The following comes from a June 5 story in the Los Angeles Times.

The first time the 16-year-old student visited Roosevelt High School’s health clinic, she needed emergency contraception. This time, she wanted regular birth control.

“I don’t want to be pregnant,” she said while at the clinic. “I’m too young. I can’t take care of a baby.”

Throughout the school year, students visit the on-campus clinic to get birth control, pregnancy tests, counseling and screening for sexually transmitted diseases. The services, which are free and confidential, are offered through a unique collaboration between Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles Unified School District designed to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies among teenagers at the Boyle Heights high school.

Although nonprofit groups frequently offer reproductive healthcare on school campuses around the nation, the partnership involving Planned Parenthood — long a target of antiabortion lawmakers in Washington — is the only one of its kind….

Nurse practitioner Sherry Medrano, who runs the Roosevelt health clinic, said teenagers rarely go outside their comfort zone for family planning. By law, students can go to Medrano and her staff without the permission of their parents. “They feel much safer and much more comfortable coming to a school-based health clinic,” she said.

The 16-year-old student said she felt relieved to know that she could visit the clinic without telling her mother. “Just knowing you can come somewhere to get birth control just feels good,” she said. ‘It’s a relief.”

Once in the student was in exam room, Medrano explained how birth control worked and gave her the options: a patch, a ring, pills or a shot. The girl chose the shot, which lasts for 12 weeks. “I’m gonna forget the patch or the pill,” she said.

A few minutes later, a 15-year-old girl brought her friend to see Medrano and helped her fill out a questionnaire. The girl said she watched her older sister drop out of school after becoming a teenage mother. Now she receives birth control pills from the clinic and urges her friends to visit Medrano too.

“If I got pregnant now, I don’t know what I would do,” she said. “I still want to do good in school and have a career….”

The campus began offering contraception and counseling in 1997. But in 2006, a collaboration with a local hospital ended and the school no longer had the resources to provide free contraceptives. In 2008, Medrano said, she saw 32 positive pregnancy tests during her peak period between March 1 and June 1 — around the time of spring break and prom.

Medrano then reached out to Planned Parenthood, which now provides a medical assistant, the contraceptives and the pregnancy and STDs testing. The organization bills Family PACT, a public program that provides family planning to low-income and uninsured California residents….

Planned Parenthood’s Los Angeles executive director, Sue Dunlap, said Latino families generally want access to information and care. “We really don’t experience the traditional narrative of angry parents not wanting access to reproductive care in the schools,” she said. “It’s really the opposite….”

HOW ABOUT TEACHING THEM ABSTINENCE! ALSO WITHOUT THE PARENTS KNOWLEDGE BUT wait till bobby or Shirley do something illegal then mum and pop will be notified and be held responsible!

I’m not surprised. Even devout families can have a defiant child who will be tempted to use these evil options that are so easily available behind the parents knowledge. All it takes for them is to know someone who will influence your ignorant child. These evil programs won’t stop your children from Catching STD’s. They won’t teach girls to respect their body but they can easily give up their self respect to any boy, and by the time they reach 20 years old, they would have had at least a dozen boys they have slept with. I think the number for the boys is higher by the time they reach 20 years of age. The girls are not the only problem, the boys will learn that they don’t have to respect girls, they will look for girls who are easy and with these programs, boys and girls are easy very easy.

The title of this article tells it all. The state has NO business in education. Any single thing one can mention is done poorly and inefficiently by government. It’s evolved from education to indoctrination, to be the supervising body for parenting. How in the world did parents lose their power to make decisions – medical decisions for their minor children? When was that ceded to the state ? Take it back, don’t allow it. Shut down the public education system so that kids can actually be educated, not programmed to be submissive wards of the state.

Let’s play “russian roulette” with the children. Instead of educating them on how to “avoid” unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, possible abortions from their risky behavior and the damage to their souls–let’s arm them with the one thing that is the “cause” of all these “life changing and dangerous” consequences–contraception.

This circumstance in public schools is beyond vile. Also, Planned Parenthood is likely lying about saying that parents support their presence in public schools. In any event, parish priests, and bishops, need to publicly confront this, both in each and every homily, and directly on TV, and all media. Education and moral direction will reverse this trend; as can be said, after decades of effort, regarding abortion — now most American’s are “pro life” according to recent polls. But, will our strong bishops speak up — against out of wedlock sex (which is what this goes to), the need to marry, the need for only one man and one woman to marry each other, the absence of moral regularity to any homosexual sexual act, all of that stuff. In fact, it is unlikely that bishops, and many priests will do this. Why? Well, first of all, many of them do not believe the Church’s position on one or more of these issues (certainly the leadership of the LCWR do not). Also, many of them agree with the need to support homosexual and modern sexual activities. You cannot make a donkey into a horse. Finally, many, many of existing older clergy and bishops actively insist on their views of achieving “Vatican II” implementation and promises, which would make the Catholic Church not the Catholic Church. This kind of linkage with public schools, the family, and morality, is the direct work of Satan (“Oh please, please — the devil — hahaha”). Unless those whose position it is to fight Lucifer do so, this kind of thing will only grow. When the bells call for battle, very few clergy will show up (not at all pastoral and too judgmental to do so, ya’ know).

It boggles my mind that you need to submit a permission slip to the school for your kids to take Tylenol or even a cough drop but don’t need parents permission to administer hormone changing drugs to your child. It’s a shame.

I am a practicing, pro-life Roman Catholic who also happens to teach life science in a public high school in Northern California. The overwhelming majority of public high schools in California DO NOT have a school based health clinic on campus. The title of this article is misleading.

By the same logic, maybe they should provide cigarettes for children who need to smoke, marijuana and cocaine for the children who need drugs, and pistols for children who need to fight on the playground.

I was home schooled since 1st grade. Then I became a teenager. I got to shadow my cousin at their high school. I chose to stay homeschooled just because people were saying “Oh my God” too freely. Over these recent years I have realized I visited on a good day. The Public School system leaves much to be desired, and the quality of our youth even more so. I feel I should be surprised and flabbergasted. And I am, over the fact that I am NOT regarding this issue. There are plenty of arguments, plenty of fingers to point, plenty of arguments to make. All of which should be made by far more learned and holier people than I. All I can say regarding this issue is that I sincerely hope all those in High School realize how easy it could be to prevent this just by saying “I’m going to wait.” And I pray for all those who have had relations and then decided to take the pill/patch/ring/shot, because they have received a burden I would wish one no one. Perhaps one day after our society has fallen so far down and we are all picking up the pieces of our shattered idea of “politically-correct” morality, our government will sit down and think “Boy, didn’t see that coming.” after the deluge of ‘come-upance’ has poured down upon us for this stupid attempt to grab more money and power at the expense of human lives. God Bless the Teenage Dads who are too scared to be real men and commit to the result of their actions. God bless the Teenage Moms who feel abortion and contraception are what they have to do in order to maintain a ‘good’ life. God Bless those parents who neglect to educate their children on proper Christian beliefs and fail to project support in their child’s time of need. God bless all those who work with/for Planned Parenthood that they may realize how destructive their actions actually are. And, although we certainly don’t deserve it, God Bless America. And, probably most importantly, God bless you the reader for educating yourself and reading this article.

Jesus sat with sinners. Jesus is the Divine Healer. Start fasting and praying for the conversion of Sherry Medrano NP, Roosevelt HS principal, teachers, staff, parents and students and school board. Ask for the pro- life to be also asked to partner with the school and have a representative with the backing of printed materials, DVD’s, CD’s, listings of Pro- family life educators and doctors to refer too. Family life education to be offered to both students and parents in the evenings or other times. Ask for equal opportunity to share and teach the side of Good Health to teenage girls and young men. Step up with the Armour Of God and move into the battle with Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph in the Holy Spirit. Have a team of parents making Daily Holy Hours and rosary chains. You will defeat Satan. Go for the jugglar in holiness and prayer. Be witnesses of God’s Mercy and Love. Don’t sit on the sidelines and complain what they ( Health clinic and Planned Parenthood) are doing to the teenagers, look at what you are not doing to defend their lives and the lives of their unborn.

They want to reduce teen pregnancy so they give the false hope of birth control that is not 100% and virtually non-effective in preventing disease. This is sad when they can promote abstinence as the #1 means of birth control. The actions of PP only make matters worse as teens are really not psychologically ready for sex and this is another means of destroying the family because instead of sexual education coming from the parents, it comes from strangers who don’t have the child’s best interest in mind. We have a lot of work to do. God Love You.

To CA333, exactly… it is so hypocritical. And it seems like the parents are too busy ‘running around’ instead of instilling good values into the heads of their kids (if the parents even have good values.)

Immigrant Latino parents don’t complain about a bad policy and this is supposed to mean they accept it? What a joke! Anyone who has taught in these communities know that culturally these parents rarely question school policies and generally do not know their rights. Latino teenagers just like those of any other culture of can learn to empower and self-respect themselves by remaining abstinent before the time they are ready to take the responsibility of their actions. Stop setting low expectations for our children-they are not animals. And yes, taking all responsibilty out of sex without the reprecussions of consequences encourages selfish sexual behavior and destroys the fabric of relationships between men and women. Look at what the sexual revolution has done to our relationships and families? Rampant divorce, superficial relationships based on use, eternal adolescence where men use women and refuse to commit well into their forties, increased infertility of women, rise of pornography, human trafficking, etc.? Wake up, America??? And wake up, young Latino men and women-you are created in the image and likeness of your creator-respect yourself and eachother-true love waits, return to the values of your Christian heritage. Do not accept the lies of planned parenthood-which was started by a racist woman- Margaret Sanger-who believed in ethnic cleansing and would very pleased to see the Latino population wiped out.

Why is this surprising? Obamacare expressly authorizes such “community health centers.” This is the future, unless the people wake up and vote the bums out.

Well, of course the silver lining … uh, make that the gold lining … with school girls on contraception is that they’ll learn that self restraint is old fashioned and that they won’t be dragged down with an “impediment” as they climb the ladder into politics to where they will rule over those who in contrast developed moral fiber.

CA333, 6:10am: It’s also a shame that California bishops, priests, and bureaucrats have not supported parental notification ballot initiatives in the past few years. How many thousands of young girls will continue to be the victims of Planned Parenthood because the California Church doesn’t really want to support parents’ rights, doesn’t really want to protect young girls, and doesn’t really want to fight abortion???

An important point to consider here is that Roosevelt High School is in Boyle Heights, a large population center of LA that is 94% Latino. It is understandable why PP would want to “reduce pregnancies” (meaning contraception and abortion) there because Latinos are one of the two major ethnic groups that PP wants to decimate, the other being Black. It is interesting also that Latina icon Dolores Huerta works closely with Planned Parenthood via the “Dolores Huerta Foundation” and her daughter Camila Chavez (niece of Cesar), to “empower” high school-aged women (sic) with “the reproductive education and rights advocacy Planned Parenthood stands for”. So here we see that militant Latino organizations are in effect helping to destroy the morals of young Mexican and Central American teens and killing off their pre-born babies. Presumably most of the families in Boyle Heights are Catholic. Are the churches in the area fighting back with the truths of the Catholic Church, or are they caving in to the immorality of Planned Parenthood? Can anyone answer this? Bishops, priests. laity – any answers?

Posted Thursday, June 07, 2012 9:44 AM By Sarah
Planned Parenthood should not be in any public school. Roosevelt High School is located in Boyle Hieghts, a Hispanic, heavily Catholic, area of Los Angeles. Are the Catholic parishes doing anything to counter the influence of the schools and Planned Parenthood? Do the parishes have active youth groups to lure teens to enjoyable, moral, chaperoned activites? If the churches were pro-active it could prevent at least some teens from indulging in premarital sex. Homilies should stress premarital abstinence. I can’t recall ever hearing abstinence promoted from the pulpit. The media is the catechism that most children and teens hear day after day – loud and clear. Have you ever watched MTV? What are we doing to counter that?

PP seems to secret itself into the schools, like a phantom.

Posted Thursday, June 07, 2012 10:37 AM By Phillips
I am tired of “Catholics” denigrating public schools. If parents and pastors do their job, public schools can be excellent places to get an education. Worried that kids will be “corrupted”? Then you don’t have much faith in the formation they are receiving at home or in church. Better yet become activists and help to improve public schools rather than hide as home-schoolers.

What if the situation were this: “Manager Sherry Medrano, who runs the Roosevelt Liquor & Smoke Shop, said teenagers rarely go outside their comfort zone for alcohol or cigarettes. By law, students can go to Medrano and her staff without the permission of their parents. “They feel much safer and much more comfortable coming to a school-based bar,” she said.”

“If I got pregnant now, I don’t know what I would do,” she said. “I still want to do good in school and have a career….” So, maybe, just maybe, if you are not in a position to get pregnant and mother a child, you should not get yourself in a position where that possibility would occur. In other words, say no to sex and wait for a wedding ring. How about it?

They have witchcraft / occult / zodiac in the novelas, music is about as sexy as MTV, movies Hollywood mantra, all sex action and violence. 0) Lots of people are easily duped for twisted truths. Devil isn’t called Master of Lies for nothing. And he’s an angel (fallen angel) of a higher order than humans. If people think they can tango with him w.out God on their side they fall. Only with God / Jesus can someone win. 1) Career AKA usefulness to the state precedes family and mother bearing. 2) in cultures past ppl thought something wrong if woman couldn’t have a kid / or didn’t want a kid, flash forward to today, something wrong if a woman has a kid 3) family should be first, alot of those teens see having a baby as an impediment, but the opposite is true 4) US education mainly bites because memorization and regurgitation are taught and independent thinking is mainly rebel or do your own thing vs analysis & true philisophical logic and seeking the answer . . . and they accept every religion except Christianity. Muslim kids can get a hall pass to go out for 5x prayer. Christian kids get sent principals office for violations if they say one nation under God. True story bro.

Amy, there is a lady in Modesto, Marian Banducci, who for ages has been going to high schools after school and providing handout material on abortion. Her organization of one, with occasional volunteer helpers, is known as Voice for the Unborn. On a daily basis she is harrassed by students, teachers, school administrators, private security, and police. Nothing stops her from trying to reach out to students who most often have no truthful information on what abortion is or how sex can lead to their destruction at their stage in life. As I understand it, Marian is in her 70s or 80s. Maybe say a little prayer for her and her heroic efforts.

I didn’t win, instead it seemed like we were blackballed. I think that your comments display ignorance of the reality of how things really are. There are many excellent parents raising their kids well but kids are still kids and not all of them embrace what they have been taught, they are impressionable young minds, the influences are much to powerful in today’s times. I don’t think people realize how much pressures our youth have today. This is a society that has gone backwards, it is losing it’s common decency and common good, they lack fear of the Lord. Phillips, in response to your June 7, 10:37 AM post; Do you have any idea why we have a Catholic school system here in America? The bishops in the early and mid 1800’s recognized that the public schools, which at the time allowed the teaching of Protestant Christianity, were making bold inroads at converting Catholic children away from their Catholic faith. The public schools were teaching lies about Catholicism. Those brave Bishops, who were serving mostly poor Catholic immigrants knew that no cost was too great to save the souls of these young impressionable children. (We even have two American saints who are recognized for their efforts in Catholic education, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. John N. Neumann.) I can’t even imagine what these Bishops would have to say about the danger of todays public school education on our children? I equally wonder what they would have to say about the state of our Catholic school education of today. I’ll bet that they would be the first to stand up and promote homeschooling while insisting on returning our Catholic schools to their true mission. Today far to many Catholic school administrators are more concerned with seeing that their students are accepted into atheistic Ivy league colleges while at best giving only lip service in their concern for their students eternal souls.

Only reason I can see for these private Catholic schools is so the kids can schmooz with Catholic kids … and become great Catholic leaders such as Pelosi, Biden, and the rest of the pro-abortion, pro-sodomy, pro-Satan Catholics.

max, there use to be a time when the majority of mothers were married to their children’s fathers as well as stayed home and called themselves “housewives”. The reason that it wasn’t necessary for mothers to work was that the tax burden on the family was much less than it is today. Now working families are paying for grants to fund numerous ridiculous studies. They are paying to fund organizations like Planned Parenthood. They are paying for unwed mothers whose children have dead beat dads. In some cases they are paying welfare for intact families whose mothers lie to the government about having a working man around, so that they can have a higher standard of living. We also have had inflation imposed on us as a result of our government printing money with nothing to back it up as well as allow foreigners to come in and over inflate the housing market. So max, my proposal to you is that we need to: work on kicking out our tax and spend politicians, work towards rebuilding marriage and family life, and work towards an America where the Ten Commandments are once again honored and obeyed. Otherwise, we will fail at reforming our Catholic or public schools. I will also propose to you that it is our homeschooling families who are working toward all of the above reforms I have laid out above. (P.S. if need be, many homeschooling families have made the sacrifice of moving to States and communities were taxes and inflation are less so that they can homeschool their children. Their children’s souls are more important than their own comforts.)

yes max that is true. Plus not all parents have the temperament to home school. I am one who is for homeschooling but I also know that some parents just can’t do it lovingly. So also support for homeschooling families is a huge plus, they need more resources and support!
