Bishop Barron: “So many of your colleagues were leaving. What made you stay?”[/caption]
Fr. Joseph Fessio, SJ, was formed by some of the greatest figures of twentieth-century Catholicism, including Henri de Lubac, Joseph Ratzinger, and Hans Urs von Balthasar. We discuss his life story, his education, his experience in Europe, the founding of Ignatius Press, and more.

No serious Catholic becomes a Jesuit anymore. Why would you join the order that “gay”ve us Jimmy Martin?
I tend to agree. When Fr. James Martin is the poster child for your society, whether intended or not (he’s the best-known Jesuit in the world other than the pope right now), you have quite an image problem among normal people and among Catholics who take Catholic faith seriously. I don’t see the Jesuits lasting more than another century if they keep at it.
Why do so many Bishops hide there Crucifix under there port jacket?
Same reason you don’t see roman collars. Not to mention cassocks
I accidentally gave you a thumbs down when I meant to click on the “Reply” link. The Bishop’s Crucifixes are heavy and at times they can dangle dangerously in the way and could get caught in something, just like a ring on a working man or woman can be dangerous in certain jobs. I think the bishops have an inside pocket for the purpose of getting them out of the way if needed. At other times they show them. Some might have bad motives, but in most cases, I think it is just a practicality.
Another example to my last post: if one has on a beautiful crucifix, one will not want it to bang against a desk or other object as one leans over. Bishop Barron’s crucifix chain looks quite long.: Bishop Sheen wore his outside when he was filming, but I doubt he kept it outside all the time unless it was shorter.
You sorta prove my point. Bishop Sheen was very media savvy for the time. His full bishop battle rattle was his and our uniform as miles christi. Is B Barron less savvy? Surely he KNOWS how to wear a pectoral?
Maybe he is afraid of impersonating. (Laughter.) No, different time, different type of suit.
Don’t forget, a bishop’s pectoral cross is blessed and holy. They also wear blessed and holy episcopal rings. Every part of a priest’s, bishop’s or pope’s ecclesiastical attire, has great religious meaning and holiness. The pectoral cross must be tucked into the bishop’s vest pocket at times, to keep it from swinging around, or banging on something. Every bishop is allowed to wear his own style of pectoral cross/crucifix.
They shouldn’t wear the pectoral cross that has Jesus the Good Shepherd with one of his feet pointing backwards. That’s a demonic symbol, but it’s worn by some bishops.
I have never heard of that religious symbol– (or Satanic symbol?) What does it mean? Which bishops are wearing that as their pectoral cross– and for what reason, exactly?
I found it here:
https://motheofgod.com/threads/our-holy-fathers-strange-pectoral-cross.16404/
Well, that is an interesting article– but is the pope aware of the demonic concepts attributed to that style of a crucifix? As for myself, I only like traditional crucifixes– not heavily stylized ones, of modern artists. I have always strongly disliked Pope Francis’ crucifix. And didn’t much like Pope St. John Paul II’s crucifix, with the modrernistic, stylized, bent cross, either. Actually, I think a pectoral cross/crucifix is just a personal choice– regardless, it is holy and blessed, a sacramental— and we all must respect it.
Just another order in need of reform. Nothing new in the history of the Church. It’s just that the Catholic Church’s history is there for all to see with all our warts. Yet here we are. Protestants and EO can freely conceal their warts because they are no threat to the world. The Catholic Church is a threat to the world and it’s demonic prince. The name James Martin, as all the rest of the particular names down the centuries have been, will be forgotten.
Jesuits pray? That’s so pre-Vatican II!
They sure don’t pray the gay away.
I’ll answer two questions posed here: 1. Fr. Richard Neuhaus once spoke of having lunch with a group of young Jesuit scholastics and asking them that same question, “With all that has happened to the order why do you want to become Jesuits now”? Their answer: “We will inherit the mess, the chaos, and the disaster, but WE will REBUILD what Inigño envisioned for the church. We are in love with Our Lord and Ignatian spirituality”. As to bishops tucking their pectoral cross into the breast pocket of their vests, well…bishops have been doing that for about 200 years. It is just a way to keep it from swinging, banging, and/or being damaged when dressed in a clerical suit, much in the way they hook it to the button of their cassock when they are wearing one.
How many Jesuits does it take to change a lightbulb?
Depends: One if Fr. Fessio.
A dozen or more, if at LMU or USF, and they still can’t change a lightbulb: they need to accompany the “out” bulb and affirm its condition. It can’t be changed.
None, if the Pope. He simply issues a motu proprio and it’s changed by others.
