…Now, before you get nervous, fear not. I will not be telling you what to do in the ballot box on Nov. 3. It is not the job of a priest of the Catholic Church to tell you for whom you should vote, but rather to assist our people to form their consciences well in line with the Church’s moral teaching. As such, given that there is a great deal of confusion out there as to what the Church teaches regarding voting, here are three main principles that can help you to make your electoral choices.
The first principle is that the Catholic moral theological tradition does not consider all moral matters to be equally important. Among the many significant issues for our adjudication, the question of procured abortion is the preeminent issue for our discernment because all other issues depend on protecting the inalienable right of all human beings to life. Alongside abortion, the Church also privileges the defense of life at the end of its journey as similarly important. Thus, we cannot ever promote so-called “euthanasia” (“mercy killing” or “assisted suicide”). Of course, being “pro-life” does not only mean protecting the right of children to be born, or the right of the sick and elderly to a natural death; rather, the Church also believes in protecting life at all its stages, and this means taking many other issues that threaten life into our consideration (such as poverty, racism, threats to the environment, etc.).
The second principle is the fact that both American political parties often support positions with which the Church cannot agree. Neither political party is entirely acceptable in terms of the Church’s social doctrine. Being Catholic cannot be seen as identical with being either a Democrat or a Republican, even if some may certainly, and justifiably, argue that one party’s official platform is more acceptable to the Church than the other’s in terms of certain issues (such as abortion and euthanasia). We are always Catholics first, partisans of political organizations second.
Finally, the third principle is a practical guide to what this means in terms of our decision-making process. This principle has been best expounded by the then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the one-time Pope Benedict XVI, while he was prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2004. In a letter written to an American Cardinal at that time, entitled “Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion: General Principles”, Cardinal Ratzinger says the following:
A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.
So, in summary, while it is necessary that we protect human life at all its stages, and our voting choices must reflect this, at the same time we are permitted to choose between very imperfect candidates and to vote for one or the other in spite of certain positions they might hold, if there are proportionate reasons for us to do so. Moreover, we can also justly choose to vote for neither candidate, if our well-formed consciences dictate that neither candidate is worthy of our vote. While we consider these matters, though, we must always remember that abortion and euthanasia are tremendous moral evils that must take precedence in our discernment.
The above comes from the Oct. 12 issue of the OC Catholic.
” When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons. ” Almost all Catholics with who I have spoken are strong Biden supporters because they hate Trump. Abortion and like issues do not figure in their preference– at all. It is shocking to hear they could care less about Biden’s record on almost anything other than that he stands to replace Trump. That’s the proportionate reason. I’ve never seen anything like it in my lifetime, other than the unpopularity of Johnson in 1968.
In our lifetime Republicans and Democrats have sifted into two incompatible and irreconcilable systems of morality and government. We are two different countries coexisting within the same geographical borders and alternating the exercise of official government powers. Such an arrangement cannot stand for long. We will have a civil war in our country. It’s already begun.
it used to be that there were minor differences between the political parties with a shared mutual commitment to principles and an understanding of the common good. No more. There’s no more “reaching across the aisle” because the gulf is unbridgeable. It’s now win at all costs and crush your opponent using any means available.
Given the current state of what the parties are and represent, I could not be friends with a Democrat. There would be no basis for friendship because our worldviews would be incompatible.
Dems either admit they are wrong and reverse course, or it’s war. There is no compromise with a party that is accelerating its movement leftward and attempting to redefine basic, natural truths such as those pertaining to sex, gender, race and marriage.
So there it is, “abortion is the preeminent issue” for discernment. Non-Catholic President Trump is more in line with the Church than faux Catholic Biden, whose position on abortion has “evolved” into an even more radical stance that defends baby killing even after birth.
There is no nuanced or sophisticated way to support abortion, though some readers on this site will try. Millstones around the neck await them.
Dona no pacem, since you didn’t answer last time I asked, can you provide some examples of the “hateful rhetoric” of the current administration?
Thank you.
P.S. There is no loneliness in heaven.
The Church does not teach that “millstones around the neck await” anyone who votes for Biden. Meanwhile, people who’d vote for Trump don’t know which Trump they’d actually be electing. Would it be the “I am pro-choice in every respect” Trump? The “I’m very pro-choice” Trump? The “I’m very pro-life except […]” Trump? The “you don’t know what’s on the ballot” Trump? They are all Trump in his own words. Which Trump is on the ballot and which one would take office?
Patricia, you are only fooling yourself with your nonsense
August 2015 Trump stated hat he had “evolved” on the issue of abortion and was pro-life
He supported:
– defunding Planned Parenthood.
– the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act & urged Congress to pass this bill.
– A ban on elective abortions after 20 weeks will protect unborn children.
“We should not be one of seven countries that allow elective abortions after 20 weeks. It goes against our core values.”
– chose Pro-life Indiana Republican Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate
– worked against our tax dollars from going towards abortions both here and abroad, and US’s international relief from being tied to abortion requirements
And much more.
These are facts, not “opinions”
Research it yourself before spreading lies and foolish justifications
Anonymous, nothing I wrote is a “lie” or “foolish”. It is a “fact” that Trump’s outward position “evolved” as he practiced the politics of getting elected president, and it is a “fact” that you do not know Trump’s personal (private) position or what Trump’s outward position would be if he were to be re-elected, when he would no longer be facing the prospect of being re-elected president ever again.
You are right no one knows. But he would have kept much of his base doing little for the pro-life advancement. But he has chosen to do more than any other President in my lifetime. Again you cannot argue the results of Trump’s ACTIONS.
Do we have any chance with Biden to help on the pro-life side?. He has been very clear the last 10 plus years, that he is most interested in following the Democrats and their new platform.. His actions are clearly against the pro-life cause. I pray for him.
But was wondering as he showed his rosary beads if they are nothing more than a good luck charm.
Maybe to make him feel good and maybe get the Catholic vote. I pray he is praying the mysteries daily. Unfortunately his ACTIONS show he is more interested in following the Democratic Party at whatever the cost.
The Party has become too extreme and many are leaving it. Not for Trump, but as independents. I pray ALL Catholics ask the Holy Spirit for guidance before they vote..
Well we certainly know which Biden you’ll be voting for- the one who wants all abortions all the time and taxpayers paying for the carnage. Finding that fanatical position acceptable, and in one who claims to be a practicing Catholic, is reprehensible.
Kristin, I don’t know any Biden who “wants” any abortion, much less “all abortions all the time”, and I don’t find your “fanatical position” or your calumny to be acceptable.
Then tell us Patricia about Any abortion Biden has opposed at Any stage of pregnancy. Yeah, so there isn’t one, not even one.
Interesting to note that only liberal Catholics cling to the notion that the killing by dismemberment of unborn babies is not worth prioritizing over far less pressing matters. That’s fanaticism, and pointing out your support of such behavior is not calumny, it’s fact. The truth hurts, so does abortion.
Hushed tones of a liberal woman named Patricia supporting child murder.
The truth is, the abortion rate would not be as high as it is today if so many Catholics did not look the other way and act like it’s no big deal. Our Representatives know we will still support them if they vote to promote abortion and abortion funding. And yes unfortunately, Joe does promote abortion because his voting shows he does.
Catholics swing the vote, so, we as a Church are responsible now for this evil we have let grow into a monster in our country. God did not want this. We can only blame ourselves and need to stop the bloodshed. of the most innocent. The Party platform has been pro-abort.. Read it.
Kristin, Biden has said over and over again that he is personally opposed to abortion in keeping with the teachings of the Church.
Anonymous, Biden has been an abortion fanatic far decades and has spoken, promoted, and voted in support of baby killing with glee. If you believe that is in keeping with the teachings of the Church then you are in desperate need of Catholic catechesis so good luck with that.
To Anonymous, regarding your post, of Oct 21, 2:37pm. What on earth does “personally opposed” (to Baby Murder) really mean?Too casual a statement, for a very serious crime! That’s like Pontius Pilate saying, “I am “personally opposed” to executing Christ– but I guess I will go ahead and have Him murdered anyway— since that is what you Jewish leaders want!” Hypocrite! Before Almighty God– an unjust, spineless liar, down to his bones! “Personally opposed?” He doesn’t care at all to save the precious lives of poor babies, on Death Row, in their mothers’ wombs!
The one who isn’t senile Joe Biden, who is obviously merely a placeholder for Kamala to become president when Joe resigns.
Oh come on Patricia. Mr. Trump’s record as president speaks for itself. Never been a more pro-life occupant of the White House!
I believe anyone who votes for a pro-abortion candidate will have to answer to God for the millions of little girls/boys who were executed in the womb. By voting for that pro-death candidate they are cooperating in these evil acts. You can’t claim ignorance because everyone knows that Biden is pro-abortion. And certainly Trump actions speak louder than his words when implementing policies. He keeps his word.
Whether it’s in paying our taxes or in some other way, “cooperating in evil acts” can occur, and the priest addressed such concern in the article when he said: “When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.”
As to your claim that “everyone knows that Biden is pro-abortion,” that’s vague and I strongly doubt literally “everyone” (or perhaps anyone) knows whatever exactly you mean by that. I don’t even know what exactly you mean by “pro-abortion. For example, if “pro-abortion” includes having a publicly-professed position whereby abortions remain legally permissible with qualifications, then of course, both Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden can be considered “pro-abortion”. The term can be interpreted in quite a number of ways, including in ways where neither Mr. Trump nor Mr. Biden would qualify as “pro-abortion”. And in further regard to “ignorance”, the candidates’ positions on abortion are neither crystal clear (perhaps deliberately) nor cast in stone, and the candidates, their words and actions don’t always mean or intend what we think they do.
Every election! The Democrat isn’t really THAT pro-choice and the Republican isn’t really THAT pro-life and the are other things that the Democrat will do will help prevent more abortions than the pro-life candidate.
The Catholic Democrats that I personally know don’t really care about abortion. They don’t really care about social issues. They are just Democrats who vote Democrat. They would not vote Republican under any circumstances. They pretend that they care but they really don’t. The Catholic Democrats that I personally know are not very good people. They go to Mass, they do some charity work (and let everybody know about it) all the while they are doing evil in their everyday life by abusing family members or lying or covering up the wrongdoing of others.
Keep trying to convince yourself. Your choice…choose life or death.
Paying taxes is not equivalent to killing someone. Just look at what Trump has done as compared to Biden. While Trump promotes life Biden promotes death. That’s it. No ifs, ands, or buts. It’s that simple.
Actually, he said “the question” of abortion is the preeminent issue “alongside” (not higher or above) “the defense of life at the end of its journey”, calling it “also privileged” and “similarly important”, and then he tossed in an “also” in regard to “protecting life in all its stages” without specific clarity as to where that ranks, and thus some readers might read it as saying that protecting life at all its stages is “similarly important”. Very notably, he did not limit “the question” of abortion to the legality of abortion and made no claim that making abortion illegal ranks higher (or lower) than other actions that can be taken to reduce/stop abortion or to protect life at any stage. Respecting “nuances” such as these are not a “way to support abortion”. Rather, it is respecting what the priest said..
Wrong. The priest wrote, “Of course, being “pro-life” does not only mean protecting the right of children to be born….”
Protecting the right of children to be born necessarily means 1) establishing that right in law and 2) enforcing that right.
Preeminent: surpassing all other (issues) This Priest sums it up at the end while contradicting himself throughout with lumping non-urgent issues with this urgent one. He states: “While we consider these matters, though, we must always remember that abortion and euthanasia are tremendous moral evils that must take precedence in our discernment.” And let’s not forget every day some little girl/boy is killed in their mother’s womb. It’s not an issue where we can dismiss and consider it equivalent to other secondary issues.
If someone’s not paying you for all this proabortion commentary and it’s just your own beliefs, as a Catholic I urge you to go to confession. Ugly evil going on with these false arguments of yours, get spiritual help asap.
You are right Kristin, people on this site are trying to make abortion alright when it never is, all those rants from Patricia for example. Trump has lots of prolife accomplishments these Biden people are discounting and lying about. They probably aren’t Catholic anyway but sorry they are proabortion.
No seamless garment…. ever.
Don’t count on that.
Mother Teresa said that the chief cause of war was the killing of the unborn.
.”Better to serve in heaven than to reign in hell.”
Thank you Anne. Well said.
You are welcome, James. Actually I put my post in the wrong place, but the words are true nonetheless.
My prediction: Biden will win and Dems will have majorities in both houses in Congress. In the first six months they will pass a bill making abortion at any time during pregnancy a federal right, and “Catholic” Joe Biden will sign it into law. That way they don’t have to worry about Roe being overturned: a right to abortion will be federal law, and even a conservative/originalist-leaning Supreme Court will have to uphold the law as constitutional. Overturning Roe will become moot.
They will do the same for same sex marriage and transgender rights. All signed into federal law by “Catholic” Joe Biden.
“Catholic” Joe Biden, along with “Catholic” Nancy Pelosi and so many other “Catholics,” will undo forty years of prolife efforts by passing federal abortion legislation.
Get ready. Life’s about to get a lot worse. The Dems will absolutely steamroll over every conservative, traditional, religious principle when they take over the government.
Did you predict a Hillary win in 2016? How did that work out for you?
No, but thanks for trying to play.
Bishop Rick Stika of Knoxvile wrote this:https://etcatholic.org/2020/10/tough-questions-that-you-must-answer/
I noticed on his FB page that someone said that it helped them because they were still “on the fence”.
Here is the Californians For Life Pro-Life Voter Guide https://californiansforlife.org/pro-life-voter-information/
What part of the Republican platform is unworthy of the Catholic vote? I know the Democratic platform supports abortion and homosexual marriage. Catholics cannot vote Democrat. Period.
Del, a very succinct, cogent reply. Thank you.
I am personal friends with this amazing priest and believe you me this holy priest would never condone the support of taking innocent life.
Let’s get something straight. If you vote for Biden/Harris your not Catholic. Might be shock to some. This is also some breaking news, neither Biden or Pelosi is Catholic. The Catholic Church is headed towards a major split between those that believe what is in the Bible and the Cafeteria Catholics who pick and choose. The Jesuits, Maryknoll and current pope will lead the Cafeteria Catholics.
Let’s get something straight: Who you vote for does not define who is catholic and who is not catholic
Well ya, it actually does because Catholics cannot participate in evil and voting for those who support it, is evil.
Fr. Altman: You cannot be Catholic & a Democrat. Period. (Part I)
Anonymous– “let’s get something straight, eh?” Your vote is a big responsibility before God! A Catholic must never vote for what is evil, before Almighty God!
