California Assembly members overwhelmingly voted today for an amendment to the state constitution redefining marriage to include same-sex couples. The vote included 58 Democrats and 8 Republicans voting yes, with the remaining members not voting. Now the question will go to the State Senate, with the final decision to be made by the voters in 2024.
Sen. Scott Wiener and Assemblymember Evan Low introduced Assembly Constitutional Amendment 5 (ACA 5) to repeal Proposition 8, which amended the California Constitution by adding the following words: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California….”
Those Assembly Republicans voting for ACA 5 even though the CA Republican Platform says marriage should be defined as one man and one woman are: Juan Alanis (R-Modesto), Phillip Chen (R-Brea), Laurie Davies (R-Oceanside), Josh Hoover (R-Folsom), Bill Essayli (R-Riverside), Devon Mathis (R-Visalia), Marie Waldron (R-Escondido) and Greg Wallis (R-Rancho Mirage) who also co-sponsored ACA 5.
Several Republicans who voted for the bill touted a letter Republicans encouraged Asm. Low to write stating that ACA 5 was intended to limit marriage to “two unmarried persons 18 years of age or older” and it acknowledged the constitutional right of clergy to chose those marriages they which to solemnize. They hoped this would allay fears regarding ACA 5’s affect on the religious liberty of those who believe in the Biblical definition of one man, one woman marriage. While judges do look at legislative intent, the text of a bill has more long-term authority on the bill’s interpretation….
Once again, California is on the wrong side history.
When CA crumbles into the Pacific Ocean, who will be left to tell the reasons why?
Laws must be based on reality. If you pass a “law” or an “amendment” that says the ocean is yellow or the sun rises in the west or the moon is made of baklava…it doesn’t mean these are reality. The objective reality of sex and the immutable complementary of male and female renders all such narcissistic “legislative acts” of make-believe null, void, and frankly not worth the brain cells of sentient human beings.
Bad news for Christian bakers, caterers, photographers, and churches if they are found to run afoul of the Democrats’ new society. Their revenge against believers will taste ever so sweet. Who can withstand the LGBTQ+ juggernaut?
God can withstand the gay
God can withstand the gay+ juggernaut!
And if you refuse to accept this moral abomination, you will be punished to the fullest extent of whatever laws they can hang you with.
Just a question: if the voters pass this amendment, how will this affect church policies for employment in schools particularly?
Not one Repiblican had the courage to vote no? Not one? It’s over for California and for conservatives and for Catholics in the state. Over. Done. If you don’t leave now, don’t complain about what happens later.
Evan Lower.
Marriage is like a salad tossed by God and seasoned by the Church. It is a holy union of lettuce and tomato, dressing and croutons, cheese and nuts. No one can separate what God has joined together, not even a fork or a knife. Marriage is a sacrament of love, a salad of grace, a feast of joy. What marriage was is what it is. We marry because we are made to marry. And marry we shall, which is why almost all of us are married, or have been married, or will be married.
Kamala — lol. Thanks for your jollyisms and for the yellow school buses, of which there are many.
A salad is a poor analogy-except for the nuts part.
California is done like dinner.
The purpose pf marriage is procreation and education of children for God. Marriage is consummated by an act of procreation. Same sex couples cannot procreate. Their fake marriage can never be valid.
That is not the teaching of the Church. You got part of it.
If your church teaches that gay marriage is valid, you need to find another church.
You did not get the purpose of marriage (Holy Matrimony) correct.
