The other night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Michelle Wolf, who I’m told is a comedian, regaled the black-tie and sequin-gowned crowd with her “jokes.” Almost all were in extremely bad taste and/or wildly offensive, but one has become accustomed to that sort of coarseness in the comedy clubs and even on mainstream television. However, she crossed over into the territory of the morally appalling when she indulged in this bit of witticism regarding Vice President Mike Pence: “He thinks abortion is murder, which, first of all, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. And when you do try it, really knock it, you know. You gotta get that baby out of there.” One is just at a loss for words. I mean, even some in the severely left-leaning crowd in Washington groaned a bit at that remark.
It might be helpful to remind ourselves what Ms. Wolf is referencing when she speaks of “knocking that baby out of there.” She means the evisceration, dismemberment, and vivisection of a child. And lest one think that we are just talking about “bundles of cells,” it is strict liberal orthodoxy that a baby can be aborted at any stage of its prenatal development, even while it rests in the birth canal moments before birth. Indeed, a child, who somehow miraculously survives the butchery of an abortion, should, according to that same orthodoxy, be left to die or actively killed. Sure sounds like fun to me; hey, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.
I realize that these attitudes have been enshrined in American law for some time, but what particularly struck me about the Correspondents’ Dinner was how they were being bandied about so shamelessly for the entertainment of the cultural elite. Let’s face it, the people in that room—politicians, judges, writers, broadcasters, government officials—are the top of the food chain, among the most influential and powerful people in our society. And while the killing of children was being joked about—especially, mind you, the children of the poor, who are disproportionately represented among the victims of abortion—most in this wealthy, overwhelmingly white, elite audience guffawed and applauded.
When we live in the space beyond good and evil, when morality is construed as entirely the invention of personal freedom, when nothing counts as intrinsically wicked, when any claim to moral authority is automatically shouted-down—in other words, when we live in the world that Nietzsche made possible—then the will of the most powerful necessarily holds sway. And when something or someone gets in the way of what the powerful want, well then, they just “gotta knock it out of there.” Michelle Wolf’s comment was not just a bad joke; it was a brazen display of power, designed to appeal precisely to those who have reached the top of the greasy pole.
One of the extraordinary but often overlooked qualities of a system of objective morality is that it is a check on the powerful and a protection of the most vulnerable. If good and evil are objective states of affairs, then they hem in and control the tendency of cultural elites to dominate others. When objective moral values evanesce, armies of the expendable emerge, and what Pope Francis aptly calls a cultura del descarte (a throwaway culture) obtains. One of the indicators that this has happened is lots of people in tuxedos and formal gowns, sipping from wine glasses, and laughing while someone jokes about the murder of children.

Wait… didn’t Bishop Barron get the memo from Pope Francis that the Church isn’t supposed to be fixated on abortion anymore? I’m sure Ms. Wolf has all the proper credentials in her support of the climate, the poor, immigrants, minorities, and her opposition to guns and the death penalty, etc. That makes her pro-life according to seamless garment theorists, or at least 4/5 pro-life. So what’s the problem?
Speakers at the Los Angeles Religious Ed Congress have similar views as Ms. Wolf, they just aren’t so vulgar about it. So what’s the problem?
“I mean, even some in the severely left-leaning crowd in Washington groaned a bit at that remark. ”
Some…like, five of them? The rest were howling at her routine. And the rest of us are the deplorable…right.
is this any longer a country
worth fighting and dying for ??
What joke?
She said she knew it was a baby and she said acknowledge it was murder.
This is the latest “pro-choice” position.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a baby, if it’s a child, if it’s murder, if it’s taking a human life.
It’s what we want and we are entitled to anything we want.
You thought it was a joke?
Her humor is outrageous because she tells the truth.
It’s not funny but people laugh when they are uncomfortable.
She acknowledged that abortion is murdering a baby. She didn’t say fetus. She didn’t talk about reproductive rights or a war against women.
She told the truth. Abortion is murdering a baby.
It is called desensitization.
Praise be to God for Bishop Barron! This is the new American culture: death!
If the good Bishop is going to cite law, he should at least get it correct. He suggests abortion just before birth is legal. I believe the current standards have strict time limits on the legality of abortion. If he wants to change those limits, or outlaw abortion entirely, please say so clearly.
Yes, abortion is morally wrong. However , there are specific methods to change secular law.
Nine states and Washington DC have no restrictions on abortion.
Satin is on fire in the hearts of these people !!! And this is what most Democrats support ? Many, many from the Church Hierarchy and the Vatican support those attached to these same people
Last year the bishop said this about not reversing gay marriage: “…right now in the States, I’ll apply the Aquinas principle. I think it would probably cause much more problems and dissension and difficulty if we keep pressing it.”
Funny how he chooses what to press and what not to press. Because, you see, as with the example of this woman’s jokes about abortion, liberals keep pressing and pressing their side. When Christians give up pressing on anything we lose.
I’m glad to see the bishop speaking out against this vileness. He should speak out against other things too, not only when liberals go beyond the pale.
Bishop Baron writes a scathing rebuke of the stand-up “comic” and too many writers take him to the woodshed. As usual, no good deed goes unpunished!
One of the unfortunate side effects of social media, comment boxes, and the corrosion of civil society is that almost everyone’s immediate reaction to anything is to take offense, find fault and criticize. Tearing other people down doesn’t build yourself up, but it can at least make you feel superior. I think that’s what people are trying to do. Everyone’s a critic.
Good grief, Bob One. It’s not taking a man to the woodshed to ask him to do his job.
I think Miss Wolf was merely embodying pro-about talking points. If I remember correctly, Planned Parenthood or NARAL had recommended that people talk the truth as if it were without horror [as if it were morally identical to a truth extraction.]
Sadly, such talk, if it catches on, will Inevitably morph from abortion to human life in general.
I meant to say “tooth extraction”: not “truth extraction.” Interestingly, I think truth extraction works as well. :)
I’m sure that some of the folks in their finery were afraid not to laugh lest they be considered not cool; on the other hand perhaps some are so inured to the butchery that pervades our culture that they actually thought this “comedienne” was funny. God help us!
I could not get passed the screechy, unpleasant voice of this woman long enough to hear very much of what she said. What is it about some women now days in their race to the bottom to be more vulgar and disgusting than the worst of men.
My post, Anne RE
Amen to Bishop Barron shedding light on the “ culture of desth”. Abortion is nothing to laugh at. Murder of babies is our country greatest sin.
These correspondents are part of the Obama crowd. Undoubtedly many of them have procured abortions for themselves so they view abortion as no big deal and something to celebrate. It would be interesting to know if any of the former president’s girlfriends obtained abortions.
William Roberts – this has nothing to do with Obama! It would be interesting to know if any girl friends of the current occupant of the White House obtained abortions!
The people who push this vulgarity on the country object to Trump being vulgar.
You cannot really believe that Michelle Wolf is the enemy here. The Correspondent’s organization and their masters — the Democratic Party — are true Satan’s children. Michelle did pretty well for herself; more and big time gigs to follow. She is no Kathy Gifford.
What about Bishop Baron? His reference to Pope Francis is a laughter when discussing the loss of “objective morality.” Francis, and the Vatican and the Office of Bishops (some exceptions) are craven cowards of Liberalism; they despise objective morality. But they love power, absolute power, and likely would have no issue with humor like that dished out by that boring, but execrable, woman.
Hey, she said ‘Baby’!
Bp Barron rightly agonizes. Meanwhile, the abortion views of his American flock differ little from the population at large.
Sadly, Barron stoops to playing the race card, what with the “wealthy white elite” crack, etc. Seems to be the party line in his circles.
