His brother Bishops have elected Bishop Robert McElroy from the Diocese of San Diego as the new president of the California Catholic Conference. He succeeds Sacramento Bishop Jaime Soto, who completed two terms as president.
Bishop McElroy, who is currently in Rome representing the United States at the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region, is a native of San Francisco and became an auxiliary bishop of that Archdiocese in July 2010. He was installed as the sixth bishop of San Diego in April 2015. He previously served as vice president of the Conference.
The new vice president is Bishop Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Orange who previously served as the secretary/treasurer of the Conference. Bishop Vann is on the Board of the Pontifical North American College and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, among other service work.

Lord, have mercy! How did this happen? I pray he was elected solely because he was vice-president of the conference and that it’s a formality, not that his brother bishops support all of his views. He is one of the bishops in denial of the fact that homosexual priests were a large part of the tragic problem of the grave scandal we’ve had to endure.
Where he will lead does not look promising
McCarrick Church not only lives on, it gains power – how frightening! As Archbishop Vigano revealed, McElroy was never recommended by anyone in the US tasked with suggesting good, holy priests who would be good candidates for bishop. Then, he mysteriously was named bishop because Ted McCarrick, one of Pope Francis’s closest advisors, intervened.
Perhaps one wishes to specify where they believe Bishop Mcelroy will lead.
Even as President of the Conference, isn’t he still under the Archbishop of LA in the episcopal ‘pecking order’ ??
mike m,
San Diego is a suffragan diocese of L.A. Nevertheless, the Archbishop of Los Angeles has no authority over Bishop McElroy.
From New Way Ministries (June 2015) which supports homosexual activity, including so-called marriage:
After a statement expressing a desire for government to preserve a unique status for heterosexual married couples, Bishop McElroy of San Diego stated:
“The Catholic community of San Diego and Imperial counties will continue to honor and embody the uniqueness of marriage between one man and one woman as a gift from God- -in our teaching, our sacramental life and our witness to the world. We will do so in a manner which profoundly respects at every moment the loving and familial relationships which enrich the lives of so many gay men and women who are our sons and daughters, our sisters and brothers, and ultimately our fellow pilgrims on this earthly journey of life. And commanded by the Gospel of Jesus Christ we will continue to reach out to families of every kind who are encountering poverty, addictions, violence, emotional stress or the threat of deportation, and to attempt to bring them faith and care, service and solidarity.”
How does one “profoundly respect” “relationships” which continue to engage in sex outside of marriage (whether homosexual or heterosexual)?
Our respect needs to be for persons, not their behaviors.
Is “our” teaching true? Or, is it only for “our” community? Catholic teaching is universal and meant for all persons.

On my God, what a poor choice.
We are in dark times.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in this battle…
Obviously, a disaster of major proportions. However, something enlightening has come out of this announcement. We now know for certain that a majority of California’s Bishops and Archbishops are frauds. Would it not be informative to know which Bishops/Archbishops voted for McElroy? I suspect I know which way my Bishop voted which is why my wallet has been closed for quite some time.
When he became Bishop of San Diego he stated that his major goal was to make each parish solar powered.
Yeah…what y’all said!
This is like being president of the county water board. Nobody cares and nothing important comes as a consequence.
Pope Pancho personally reserved a mitre for him before McElroy was elevated to Bishop, while still a priest in San Francisco. McElroy led the resistance to the incorporation of Fr. Joseph Illo, probably the holiest priest in California. Through McElroy, the Homoheresy moves forward in their completion of the spirit of Vatican Council II under 60 years of Jesuitical manipulation. They will not succeed while we have Summorum Pontificum from our Pope Benedict XVI. Every time You or I attend The Traditional Mass it is a black eye for these destroyers of our Church. It is in Southern California that this last defense of the Catholic Faith is being fought at present, we are privileged to still have the Latin Mass,
My fellow posters , great comments so far, Amen !, I join Xavier in his financial judgement , the only way they will respect the laity is through this , it will be interesting to see how he handles the coming onslaught of lawsuits with the lifting of the statutes of limitations on abuse . Look for a major push for fundraising and a chance to insult the laity even more .
Courage. The Holy Spirit will protect the Church and the Faithful. Pray. Receive the Sacraments. Be in a state of grace. Refuse the evil and choose the good. Work out your own salvation. And entrust wayward bishops to Divine Providence.
Bishop McElroy is an excellent Bishop. With guidance from the Holy Spirit and in solidarity with his brother bishops of California, he will lead the conference in a direction which makes the Catholic perspective known throughout our great state.
Pope Francis is a shrewd judge of character and his appointments are strategic to his wishes for the direction of the church in the world and in the US.
This appointment is most appropriate.
Way to go CCB!
Pope Pancho? What a disgusting comment. But one comes to expect that on this site.
