Pope Francis is expected to appoint Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta to serve as the next Archbishop of Washington, multiple sources have independently reported to CNA. Gregory would become the seventh Archbishop of Washington, succeeding Cardinal Donald Wuerl.
A formal announcement could come as early as next week, sources say, though it has not yet been confirmed that the archbishop has accepted the appointment. Sources in Rome and the United States told CNA that Gregory was informed of the appointment earlier this week.
Technically, there has been no Archbishop of Washington since Cardinal Wuerl’s resignation was accepted in October 2018, but Wuerl himself has served as interim leader of the archdiocese since that time.
One source told CNA that because Washington has been an epicenter of the Church’s sexual abuse crisis, the background of potential candidates has been subject to more exacting scrutiny than is typical for episcopal appointments.
For that reason, the source emphasized, the likely appointment of Gregory could still be subject to change, even close to the announcement, if the Holy See or Gregory himself had reason to be concerned about his ability to address the problems relating to sexual abuse and misconduct that have plagued the Washington archdiocese.
“They absolutely want to get this one right,” the source told CNA.

The Vatican ‘Personnel Department’ is this close to nominating Gregory but may still be unsure of qualifications re: sex abuse? In today’s environment, I would think that is the first thing to be sure of in the selection process.
Mike,
There are ominous warnings here:

If true, he will be worse than the guy he will be replacing. Thanks Jorge.
Wilton Gregory, Bernardin groupie and James Martin booster, old news:

If this is true, what a disaster. The Lavender crowd is firmly in control.
With this supposed appointment comming so close to the event reported below, the acceptability same-sex attraction dosorder (Catechim’s word, not mine) and the active practice of engaging acts of depravity (Catechism”s word, not mine) will eventiallt be taught as “normal” by the Church:
https://www.lifesitenews.com/blogs/pope-francis-set-to-give-historic-speech-involving-persons-of-same-sex-leaked-letter-claims
The catechism doesn’t use the term “same-sex attraction dosorder”. Sorry to disappoint.
Homosexuality=disorder.
Tragically– our present Pope is running his own Church. It is not ours– for now. He is a “Cardinal Bernardine” kind of Pope! And Abp. Gregory is a “Cardinal Bernardine” kind of Archbishop! That’s the way it is!
Fraternal correction —- It is NOT the Holy Father’s Church, whoever he may be, past, present and future. It also is NOT the laity’s Church or the Church of any priest, bishop, cardinal, religious brother or sister.
The Church was established by Jesus Himself (Matt 16). It, therefore, is His and His alone.
Lou Varini— your “fraternal correction” is ridiculous!!! Catholics are simply tired of UNFAITHFUL prelates– seeking to hijack Christ’s holy Church!!
Lou Varini– the fact is– many faithless Catholic leaders have been very influential in running our Church, for decades, since the Council! The popular “Cardinal Bernardine” concept is heretical– a complete disaster! We desperately need good new leaders, faithful to Christ!
The Catholic leaders are not the Church.
Yes— but they are in visible, public positions of Church leadership– very sad!
The influence of the homoheresy of Cardinal Bernardin is carried on by Pope Francis, He who won’t have the Papal ring kissed.

As others have stated, Gregory’s reputation is problematic.
I became worried as soon as I read that AB Gregory is from Chicago and continues to have strong ties to Chicago. If this is the Pope trying to do his best to name a good bishop, God help us.
really think Francis needs to resign for the sake of the Church and for the sake of his own soul.
Does anybody at this point doubt that the Lavender Mafia has successfully conducted a takeover of the Church in Rome, the US, and Western Europe?
Fr. Michael,
There are still the Eastern Catholic Churches, which are just as Catholic as the Western (Latin) Church, as well as Western European Catholic Churches. The Eastern Catholic Church’s sacraments are just as valid as those of the Roman (Latin) Rite. They also have valid Apostolic and Episcopal succession.
While they acknowledge the primacy of the Seat of St. Peter, which is in Rome, maybe their Ecclesiastical and Sacred Traditions are just what Rome and Western Europe needs at this time?
Your thoughts on this Reply are most welcome.

While I don’t know that the hierarchies of the Eastern Catholic Churches are as corrupt as the Latin Church, I have had enough interaction with them to know that they aren’t pristine perfect. For example, this Melkite priest who once served in the Bay Area:

Speaking of the Lavender Mafia, did CCD note that the Diocese of San Jose just put out two more lists of accused priests this week?
If nothing else, this indicates that the pope thinks we are all incredibly stupid. This is like sending Dr. Josef Mengele to comfort Jewish refugees.
As a Catholic in the Atlanta metro area, Good Riddance, Wilton Gregory! The next problem: What lavender mafioso will fill his vacancy. The swamp is full of candidates.
