Dear Faithful of the Archdiocese of San Francisco,
As you likely know, we are at a critical moment right now in the history of California: voters this November will be asked whether or not they support the “right” to abortion for all nine months, without any restrictions or limitations, being written into our state constitution. It is indeed a very disturbing indication of the state of our current political climate that such a question will be asked in the form of Proposition 1 on the November 8 ballot.
Proposition 1 was passed by the state legislature and signed by the governor, and now must go to a vote of the people, requiring a simple majority for its approval. The California bishops have made defeating Prop 1 our number one priority for this year, and we ask every Catholic in the state to become educated on this dangerous bill, encourage others to oppose it, and support the “No on Prop 1 Campaign” with your prayer, fasting and financial contributions. More information about our efforts in this campaign, including engaging our spiritual resources, is available on the website of the California Catholic Conference (https://cacatholic.org/prop1) and information about efforts in the Archdiocese of San Francisco at this web page: https://sfarch.org/noonprop1/.
Updates will be sent to the parishes to publish as well.
Finally, I ask you to join in a novena for the defeat of Proposition 1 that begins September 29, the Feast of the Archangels Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael, and concludes October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Information and novena prayers can be found at https://cacatholic.org/prop1.
Sincerely yours in our Lord,
Most Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone
Archbishop of San Francisco

Those people are really asking for it….
May all the bishops of California be as enthusiastic and hardworking against enshrining mass murder into our state constitution as they are in opposing racism, climate change and unjust wages (none of which anyone I know support). It’s easy to support “causes” that are popular and supported by virtually everyone. But, that is not what Jesus did and not what His apostles and disciples are called to do. Pray for our bishops and priests to be courageous. And, may God bless Archbishop Cordileone, heart of a lion. Yet, as loving as a gentle shepherd.
The issue of Abortion should never be on a voting ballot. It should be the Law, that all American unborn children are protected from all harm. Medical care and adoption services should be available for all mothers who cannot care for their children after they are born. Our Church must firmly stand behind this. Abp. Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, went on Italian TV last Friday, and said that abortion was a “pillar of Italian society.” Shame on Paglia!
The Pontifical Academy for Life says that Abp. Paglia was misquoted– he was merely stating that Abortion was now entrenched in Italian law and society, and considered nearly unchangeable. But others say that Paglia should have firmly stated Church teaching on Abortion, in his recent TV interview.
When the left suggests that medical care should be available for all mothers, that adoption services should be widespread, etc. we get a lecture about how that is not governments business, that people have a responsibility to take care of themselves. Maybe you can be a bridge to the right, so that together we can save lives.
The government has a responsibility to protect all unborn American children. There is no such thing as a “right” to kill a child, there is a huge responsibility to protect an unborn child in the mother’s womb. Abortion is part of the selfish, “Throwaway” modern, Godless Culture of Death– and it’s wrong.
We need to see a similar letter from every California bishop. I bet we won’t.
