The following comes from a Mar. 7 story on the Catholic News Agency website.
In lengthy excerpts of an interview published in an Italian newspaper, Benedict XVI speaks of his time collaborating with John Paul II, highlighting the deceased Pope’s sanctity and commitment to the truth.
“In the years of collaboration with him it became ever more clear to me that John Paul II was a saint,” the retired pontiff told Polish journalist Wlodzimierz Redzioch in a written interview, selections of which appeared in Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on March 7.
Published as part of the book Beside JPII: Friends and Collaborators Speak, released by Italian press agency Italian Edizioni Ares, Benedict’s written interview was originally requested by Redzioch in Nov. of 2013, which he agreed to and completed in Jan. of this year.
During the interview, retired pontiff Benedict XVI recalled that he originally met John Paul II in the conclave where John Paul I was elected Pope, explaining how they had both read each others’ work previously and had been wanting to meet each other.
Observing how the then Cardinal Wojtyla had quoted his Introduction to Christianity during the spiritual exercises he preached for Pope Paul VI in 1979, Benedict noted that “it is as if, interiorly, we both were expecting to meet each other.”
“Above all, I immediately and greatly perceived the human fascination that he exuded, and from the way he prayed I noted how deeply united to God he was.”
Speaking of his appointment by John Paul II as Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Benedict recalled how the Blessed allowed him to continue publishing theological works for his home diocese, and that he was “always very gracious and accommodating with me.”
Referring to certain doctrinal challenges which the two faced during their years of working together, Benedict XVI noted that the first major topic that came up was Liberation Theology.
“Both in Europe and in North America, it was common opinion that it was a support to the poor and, therefore, that it was a cause that surely needed to be approved,” he explained.
However, “it was an error,” stated the retired pontiff, adding that “Poverty and the poor were, without a doubt, set at the center of the Liberation Theology, yet in a very specific perspective…It was said that it was not a question of help or of reforms, but rather of the great upheaval from which a new world would spring.”
Observing how “the Christian faith was being used as a motor for this revolutionary movement, transforming it into a political force,” Benedict explained that “A falsification of the Christian faith needed to be opposed precisely for the sake of the poor and in favor of the service rendered to them.”
Drawing attention to John Paul II’s experience with Marxism in Poland, which Benedict referred to as “the godmother of liberation theology,” the retired pontiff emphasized that it was “on the basis of his painful experience,” that made it “clear to him that it was necessary to fight that kind of ‘liberation.’”
Turning to his decision to open JPII’s cause for beatification, which advanced the times established by Canon Law, Benedict noted that he had been convinced of the Blessed’s sanctity for many years due to his “his intense relationship with God,” and his immersion “with the Lord.”
“From here came his happiness, in the midst of the great fatigues that he had to sustain, and the courage with which he carried out his task in a truly difficult time,” Benedict recalled.
“John Paul II did not ask for applause, nor did he ever look around concerned about how his decisions would be received. He acted beginning with his faith and from his convictions and he was also ready to receive blows….”

GREAT, JUST GREAT: PRAISING INFAMOUS CHILD MOLESTERS!
Blessed John Paul II’s 2004 meeting with and praise of the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, who later was banished to a life of penance because of sexual abuse, was a mistake, said the late Pope’s longtime secretary.
“The Holy Father should not have received that individual,” said Polish Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow, who served as personal secretary to the former Pope for 39 years.
“Benedict XVI speaks of his time collaborating with John Paul II, highlighting the deceased Pope’s sanctity and commitment to the truth.” THE TRUTH? REALLY? Sadly, the most significant but disappointing legacy of Pope John Paul II was his decision to play down the clergy sex abuse of minors. He initially “blamed American culture” and didn’t treat it as a big deal. But particularly bad is that he thought to “rescue” Boston’s Cardinal Law from hostile critics by letting Law skulk over to Vatican City. By doing so, John Paul II rewarded or at least shrugged off Law’s disgusting pattern of transferring sexually abusive priests to other parishes, where of course they simply corralled more children and adolescent boys to engage in sexually deviant practices, ruining hundreds of lives. Pope John Paul II gave him a famous church in Rome to head and allowed him to continue serving as an active cardinal with important, newsworthy, media-covered roles at the Vatican. Meanwhile, brave, persistent laity kept investigating the disgusting widespread crimes, and former victims dared to come forward, often suing the Archdiocese of Boston for multi-millions of dollars. Thus about 100 churches in the diocese were closed, nothing harsh happened to most priests, the only ones feeling punished were the thousands of laity who lost churches that they of course had paid for being built.—Janette Cranshaw, a reader from Belmont, Massachusetts – See more at: https://www.uscatholic.org/blog/2011/04/john-paul-ii-unaccountable-abused#sthash.bZEHPAL0.dpuf
The laity did little to expose priest child abuse and the church coverup. JP2 and B16 condoned, encouraged, and ordered the coverup of priest child abuse everywhere in the church. Some of the catholic victims somehow mounted, and still do, one of the most courageous efforts to expose these crimes against humanity by these two popes. Most all of the victims were unable to stand up to the church as they had been so severely damaged by the abuse done to them. The current pope will do little or nothing to really give all the victims and their families any justice for what was done to them. What was done to all of them was and is criminal (felony ). The current pope was elected to save all the perpetrators and enablers collective criminal hides. There is now tons of released documentation obtained by the victims. The church has no more excuses as to what really happened. They can no longer stand on a holy pulpit and lie about it any longer.

And then apologize for your lies and slander against Popes JPII and Benedict XVI.
Don’t merely repeat what you read in the media or other people’s posts – investigate at the Source before inserting foot in mouth. The Source are the Popes written directives themselves not some blogs by those who would defame our Popes.

In 2002, Pope John Paul II stated, “there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young”.

Personally we all should be outrages at the lies perpetrated against our Holy and good Popes.
The Vatican has issued all KINDS of directives and outraged statements, but the truth is that people with money (like the Legionaries of Christ) made an impact and got away with murder.
The Vatican also acted quite outraged, but still behaved in a manner aimed at protecvting powerful clerics (like Cardinal Law), rather than throwing him in the slammer as he so richly deserved.
Actions speak louder than words…
“Q. In your opinion, Holy Father, what are the most significant moments of the Pontificate of John Paul II?
“A. We can see it (the Pontificate) from two perspectives: one ‘ad extra’ – toward the world – and the other ‘ad intra’ – toward the Church. With regard to the world, it seems to me that through his speeches, his person, his presence, his capacity to convince, the Holy Father created a new sensitivity for moral values, for the importance of religion in the world. This has created a new opening, a new sensitivity towards religion and the need for a religious dimension in man. Above all, the importance of the Bishop of Rome has increased immensely. Despite the differences and despite their non-recognition of the Successor of Peter, all Christians have recognized that he is the spokesman of Christianity. No one else in the world, on an international level can speak in the name of Christianity like this and give voice and strength to the Christian reality in the world today. He was the spokesman of the great values of humanity for non Christians and other religions too. He managed to create a climate of dialogue among the great religions and a sense of common responsibility that we all have for the world. He also stressed that violence and religion are incompatible and that we must search for the path to peace together, taking common responsibility for humanity. Regarding the situation of the Church, I would say that, first of all, he knew how to infuse enthusiasm for Christ in young people. This is something new, if we think of the youth of late sixties and seventies. That youth has become enthusiastic for Christ and for the Church and for difficult values. It was his personality and charisma that helped mobilize the youth of the world for the cause of God and for the love of Christ. In the Church, he created a new love for the Eucharist. We are still in the Year of the Eucharist, called by him with so much love.
Interview with Pope Benedict on Polish Television

Initially, in speaking of the Pope’s legacy, I forgot to mention the many documents that he left us – 14 encyclicals, many Pastoral Letters, and others. All this is a rich patrimony that has not yet been assimilated by the Church. My personal mission is not to issue many new documents, but to ensure that his documents are assimilated, because they are a rich treasure, they are the authentic interpretation of Vatican II. We know that the Pope was a man of the Council, that he internalized the spirit and the word of the Council. Through these writings he helps us understand what the Council wanted and what it didn’t. This helps us to be the Church of our times and of the future.
Same source as above
On April 27, Blessed John Paul II will be canonized.
CANONIZATION
Declaration by the Pope that a deceased person is raised to the full honors of the altar, i.e., a saint after previously having been beatified. Two miracles credited to the beatus (feminine: beata) are usually required before canonization to attest the heroic virtue of the saint. Beatification allows veneration of the blessed, canonization requires it. The canonization is celebrated at St. Peter’s and is usually followed by a solemn triduum in another church in the city or elsewhere within a limited time.
BLASPHEMY
Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God. Its gravity may be judged by the capital punishment on the Old Testament, severe penalties of the Church, and in many cases also of the State for blasphemous speech or conduct. In order for a person to sin gravely in this manner, he must use blasphemous expressions and realize the contemptuous meaning of what he says or does.
Canonized or not, Pope John Paul II held the founder of the Legionaries of Christ up for adoration, in spite of the piles of evidence revealing him as a molester of child (including his own two sons).
Cardinal Ratzinger could not clamp down on Maciel until after John Paul II’s death, because Pope John Paul II would not allow it!
This is evil, and we can’t pretend otherwise.
We also can’t pretend that all saints were ‘saintly’ from the moment of birth, which is okay — maybe John Paul II repented of his great sins before he died, as he should have done.
They said he went to confession weekly.
He must indeed be a saint The posters here hate him just like Our blessed Lord was hated.
There are Catholic heretics and schismatics both on the far RIGHT, and on the far LEFT who attack our Popes in the media. – “Both are a disgrace, and disservice to the Faithful”.

CCC: “2089 INCREDULITY is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it.
HERESY is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same;
APOSTACY is the total repudiation of the Christian faith;
SCHISM is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.”
Those who have stated Popes JPII and Benedict XVI have done nothing or little to stop abuse have committed mortal sins, in addition to the lies.

This group says it uses “newspaper accounts – NOT COURT TRANSCRIPTS” only for the true facts.
People are innocent until proven guilty.
Those who are CONVICTED of child abuse whether it be the act or aiding and abetting should be in jail.
CONVICTION is the key word, not accusations – many of which are FALSE.
They have released files from settlements.
Per their own web site, most of their reporting is done from news articles. They have not included information on those Clergy who are dead or in jail. They have not included info on those still alive who have been defrocked.
In most cases they have not included the year that the real or alleged abuse took place.
Alleged can be innocent clergy. I know of at least two cases in the last 5 years that made splashes in the press where the Priests were innocent. The Priests were not even in this Country when the liars made the false allegations. (Good thing I’m not in charge or I would have sue them for defamation. They only wanted money from the Diocese.)
All court cases (including criminal proceedings) should be public.
Let’s make it clear that I support legitimate claims. Call the Police first, and then notify the Diocese Bishop’s Office – so the Priest will be removed from contact with children until/unless he has been cleared by the Civil authorities.
Introduction to the Archives. The core of BishopAccountability.org’s library and online holdings is a remarkable collection of tens of thousands of diocesan and religious order documents. On this page, we provide an overview of that document collection. We summarize the archives and the circumstances of their release, with links to selected archives, and we offer a sampling of individual documents to show the breadth of the collection. This introduction is updated often. Refresh your browser to see the latest additions, and email us to suggest documents we should include. The archives were made public in connection with sexual abuse complaints – after criminal investigations or document discovery in litigation. But the significance of the archives transcends the legal proceedings from which they emerged, and the often protracted battles to unseal some of the files. Part 1 of 2
Mike, Have you ever heard of the statute of limitations? This is how the criminal priests and their enablers remain free and continue their crimes against Catholic children and humanity. So far the Catholic Church has done everything it possibly can to fight against ending the statute of limitations for child abuse and rape, and you still advocate for the criminal actions of the Church over the protection of its own children as well as the rest of the children outside the Church. Bishop Accountability has everything about priest child abuse, including court documents (lots of them). The 2007 LA settlement has every priest abusers file and it is all there for you or anyone else to look over, The Church (Cardinal Mahoney) was supposed to turn the files over to all the victims as he promised in court. It took another 5 plus years to get them released. If you need or really want the truth then it can be found in Bishop Accountability.org.
Write to your State Legislators when the Statute of Limitations is too short.
This is a civil legislative matter.
I agree that Mahony should be in jail. He (and a few others like him) belong in jail.
Archbishop Gomez let’s Mahony get away with too much within the LA Diocese these days.
Part 2 of 2. Mike, After the court orders and the settlements, a treasure trove of documents is now in the public domain. But the archives are scattered in courthouses from Maine to California – our goal is to gather them all and make them more easily accessible to the public. This archive of archives is of course vitally important for anyone working to understand sexual abuse and its mismanagement in the Catholic church. As such, the archives complement our database of accused priests, our collection of investigative reports, our blog of daily news coverage, our collection of survivors’ accounts, and our archives of church documents. But the document archives also offer a remarkably detailed case study for anyone working on sexual abuse and harassment in other institutions, and for scholars working on institutional response to crises. The archives will also be of great interest to anyone concerned with issues in Catholicism other than the sexual abuse of children – day-to-day church operations, episcopal relationships with the Vatican, ministry to ethnic communities, changes before and after the Second Vatican Council, and countless other topics.
Oh thank God your name is Mike, not Peter. With a person dolling out mortal sins with such vigor, without so much as asking a person’s knowledge or opinion, would be a harsh rock on which to build a church. Thank God I am in communion with the See of Peter, not the See of MIKE.
YFC –
From the SEE of PETER – Catholic Church –
(not the See of heretic and schismatic ” Your Fellow Catholic”) –
The “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” – abbreviated as CCC.
CCC: ” 1859 Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God’s law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice.
Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.”
CCC: “1791 This ignorance can often be imputed to personal responsibility. This is the case when a man takes little trouble to find out what is true and good,
or when conscience is by degrees almost blinded through the habit of committing sin.
In such cases, the person is culpable for the evil he commits.”
Literate persons who know of the existence of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” and have not bothered to read it, have no excuse for lack of knowledge.
People who have read direct quotes from the CCC have no excuse not to check out those quotes and adhere to the CCC.
Because of my posts (and the posts of others) who have directly quoted Church teaching, you have no excuses to commit Mortal Sins that have been discussed.
Like I said MIKE, your inability to grasp the mercy of Christ, the primacy of conscience, and the many other paragraphs of CCC which deal with not assuming the worst in people and adjudicating judgement prematurely is itself a scandal.
As typical YFC -you are a liar and continue to try to lead people into sin by your position that homosexual acts and sodomy marriage are wonderful.
I never said Jesus would not or could not forgive anything. However 1) we must repent of our sins, and 2) and sin no more (meaning we have to stop committing the sinful act or do everything we can to stop). Read your Bible.
Primacy of conscience does not trump the requirement to educate oneself in order to continue committing sin.
CCC: 1783 Conscience MUST be informed and moral judgment enlightened. A well-formed conscience is upright and truthful. It formulates its judgments according to reason, in conformity with the true good willed by the wisdom of the Creator.
The education of conscience is indispensable for human beings who are subjected to negative influences and tempted by sin to prefer their own judgment and to reject authoritative teachings.”
To educate your conscience (not according to Mike) according to the BIBLE: 1 Rom:24-27; 1 Cor 6: 9-10; 1 Tim 1:10.
CCC: 2357, 2358, 2359, 2386.
Point to one place in which I said that homosexual “acts” are wonderful? Or to one place in the scriptures in which same sex civil marriages are discussed. Or to one place in which people are permitted to ignore their conscience. Until you can find these references, please refrain from falsely accusing me of being a liar.
The See of MIKE does a lot to dissuade folks from believing that the sex abuse scandal is real. Which is only one part of the case against the See of MIKE as a faith to be followed. True Catholics get the scandal presented to them, and will take every effort to rid our Church of its true causes.
All Popes (including St. Peter) are human beings and not perfect. We must not expect perfection of any individual on this earth, unless you want to call God a Liar who has clearly told us we are all sinners.
But the attacks on this page of posts of our Popes is inexcusable, and has got to stop!
The mortal sins of Calumny, Detraction, and Rash Judgement must stop.
Sandy, when people point out the faults of Pope John Paul II (or of Saint Peter, the first Pope, for that matter), it is NOT a mortal sin, and it does NOT need to stop.
We need more light in the Catholic Church when things go wrong — whether it’s a problem at the Vatican, a molestation disaster in a parish, or a financial mess in a diocese.
Pope John Paul II was a sinner, as am I, but as the Supreme Pontiff his sins (such as promoting Maciel, an infamous child molester) have a much larger impact than mine, precisely because he was a public figure, and the head of the Catholic Church.
As Catholics, we don’t need to pretend our Popes are beyond reproach, any more than we need to pretend we ourselves are beyond reproach!
Anonymous – No one is perfect, but you do not accomplish anything by rehashing trying to harm the reputation of a deceased Pope and our Church..
– – – – Things only need to be made public to change things for the better. Your real goal is evil because you are merely gossiping that will NOT change anything for the better.
Mike already posted the links to the actions of our Popes that has lead to significant change within the Church regarding abuse, and You choose to ignore the truth.

Anonymous – you only wish you were as good as Blessed John Paul II. Do not compare yourself to him.
You have no first hand info on exactly who knew what facts and when, so cut the despicable bad mouthing of a dead Pope.
The only goal of speaking out against any leader of the Church must be to make things better.
Changing the behavior of a dead Pope is not going happen, so drop it.
If you are Catholic at all, go to confession.
Dan V., okay, I won’t compare myself to, as you so lovingly phrase it, “a dead Pope.”
I’m compare myself to you, instead — unlike you, I believe the truth will set us free.
The recent PBS documentary on the corruption in the Vatican shows us that the Church is in perpetual need of purification, including the Popes.
Anonymous –
Truth and openness is always important – when it will accomplish something good. Publishing accusations that are unproved are calmny and detraction. As well as lying that the Church is doing nothing.
For truth – please start also advertising what the Church has done and continues to do to stop abuse. because half truths are lies.
Here are the facts for you to advertise for the truth:
1983 Code of Canon Law: “1395 §2. Clearly, his promulgation of the “CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition” is the highlight of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate.
The CCC keeps us all accurately educated in this world of secularism, materialism relativism, heresy, and schism, and error.
It helps us to call truth “truth” and lies “lies”, and to recognize errors that are taught within the Church and outside the Church.

(And thank you Mike for the ACCURATE links regarding what our Popes have done regarding abuse – and how those teachings helped to put the system into place that we have today.)
I could go on for pages and pages of the wonderful things Pope John Paul II has done for us and our Church.
Funny – Not – but when I went to my Parish Priest (Danielson in Plesaanton) with a copy of the document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith written by then Cardinal Ratzinger and approved by John Paul the Second…
Clearly outlining the teachings of the Church on the Intrinsically Disordered Nature of the ‘orientation’ and the Objective Evil of Homosex Behavior – I was told to get lost, literally.
As there was no room in the ‘open and welcoming’ Parish for those who actually Believed what the Pope and his Wise Counselor had co clearly and unequivocally made public – not in Danielson’s Personal, Realm.
In a Church of a Billion Souls – all of whom are Sinners in one way or another at one time or another – cliques of insiders (as exposed by Michael Rose in his book “Goodbye Good Men” and others, like Church Militant TV & Lifesite News today) – who subvert and pervert such Wise Moral Teachings do exist.
All one need do is look at the host of Anonymous Homosex Harpy Trolls who infest this board with Anti-Catholic Lies and Hate to promote Pandering to Perversion, to realize how relentless the Evil One and his willing minions are at subverting the Truth.
Over the ages, there are so many encyclicals, etc.
Just take your “CCC 2nd Ed” when you talk to a Priest or Bishop.
Flag the pertainent paragraphs prior to your meeting, so you are ready.
Keep it simple.
And using a Bible marker that will not bleed through, highlight the following in the CCC for continued use:
“ The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I approved … and the publication of which I today order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of catholic doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition and the Church’s Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion. “ – Pope John Paul II (CCC pg 5)
and
“….the CATECHISM has raised throughout the world, even among non-Christians, and confirms its purpose of being presented as a full, complete exposition of Catholic doctrine, enabling everyone to know what the Church professes, celebrates, lives, and prays in her daily life.” – Pope John Paul II (CCC pg xiv)
Most priests can handle it when people do that but really it is kind of obnoxious behavior. It makes it look like you are looking for a fight. And that you are putting yourself above the priest. Usually, prayer is the best thing that you can do, asking God to reveal to him what you think he needs to know. If after prayer, you feel that it is God’s will for you to speak to him, just go humbly and meekly without documentation and let the Holy Spirit speak through you. If the priest asks for it, then you can tell him where he could find the documentation.
Thank you for taking the time to post so many incredibly informative posts and links and for always shining the light of truth. May God bless you Michael McDermott! Keep up the good work. It is so edifying and encouraging to see someone who has paid a great price still use their gift of a brilliant God given intellect to still care about the salvation of souls and serve His Truths.
Catherine, you never cease to amaze. Michael McDermott, the poster that supports Scott Lively who went to Uganda to convince/help them to pass the “Kill The Gay Bill”. Gee Catherine, what’s next?
Those posters who want to live a life of MORTAL SIN,
want to take as many Souls as possible to HELL with them –
or they would not bother posting anything on a Catholic site and merely go about their own business.
ANDREW, You are absolutely right!
Blessed John Paul II, we know you loved us — all of us — and you were never ready to condemn anyone on just an accusation but required proof. You truly believed that a “man is innocent until proven guilty”. That is why, John Paul II, many Americans loved you. May we all be less guilty of rash judgment because of you. God only knows I have been guilty of such at times. Mea culpa!
I wrote what I did because one priest was recently exonerated by both civil and religious courts of abuse against an under-aged girl and several others have been exonerated by civil authorities and the Church in the past. Anyone can accuse anyone of something if they do not like what they teach or they are out for money. Yes, strict rules must be made at Catholic, public and other schools and places that work with children to protect youngsters from sexual abuse, and those who are really guilty punished, but the only thing as evil as abusing a child is deliberately falsely accusing someone of doing so. We cannot rush to judgment but MUST get the facts.
The Anonymous post at 10:15 am was mine.
We must remember always to study and follow the teachings of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Never be distracted by the failings of individual priests, anyone ordained, or any other mere human being, inside or outside of the Church, in your devotion to the Holy Trinity and Our Blessed Mother. When a priest harmed, devastated and shocked me as a teenager, directly causing a death in my family and indirectly causing another, I swooned for years and even questioned God Himself, feeling everything Catholic that I’d learned growing up. For over 50 yearsI was terrified to enter a Catholic church for fear of what might happen to me next. It took years of therapy for me to gain the courage to sneak into the back of a Catholic church to attend Mass and attempt to determine if I could reconcile with the Church I had loved so well for all my life prior to that event. That took longer than I would have guessed for me to forgive the Church for what had happened to me and my family members. Actually, I came to see that the Church itself had not harmed me, but a priest and others within the Church – a big difference. My mistake was letting bad individuals and a horrifying experience come between me and my faith, which is in Jesus Christ Himself, not in the Church, or any popes or priests or anyone else, each of whom is merely a human being, not unlike myself insofar as my humanity.
POPE JOHN PAUL II AND THE CHILD ABUSE DISASTER:
Moreover, on the greatest internal crisis facing the church, the pope failed, time and again, to take decisive action in response to clear evidence of a criminal underground in the priesthood, a subculture that sexually traumatized tens of thousands of youngsters. Despite a 1984 warning memo from the Rev. Thomas Doyle, then a canon lawyer in the Vatican Embassy in Washington, and a ninety-three-page report on the problem co-written by Doyle in 1985, which was sent to every American bishop, John Paul ordered no outreach to victims, no binding policy to rid the priesthood of deviants. In 1989 the US conference of bishops sent experts in canon law to Rome, seeking a streamlined process for defrocking child molesters rather than waiting for the byzantine Vatican bureaucracy and final word from the pope. John Paul refused. Litigation and prosecutions spread, but the pope remained passive.
In the 1990s John Paul began to make a famous series of apologies for past church sins, particularly anti-Semitism, calling for “purification of the historical memory.” He apologized for church racism, the Inquisition, the Crusades, to Galileo, and to Indians—a stirring line of atonement. But he did not include children abused by priests. Finally, after extensive media coverage in the United States, Canada, Australia and Ireland, he did voice concern for victims—but he also scolded the media, accusing them of sensationalism. John Paul’s myopia stemmed from a chivalrous idea of religious life, born of his years as the leader of a Polish church that functioned in opposition to the Communist regime. Under such harsh conditions, he considered church unity paramount, and he saw that unity vindicated when the Iron Curtain fell.
In April 2002, as coverage of the scandals hit critical mass, an ailing John Paul, bloated from treatment for Parkinson’s disease, summoned the American cardinals to Rome. Reading a statement for cameras, the pope called clergy abuse “an appalling sin” and said the priesthood had no room for such men; he also called on “the power of Christian conversion,” implying redemption for sex offenders. Instead of promulgating a clear policy on defrocking abusers, he absolved the bishops of their “generalized lack of knowledge,” faulting “the advice of clinical experts.” He thus put the blame on therapists rather than on the bishops who recycled child molesters.
I think Blessed John Paul II’s own high level of integrity and sanctity combined with his idealization of the priesthood to make it difficult for him to believe the allegations in the numbers that they occurred. It was reported that when he finally was made known of the extent of the problem he held his head in his hands and said “How could this happen?’
You have given us a timely reminder that it is not human perfection that makes one a saint. Saints are not people who never made a mistake. Saints are not people who never made somebody mad. The truth is that Pope John Paul II went to heaven when he died. His sins were forgiven. His errors were overlooked. This is promise of the Gospel. This is the victory Christ won for us on the Cross. This is the treasure given to us in the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. This is the love of our Lord. Take hope from it.
Bishops look to the pope for leadership. But in the worst scandal of his papacy, John Paul ignored serious allegations of abuse against Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the archconservative religious order known as the Legion of Christ. In fact, the pope defiantly praised the long-accused pedophile for six years after a group of Maciel’s victims filed a canon law case in 1998. The group sought his excommunication before Cardinal Ratzinger’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which was gradually assuming control over such proceedings.
Anonymous – So what do you expect to accomplish from your post?
Pope JPII has been deceased since 2005.
Do you personally know – who knew all exact facts that were know, and exactly when they were known?
Were you a first hand witness, or are you merely repeating what others have told you?
Please provide LEGAL links for your accusations – ie Court cases which always include dates, etc.
(NOT secular news reports that can be false, nor heretical links that support your theory.)
QUOTE: “It must be absolutely clear to the Catholic faithful, and to the wider community, that Bishops and superiors are concerned, above all else, with the spiritual good of souls. People need to know that there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young. ” UNQUOTE Pope JOHN PAUL II – April, 2002.

Betty, there are so many Catholic priest abuse legal court documents and files out there than one could imagine.most all of them are tough reads if you ever try to read any of them. If you are tired of hearing about priest abuse in the U.S., then take a look at Ireland (Ryan and Murphy reports). Use a search engine…. Catholic priest abuse released legal court files/documents

What side of the equation do you stand on?
Jim Jr – Although one is too many, you greatly exaggerate (lie) about the numbers abused. Provide your proof using links to civil convictions which is matter of fact and public record.

Sorry Betty. It is very true. It’s all out there for you. You need to do what I did and go find these thing out for yourself if it really means anything to you. This is a large scale world wide coverup by the Vatican. It is very horrific and sad. The current pope can turn this nightmare around and put the brakes on anytime he decides he wants to. It looks like he will follow in the foot steps of the other two. The Church is unable to stop/correct the priest abuse coverup. More pressure is going to come from the victims and their advocates to force the Church to reform and stop this insane secrecy and coverup of priest child abuse in the Church. The house of cards is already falling down around the Vatican. Bishop accountability .org can help. Good Luck
Betty is in some serious friggin denial.
Betty, while I agree with Saint JPII’s words that you quote. I think it is important to note that sainthood does not grant retroactive infallibility on all words utterred by the saint. Again, I agree with his words, but the fact that they were utterred by a saint give no weight to them beyond the truth that the words state.
POPE JOHN PAUL II’s SUPPORT FOR MACIEL THE CHILD MOLESTER:
Uneducated and mendacious, Maciel nevertheless had a genius for politics, and for personal relations. According to a former Jesuit with good knowledge of the story, one of the very first sizable donations that the Polish Solidarity movement received came from Maciel, who raised the money among the conservative Mexican elite he had so steadfastly cultivated. No doubt the Polish Karol Wojtyla heard about this act of generosity and appreciated Maciel’s ideological stance. The priest was at John Paul’s side throughout the first three of the Pope’s five visits to Mexico: Legionary money, its priests, and its very active laypersons’ movement, the Regnum Christi, strengthened the Polish Pope’s campaign to remove socially radical or liberal priests from positions of power and give ascendancy to his conservative Catholicism.
It is hard not to think that these are the reasons the Vatican ignored the detailed and heartwrenching letter sent in 1998 by Maciel’s eight accusers (the ninth member of the group having died.) Even as the public first became aware of the accusations through the Hartford Courant and the Mexican press, which picked up the story immediately, the Vatican refused to act. Instead, Pope John Paul II put forward the beatification of Maciel’s mother and of his uncle, Bishop Guízar. (The bishop is now Saint Guízar. Maciel’s mother is still going through the beatification process.) It was only in 2006, after John Paul’s death, that a Vatican communique announced that Maciel had been “invited to lead a reserved life of prayer and penitence.” He lived out his final years quietly and died in the United States. The Legionaries, however, have continued to grow in numbers and in wealth.
