Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea in San Francisco, gave a nine-minute homily on Sunday, March 2.

Luke’s Gospel is a shorter version of the Sermon on the Mount. The topic is fraternal correction. It’s a duty to correct a brother when he is going off the rails.

We hear the phrase from Pope Francis, “Who am I to juddge?” But that is regarding a person. Even Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot had the spark of God.

How do we correct? We should correct after fasting and prayer. It’s delicate ground we are entering on. We have to see God in the person we are correcting.

Yesterday I failed at fraternal correction. I was at Planned Parenthood on Bush Street. A car pulls up, a man was trembling with anger. I talked back to him. I was not charitable. I should have prepared myself better.

Pray to tbe Mother of Mercy, Mater Misericordiae before you attempt correction of another.
