The following comes from an August 1 story on the DailyCaller.com.
The California college professor who helped America by teaching a course called “Navigating Pornography” now says he won’t teach it anymore due to the hostile response it created.
Porn prof Hugo Schwyzer took to local media to trumpet the news, reports UPI.
Previously, Schwyzer had ended up an emotional wreck in need of therapy due to public outrage and pressure from his employer, Pasadena City College (PCC), to drop the course.
Schwyzer’s notorious course was supposed to explore sex and porn in a “safe space.” He was last seen in the news in February when he invited porn star James Deen to lecture at the community college northeast of Los Angeles. School officials decided to close the public lecture to the public.
“We support the instructor’s academic freedom within the classroom,” PCC administrator Robert Bell, had said amid the Deen controversy. “The college’s concern is to schedule all public events according to procedures so we can insure public safety and security.”
The professor of gender studies and history said he had been on the receiving end of some irate phone calls and emails since the brouhaha over Deen’s lecture.
“I’m exhausted by threats and controversy,” Schwyzer wrote in an email to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. “I need a break.”
The school hasn’t commented about Schwyzer’s decision to stop teaching the course.
Deen – boringly named Bryan Matthew Sevilla by his parents – is starring alongside Lindsay Lohan in a currently-released non-porn movie called The Canyons. He took courses at the college (and was also a barista at a local Starbucks)….
In December, the community college professor blamed mass shootings such as Sandy Hook on “frustrated white male privilege.”
He told National Review Online that mass murders in the U.S. are increasingly committed by white males suffering from “cognitive dissonance,” in a country that is trending toward multiculturalism. White males feel “powerless compared to everyone else around them,” he said.

I teach at that college and can only breathe a great sigh of relief. Political Correctness/ threats of lawsuits rule as much there as anywhere. The course had to be approved by the Curriculum Committee before it was offered to the students; that this course was approved tells you much about the mindsets on the Curriculum Committee, which is made up of representatives of every department on campus. Academic Freedom in the hands of moral cowards/ degenerates leaves the students at the mercy of professors like Schwyzer. The therapy he needs is a conversion to the Christian faith.
Decades ago, the late Fr. John Taggert would send his novices across the street from St Phillips to take classes at PCC.
Dan,
If THEY see this, do you think you will still be teaching there?
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Dan,
Why not advocate his conversion to the One, True, Catholic, and Apostolic Faith?
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Can anyone explain what this has to do with anything Catholic?
Thank you California Catholic Daily. This truly points out the diabolical disorientation that Sister Lucia of Fatima spoke about. Ted Bundy let the world know the evil results that come from the viewing of pornography. Ask the families of those murdered women “how safe a space” their loved ones were placed. This article helps Catholic parents to prepare their children to avoid certain courses and certain mentally ill professors.
Then Francis selfishly asked…”Can anyone explain what this has to do with anything Catholic?”
Catherine, your post leaves me even more puzzled. I asked what the matter of a college class on pornography at a non-Catholic, non-Public not particularly significant little secular liberal arts college has to do with anything Catholic, and you answer as if only Catholic parents would be concerned about what colleges expose their kids to. Nobody needs this web page or the Church or a class at Pomona to tell them that a porn habit or an alcohol habit or a shopping-spree habit is eventually going to cause you pain; even atheists know that!
If you know of a reference in which Sister Lucia said something about pornography (not just that licentious behavior would bring down Christendom) , that would be a valuable contribution. Is there such a reference?
Ted Bundy was a murderer who blamed his evil on something other than himself. Why would anybody believe a man who showed no ability to take responsibility for his behavior, and what does he have to do with anything Catholic? Even if his porn habit were the only reason he committed his crimes (obviously his jury thought otherwise), that still would not make it a Catholic issue.
Great Commission: Go ye therefore unto all the world and let ’em have it.
Our Lady of Fatima said, “More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason.” That IS Catholic. This IS Ca. and the problem is universal.
“Ted Bundy, an infamous serial killer, granted an interview to psychologist James Dobson just before he was executed on January 24, 1989. In that interview, he described the agony of his addiction to pornography. Bundy goes back to his roots, explaining the development of his compulsive behavior. He reveals his addiction to hard-core pornography and how it fueled the terrible crimes he committed.”
Ted: “Basically, I was a normal person. Ted: I wasn’t some guy hanging out in bars, or a bum. I wasn’t a pervert in the sense that people look at somebody and say, “I know there’s something wrong with him.” I was a normal person. I had good friends. I led a normal life, except for this one, small but very potent and destructive segment that I kept very secret and close to myself. Those of us who have been so influenced by violence in the media, particularly pornographic violence, are not some kind of inherent monsters. We are your sons and husbands. We grew up in regular families. Pornography can reach in and snatch a kid out of any house today. It snatched me out of my home 20 or 30 years ago. As diligent as my parents were, and they were diligent in protecting their children, and as good a Christian home as we had, there is no protection against the kinds of influences that are loose in a society that tolerates.”… Keep up the good work CCD!
Very good question Francis… I agree with you on this one… What in the name of Sam Hill does this have to do with Church…
Francis and Canisius, it has much to do with Catholic morals and the devastation of family values. In the 1970’s I knew a young man who was actually taking astrology ( a pseudoscience) not astronomy at one public college. I was horrified that our tax dollars were being spent on such nonsense. Some of this gender bending stuff is now actually being forced on some students. One of my daughters went to a community college for one or two years to take classes that ACTUALLY went toward her degree to avoid such nonsense, including some anti Catholic liberal multicultural classes, being forced on her. Then she went on to the university that had accepted her without wasting her time.
Canisius, whether you like it or not, you are being or will be taxed for classes like this, and believe me it will include homsexual porn in many, if not all, cases.
Anne T, the culture is already anti-Catholic, much thanks to your generation, this story has zero to do with Church directly, if this idiot was at a Catholic school I would understand….I think its way past time for the Church and us Catholics stop engaging the culture, it corrupt the core., again thanks to much of what came out of the 60’s… First the Church must heal itself and purge the rot from within. I prefer to return the Catholic “ghetto” so called. Pray away the 60’s generation…
I should have made it clear that the gender bending classes were not in the astrology classes, as far as I know, but in other classes.
Anonymous, those of us who are older know how far downhill our public highschools have gone, and I have found that many public community colleges are doing a better job of educating our youth than the bigger universities in many areas. One young man I know took an astronomy class, an actual science, at one community college, and we are in great need of good scientists, physicians and so forth. Ones who will tell us the truth about bad behavior. These are some of the vocations we should encouraging.
I disagree. It has to do with morality, which has to do with the Church. If you’re not interested in it, don’t read it. In my opinion, the editors of this blog very properly take an inclusive attitude rather than an exclusive one, and perform a valuable service thereby.
Here’s how I think my experience with obessive internet behavior relates to CCD: Twice I myself actually gave up reading CCD for Lent, and I managed to stay away for the whole 40 days plus Holy Week and Easter Sunday. But then eventually I relapsed. I thought I could just read a few articles to learn something interesting about the faith from an unfamiliar perspective, and then put it down. I say to myself “hey, just this one article about the pope who took my name!” I think I am in control, but every time I start reading, even though I know the stuff is bad for me and diverts me from the True Faith, that old compulsion takes over and I am helpless. Before I know it, I’m writing a response to somebody or other’s dumb comment.
“even though I know the stuff is bad for me and diverts me from the True Faith, that old compulsion takes over and I am helpless” … poor baby, Francis.
I think I have the same compulsion. It’s not healthy.
Yes, Francis; why do you ask?
Sure. The professor will likely end up at a Catholic university.
Las Vegas bookies are giving it high odds also that it’ll be called the Liberace Chair of Studies.
Is Schwyzer Catholic? His course topic isn’t. If he isn’t Catholic, why would he wind up at a Catholic university rather than some other small nonsectarian college? God knows there are plenty of them.
It is more likely that Nancy Pelosi or Paul Ryan would end up at a Catholic university, teaching their respective dissident perspectives as if their ideas were Catholic. That would be a legitimately “Catholic” story. But with this story, it’s about the icky sexuality and not anything Catholic.
Juergensen,
“Sure. The professor will likely end up at a Catholic university.” He will probably be made the Head of the Theology Dept. just like some sodomites we know of are now head of some Theology Departments at formerly Catholic Universities such as UCSD!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher
Yes, you are not doing your evangelical work hard enough mr. errr Francis
White males feel powerless compared to everyone else around them? Who does not feel powerless in this world? How much power does one individual have anyway, regardless of color of skin, gender, or who else is around them? Most of us struggle every day to maintain the upper hand with ourselves, let alone with the world around us.
Power is best expressed in combination with others of like mind, through harnessing the powerful forces of nature to the best of our ability, and best of all, through acknowledging our own very limited power as a single human being and praying to the Lord to send us the strength to do the best things possible every day of our lives.
Great post, Maryanne, and in this time of short funding for schools and colleges and of excessive taxation, the educational system should be used to teach jobs skills actually needed to get a decent vocation, not waste our hard- earned tax dollars on this kind of garbage.
“White males feel powerless compared to everyone else around them?” Which, Maryanne, is why white males all have dozens of guns and garages full of ammo.
Poor man! Being denied his livelihood! I am sure Santa Clara University (or USF) will snap up the opportunity to give him a professorship and tenure. These are hard times!
Not to worry, he can go back and restart his business on the streets, and work his way up to elected politician instead of professor … or would that be pornfessor?
Although, I do not always agree with the way you post, Skai, I love your term “pornfessor”. It does hit the nail right on the head. We do have to laugh sometimes or we would be grumpy or crying all the time. Thanks for the humor. You made my day. Now I have to get off of here and actually do some work.
I’m glad that he abandoned the course but has he abandoned the great evil that porn produces within him? I highly doubt that. It’s so stupid that they even had such a course, it’s disgusting and inappropriate but then again hasn’t it been for many years now that our education has gone garbage in many parts of the world?
A course helping understand why it’s damaging to even start an addictive path to porn would be best….
I wonder where this professor learned this and why did he want to even teach it? It’s disgusting. I just can’t figure out, why would any intelligent human being would want to hold such a class? Can’t figure and don’t want to.
The guy could start teaching classes on sexually transmitted diseases.
LOL good one Ski Ven : )
