The following comes from a June 19 opinion piece in the Orange County Register
In a state ruled by a former Jesuit, perhaps we should not be shocked to find ourselves in the grip of an incipient state religion. Of course, this religion is not actually Christianity, or even anything close to the dogma of Catholicism, but something that increasingly resembles the former Soviet Union, or present-day Iran and Saudi Arabia, than the supposed world center of free, untrammeled expression.
Two pieces of legislation introduced in the Legislature last session, but not yet enacted, show the power of the new religion. One is Senate Bill 1146, which seeks to limit the historically broad exemptions the state and federal governments have provided religious schools to, well, be religious.
Under the rubric of official “tolerance,” the bill would only allow religiously focused schools to deviate from the secular orthodoxy required at nonreligious schools, including support for transgender bathrooms or limitations on expressions of faith by students and even Christian university presidents, in a much narrower range of educational activity than ever before. Many schools believe the bill would needlessly risk their mission and funding to “solve” gender and social equity problems on their campuses that currently don’t exist.
The second piece of legislation, thankfully temporarily tabled, Senate Bill 1161, the Orwellian-named “California Climate Science Truth and Accountability Act of 2016,” would have dramatically extended the period of time that state officials could prosecute anyone who dared challenge the climate orthodoxy, including statements made decades ago. It would have sought “redress for unfair competition practices committed by entities that have deceived, confused or misled the public on the risks of climate change or financially supported activities that have deceived, confused or misled the public on those risks.”
Although advocates tended to focus on the hated energy companies, the law could conceivably also extend to skeptics who may either reject the prevailing notions of man-made climate change, or might believe that policies concocted to “arrest” the phenomena may be themselves less than cost-effective or even not effective at all. So, fellow Californians, sign onto Gov. Torquemada’s program or face possible prosecution and the fires of hell….
Add to the list Doctor Assisted Suicide which took effect this week. This Jesuit advanced the Culture of Death. Another Jesuit recently destroyed marriage in favor of Faithful Cohabitation. Pedro Arrupe did leave his Black mark in the Church. Happy Vatican II, everyone!
The religion of California is the Cult of Statism, ministered by the Democrat Party.
From thewandererpress.com interview with pro-life, Fr. Frank Pavone. Q. What can be done to enlighten voters about the shocking full consequences of the Democrat Party’s chosen stand as the Party of Death? Why do we still have people who claim having a Catholic affiliation to be ‘unquestioning’ Democrats? Media numbed consciences? A. Part of the problem is that we have Church leaders voting for the Democratic candidates & so deeply tied into alliances (funding) with some of their leaders that they don’t want to offend their friends by teaching with the clarity that will help the Catholics in the pews, or those leaders themselves, to think clearly about the contradiction between embracing Catholicism & embracing the Culture of Death…
One paragraph of vague generality. A second paragraph with an unclear quotation: from the bill or from some other commentator?
I think the article should provide some specifics of what the bill provides and a directly related ‘evil effect’ of that specific provision.
Joel Kotkin (the author) is quite specific. Go read it.
evo morales’s hammer-and-sickle cross gift to pope francis would be the perfect emblem for california’s twisted path from freedom to totalitarianism.
Jerry Brown was not an ordained Jesuit. He was in the Jesuit seminary for approximately 3 years. It drives me to distraction when it is stated he was a
Jesuit. HE WAS NOT!
Ordination is not the criteria. Novitiates are Jesuits on day one. Jerry Brown was a Jesuit. https://americamagazine.org/content/all-things/jesuit-formation-and-lingo
CALL TO ACTION: California Senate Bill 1146 Severely Restricts Religious Freedom – Stop it NOW!
California Senate Bill 1146 (Equity in Higher Education Act) is a threatening and overreaching bill, which would eliminate religious liberty in California faith-based higher education. It has already passed the Appropriations Committee and the California Senate. It could be in the Assembly by June 30 for a full vote.
Introduced by Sen. Ricardo Lara (D), SB 1146 would narrow the religious exemption essentially to seminaries. *********This bill limits the integration of faith and learning throughout the educational experience. The bill eliminates the religious exemption that allows Catholic and Christian colleges and universities to operate in…

Well, let’s see — and this is not legal advice — this is why there is a First Amendment. However, one needs a faithful litigant to take the fight forward. Who would this be?
Actually, the article does not go far enough. The complicity of moron bishops in CA, no, unfaithful bishops in CA, gives cover to the vile liars in Sacramento. So much of the craziness, and evil, that goes on there would not happen if the CA bishops stood up and simply preached the Gospel. But, they don’t, to the great harm of all.
Again, thanks to radical liberal policitians, our Catholic faith is under assault. The radicalism is so deep rooted, it has infected every level of society, especially in the Catholic Church. We need our bishops and priests to lead the fight against the minions of satan.
Today @ thewandererpress.com with pro-life Fr Frank Pavone.Q. What can be done to enlighten voters about the shocking full consequences of the Democrat Party’s chosen stand, the Party of Death? Why do we still have people who claim a Catholic affiliation to be unquestioning Democrats? Media numbed consciences? A. Part of the problem is that we have Church LEADERS voting for Democratic candidates & so deeply tied into alliances (funding) with some of their leaders that they don’t want to offend their friends by teaching with the clarity that will help the Catholics in the pews, or those leaders, to think clearly about the contradiction between embracing Catholicism & embracing the Culture of Death.
Clinton R, Like the chicken or the egg question….what comes first? Sounds like, per good Fr. Pavone’s comment & the article, the problem IS some of the bishops/priest of the C. Church. That’s how Catholics elect the, “radical liberal politicians” you rightly mentioned are assaulting the Church.
Pew, you identify the problem, but I’m not sure of the solution, if there is an effective one. First, the Bishops have no moral authority left, even among Catholics, as a result of their actions around clergy abuse. Second, the cultural change of the last ten or twenty years has been so large and so swift that the Church wasn’t effective in shaping the conversation. Third, young people are more educated than in the past. The “liberal” bent of their teachers has convinced them that the teachings of the Church are to be considered “hate.” Young people, in general, believe that abortion is a woman’s decision and not wrong. Same sex marriage is ok. Divorce is the norm for them. And, they have taught their parents well.
Gravey is right on target. Unfortunately, as California goes, so too does the rest of the United States. The liberals in the government and in the Church are destroying the two institutions that mean so much to many of us. But, just as in the Old Testament God punished the Jewish people for being unfaithful, so too is He punishing us by giving us leaders whom we deserve, both politically and ecclesiastical.
Ralph – Say what you want but the fact remains, Jerry Brown was NOT an
ORDAINED Jesuit. He may have some training but he is NOT a Jesuit.
Shout it from the roof tops if you like….but you cannot change the facts.
Ralph is correct, amy. It is you who cannot change the facts nor the definitions. Ordination is not a criterion for being considered a Jesuit. Brown is a former Jesuit because he was in the Jesuit novitiate. You can distinguish between Jesuit novices and Jesuit priests, but all are Jesuits. Call Brown a former Jesuit novice, if you prefer to be that specific, but that still makes him a former Jesuit.
I have no desire to change facts. The Jesuits themselves would tell you that Jerry Brown was a Jesuit. Your beef is with them, not with me. But isn’t the real point that Jerry Brown’s politics reflect a Jesuit bent? Or you don’t agree with that either? Who are you trying to protect – Brown or the Jesuits? To my mind, there’s enough guilt by association to go around.
well, wait a minute. A person doesn’t have to be ordained to be a Jesuit. The order isn’t composed of priests alone. He’s not a Jesuit today, but he once was. Please get to know the facts before you proclaim you have them.
Amy, that bothers me, too! But I think people mostly enjoy calling Brown an “ex-Jesuit,” because he certainly is NOT holy! Actually– joining a religious order is not exactly the same, as going to a diocesan seminary. When you join a religious order, you have TWO things to study for– the religious order, plus to be a priest or a brother. And Jerry Brown was a real-life Jesuit novice! His next step would have been to take temporary vows, and then, lifetime vows. It is a long process, of many years! Plus, he was studying to be a priest. What a “train-wreck,” his life turned into– especially with his “liberal-left,” immoral politics, as Governor!
And people who claim to be Catholic voted for Jerry Brown. Including some who post on this website!
You are ‘RIGHT ON’ Amy!!!!!!!!
Sheesh: California is long gone. The article is right. It’s more like the Soviet Union than America.
Joe, you obviously were not around when the USSR was in full bloom!
Jesuit or not a Jesuit? Is that the point? Many of us would agree by HIS actions, Jerry Brown is a TURNCOAT ‘Catholic’ or CINO. Just look at what unholy anti-Catholic, & anti-Christian work he advances in California! (Space is limited & we all know the headlines.) Sadly it seems, that JB has attacked God’s natural law, the culture of life & religious freedoms more than any current elected official next to our POTUS. May God have mercy on his immortal soul for all the evil inflicted on California by his cooperation with ‘death’ legislation. Next, Orwellian climate change legislation? Can’t help but pity the Catholic souls that voted for him.
On the other hand, some cynically might say Jesuit v. CINO is a distinction without a difference. But it’s always important to keep pointing out what modern Jesuit education does to people – specifically it corrodes intellects and destroys souls. Parents, if you’ve got even a semblance of clue, keep your children out of Jesuit schools. Jerry Brown: Exhibit A.
Good Point!
The worst part of this article is the picture of Brown receiving Communion from the Bishop. Scandalous? You decide.
Il remember the picture of Bishop Barber, S.J. at his installation leaving
the altar and going to Jerry Brown’s pew to give him Holy Communion. I was
shocked to say the least. Perhaps, Bishop Barber gave Jerry Brown absolution
right before mass. Not for us to judge, I know. But then Jerry Brown immediately went back to the Capitol and continued all his legislation that slaughters the unborn. And this is the example of 2 Jesuits…..Jerry Brown and
Bishop Barber. God have mercy of them. I wonder if Jesuit seminarians are instructed that ABORTION is an intrinsic evil?
Veronica, I wasn’t going to write this— but I saw this, too, and hoped there was some mistake– as I like to think that Bishop Barber is a good bishop! But heck, you said it, and I do not know the truth of what happened (did Brown go to Confession? Or what?) and it is a HEARTBREAK!! Bishop Barber is also a Jesuit, and has served as a military chaplain — and what really happened, I will never know!! I do not understand– well, the apparent HYPOCRISY– of our Church leaders! And what do they REALLY do, all the California bishops and prelates– BESIDES BETRAY CHRIST— even in Sacramento??
Catholic Colleges: ‘Gender Identity’ in Title IX Threatens Religious Freedom
https://cardinalnewmansociety.org/catholic-colleges-gender-identity-title-ix-threatens-religious-freedom/
In letters to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) the presidents of five Catholic colleges cited their institutions’ faithfulness to Church teaching in explaining how the expansion of Title IX to include “gender identity” posed a significant threat to the religious mission of the colleges.
College requests for religious exemptions from Title IX were first published by the Obama administration last April following demands from radical activist groups seeking to “shame” faith-based colleges for defending their religious freedom…
I think Gov. Jerry Brown and his wife sometimes attend Mass, and take Holy Communion– from the hands of our California priests and bishops! True, or false?? Of course, he and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and all the other wayward, immoral “Catholic” politicians, never receive correct Church discipline, nor even excommunication! It is a horrible thing, that Californians now must all pay for the HORRIFIC SIN– of legalized, doctor-assisted suicide!!
I am afraid the truth was said, above– when I made a reply to the post of Veronica! I am afraid Gov. Brown may have received a great many SACRILEGIOUS Communions, at the hands of our California priests and prelates! Our Church has BETRAYED CHRIST!! And look at the hideous truth of California, turning its back on Christianity, and all moral decency– and eagerly embracing the Devil and all his sin and evil!! SHAME on the California Catholic Bishops’ Conference!! Just what do they even exist for, anyway?? (I wasn’t going to say that– but I did! So sad! What a bad Church!!)
Perhaps the Holy Father and all our prelates need to realize– that they cannot just go on and on, with doing wrong things, at times! Children DO SEE THEIR BOO-BOOS– and just what can we say to them?? VERY, VERY PAINFUL!! And many Catholic college kids leave the Church, for immoral “liberal left” beliefs and lifestyles— or else simply settle for an immoral life, while attending Mass, anyway. They should be the future of the Church– and so, what can the future of our Church possibly be— given such a poor situation??
