The following is a December 2 Angelus article by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, Archbishop emeritus of Los Angeles:
Talk of deporting the 11 million undocumented immigrants was common on the campaign trail. So too were allusions to rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program, which provides close to 770,000 young people protection from deportation and work authorization.
Known as the DREAM students, they were brought here by the parents at a young age and did not break the law of their own volition. They are bright and talented contributors to the nation and its future leaders. They are Americans in everything but citizenship.
According to a study by the Center for Migration Studies of New York, these students are deeply embedded in U.S. society.
> 85 percent have lived in the United States for 10 years or more.
> 93 percent have at least a high school degree
> 43 percent attended college or graduated from college
> 89 percent are employed and paying taxes
> 91 percent speak English very well or exclusively.
To remove protections from this group is foolhardy and contrary to our best interests. If the national interest is served by supporting hard-working, intelligent young people and allowing them to flourish, then continuing the DACA program is the best way forward.
Pope Francis captures this sentiment well. “Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity,” he wrote in 2014. “They are children, women and men who leave their homes for various reasons, who share a legitimate desire for knowing and being, but above all being more.”
These young immigrants are now part of our social fabric — they are in our neighborhoods, workplaces and schools. They have forged bonds with U.S. citizens who know them as people, not numbers. They are contributing their energies to the country and have fought for their rights and their right to be part of our nation. Some are serving in the U.S. military.
Should DACA be eliminated, some have called for churches and communities to protect them by not cooperating with immigration enforcement in the effort and by providing them sanctuary. I add my voice to that call.
Martin Luther King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Deporting these young people to a country they do not know is an injustice that threatens all of us, as it flies in the face of fairness and human decency. It would weaken our communities and diminish us as a nation.
President-elect Trump has stated that his Administration would begin deporting immigrants who have committed criminal offenses, broadly defined. However, he also stated that he would consider whether the remaining undocumented population should be allowed to stay, calling many of them terrific people.
It is clear from the evidence that DACA recipients fall into this category. Instead of creating fear and throwing their lives into disarray, President-elect Trump should continue the DACA program and protect these impressive young people. Such a step would go a long way in keeping America great.
Ah, Roger Mahoney. The gift that just keeps giving.
Roger Mahoney and the best interests of young people. Hey, is this one of those fake news stories that have been making the rounds? You almost had me there.
After all the damage and scandal he has brought to the faith , his advocating protection is bitterly laughable considering his lack of protection for the children , reputation and resources of this diocese. He is toxic and a reminder to the faithful and the outside world of his moral confusion and horrible judgement, any cause he advocates is poisoned by his very presence, his hubris and need for attention blinds him to this.
Cardinal Mahoney had his chance to protect the young, and he did not do it. Now he cries “wolf” again, and we are supposed to jump to the rescue. As far as I am concerned, he has called “wolf” once too often. I do not believe him. One person he could not fool was Mother Angelica.
Why is this deeply flawed man not in a very austere monastery somewhere, doing penance for his many sins and offenses? Was he not forbidden to excersize any role in the Church by Gomez? So much for justice.
I need to clarify something I said in my post yesterday, Dec. 5, at 6:34 pm, but first I want to wish everyone a Blessed St. Nicholas of Myra Day — you know the one who “decked” a heretic.
Now about my previous post. I was not accusing Cardinal Mahoney of heresy nor was I accusing him of ever molesting anyone himself. As far as I know there is no evidence of him ever having done so. What I was saying is that I do not trust his judgment. Open borders make it easier for abducting people and fleeing prosecution. The walls need to be build, with armed troops if needed, but secured bridges and gates are needed too.
Dear C. Mahoney, The people have spoken. Let’s NOT protect ANY immigrants that are not here legally! That is a wrongful redistribution of hard earned ( legal) American resources. But feel free to give them a share of your wealth to take back to their home lands. Wouldn’t it be lovely if our Cardinals/Bishops act on their speeches and send these brave youth back to their homes, families, friends, churches and communities with a suitable donation, a ‘stake’ in their future out of their personal funds? That could help them become productive citizens in their countries VS stealing their lives to fund USCCB charity grants. Because that is what it is all about….the money given for these future lives. The USCCB makes money off the…
Continued……………..The USCCB makes money off the backs of immigrants. Lots of money. Money, money, money. Must keep the charity gravy train going even against the laws of the host country. I think the Cardinals/Bishops (like their elite establishment ilk) have become too used to spending other peoples money without listening to reason & common sense. Not anymore, God willing. America has rejected this insanity and for good reasons. Let’s hope it happens soon enough to save jobs and the country for all the next legal generations.
HASN’T THIS MAN DONE ENOUGH HARM ALREADY?
YET HE JUST CANNOT SEEM TO KEEP HIS MOUTH CLOSED!!
I can hardly wait for Trump to be sworn in as President. BUILD THAT WALL. The United States has a right to control who enters the country just like any other country on the face of the earth. First of all deport all illegals from what ever country who have committed criminal acts and who have overstayed their visa’s. Next, deport the parents who illegally entered the country bringing their young children with them. If the now over 18 illegals want to stay in the States then there should be some process for them to follow. And stop giving citizenship to the children of illegals who just happen to be born in the States.
Our country is becoming more divided and more violent. Is a “Civil War” coming? I pray that Marshall Law is not imposed before the presidential inauguration!
Cardinal Mahony would be better using his bully pulpit to protect the unborn rather than illegals. This is something he did not do while in his “office” as Cardinal. He is a voice crying in the wind. Someone should take him by the hand and gently lead him to the door marked “exit”. His reign is over – thank goodness. He did so much damage while in office and should now be doing reparation.
I have been told that Cardinal Mahony left a trail of hurt people behind him in the Dioceses of Fresno, Stockton, and also, most likely, in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We all know about his treatment of Mother Angelica. I agree with Diego: someone really should take him by the hand and gently lead him to the door marked “exit.”
And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28
Jesus is always merciful to truly contrite sinners. To this day, Scott Peterson sits on death row in San Quentin for murdering his young, pregnant wife, (Lacy Peterson) and their unborn son. Scott Peterson still fails to publicly admit that he murdered his wife and son or publicly repent for what he did. Without that repentance, can you imagine, how unbelievably disconnected, from reality, it would be if Scott Peterson publicly tried to be the voice of “Let’s protect young pregnant women.” Cardinal Mahony actually does more harm to souls by not publicly repenting from straying…
continued…
Once again….Cardinal Mahony actually does more harm to souls by not publicly repenting from straying from the True Faith. Mother Angelica was truly Cardinal Mahony’s best friend in this life.
And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell. – Matthew 10:28
And Cardinal Mahony’s protégé, Bishop McElroy is following in his footsteps….but even more so. Bishop McElroy’s thinking is even more skewered than his mentor. God help us all. Pray like our lives and eternal souls depend on it…..they do. This is the Battle of LePanto but in 2016!
“The floor of Hell is paved with the skulls of bishops.” – St. John Chrysostom
Eminence, your time for poisoning the minds of your Catholic flock is past. It is nice that you recite some thoughts from Dr. MLK, a good and valuable man. But following Dr. King means nothing if you are sinful and fail to attain Heaven.
Also good to see that you try to warn President-Elect Trump about the need to keep DACA. Too bad you do not warn the many, many clergy and lay people in LA about their sexual sins (and other sins) which seem to prevail there. Tell homosexuals to stop having sex and fornicators to stop living together and adulterers to return to their original spouses, or to obtain an annulment, or to live as brother and sister. Nothing you are saying matters to souls that will be judged.
Hosemonkey, yes Bishop Gomez did try to remove him from some of the Church’s celebrations such as celebrating Confirmation. However, when in Rome he could not get Pope Francis’ cooperation and was told not to do anything!
This is the same Roger Cardinal Mahony who conspires with Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry to treat pederast priests with psychologists that were also lawyers so the Diocese would be protected by attorney-client privilege. This only emerged after the Cardinal paid a $640,000,000.00 settlement to victims of homosexual priests. Not a person to give advice about children.
In case you did not know, Mahony made his career as the Church link to Aliskyite Cesar Chavez, another piece of work.
To: Cardinal Roger Mahoney
Have you No Shame sir ??? Your record of complicity with friends and fellow priests who are pedophiles for over 20 years in your reign disqualifies you to even be around children, let alone pretend to advocate for the welfare of young immigrants. It’s over for you. Please go away and be happy you are not in prison. http://www.snapnetwork.org
