San Diego Catholic Bishop Robert W. McElroy issued the following statement today after Gov. Gavin Newsom recommended that Imperial County re-institute stay-at-home orders because of the high rate of infection of COVID-19 there:
“We are pausing our plans to re-open our parishes for public Masses in Imperial County starting today given the current health conditions.
“I thank our priests, church personnel and volunteers who had prepared for weeks to welcome our brothers and sisters back to Mass, but the community’s and our parishioners’ safety comes first.
“We will keep our faithful informed about when we plan to resume our public Masses. In the meantime, we encourage them to continue to join us in the live-transmissions of our Masses.
“As people of faith we know that God walks with us every day, especially in these difficult times. We will continue to pray for those who are sick and for the families of those who have died because of this virus, not only in Imperial County but everywhere.”
Whatever Dictator Newsom says and the bishops do it. So very sad.
It might be more helpful to know where and how the spike in cases has occurred. Are we seeing large family/extended family gatherings without regard to safety? Are protesters imprudently protesting? Are beach-goers disregarding protocol? Are illegals bringing infection from across the border? It would behoove the CDC to form a picture of just what is going on. From the picture accompanying the article, it seems propriety is maintained at Mass. How about elsewhere?
Dan, people are going to bars, pong parties, indoor family reunions Churches, and political rallies. In addition to prisons, meat plants, and senior living facilities, these indoor events are where the spread is happenning. Remarkably few if any spread is happenning at outdoor venues like protests, beaches, and parks. By the way, there IS a lot of cross-border spread, but not by “illegals”. Americans who got sick overseas and in Mexico who come back for treatment.
Dan, Good questions. Remember, all the animals on the farm are equal. It’s just that some are more equal.
