaching career post-military retirement, my first year was at a Catholic school (k-8). The principal, whom I greatly respect, made it clear that my hiring implied that I would not speak on church matters or issues, and that I was expected at Mass when the faculty was called to do so. I was of course reminded that I was not welcome to receive the Eucharist, but could go up for a blessing. The students who were NOT Catholic would follow my lead, and I learned that many parents respected this leading by personal example, but had concerns about a non-Catholic being a teacher. As the science teacher, I chaperoned the annual science camp week, and a few parents were again concerned that my being a non-Catholic created questions of my ability to do so, to watch over the young teen daughters, etc.
How do we know before hand which schools are on the left? How do we judge them and make a wise decision on
where to send our children. We need guidance….please Fr. Illo…..tell us how we do this.
The Cardinal Newman Society has a good list of authentic Catholic colleges, Ignatius Press I think has some courses, the American Life League can probably tell you about some good Catholic high schools, and home schooling is another option.
This comment section is by far the most horrendous use of energy by folks who claim to be good Catholics. Who cares if Nuns are more masculine and Choir directors are more feminine. There is nothing in the Bible against that. Desperately clinging to heteronormativity will not save the Catholic Church or your souls. Fr. Illo is clearly misguided if he thinks that isolation is the only way for salvation. Jesus broke bread with the sinners, Jesus taught in the spaces where most ‘holy people’ wouldn’t dare to enter. Tyquan makes a wonderful point. Those of you who have taken this as an opportunity to cry injustice as the most poisonous parts of Catholic tradition have began to fade should look inward. Additionally the government that Padre Pio witnesses was Fascist not Socialist.
