As of today, October 22, California Catholic Daily has made it possible to comment on stories via Facebook. (Readers will still be able to comment in the conventional way.)
To help Cal Catholic reach the widest (and younger) audience, we encourage any readers who can to use Facebook to make comments. When comments come through Facebook, the comments go out to your Facebook page and to others associated with your page.
Excellent change! Cal Catholic will gain far greater exposure now that it is on FB. A huge improvement to your apostolate! My advice down the road would be to go fully FB as it will reduce your workload and it will cause people to take a little more care in their comments as their identities will be known.
As it is right now, not much more than about a dozen regularly post here with most being rather “extreme” to say the least. You’ll no doubt have to endure ignorant carping from the tinfoil-hatters who in no way understand FB but have been conditioned to negatively react to it nonetheless.
Thanks for the improvement!
Cal Catholic,
When Rodda praises you, you are in deep spiritual trouble.
Facebook is among the most pro-abortion, pro-sodomite organizations around, and I consider it an honor to be attacked by Ms. Rodda, praise God and His Mother for that Blessing!
May God have mercy on an amoral America!
Viva Cristo Rey!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Sad that you ignore the words of Pope Francis.
Sad that you ignore the fact that the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, many arch(bishops), EWTN, Catholic Answers and thousands of Catholic parishes across have official Facebook pages/groups.
I will not use Facebook – please do not make it the exclusive means to comment as many others have.
Are you the Robert Lockwood of OSV? I am a subscriber and I truly enjoy your articles.
I am not on facebook, never have been, never will be. I don’t use it and don’t care about it.
Remember Campers – Facebunk means Facebunk Censors and a whole coven of ready made radical homosex Harpies just waiting to swoop and dump their ‘frothy mix” of ‘love’.
It also means being Banned (for various lengths of time) is the Facebunk Harpies report you for writing (or quoting) Un-Good things, like the Teachings of the Magisterium they don’t approve of.
At least here – the Gaystapo is not in charge, whereas out there in the land of Abomination…
I agree with Michael, Sawyer and Robert.
I too will not use nor endorse facebook.
I agree with all of you regarding facebook and i also do not have nor ever will have an account with them – I have been reading CCD for over a year now and have learn a lot of good things and bad things regarding our Church from several different viewpoints. However, as the majority of comments will now be on facebook, this will will be my goodby and thank you to the CCD & Staff .
Amen…
Ignorance begets bigotry. That’s certainly the case with the anti-Facebook attacks posted here. The very same individuals no doubt attacked the Internet itself and cellular telephones in years past. Their ignorant and bigoted forerunners similarly condemned wired telephones, telegraph, television and radio all because they do not know. Rather than study and think, they react. It harms the Church.
Before spewing their bigoted (and programmed) attacks of Facebook they should take the time to educate themselves. Pope Francis himself (and many bishops) uses Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and other forms of social media.
Here is what Pope Francis had to say about the use of social media within the Catholic Church:
“(2013-09-21 Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis on Saturday addressed the participants in the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.
Pope Francis said the goal of the Church for its communications efforts is “to understand how to enter into dialogue with the men and women of today in order to appreciate their desires, their doubts and their hopes.”
The Holy Father said we must examine if the communications of the Church are helping others to meet Christ.
“The challenge is to rediscover, through the means of social communication as well as by personal contact, the beauty that is at the heart of our existence and our journey, the beauty of faith and of the encounter with Christ,” he said.”
The entire Vatican Radio article can easily be found using any search engine. It’s well worth reading for those that want to know the truth and cease being bigoted reactionaries.
Lord have mercy….now this fellow calls people bigots for not liking Facebook. I like my cell phone, I like my computer and I shop on line, and I visit Catholic websites, and I read more about the saints on the web…but I still won’t give in to face book. Perhaps mine is a personal reason, facebook has been used to slander the good name of good families and children. Facebook has destroyed the reputation of a young lady who was suppose to be a fine young lady, it exposed her to new ideas that drove her away from her faith…..etc etc…facebook has hurt good people. Yes all that and for that, I prefer to not have a face book. People say you can control who you have or who reads but you can’t control what they have in it, and sometimes you can get someone whom you trusted turn real ugly…..gossip spreads faster through facebook. Yes it has destroyed good people, good families and some have even lost their children too.
So while I know many are now on facebook including businesses, that is fine, they can do what they please…for there are good people too on face book, fine, no problem but respect ME, if I don’t care for face book, just like I didn’t care for myspace and others as well. Just not my cup of tea and yes I am young mum and cool too, (but am getting older though) I love surfing (even though I don’t surf anymore at all) and I love my faith but facebook, nah I can do without. But I will never put down anyone who likes it nor disrespect anyone who feels the same as I do about it…BUT as always RODDA throws those negative blows. I won’t stoop his level or hers, whatever he is.
Follow Pope Francis and his exhortation to use social media resources like Facebook to “to understand how to enter into dialogue with the men and women of today in order to appreciate their desires, their doubts and their hopes.” Follow the Pope’s lead rather than attack Facebook simply because you do not understand it and because your ego tells you to.
There are MANY very HIGH QUALITY Catholic pages and groups on Facebook. They ably serve the faith in part because their information is so widely disseminated via Facebook.
Oh, great, all the sodomites on Facebook will end up here.
All of them?
Sounds very crowded…
It’s pretty funny that one of the first comments AGAINST Facebook comes from a Facebook user named Patrick Lundgren, way up high. Maybe he was making a joke? (Especially since he says he will never use Facebook!!!)
Not that commenting is necessary for me, but I shut down my Facebook account because of the perfidy of the social networking giant. The idea with commentary is that you want a.) comment accountability, b.) from representative readership, and c.) with little moderation. On the one hand, you get the accountability (so you can avoid anonymous posts like this one), but then on the other, a lot of good people are bailing on Facebook so your commentary will be restricted, and comment moderation, I presume, is done away with. Can you moderate comments, or does all manner of profanity seep through? Does Facebook have a role in moderation (including punishing orthodox commenters for orthodoxy)? If so, I think CC may be regretting this decision sooner than later.
Sorry to say but you are right that CCD will regret this decision and I think sooner than later. I hate to say this but I see this web page being canceled and comments only being accepted on FB. However, MIRACLES do happen .
LOL!! The Holy See has an official FB page. So does Pope Francis himself. So does EWTN and just about every arch(bishop) and many, many parishes.
The simply understand social media and know the amount of good that it can do. They are not reacting in a programmed way to something they do not understand.
Maybe that’s why there are so many problems within the Church as these so called leaders spend too much time on their computers instead of doing their jobs of saving souls. Sorry R.B. but your way off base on this one.
LOL!! You’re kidding, right?
I don’t know if the ludicrous anti-Facebook comments on this thread are indicative of of all “traditionalist” (sic) Catholics or not? If they are, it’s a strongly indicator to me why this tiny faction will never influence the Church to any real degree until it makes the effort to longer longer be ignorant.
R.B. Rodda, the Holy See has a strong defense mechanism against hacking. It is called the St. Michael or St. Gabriel anti hacking system. Most of us cannot afford that. My first experience with Facebook or another such system was when a relative had it, and all of a sudden all her personal e-mails to others were being sent to me and to everyone in her address book. I told her what I was getting and she said it was because of the system that she was using, either Facebook or a similar one. I have avoided them ever since even though they say they have cleared it up. I do buy online, but I will not bank on line. If they can hack the computers of the United States government at times, surely they can hack mine if they so desire. You can call me a bigot all you want, but as I said before “Once burned, twice shy.” Also, I get enough Spam to choke a horse, and some filthy stuff — one can tell without opening it — and I do not desire any more, and the more ones e-mail address is out there, the more one gets. My friends and I always try to erase past e-mail addresses when a message is sent to us before we send it on, but we still get a lot of spam.
RB Rodda quotes Pope Francis and writes “Pope Francis said the goal of the Church for its communications efforts is “to understand how to enter into dialogue with the men and women of today in order to appreciate their desires, their doubts and their hopes.”
RB Rodda, Is that your goal or your own personal example of entering into dialogue with men and women of today in order to appreciate their desires, their doubts and their hopes? You just quoted Pope Francis’s words and on the very first day you chose to enter into dialogue by calling others ignorant spewing bigots.
“The challenge is to rediscover, through the means of social communication as well as by personal contact, the beauty that is at the heart of our existence and our journey, the beauty of faith and of the encounter with Christ,” he said.” — Pope Francis I.
This thread is scary. No wonder so many people here are miserable and can do nothing about carp about the Church and others. Their collective ignorance has spawned terrible bigotry. Rather than make the effort to understand, they remain ignorant — and bigoted.
It doesn’t take much study to realize that the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, many (arch)bishops, EWTN, Catholic Answers, etc., etc. ALL have Facebook pages. Instead they remain in the dark and attack that which they do not understand.
How terribly sad.
Railing Roda has again gone off the tracksss – with a standard self-righteous Mau Mau screed toward anyone who doesn’t toe the party line of the Abomination.
Facebunk is actually become rather passé – amongst the truly techno trendy…
– If only because so many others started using it (like people’s parents, ‘spying’ on their kids facebunk page to see what the youngsters are up to)…. and many moved on to other nano-thought channels.
Hence – like so many things embraced by the ‘youth of amerika’ – it was already old – once the ‘old folks’ (a somewhat variable term) found it.
Facebunk can be useful for some Mass communication from a point source; but Harpy Attacks can quickly turn the system in to a ‘mosh pit’ (forgive me the 80’s-Ism)…
– Providing the Gaystapo an opportunity for ‘E-Flash /Flush Mobs’– using an on call group of radicals to trash any post or poster targeted by ‘the watchdogs’ of the P.C.
I once commented on a Facebunk story / ‘debate’ showing a Steroid Dyke with a full peachfuzz ‘beard’ pretending to be a ‘New Man’
(To promote ‘tolerance’ for exterminating the old Y-DNA BioManPigOppressor)
I pointed out the severely depraved Pogrom of Separatist / Neo-Exterminationist Misandry (Hatred of Men & Boys, Masculinity and Normal Heterosexuality) – behind her demand All Men (XY DNA) Deny the Immutable Scientific Nature of our Genetic Gender Heritage – Or Else.
Guess which post got removed by trackmasters at Facebunk – and it wasn’t the ‘Bearded Lady’ trainwreck.
As an way to reach those who use it, I think CCD adding FB as an additional communications outlet is a reasonable move. OTOH, I think it would be a mistake for CCD to use FB as its principal or only platform, since FB is owned and controlled by secular/commercial interests which are at best indifferent to religious concerns and the Church, and at worst, hostile. Personally, I don’t trust FB and don’t use their services, but know many people who do, and respect their choice to do so. I hope CCD doesn’t transition to a FB-only format, since I am a daily reader (if an infrequent commentor)… besides, I’d really miss the colorful, broad-minded and ever-charitable comments by regulars like R.B. Rodda.
4M.
Four Marks, it is probably fine for this website to use Facebook for those who want to use it, and I do read the comments on there, but for R.B. Rodda to call people bigots because they will not use it is just nutty. There are many good reasons why people will not use it, and it should be up to them without all the name calling.
Dear Anne T.:
I have read enough of R.B. Rodda’s pointed comments on CCD to know that he/she has a very rigid world view. If you agree w/ him/her, you’re smart and with-it. If you disagree, you are dull, backward, ignorant; e.g., Rodda’s trashing of everyone who doesn’t think the Crystal Cathedral is wonderful, beautiful, and will make a splendid Catholic cathedral church. I don’t know if Rodda and the other truculent name-callers that post here are even Catholic, and I don’t really care. There’s a saying that you can only be truly insulted if you acknowledge the source and accept the insult. I do neither w/ all these CCD trolls, and encourage you to ignore them as well… surely you’ve heard the internet adage, “don’t feed the trolls..” … there’s a good reason for it, it only encourages them.
The issue of this thread was/is CCD’s use of FB. Some commentors have made good points both pro and con. My objective was mainly to ensure the CCD staff realizes there are a good number of CCD readers who don’t/won’t use FB, and who will not follow CCD on a FB-only format. It doesn’t matter to me in the least if CCD expands out onto FB, as long as they continue to have a public site on the Worldwide Web.
Pax tecum- 4M.
Thanks for the advice, Four Marks, I should not have called R.B. Rodda’s post “nutty” as exchanging insult for insult is clearing what Our Lord warned against and exactly what R.B. Rodda wanted. For that I give my apologies.
Correction: “Clearly” not “clearing”.
So your entry on Facebook says “Commenters push back.” You said that about some of your most loyal readers? Too scuzzy for me!
One last point for those novices considering hunkering down in the face-bunker…
You will Not be Alone, at least not for long.
In fact – the system is geared toward expansion like some cyber-ponzi scheme, where recruitment of friends (via hijacking their email lists – with permission of course) is common.
In essence – Facebunk (*like other networks) Opens Up Your Files to outsiders, including marketers and the spam corps (as opposed to POTUS Soetoro’s Corpse Men) – who will ask ‘permission’ for access – in order to grant your request…
Your Profile is not only posted on line – but linked to all your friends and activities, and makes a great intro for ID Thieves and just plain scammers lookin to mess with ya.
Don’t worry though – Zuckerberg has enough $$ already to fuel his world domination schemes, and it is only the likes of Bill Gates & George Soros who can stand in his way – so pick your whinner and join today, before they make you do it tomorrow – cause everybody else is, or else.
I could create a FB account today and use it for nothing other than to access the Vatican, Pope Francis, EWTN, Catholic Answers, CalCatholic and other Catholic sites. I need not add a single “friend”, I need not expose my personal data, nothing of the kind.
Thanks for posting this Michael. There is a reason that I have refrained from opening a facebook account. Now you are telling me that because of CCD’s association with them my e-mail address will most likely end up in facebook’s procession anyway.
I “friended” Pope Francis on FB. He sends out the daily readings and lots of spiritual guidence. I think it helps me be a better Catholic.
Very cool. Some of those reflections are amazing. Sad that the anti-Facebook bigots will never benefit from them.
TAKE OUT THE Whip, make those Catholics conform, if not they are bigots! I wonder who really are the true bigots here? It must be coming from the ones using that word so freely. I recall a homosexual who posts here regularly calling quotes from our early doctors of the church…bigots…giving the tone that our church was filled with bigotry in regards to homosexual teachings. Sad day that was to read that on a Catholic website…..one can’t help but be concerned and judge “who really are the real bigots here?”
Yes enjoy the modern accommodations folks but approach with caution. Skype is great today because you can finally keep in touch with family who does not live near by. Military families are enjoying that too. I used it when my sister was living in New York….excellent tool when you want to see a loved one. Still the phone is also a great tool to use….and I enjoy getting emails but MySpace and Facebook didn’t interest me…so what? Who cares….I don’t need them. My husband’s aunt, God bless her soul, when she was alive, she had Facebook to keep in touch with all her 20 plus grand kids……..well she eventually canceled her Facebook account, she couldn’t stand the chaos she read and the inappropriate stuff that many of the teenagers posted. She felt a great sadness to see a different side of her family, the insults and inappropriate stuff. Even from a dear friend, who works for the church office….she was surprised at the gossip from church members. We live in a big city but one would think it was a small town because word sure gets around pretty fast due to Facebook…..good things and bad things too.. Its unavoidable so it seems…..
Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, is a vocal atheist. I don’t know why you would want to use tools built by such a heathen!
