Cardinal Raymond Burke issued a call [yesterday] morning for the Catholic faithful to “work for the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”
Cardinal Burke, who is one of the four Cardinals who have asked Pope Francis for a clarification of Amoris Laetitia, made his appeal at the Rome Life Forum, in the month of the centenary of Our Lady of Fatima’s first apparition to the three shepherd children.
In a comprehensive address on “The Secret of Fatima and a New Evangelization,” Cardinal Burke, in the presence of fellow dubia Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, outspoken Kazakhstan Bishop Athanasius Schneider and over 100 life and family leaders from 20 nations, said that the triumph of the Immaculate Heart would mean much more than the ending of world wars, and the physical calamities that Our Lady of Fatima predicted.
“As horrible as are the physical chastisements associated with man’s disobedient rebellion before God, infinitely more horrible are the spiritual chastisements for they have to do with the fruit of grievous sin: eternal death,” he said.
Turning to the current situation in the Church in light of Our Lady of Fatima’s revelations, Burke said:
“The teaching of the Faith in its integrity and with courage is the heart of the office of the Church’s pastors: the Roman Pontiff, the Bishops in communion with the See of Peter, and their principal co-workers, the priests. For that reason, the Third Secret is directed, with particular force, to those who exercise the pastoral office in the Church. Their failure to teach the faith, in fidelity to the Church’s constant teaching and practice, whether through a superficial, confused or even worldly approach, and their silence endangers mortally, in the deepest spiritual sense, the very souls for whom they have been consecrated to care spiritually. The poisonous fruits of the failure of the Church’s pastors is seen in a manner of worship, of teaching and of moral discipline which is not in accord with Divine Law.
“Certainly, Pope Saint John Paul II consecrated the world, including Russia, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on March 25, 1984,” said Cardinal Burke. “But, today, once again, we hear the call of Our Lady of Fatima to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart, in accord with her explicit instruction.”
The want for the ‘explicit’ mention of Russia in the consecration as requested by Our Lady was desired by Pope John Paul II, but not undertaken due to pressure from counselors. This fact was confirmed most recently by the official representative of Pope Francis at the Fatima anniversary celebration last week in Karaganda, Kazakhstan.
For those who may still object to calling for the consecration of Russia, Cardinal Burke recalled the words of Pope St. John Paul II who in 1982 during his consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart noted: “Mary’s appeal is not for just once. Her appeal must be taken up by generation after generation, in accordance with the ever new ‘signs of the times’. It must be unceasingly returned to. It must ever be taken up anew.”
Instructing the faithful, Cardinal Burke taught that Our Lady of Fatima “provides for us the means to go faithfully to her Divine Son and to seek from Him the wisdom and strength to bring His saving grace to a profoundly troubled world.”
Cardinal Burke outlined six means Our Lady gave at Fatima for the faithful take part in the restoration of peace in the world and in the Church:
- to pray the Rosary each day
- to wear the Brown Scapular;
- to make sacrifices for the sake of saving sinners;
- to make reparation for offenses to her Immaculate Heart by means of the First Saturday devotion; and
- to convert our own lives ever more to Christ.
- Lastly, she asks the Roman Pontiff, in union with all the Bishops of the world, to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart.
“By these means, she promises that her Immaculate Heart will triumph, bringing souls to Christ, her Son,” Cardinal Burke added. “Turning to Christ, they will make reparation for their sins. Christ, through the intercession of His Virgin Mother, will save them from Hell and bring peace to the whole world.”

And you can ‘bet the farm’ on what the AWESOME Cardinal Burke states! He is a TRUE SHEPHERD of Jesus’ Church!!!
I thought God called the shots, not Mary. If the world has already been consecrated to Mary, that includes Russia, so she got what she wanted plus more for good measure; you’d think she’d be pleased that JPII gave her more than she asked for. I think for Mary to say that Russia has to be named explicitly is nitpicky. It’s like a woman asking for carnations, and you give her carnations and roses and many other varieties of flowers in a beautiful bouquet but she gets upset because you didn’t say, “Look, there are carnations in the bouquet, just like you asked for.”
Herman, you are dabbling with things that I certainly wouldn’t. Cardinal Burke made this statement because Francis felt the need to talk about himself while at Fatima.
A truly uninformed response.
Oh, really?
Sister Lúcia Santos declared in writing during the 1980s that the consecration performed by Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square on March 25, 1984, had been properly accomplished and was accepted in Heaven.
So was Sister Lucia uninformed too?
Either one of two things: (1) she was incorrect; or (2) the report was false. It was not up to Sr. Lucia to ratify the consecration. She was never asked to do that. She was asked to be messenger of Our Lady’s requests. It’s simple that the consecration of Russia was not specifically done, it was fudged. Why was it fudged?
I thought Sr. Lucy only said that the consecration of the world was accepted. That doesn’t mean that the consecration of Russia, in specific, was done. Simple obedience is the key here. Do what was asked. Kind of like a homework assignment, Herman. One can do all manner of extra credit, but just turning in the completed “assignment” is what’s going to fill the bill.
That’s an excellent point, that there’s a profound difference between acceptance of any consecration versus it fulfilling the request for the consecration of Russia. However, these late era reports of alleged statements by Sr. Lucia should never be trusted when one considers all the duplicity that has swirled around the entire matter, including the so-called disclosure of the Third Secret in 2000. These alleged statements all sound pre-packaged to fit a pre-ordained narrative, all constructed in an environment in which the consecration of Russia has been resisted, over and over, and then desperately defended as sufficient.
Cardinal Burke is the Pat Robertson of Catholicism!
It’s beginning to seem like it
LOVE you, Cardinal Burke! Wish Cardinal Burke could be our Pope!
I think Cardinal Burke is mistaken. When praying for the Holy Father’s intentions you don’t have to have the specific intention for the month explicitly in mind; a general prayer for the Holy Father’s intentions that month, whatever they are, suffices. Same with consecrating Russia to Mary’s immaculate heart. Pope John Paul II’s general consecration of the entire world sufficed.
Well, if Cardinal Burke wants to get literal about things, the country “Russia” that existed in 1917 no longer exists. It was replaced by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1922, which was replaced by a new nation also called “Russia” in 1991. With that in mind, Mary’s request is impossible to fulfill because the Russia she wanted consecrated to her immaculate heart ceased to exist in 1922. Pope JPII’s consecration didn’t fulfill the request because Russia didn’t exist in the world at that time. If someone asked you to give something to President Lincoln but you delayed until after he was killed, you waited too long. The Church waited too long.
Our Lady appeared to Sister Lucy at Tuy, Spain, on June 13, 1929, to say that: “The moment has come when God asks the Holy Father to make, in union with all the bishops of the world, the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means.” ‘Russia” obviously refers to a geographic territory regardless of the meaningless shuffling of secular /totalitarian governments which has been taking place since 1917, including the reorganized Soviet Union facilitated by the Perestroika deception of 1991.
No, Herman, Our Blessed Mother is not picky, just precise. The Church has always been direct and precise in Her rituals, prayers and devotions. A scientist, a doctor, and an architect MUST be precise and exact when measuring and performing certain tasks. The same has always been true concerning the Catholic Church. God told Moses to strike the rock ONCE for water; Moses struck it TWICE, and was punished by God. By not consecrating Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Church has been punished. France did not consecrate herself to the Sacred Heart, and look what happened to her. Like Union Pacific, Our Lady is always specific!
Our Lady said that they would do the Consecration but that it would be late, thank god for Cardinal Burke for bringing this to the forefront and showing that John Paul 2 didn’t due it as Our Lady requested due to political forces in the Vatican as Cardinal Cordes recently stated.
Even Mother Angelica of EWTN said that the Consecration was not done, and that what was revealed to the world by representatives of Pope John Paul II, was not the Third Secret. Since Pope John XXIII there has been a cover up and a black out of all things that are true concerning Fatima, the consecration, and the third secret.
WOW! All these conspiracies, cover-ups and back room deals!! Better put Jim Comey on the case.
Why? At what point do stupid Catholics begin clean up their own act? Comey’s just another self-aggrandizing clown, of the same ilk who have botched Fatima.
That’s right, Roberto! Comey for cover-up. Want an “investigation” where all will be discovered and summarily lost, round filed, and explained away via thesaurus? Call Comey!
No thinking legislator- that is one who wants to remain alive – would prosecute these cases wherein culpable gross negligence is transformed into grievous oversight that one cannot prosecute in even the most seasoned professional. Those aren’t really the same things – wink, wink. And professional in today’s parlance means never having to say mea culpa. Gotcha ;^)
Sr. Lucy asked the Blessed Mother when she appeared to Zlucy if she accepted the Consecration done by St. John Paul II. The Blessed Mother said, Yes, I accept the Consecration because John Paul II intended to perform the Consecration per my request. Her has done it to the best of the Holy Father’s ability.” Cardinal Burke is not denying that reality. He is however calling upon a renewed interest in this generation to please Our Lady and renew the Consecration. That is done with the personal Consecration made thru the teaching of St. Louis de Montfort – there seems to be the same type of spirit in Cardinal Burke’s request now. It would be a great blessing for the Church and world. Thank you Cardinal Burke!
You’re apparently a little too ‘faithful and true’ to the propaganda machine. This conversation you’re quoting, doesn’t it ring as just a little too convenient? Cardinal Burke is “not denying that reality”? He most certainly is. He said nothing about renewing anything. As Fulton Sheen said, it’s up to the laity to save the Church. It’s time delusional Catholics wake up from their daydreams and do exactly that.
Hopefully the words of His Eminence Cardinal Burke will vindicate Father Gruner and the Fatima Center. From the very beginning they have been saying that the consecration has not been accomplished and that the third secret has not been revealed. They have never wavered from this, and I believe the truth will soon be accepted by most Catholics.
Kudos, Father. I have had the constant thought that Father Gruner is still praying fervently for the proper Consecration, and that the words of Cardinal Burke here are connected to those prayers. Poor Father Gruner, dismissed for so many years as a kook by all the self-important Neo-Catholics. They will get their comeuppance.
What does “Russia” mean? It is not the same Russia as it was when the visions of Fatima were given. It certainly doesn’t mean the USSR, during which Fatima became famous. Could “Russia” mean the Russian Orthodox Church? – Is Fatima a plea for unity between the East and the West? Is it in fact, a call for the Church to be a truly catholic church united in Faith? And if it is, then P St. JPII’s consecration of the entire world to Fatima might be more faithful to the vision than. I have no idea, or even an opinion on the matter, but I doubt any of us do know for sure what that vision actually means.
When Fatima occurred, the USSR did not exist. It was still Russia. When Our Lady said Russia will be converted, it meant that the Russian Orthodox Church will return to the Catholic Church. This is what the nuns and the priests told us when we were in grammar school.
I do not know what to think about all of this; I am still learning; nevertheless, for those of you who are interested in the early use of the Oriens (facing East) in England, I recommend this link: http: http://www.aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-anglo-saxon-o-antiphons-o-html. If that did not come though the article can be found under “The Anglo-Saxon O Antiphons: O Oriens, O Earendel” on the “A Clerk of Oxford” website. It relates how St. Bede used the Oriens and why. It also tells where Tolkein got some of his ideas for “The Lord of the Rings”. One can read a lot of Old English on there, too, before it was Latinized.
Brilliant response Herman!
Pray to the Holy Ghost that His Grace Cardinal Burke will be our next Roman Pontiff, he alone will restore the Traditional Latin Mass to all of our altars and restore Holy Mother Church to Her rightful place!!
