In an op-ed published Friday in the Wall Street Journal, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York lamented that the Democratic Party’s shifting principles have effectively shut out and alienated orthodox Catholics.
Dolan cited the Democrat’s current opposition to school choice programs and tax credits for education, along with their unwavering support for abortion rights, among the reasons why he is disappointed with the party in its current state. Dolan said believes that the Democrats of today have abandoned many of the tenets that made the party attractive to Catholics generations ago.
In the past, Dolan explained, when waves of Irish immigrants arrived in the United States, their respect for the sanctity of life and their concern for the poor led them to embrace the Democrats, who welcomed them to the party. Dolan even recounted his own grandmother warning him that, “We Catholics don’t trust those Republicans.”
“Such is no longer the case,” Dolan wrote, which is a “cause of sadness to many Catholics.” himself included.
He pointed to the party’s recent refusal to support incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL), who is one of the few remaining pro-life Democrats in Congress, in a tight primary race.
Last April, DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement that “Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health,” and that this was “not negotiable.” Recent polling showed just under a quarter of Democrats believe that abortion should be illegal in all or most circumstances.
Dolan was particularly critical of a proposed New York law titled the “Reproductive Health Act,” which he says would “morbidly expand” the “most radical abortion license in the country.” The New York State Assembly is overwhelmingly Democrat.
“For instance, under the proposed Reproductive Health Act, doctors would not be required to care for a baby who survives an abortion. The newborn simply would be allowed to die without any legal implications,” wrote Dolan.
What’s more, Dolan explained, is that he feels the Democrats are making it harder for low and middle-class children to get an education at a Catholic school.
“In recent years, some Democrats in the New York state Assembly repeatedly blocked education tax credit legislation, which would have helped middle-class and low-income families make the choice to select Catholic or other nonpublic schools for their children,” said Dolan. The cardinal said this type of legislation impedes the mission of these schools to serve poor, often immigrant, children.
Dolan admitted that while he has “ had spats and disappointments” with politicians from both major political parties in the United States, he is particularly upset by the Democratic Party’s swing in a direction that excludes people like his grandmother.
“But it saddens me, and weakens the democracy millions of Americans cherish, when the party that once embraced Catholics now slams the door on us.”

We need another political party badly. We need a good one. We need a moral one.
First, what took him so long to realize it and/or say it? I’ve known that for ten years.
Second, he didn’t go far enough: Democrats haven’t just abandoned Catholics; they are enemies of Catholics.
It is not possible today to be a faithful Catholic and a supporter of the Democrat Party because Democrats hold positions that are antithetical to non-negotiables of Catholic faith. To be a Democrat today is to be an enemy of Catholicism.
So the good Cardinal favors the party which just enacted huge income tax cuts for the rich and super-rich? Permanent tax cuts for corporations but temporary tax cuts for all individuals? Where are the Cardinal’s specifics on what changes proposed legislation should have to be better?
As to Illinois Rep. Lipinski, he is a second generation family holder of that seat, having taken over from his father. Much is changing in Chicago. The ole European ethnic blocs are no longer as powerful. By the way, Lipinski did barely win his primary and very likely will win the general election.
Things are permanent until terminated and temporary until extended. A reduction in corporate rates reduces the unfairness of double taxation at both the corporate and shareholder level, which makes sense considering corporations are only an invention of government to help their individual owners anyway.. Further, ANY money not taxed remains in the private sector, and not in the hands of government. It is myth that tax dollars can be used to help anyone when the country is 21 Trillion in debt, and further myth that the deficit can be reduced by raising taxes. Your post is left wing talking points. Hitler was a socialist.
Well at least they raised the tax credits for families with children. There are republicans, though, who do not have Christian values and push so-called same-sex “marriages”. I suppose there are Republicans, too, who are profiting from the contraception and abortion industries.
There is no comparison to the Democrats position of promoting the killing of 60,000,00 SIXTY MILLION unborn HUMAN AMERICANS – not even close
I’m wondering what took Cardinal Dolan so long to figure this out. The migration of Democrats from the great western intellectual tradition of inquiry and truth (i.e. liberal) to a repository of anti-liberal views and attitudes has been going on since at least the 1980s. Dr. Allan Bloom details this migration in academia in his 1987 book “The Closing of the American Mind.” Now-a-days, one is mostly likely to find traditional “liberal” views in Republicans and at small, conservative Catholic universities.

The reality of life is that organizations do not have to accommodate you. If Catholics don’t agree with them, they should go elsewhere. you should not belong to an organization that supports evil and mortal sin.
So I guess this puts to rest the lie that Catholics can vote for Democrats in good conscience? Are you listening Cupich? McElroy? McGrath? Gomez? Turbin? And all the others who peddle the lie that voting for Democrats can be morally justifiable or even obligatory?
The California Catholic bishops beg to differ. They think the Democratic Party is the political incarnation of the Body of Christ.
Now he knows how traditionalists feel about the Church.
There is really not much need for parties anymore. With the Internet, anybody can get their message out but a lot of states make it hard to get on the ballot. Parties are kind of a corruption of the system that Americans just got used to. They are a dinosaur that needs to go extinct.
And yet he and many Catholics will continue to support the Democrat party, aka the Party of Death. As the Cardinal points out, it’s the Orthodox Catholics who have been abandoned. Catholics in name only have no problem with the party of “abortion on demand and without apology”. They should, big time.
The Demos have always been the party of slavery, the KKK, George Wallace, and overall murder. As the so-called party of the worker, their labor unions are incubators for socialist/communist/revolutionary ideals. What Abraham Lincoln did as a Republican to end slavery means nothing to them. Demo politics have killed 61 million in the womb since 1973, and Dolan wakes up now? Blacks comprise 15% of the population and suffer 40% of abortions. The Democrats are still killing and subjugating Blacks. 54% of self-identified Catholics voted for Obama twice (how dumb can you get). The essence of socialism – the take over by an elite minority and the oppression of the rest, who are all “equal.”
That was obvious when Obama was running for President, only at that time lots of Catholic clergy were carrying water for him because they were blind to the truth.
Where has Cardinal Dolan been all these years? with blinders on? It started when the Democrats, especially the Clintons, would not let pro life Governor Casey Sr., speak at their convention and made it clear then that no pro life Democrat would ever make it to the top in that party. Then they went after John Cardinal O’ Connor because he refused to let people endorsing homosexual practices march in the St. Patrick’s parade,, some even taking their clothes off on the steps of St. Patrick Cathedral.
Glad to hear there are others out there that have connected the dots and see the truth; that the ‘Commucrats’ are what they truly are. If anyone is to blind to see it, they ought to connect the dots. Start learning about what is going on from politically uncorrect professional news sources of true information. A person who gets married with the hopes to change his/her mate, is that a sign of love? No! When Obama and Clinton’s Big Platform’s were to transform America, was that a sign of their love and respect for America? No, not at all. Transformation Obama did following his hero Saul Alinsky a known communist, pushing us closer and closer to communism, with Hillary following suit. Obama pushed abortions leading to genocide in his own race! He conspired with the muslims, opened our border for terrorists and illegal immigrants/criminals to seep through to destroy America. He’s trying now to salvage his work by conspiring to impeach Trump and…
Yes it is really disheartening to see how the church leaders and self-proclaimed modern catholics went along supporting Obama and Clinton when these politicians were so anti-Catholic.
Unfortunately, Catholics haven’t abandoned Democrats.
The interesting thing here is the FACT is the democrat political party has NEVER supported Catholic teaching. The liberal press sold both the clergy and Catholics on the idea but in practice the democrats are anti- Catholic.
It will be interesting to see whether Cardinal Dolan will attend the 2018 Alfred E. Smith Dinner, and whether he will be as supportive of Democrat Party causes as he was at the 2017 event.
How about it Your Eminence?
After reading his WSJ piece I wrote to Cardinal Dolan’s office to ask him to do away with the Al Smith Dinner that is held every year (or at least during the general election year).. or at least, disinvite all Democrats. It is truly shameful to see him laughing it up at that occasion with the same people who actively work against our principles
According to the Alfred Smith Foundation”s website, Cardinal Dolan is Board Chair of thst organization. Hillary was honored with the organization’s “Happy Warrior Award” in 2016, with Michael Bloomberg in 2015, Barak O’bama in 2012. Go guess why a purported Catholic organization honors those who advance the idea that killing babies is worthy of honor.
A lot of Catholics confuse right-wing politics with Catholicism in reaction to the Democratic infernal platform. All Catholics and other Christians should support the American Solidarity Party.

Just talk.
It only means something when you walk the walk.
This means that Cardinal Dolan will need to excommunicate pro-abort “Catholics,” and will need to tell Catholics that it is a mortal sin against their soul to vote for any candidate who supports the killing of innocent unborn human beings.
Lead by example!!!!
Actually we are political orphans. The Democratic Party is pro-abortion and the current Republican Party is against Catholic social teaching from Rerum novarum all the way through Just War to the teachings of Pope Francis. It’s a scandal that a Catholic Republican leader like Paul Ryan can actually promote the teachings of Ayn Rand.
You obviously don’t understand Catholic social teaching. I recommend you read up about subsidiarity and then you’ll see that it aligns quite well with conservatism. That’s just one example. If you erroneously believe that Catholic social teaching means supporting big government welfare and such, then of course you’ll conclude that conservatism doesn’t align with Catholic social teaching. But you’d be wrong.
Pretty telling too that you didn’t mention the Democrat Party’s support for all things LGBT as a reason they don’t square with Catholicism.
Our Church traditionally has hewed a middle ground balancing subsidiarity with solidarity. Rejecting both Socialism and Libertarian, unregulated robber Barron Capitalism. As a lesbian, I appriciate anyone who wants to protect me from being fired etc..just for being me.
C&H,, Ryan is a joke and you are dead silent on nearly every single so called Catholic Democrat who promote and defend the teachings of Margaret Sanger. Every single one
You make my point. As Catholics we reject the ideas of both Rand and Sanger. We are not it total agreement with either party. Ryan isn’t a joke, he’s the Speaker of the House for Heaven’s sake.
Let’s see how many Democrat Party turncoats His Eminence embraces when it comes to raising money for Catholic causes. Remember, the power to absolve debt appears stronger than the power to absolve sin. Hope Cardinal Dolan does not suffer from memory loss when checks are being written.
Love the way bishops (because he’s about the same as many) ‘get the memo’ about the Democrat party about forty years too late.
The good Cardinal is right in that the Democratic Party has changed…but, then, so has the Catholic Church. The many sex and fiscal scandals have weakened the Church’s teaching authority and influence. It appears that Cardinal Dolan has decided to throw his lot in with the Republicans. The party of the rich…and the warmongers. Perhaps, he should re-read Pacim in Terris or Populorum Progressio. The Catholic Church may very well become the church of the 1 percenters!
Notwithstanding the scandals, the Church has the promise of Divine assistance. It has survived even though the odds were against Holy Mother Church. The Church always had its internal scoundrals, including Peter, who within hours of the institution of the Eucharist, denied Our Lord three times. And except for John one other betrayed Him and the remaining 9 fled as cowards.
Gosh – so much for revisionist hyrstory
Wilson, a Demi-Krat = WW-1
Rosevelt, a Demi-Krat = WW-2
Truman, a Demi-Krat = Korea
Kennedy / Johnson Demi- Krat = Viet Nam
Reagan, a Republican = Grenada
Demi-Krat Slick Willie shot cruise missiles in to Iraq, but aside from scaring a few camels did little
Republican Bush 1 = Kuwait (I was there for that one)
Republican Bush 2 = Post 9-11 War on Terror, which Barry ‘on the down low’ Soetoro almost lost, although he did destabilize Lybia, Egypt and many other hot spots
I am a pro-life Mexican American practicing Catholic. The current President’s remarks about Mexican Americans are disgusting. I was born in the USA and honorably served in the US Navy, and yet, since the 2016 election I face increasing racist remarks almost daily. I’ll never support the Republican Party. Pray for us OLG.
Hector, why not just say you’re American? Born here, military service, do you really feel that connected to a foreign country? Remember the motto E Pluribus Unam, out of many, one. God Bless America!
Hector, I think the president is talking about some of the people from Mexico, such as notorious drug lords, not all Mexican people. He talks about Europeans and others he thinks are bad too. I have gone to Mexico many times in the past. I never took anything illegally over there and never brought back anything illegally. I tried to obey Mexican law when there, out of respect, and dressed modestly and appropriately. We need to respect our country’s and other country’s laws for our own protection.
Hector, Yeh, the president says crappy things but meantime the Democrats vote to kill babies. The president asked them to support an amnesty for the dreamers, the Democrat Leaders balked. They don’t really want it, if they did they would have voted for it during Obulls first term, when they hay 60% in both houses. They didn’t even bring it up then, you’ve been played. No wonder. How can you trust anyone who says it is ok to kill babies? As a Catholic, you need to repent if you vote for the babies killers.
Lou: Please note I did not assert the Church will disappear! In the meantime we are members of an incredibly shrinking Church. As reported in recent survey data, the “nones” group (those who do not affiliate with a religion) is a growing group in the USA. Guess who makes up a large percentage of the “nones” group? Ex-Catholics! We have all experienced the sad phenomenon of a closing Catholic parish or school. Unfortunately this will continue to occur with greater frequency.
William,
Thete is nothing in my post to imply that you said the Church will disappear, quite the contrary. The Universal Catholic Church (both the Latin Rite and the 22 other Eastern Catholic traditions) has survived and will survive because of the promise of Divine assistance from Jesus himself. Whether it will grow or shrink is another matter. However, large or small it will survive.
The Democrats are hostile to religion, period, if it interferes with their sexual agenda in the slightest. But the Republicans are no Saints, either. They give the impression of not giving a hoot about the poor.
