Father Junipero Serra: A convenient target?
Just because you’re holy doesn’t mean you’re popular
The following comes from an April 14 U-T San Diego article by Chris Nichols:
The California Senate approved a proposal to place a statue of the late astronaut Sally Ride inside the U.S. Capitol on Monday, building momentum for a plan that would lead to the eventual removal of a statue of Rev. Junipero Serra.
State senators voted 22 to 10 to approve the exchange, which also needs sign-offs from the Assembly and Gov. Jerry Brown.
In speeches on the Senate floor, Republican and Democratic lawmakers said they struggled with the prospect of removing Serra’s statue from the National Statuary Hall, home to prominent Americans from each state, given Serra’s instrumental role in establishing early California. In the end, the proposal received just one more vote than needed, with many Republicans voting “no.”
How many of the democrats who voted for booting Serra were Catholic? they were just courting the gay vote…
Where is the voice of the million Catholics who live in California? Where is the voice of the bishops? If it were not for Fra Junipero Serra, California might have been part of Russia. Once again, Catholics have sat on their seats and let the devil win the day.
Father,, the Devil has already won, sadly…we are need a great chastisement.
Not much different than taking Andrew Jackson off the $20 bill. If we can diminish both in stature and memory enough of the past, the modern narrative can control.
Andrew Jackson was hardly a great guy.
Along with his corrupt “kitchen cabinet”, Jackson was the president for the “Trail of Tears”. He was a thoroughly despicable President, one of the worst in our history.
The “Trail of Tears” myth is just that, a myth, the result of the last 50 years or so of one-way revisionist history. I could give heap-um details, but one suffices: On the move west, the Cherokee brought their black slaves with them and purchased some more along the way.
After the Civil War, the US forced the Cherokee to abolish slavery and include the freedmen as citizens of the tribe. 150 years later the tribe is trying to reject these freedmen on grounds of sovereignty and blood qualifications.
There was a Trail of Tears alright. It sounds like this: “WAAAAH !!!” (and smells like this: $$$$$$$ !!!)
I know this thread is 2yrs old. I am not Catholic. I got here from a totally different search and I saw your post…at first I was taken aback (insulted truly), but I decided to research what you said before I started popping off at you. Glad I did, you are correct. I had no idea and it’s all very easily verifiable. I knew Cherokee enjoyed the new culture and intermarried with Europeans (Scots and Irish fundamentally) so early (1600s) that most people claiming to be Cherokee are mostly just of Western European ancestry. I didn’t realize how the European men were given a financial advantage by marring these women and being able to freely do business within the tribe. When they became wealthy they did just as the Americans and bought and…

Parents with gay children I suspect……misplaced compassion
They should have framed the argument for keeping Fr. Serra by touting him as a chaste man as in LGBTC
“Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10
The people of God are receiving warnings about how their interests are no longer upon as worthy in this Culture. Wake up, O children of God, wake up because the persecution is at hand.
Next we’ll be renaming cities and counties, streets, parks and landmarks to take away any whiff of religious significance.
I hope the end comes before we have to give secular names to our churches so as not to offend.
I admire Fr. (soon to be Saint) Junipero Serra, but I hate to see this good woman bashed in CCD comments just because she was a lesbian.
C&H she is being touted because she is a lesbian….nothing else
Only in your mind, Canisius, she was, after all, the first woman in space.
I actually think that if this issue came up 2 or 3 years ago, there would be no controversy. If he hadn’t been ignited for sainthood, it would not be a controversy. But the combination of the timing and the sainthood makes this a difficult decision.
Smaller states have fewer issues like this one. That we have so many people to honor makes it difficult. Which is why larger states should have more senators. :D Just kidding my friends….
Just to point out one small thing: Sally Ride wasn’t the first woman in space. She was the first American woman in space. The first woman in space was a Russian, Valentina Tereshkova in 1963.
Given the Soviet penchant for propaganda, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tereshkova never left the ground.
But in deference to Miss Ride, assuming Party member Valentina did actually rise to the occasion, Sally would still be the first woman to boldly go where no woman has gone before–with all of her own teeth.
She was not the first woman in space.
And there is a difference between having a statute of her (heck we have one of Pete Wilson) and replacing Fr. Serra with her (and it would have been controversial 2-3 years ago… the whole thing with the Missions, and how they are run by state – church cooperation, the statutes of Serra in various cities, the symbols of the Immaculate Conception in the flag of Santa Barbara have been cantankerous issues for years)
Anyhow, Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space
Thanks for the correction Guy and JoshuaS. You are indeed correct, Sally Ride was the first AMERICAN woman in space. Hats off to you for picking up on that!
How about obtaining a court injunction to leave the statue of Fr. Junipero Serra just where he is, and then collecting enough signatures to put this on the ballot so that all Californian’s will have an opportunity to vote on this. Would it work? We need a good lawyer and some money for gathering signatures.
An injunction because why? You don’t like the decision? No judge would issue such an injunction unless you can make a showing that removing the statue would be illegal.
Of course YFC favor removing the statue of a would be saint and replacing it with a fellow traveler
Ya know, I’ve been to statuary hall a couple of times. The whole place is a little creepy to me, so I actually don’t care one way or another.
yfc, if you actually don’t care, then why the comments?
I do care. Fr. Serra left an indelible mark on the founding of California. Miss Ride is simply one of many talented Californians who have accomplished something unique. Replacing the statue of Junipero Serra would be like replacing the statue with George Washington with the first man who walked on the moon.
Tracy, thank you for making a really great case for your position! I am tending to agree with you.
GW would probably prefer that.
Fr. Serra is probably fine with Sally Ride taking his place.
These are HQ people. They don’t want that kind of stuff.
Bishop McElroy on this:
https://www.ewtnnews.com/catholic-news/US.php?id=11975
Amen C&H. Some attribute political ‘divinity’ to a former governor/president. Imagine the firestorm if someone suggested his statue be rotated out. How about honoring the other President from California?
The unfortunate point is that each state gets two statues. So, in my opinion, California’s only option is to set up some sort of rotating program to honor the many people worthy of recognition.
Why is it necessary to remove a statue of Fr. Junipero Serra in order to honor the achievement of astronaut Sally Ride? Sounds like old-fashioned Catholic bashing to me.
“. . . Republican and Democratic lawmakers said they struggled with the prospect of removing Serra’s statue from the National Statuary Hall . . . ,” then, no doubt, they recovered from the stress of what must have been an agonizing experience, with drinks and a round of golf. Doctor’s orders.
If California Catholics really want to make a statement, they could instead, remove Junipero’s statue themselves from the federal pig sty, make a point of shaking the biblical dust from their Birkenstocks, and bring him on home.
I know just the spot for it too: Right where the presumptuous statue of Oscar Romero ought not to be.
Catholic bashing is not old fashioned; it is very much in vogue and is the most famous trend, which never goes out of style.
The Ride scam furthers the Gaystapo’s “perverted science”, and promoting such Evil is behind replacing Fr. Serra with her icon.
‘Gay Marriage’ Rooted in Fraud, Child Rape
https://townhall.com/columnists/mattbarber/2015/04/19/gay-marriage-rooted-in-fraud-child-rape-n1987102?
The very notion of “gay marriage” is an artificial construct. It’s the aberrant byproduct of the sexual revolution, which, itself, was largely instigated by bug doctor turned “sexologist,” Alfred Kinsey.
– Kinsey was a promiscuous homosexual and sadomasochist…
While his “research” has been universally discredited and exposed as fraudulent, ideologically motivated and even criminal, it remains, nonetheless, the primary source behind today’s “sexual orientation science.”
For this reason, and many others, the novel notion of “gay marriage” sits atop a house of cards.
On April 28, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments…during his tenure at Indiana University, Kinsey facilitated, with stopwatches and ledgers, the systematic sexual abuse of hundreds, if not thousands, of children and infants – all in the name of science
Kinsey asserted that children are “sexual from birth.” He further concluded, based upon experiments he directed and documented in his infamous Table 34, that adult-child sex is harmless, even beneficial, and described child “orgasm” as “culminating in extreme trembling, collapse, loss of color, and sometimes fainting. …”
Many children suffered “excruciating pain,” he observed, “and [would] scream if movement [was] continued.” Some “[would] fight away from the [adult] partner and may make violent attempts to avoid climax, although they derive[d] definite pleasure from the situation.”
It’s little wonder that Dr. Reisman identifies Kinsey as a “sexual psychopath.”
Jon J, What are you using as a gauge to measure up Andrew Jackson as one of our worst presidents? Obviously not the current incumbent who is by far, and with no competition anywhere close, the worst of the worst!
I wonder if Dr. Ride had informed NASA of her misbehavior before her shuttle flights. If she had back in those 1980’s with the world and our nation having a higher moral standard, I wonder if she would have even set foot on NASA turf?
Our polluteitiouns in the CA senate and house are a disgrace, many of whom are immoral, incompetent, and don’t deserve to be in those positions of power, but they have corrupted our state legislature, executive branch, and judges. The only way our state government can be reformed, that is pleasing to God is through His intervention via our prayers. It is truly appalling that these polluteititions would take a holy man whose mark on California history and society doesn’t even come close to being compared with anyone else, yet the polluteitions in Sacramento will place a popular homosexual living a sinful lifestyle as the trend goes, and who has accomplished what for our society?? Such that the polluteitions in Sacramento have placed this degenerate homosexual above the good Father. Truly amazing. I am sure God is not smiling upon the filthy polluteitions.
