The following story comes from the July 12 edition of Catholic San Francisco, newspaper of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
The Vatican has approved a complete investigation into the cause of sainthood of a former Mormon wife and mother who reported visions of Jesus and a mission to promote “The Mystical Humanity of Christ.”
(See March 12 story on the opening of the sainthood cause here.)
The March 29 letter of approval from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to Monterey Bishop Richard Garcia was necessary for further investigation into the life of Cora Evans.
Evans, who was baptized in 1935 in Utah after becoming disillusioned by the Mormon faith, died March 30, 1957, near Monterey. She reported visions of Jesus and the saints and a mission from Jesus to promote the “Mystical Humanity of Christ,” the idea that Christ is always within us and we should behave always as Christ would, said Mike McDevitt, a parishioner at Our Lady of the Pillar in Half Moon Bay, who is the promoter of Evans’ cause of sainthood. The spirituality is also focused on praying the Mass.
Evans’ two children, husband Mack, and many family and friends followed her from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints into the Catholic faith.
The letter from Congregation Prefect Cardinal Angelo Amato granted the nihil obstat for “the Cause for Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God, Cora Louise Evans.”
“While canon law clearly states that there is no certainty that Cora Evans will become a saint, the nihil obstat indicates Vatican approval for the process to proceed,” McDevitt said.
Bishop Garcia appointed Marianist Father David Schuyler to take testimony of approximately eight eyewitnesses, including Evans’ daughter, McDevitt said. A theological review of Evans’ writings will begin and a historical commission will collect relics and other materials. The completed dossier will be sent to Rome.
For the Catholic Church to declare someone a saint, a miracle must occur and be verified after the cause of sainthood is opened. That will lead to the person being declared Blessed. After beatification, another miracle must occur and be verified for canonization, that is, sainthood.
uh – oh, mitt romney won’t like this.
first, because she left mormonism, which is not even considered “christian” by most real christians.
second, because it indicates she “was baptized in 1935 in Utah after becoming disillusioned by the Mormon faith,” a reminder that the roman catholic church does not consider mormon ‘baptisms’ to be real baptisms.
so, for those who believe obama is a muslim and who know romney is a mormon, it looks like for thefirst time in american history we have two presidential candidates, NEITHER of whom is even a christian!!!
“The Mystical Humanity of Christ” What a difference in the two CCD stories today. Here in this story we have the beautiful story of a convert named Cora Evans receiving a full investigation into the cause of sainthood and Cora’s Evan’s spirituality also focused on praying the Mass. Then in the other story we have a Jesuit priest who wants everyone to focus on his films during Mass. I think that this Jesuit priest’s story is a cause for a full investigation into the many poor priestly formations that have brought about such a clear lack of understanding in the purpose of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
don’t faint, guys, but CATHERINE makes sense to me on this topic.
max maybe you are growing spiritually/faithfully and are starting to bond with those of higher spirituality? I know that those who are most faithful, as we grow, we tend to bond and connect. God’s people find each other and connect….Jesus does that so beautifully. The division part comes from our sinfulness, pride and unfaithfulness and what the evil one does with when playing with our weaknesses.
Bishop Garcia is a very holy and reverent man. I’m glad he is pursuing this worthy cause.
As we approach the fall elections, my prayer is that Mitt Romney would follow the virtuous, intelligent example of Cora Evans and convert to Roman Catholicism. (I know this will not happen, but a man can dream, can’t he?)
Mr. Romney seems to have solid family values, so moving from an odd American cult (which is based on golden tablets, magical eyeglasses made from stone, and suchlike) to the One True Faith would be a great blessing for our country.
Even adulterous characters like Newt converted to Catholicism, so a faithful family man like Mitt would be a great addition to the flock. Mitt: come on over!
Well, since he is the equivalent of a Roman Catholic Cardinal in the Morman church and Mormonism teaches that Catholics are apostates from the true religion, it would probably take a visit from the angel Gabriel to convince him. Let’s pray for that.
I did have to sit down, Max, without the smelling salts, though. Ha! Ha!
How inspiring.
When did the comments section start to be filled with such vitriol as is the first post?
Happy to read about this saint to be. How is it that weeds grew so quickly in this thread?
why does the roman catholic church NOT accept mormon baptism as valid?
“The Mormons believe that the divinity originated when three gods decided to unite and form the divinity in order to bring about human salvation. Furthermore, the Mormons believe that God the Father is an exalted man, a native from another planet, who has acquired his divine status through a death similar to that of human beings, this being a necessary way of becoming divine. God the Father has relatives and this is explained by the doctrine of infinite regression of the gods who initially were mortal. God the Father has a wife, the Heavenly Mother, with whom he shared the responsibility of creation. They procreated sons in the spiritual world. Their firstborn was Jesus Christ, equal to all men, who acquired his divinity in a pre-mortal existence. Even the Holy Spirit was the son of heavenly parents. The Son and the Holy Spirit were procreated after the beginning of the creation of the world known to mankind. Four gods were directly responsible for the universe, three of whom established a covenant and therefore formed the divinity.”
And, max, you’re saying this somehow is related to the Masonic Lodge?
