The following appeared in She the People section of the Washington Post on August 7.
Democratic dissenters on the issue of abortion have made their case to the platform committee, arguing that the party should change its language enough to allow for some diversity of opinion on the matter and return to the “big tent” approach of the Clinton years.
The effort is probably doomed; NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan is on the committee, and those pushing for the change were happy just to get to testify; they weren’t even allowed to do that four years ago.
This time around, Janet Robert, who founded Minnesota’s progressive talk radio station AM 950, with talkers such as Ed Schultz and Thom Hartmann, was given seven minutes to make the case, and she used it to argue that the party simply cannot win back Congress without Democrats who differ from the ’08 platform on this one issue. She cited a slew of stats, including a Gallup poll from last year in which 44 percent of Democrats said abortion should only be legal “in a few circumstances.”
The plank they want to rewrite says the party “unequivocally” supports Roe v. Wade and spells out that “we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.”
Robert urged the committee members to prove that Democrats are more tolerant and open-minded than their opponents across the aisle: “Republicans are continually telling people they are unwelcome because of who they are, what they believe or where they were born. We are not that party.
There’s no question that Democrats won the House in ’06 by running more moderate candidates in districts the party would otherwise have lost to Republicans.
But the abortion rights lobby writes big checks and wields such unlimited power that I’ve long thought abortion rights have become to the Democrats what the Second Amendment is to Republicans — who are so terrified of the “slippery slope” that even the most common-sense gun restrictions are out of the question. Nobody wants to buck the lobby with bucks….

This is a death-grip for the whole society, a kind of spiritual lockjaw. Only spiritual deliverance with fasting and prayer can break it. The Republicans and so-called “conservatives” are just as unfaithful, they’re just not so flagrant about it. ( with-friends-like-these-who-needs-enemies.org )
You have to go back to the immediate history prior to Roe & Doe, to see how two unlikes, population control & sexual freedom, were melded to institute the present dominion of death. It will destroy our civilization, with only a tiny remnant left to return to The Father.
“In her 1963 classic work ‘The Feminine Mystique’, Betty Friedan does not even mention abortion.” [Abortion wasn’t even on the ideological radar, except in the boardrooms of the Ford and Population foundations.] Zero Population Growth board member, Lawrence Lader, a cofounder of NARAL, recalled that the elective abortion found constitutional in Roe “came like a thunderbolt. (James R. Kelly, “Seeking a Sociologically Correct Name For Abortion Opponents”, Abortion politics in the United States and Canada: Studies in public opinion, Edited by Ted G. Jelen and Marthe A. Chandler. Westport, Conn. : Praeger, 1994. pp. 20-26.)
Charlio,
You are wrong, there is a big difference. The Republican Party will be passing a pro-life, pro-family Platform, the Demoncrat Party will be passing a pro-death, pro-sodomite, anti-Catholic Platform. How can you possibly state there is no difference? Can you name one pro-life person on the Demoncrat Platform Committee? The Chairman of the Republican Platform Committee is strongly Pro-Life, Pro-Family!
Your kind of rhetoric will give us another for and maybe more of the Obamanation. Is that what you want?
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher, Former Officer in both Parties
Oops, that should have been “four”!

The devil hates the truth and he will not allow the truth to be told as he wants ALL of us to be with him in hell and of course, the alleged democrats know that they are wrong, but, they are to chicken to admit it. +JMJ+
Democrat is merely a word; it has changed its values over the years The new brand now stands for all the communist values of statism, sexual libertinism, destruction of marriage, destruction of life. I do not see how a Catholic can vote for these values and claim to remain faithful to Jesus in hope for eternal salvation.
Exactly, Fr. Perozich. I can still hear Governor Casey, Sr. crying out like a prophet in the wildersness, “What about the poor? What about the unborn children?” All the major Democrats did was “cut his throat” and hardly allowed him to speak at all. It has only gotten worse since that. At the least the fewer Republicans that are pro-abortion do not tax us for baby killing. Without the right to life, we have nothing.
No one, in good conscience as a Catholic, can vote for any Democrat, given that Party’s position on abortion. Too bad the USCCB staff and governing bishops, starting with the questionably-esteemed Cardinal Dolan, refuse to state this obvious conclusion. And why is this — because the USCCB, the bishops, and Cardinal Dolan don’t really mind the notion of America’s social direction (yes, it is true), and of the Catholic Church’s drifting with that tide. There would be no abortion, or homosexual marriage, if the Catholic Church in America truly opposed it. All one need do, to judge the insincerity of the bishop’s objection to Obama and the HHS mandate, is to look at the invitation to the Al Smith dinner. No litigant who believed in his case would do this. No moral leader who believed in what he stated as sinful behavior would have anything to do with enabling that sin, except to sit down with the sinner and publicly suggest that he repent. Instead, the good Cardinal will laud Obama, who is simply dripping in blood of the Holy Innocents, saying what a grand American he is, and all of that. Nope, no votes for any Democrat (even if the D is pro-life, as the power granted by election is fungible.
Joke
Thank you, Father Richard Perozich, for your salient comments. Your succinct, accurate analysis of today’s Democratic party leads directly to your inescapable conclusion. I too fail to see how any Catholic who seeks to follow Jesus and dares to hope for the eternal salvation of their immortal souls could possibly choose to vote for any Democrat from now on. The two concepts are incompatible.
Maryanne, I voted for Ronald Reagan twice, George H. Bush twice and George W. Bush twice. One of the main reasons that I voted Republican was their pro-life stance. Sadly, the national Republican party has been taken over by Southern conservatives, most of whom are not Catholic, and most of whom stand in opposition to most Catholic social teaching. Most of these men stand behind the top 1% of our country and get most of their funding from the top 1% of our country. This small group has benefited the most from increased productivity and lower taxes. Sadly the majority of the middle class has not. The extreme right wing of the Republican party supports people of wealth and privilege at the expense of the middle class and most American families. In the past 12 years, real incomes for the 60% of Americans in the middle have decreased while incomes at the top have seen dramatic increases. Because of their treatment of the middle class and working class families in my opinion the Republican party can no longer really be considered pro-life
Mark from PA, has it ever occured to you that the behavior of many Democrats has led to their poverty and the poverty of others. It was the Democrats in some states who put in such things as the “Marriage Penaity” which taxes married heterosexual couples more, and discourages people from doing the right thing. I could go on and on with some of the other laws they have put in that punishes the virtuous, but I have neither the time nor desire. The Republicans are not perfect, but the Democratic Party is in a far worse mess and votes for some atrociously immoral legislation. Their monopoly and immoral legislation has ruined California. The state is broke, the cities are going broke, and we have blocks of empty stores. Besides, one can “vote” against big busnesses by buying at and encouraging small businesses. Oft times the merchandise costs more but is made over here, gets rid of monopolies and supports American.
Last line should say, “American workers”.
Well PA you have certainly drank for the well of the Occupy Wall Street crowd, idiocy. The democrats are nothing more than a criminal organization I am surrounded by their contempt for the True Faith and their out right incompetence when it comes to the economy. You say the Republican party has been taken over by Southern Conservatives really? then how in the world did they nominate a Northeast liberal republican as their candidate for president? I can tell you just believe whatever the media tells you, Obama is the most radical leftist president in history, an outright enemy of the Church, abortion supporter and a hater of the United States and you admit to voting for him.. I detest Obama and pray daily for his defeat.
The American bishops cast their lot with the Democratic Party. Cardinal Bernardin refused to stand against Roe vs Wade when it was just imposed. Now we pay the consequences with free abortion, sterilizations and abortifacients courtesy of Obamacare and Sister Keehan. I would welcome that Democrats include abortion in their platform. They already are the Party of Death Panels, so what is a little more Culture of Death?
Sadly, most Catholic priests, bishops and cardinals voted for Barrack Obama in `08, and will probably do so again, his attacks on the Church notwithstanding. Obama carried the Catholic vote four years ago, too. There is just too much support for Obama among the Catholic Bishops becase of his support for increasing the entitlement-provider role of the federal government, which is a key plank of the USCCB social justice mission statement. It is highly unlikely the US Catholic Bishops will express to the faithful their serious concern with those elements of the Obama agenda they oppose becuase so much of the rest of it they support.
You watch, the Bishops will support Obama again…
Unfortunately this article reprint from the Washington Post does not confront the misinformation in their article when they state “…Affordable Care Act as a vote to fund abortions, although the bill explicitly and repeatedly bars such funding.” The bill does not bar abortion but allows for elective abortion funding contradicting past federal policy. The trickery here is that the ACA establishes an “insurance pool” whereas participants (users) and providers of the insurance plans will directly contribute an ongoing fee (I thinks it is a minimum of $1/month – will have to look again) to this pool, being informed of this only once, when enrolling in the plan and you can’t opt out.
Hey, why stick to “persons?” A guy in Australia “married” his dog. Why not marry your sister/brother or your two (or three or five) best frdnies? What exactly do you thnk marriage is, Jen?
The Democrats have had pro-abortion in their national platform for many years.
Now the Democratic Committee wants to add support for gay-marriage to the platform.
Prior to VOTING, always check the public voting records of all incumbents.
On the internet check public statements, and public actions of all candidates in addition to their political literature.
See “WORTHINESS to RECIEVE HOLY COMMUNION, General Principles” by Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict) on the internet.
Remember that there is nothing proportionate to the murder of approx 1 MILLION babies in the USA each year.
There are 5 non-negotiable items when VOTING –
Abortion; Euthanasia; Embryonic stem cell research; Human cloning; and Gay marriage.
Your are right, Oscar.
It’s not what they say…It’s what they do.
In this regard the Republican party had the presidency, both houses of Congress, and what is supposed to be a conservative Catholic majority in the Supreme Court under Pres. George Bush. And they tossed us peanuts, and not even very many. The abortion industry continued to thrive under Republican governance.
I don’t see how a conservative, concerned Catholic can vote for either the Democrats OR the Republicans.
No, Sal, it is the Republicans, for the most part, who are getting abortion facilities closed and trying to force the ones who stay open to be up to the health code. It is politicians such as Sebelius and Barbara Boxer who fight that. Do you ever hear of a Democrat going after filthy abortion clinics, and there are many. Children’s bodies (tetuses — which is Latin for young ones) are thrown in dumpsters, and there are filthy condicitons inside some of the facilities. Do you ever hear the major media, other than Fox News even comment on such things? Of course not.. Not all Republicans are all that great, but they are far better on the issues than most Democrats. It is also mostly the Democratic Party that is encouraging “same-sex marriage”, which is just asking society to give its approval to a very filthy practice. Who would want to go to a physicians who told you such behavior was healthy? Orientation is one thing, pracitce is totally another.
Pure and simple, abortion is an intrinsic evil. If you do not understand this, google it. No one who claims to be a Catholic and receives the sacraments can vote for a person who champions the killing of the unborn. If you have any problem understanding this, seek out a priest who adheres to the true teachings of the Catholic Church. There is no question about it. Abortion, which is the killing of an unborn child, is a mortal sin. The politicans who vote for and promote abortion are just as evil as those who perform abortions.
Ann T, I would suggest that most politicians in either party in most states or districts will stay as far away from the abortion issue as they can. Except in a few Congresional districts, any politician who is against abortion is sealing his/her defeat in the next election. The Sunday Visitor, this week asked an interesting question. They wondered where all the women were in this fight between the Bishops and the government. Women are not coming to the aid of their Bishops because 90+ percent of them think the government is right. Women are not supporting the Bishops on the same-sex-marriage issue because 60+ percent of Catholics don’t have a problem with it and or support it. Right or wrong, and mostly wrong, the Bishops who promologate the teaching of the church on these issues are out of step with the people in the pews and are considered bigots. It’s not right, but if the Bishops think that they will get much relief from the HHS mandate, they must be smoking something. The republican candidates may say they are against abortion, etc., but if they get in office they won’t be able to do anything about it either.
Bob One,
Every time a Republican Candidate for Office has appealed for funds over the Internet, I have gone to their Webites to see if they were openly pro-life. So far Pro-Life 100%, so called Pro-Choice 0%. Some of their statements are so pro-life I felt like jumping up and down to cheer.
I have happily found great pro-life statements from the Black Americans and Latinos running and incumbents, and now we have a staunch pro-life Irish Catholic candidate for Vice President. What more do you people want.
If I were Biden, I would be shaking in my evil CINO boots at the thought of debating a REAL CATHOLIC ON NATIONAL TV!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher

Ryan will crush that moron Biden in the debate I cannot wait
Says who, Bob? I know a lot of women against abortion. You run with the wrong crowd, Bob, and what does it matter, right is right and wrong is wrong, no matter who tells you it is not. We must speak out when women and children are being harmed by such things, or we are negligent and guilty of sins of omission.
With the selection of Paul Ryan, this has got to send a message to Carholics and Mormons alike. I’m disappointed it was not Rubio but Ryan is excellent in every way…we need Portman in the senate. (he was on the short list) maybe the Dinesh Sousa movie 2016 will really wake people up…it’s playing all over Calif.
Dana,
The Demoncrats in collaboration with Hell-y-Wood have made sure it is only playing in a few select theatres!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,

2016. GO SEE IT! !
All pro-life democrat congressmen could easily meet inside a phone booth.
My friend Dana is in this!!! She’s the one tailnkg about how when you’re fighting for your life, it doesn’t make sense to take a life. Her story is incredible and very powerful.
