The following is a June 14 release from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reaffirmed by a unanimous voice vote on June 13 a recent statement of the [bishops’] Administrative Committee regarding the HHS mandate.

At the end of their hour-long discussion of religious freedom in the United States, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the conference, asked the body of bishops if it would be willing to declare its approval of “United for Religious Freedom,” the unanimous statement of the Administrative Committee issued on March 14. Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, California seconded Cardinal Dolan’s motion, which was put to the body by a voice vote and unanimously affirmed.

“United for Religious Freedom” describes the bishops as “strongly unified and intensely focused in … opposition to the various threats to religious freedom in our day,” and explains that the HHS mandate “demands our immediate attention.” The document identifies three basic problems with the mandate: “an unwarranted government definition of religion,” “a mandate to act against our teachings,” and “a violation of personal civil rights.”

Not strong enough! Catholics cannot , must not and will not obey the HHS mandate!!!

What a waste of resources. The always useless USCCB, spending Church money, held another meeting to issue another mushy statement affirming another mushy statement of another USCCB committee that was issued several months ago. Did the bishops actually spend all these months meeting and debating the obvious? This sort of thing should take about an hour or so to decide and declare, not months. Moreover, one always must be suspicious of anything that B. Blaire “issues”. The USCCB, and the dubious “Order of Bishops” need to be disbanded. The sole reason for a bishop is to protect the Church as it leads its believers toward salvation. They are not political (or social, or economic) persons. Instead, we now have a growing, and expensive, Catholic political mouthpiece that is embarrassing in its complete ineffectiveness to assure Catholic orthodoxy. What a complete shame.

i’m glad they were unanimous in this vote…but…doesn’t cardinal dolan always act like he’s at some football game? it seems he’s perpetually hollering like the team just make a touchdown or something! some decorum, eminence, please. or switch to decafe.

A government that can re-define marriage can re-define religion, too.

To bad it was by voice vote, would love to know each Bishops vote, at least the C Mahoney faction lost again, Thank You Cardinal Dolan for your inspiring leadership, what a breath of fresh air for a change…MGB

I hope that we all continue to pray for our bishops during this time for faithfulness and fidelity to our Lord, that we head their call and participate in the fortnight for freedom by fasting and prayer, especially Eucharistic Adoration. We have overslept in a sense and now have been awoken to a thief threatening our life as Christians and it is now time to grab our rosaries and call upon our army of saints and angels to claim a victory for Christ. God Love You.

In response to the posting by “St. Christopher,” you obviously have deep feelings on this matter. On reflection, does your criticism (rather than support) of the Bishops help or hurt the Church? Perhaps you should meditate on the writings of St. Catherine of Siena for enlightenment.

PAPA, it was unanimous.

In many ways I cannot but agree with St. Christopher’s allegations. The current goings- on in the Vatican has just reinforced the weakness of faith and political greed and all of it’s ugliness at the highest levels in my mind. Worse yet is the mass redefining of morals by formerely esteemed orders such as the Jesuits et. al. Right now, my faith is in the Pope but he is 85 and/or maybe will be the victim of a “Borgia” plot which at one time I believed was impossible. I hope the reformation of the church begins with the bishops leading to the cardinals themselves. Some of them must have lost faith after what I call the total relaxation of everything after Vatican II.

@max: Exactly, after all isn’t this the same Timothy Cardinal Dolan that wore a cheesehead to Mass when he was in Milwaukee?

Clinton is that true? Wow

All though I think it should have been done a long time ago, this resolution puts more teeth into the Bishops’ statement, and will be noticed by politicians. I do not agree with those who think it is a useless thing. Yes Bishop Blaire may have seconded it because he knows how bad he looked with his prior statement, but just maybe he is also getting more religion. Pray for him and all the Bishops. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

folks from ONENEWSNOW by afa : A pro-family activist who works to expose the truth about homosexuality says it was a “sad day” when President Barack Obama recently hosted a reception for radical homosexual activists at the White House. The president also stated: “As long as I have the privilege of being your president, I promise you [that] you won’t just have a friend in the White House, you will have a fellow advocate ….”Peter LaBarbera, founder and president of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality, laments the president’s comments.

Our Bishops and Cardinals need to speak up and defend our values. They should speak clearly and declare that it is a sin to vote for Obama! Some in charge had no right to push to end the death penalty by their statements made but they have a duty to protect marriage, the unborn and our religious freedoms! Mr. Obama is no God fearing man, his actions to advocate for perversion and persecute those with values tells us so. The pro-gay rights crowd know this and they don’t care about other issues but gay ones, they will vote for Obama, they could care less for pro-life issues as well, their gay agenda’s are far more important than preserving religious rights, morals and freedom! Their sexual lifestyles are something that they want imposed on all of this country! We have been fools to think that they were harmless and we should feel sorry for them, but look how far their agenda’s are being carried out! They are being imposed! We can’t impose our religion on them but they can impose their homosexuality on us and our children through education! Sick society we live in! God forgive us and have mercy on our souls for permitting this to get too far!

abeca, yes. At an outdoor Mass, soon after becoming Archbishop of Milwaukee, he donned a cheesehead briefly at the beginning of the homily. Obviously, it was before the homily really began. He was introducing himself and indicating that he would be a Packers fan since he was moving to Milwaukee.

The “Borgia Plot”: Not sure what that is, but for the Pope to find out that his trusted butler has betrayed him, wouldn’t that serve also as a “signature threat”? Wasn’t there a recent Pope who died suddenly in what many allege to be a “hit”?

What remains to be seen is whether our bishops will adopt stronger measures if the gentler ones fail. If the State is fully convinced of our will to resist, it will likely settle with us before strong measures need to be adopted.

“Borgia” plot against Benedict? Why would you believe that would be impossible? There have been Borgia plots in the Church before, why should we not expect them in the future? The Church survived them, as it survived a Bishop wearing a Cheesehead. Such fanciful notions of the powers of Bishops! “Tell the faithful not to belong” to the democratic party. gimme a break….

Posted Monday, June 18, 2012 4:15 PM By Juergensen
Other than issue documents that mislead Catholics (can you say “Faithful Citizenship”?) and front for the Democrat Party, what does the USCCB do?

Posted Monday, June 18, 2012 5:02 PM By JLS
k, it’s great to read that Cdl Dolan’s cheesehead event at Mass was done with full dignity. Now I’m tempted to get me a cheesehead mask and try wearing it in a dignified manner.

Brian “gimme a break” S., tell the aborted souls how much you love the democrat party.

k wow I don’t know how to express his behavior, but I am greatly disappointed. We should be Jesus fans first!

JLS, which recent pope died suddenly in what many allege to be a “hit?”

Come Holy Spirit. Should American Catholic business owners drop their health plans in a couple of months, if the mandate is enforced?

Posted Tuesday, June 19, 2012 12:11 AM By Clinton
Hard to see any bishop pre-Vatican II would be so undignified as to don a cheesehead or any such ridiculous thing during Mass. But as we have seen, anything goes in the Novus Ordo Mass. Prayers for the return of the TLM as the ordinary form of the Mass. +JMJ+

John Paul I.

Posted Tuesday, June 19, 2012 7:32 AM By MacDonald
Maryanne, I believe our gun-toting bud JLS is speaking of Pope John Paul I, who died after just one month on the Throne of Saint Peter. If you Google his name (I’m speaking of the Holy Father, not of JLS), you will probably find theories about what (or who) killed him after such a short time as Supreme Pontiff. I couldn’t believe my ears back in 1978 when I learned he had died!

Posted Tuesday, June 19, 2012 9:12 AM By k
I agree with those who find the cheesehead incident cringeworthy.

Posted Tuesday, June 19, 2012 4:10 PM By Maryanne Leonard
Thanks, McDonald. I do now remember hearing some sort of speculation about that, but I dismissed it at the time as seeming most unlikely and had since forgotten it. It was an astonishing event, however, and it is easy to understand why some would wonder.

One of the predominate theories about Pope John Paul I’s untimely death is that he was killed because he fully intended to read the uncensored 3rd. Secret for the World and the Masons and Communist could not allow that. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

Brian, belonging to the Democratic Party is great if one does not mind being put into a vat of acid or having one’s limbs torn off while still alive as is done, for the most part, in an abortion.

Anne T., If Obama is re-elected by the “Catholic” vote, Brian and his kind will soon find out what the Mexican people found out too late. If they still then insist on being Catholic, they will also find out how much the Demoncrats really appreciated their betrayal of their professed Faith! Long Live Christ the King! Viva Cristo Rey! God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

By the way, I should have worded my last post differently. It was not a threat. I was just stating the facts as to what most Democrats (and some Republicans) are encouraging by backing abortion. I should have written:”It is great being a Democrat if one does not mind putting unborn child in etc,, etc., etc. Nevertheless, who knows what God himself will do to those of us who encourage such things and do nothing about them after we die.
